We'd love to hear from you! Please send us a Text Message! From the New York Times: Quote: “Much Ado About Nothing is a feast! Joseph Papp's 1972 CBS television production of the New York Shakespeare Festival's staging of Shakespeare's rollicking comedy is brassy, bouncy, and all–together entertaining. Featuring Sam Waterston, Douglas Watson and the Tony Award performances of Kathleen Widdoes and Barnard Hughes, Papp's turn of the century version was critically acclaimed and enormously popular with audiences. Much Ado About Nothing originated at the open-air Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It was such a hit in the park that producer, Joseph Papp,  that fall, transferred the entire show to Broadway and there it became the longest running Shakespeare production in Broadway history. In 1972, 20 million people saw the broadcast of this CBS – TV IBM sponsored production of Shakespeare's classic tale of romance, mistaken identity, and the battle of the sexes. Probably more people saw it on that one night than had seen it previously in history.Presented by Watchfire Music https://watchfiremusic.com/ To access all of the episodes in our podcast, please subscribe to Watchfire Music's Theater Of The Imagination Subscription Series. While many visitors flock to Central Park, only a handful truly delve into the rich past and hidden gems of the 840-acre park! Whether you have half an hour or an entire day to spare, the park's sheer expanse offers something for everyone. But how do you learn about these landmarks as you explore?! Enter the Central Park Audio Guides which provide interesting audio readings of 40+ places in Central Park. In this episode, we'll dive into how to use the free audio guides, where to find them, and even give you a preview of what the audio guides sound like. While you can certainly book guided tours of Central Park, those cost money & require you to be there at a certain time and for a certain amount of time. If you're more of a DIY explorer and like to go at your own pace, the Central Park Audio Guides are for you! These guides offer historical information, fun facts, and little-known tidbits of info about 40+ landmarks. Each audio guide is available in English, Spanish, French, and ASL. For most locations, the audio snippets range anywhere from 90 seconds up to about 4 1/2 minutes. Here are the 2 ways you can use the Central Park Audio Guides. ⏬ Option 1: Phone Call Call the phone number listed on the sign near the location Enter the “extension number” listed on the sign Listen to the audio (preferably with headphones) If you want to save it in your contacts, here's the Central Park Audio Guide phone number: 646-862-0997 The main disadvantage of the phone call route is that you have to find the extension on the sign in the park. Option 2: Bloomberg Connects App Option 2 is to download the Bloomberg Connects app and find the Central Park Audio Guide there. The advantage of the app is that you can search for locations/landmarks without being right next to them. That makes it easy to learn about sections of the park before (or after) you check them out. This week's storytellers are Broadway Actor/Singer Kimberly JaJuan, Magician, Ballonist, and Sideshow Performer Zia Quill Kay, Magician and Podcast Host Kayla Drescher, and Celtic Magician Daniel Greenwolf. All the stories in this episode have to do with nightmares unfolding at and during performances. Kimberly talks about missing an entrance cue, Zia tells about a gig that was raided by SWAT, Kayla talks about exiting an illusion too early, and Daniel talks about a fireworks stunt gone wrong.   Kimberly JaJuan The first story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in RAGTIME on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in MARIE CHRISTINE. Most recently she could have been seen bringing HERCULES to life with the Public Works at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. She's a long time member and manager of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a diverse, professional choir of broadway artists, united to change lives through the power of music and service. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain't Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. Here she is talking about the time she missed her entrance cue during a live performance.    Zia Quill Kay The second story is by Zia Quill Kay, a balloon artist, magician, clown, and sideshow performer. It't not like he had a choice though, with parents who are also in the performance industry as well. Here he is telling about his very first close up magic gig that got raided by SWAT.    Kayla Drescher The third story is my magician and podcast host Kayle Drescher, that creates magic that you care about and can really connect with on a human level. Her magic has taken her all over the world for clients like Microsoft, IBM, and Wells Fargo, among others. She also tours the world with the traveling show, Champions of Magic alongside other fellow magi and is planning to hit the road again in October! You may have seen her on TV shows like Access Hollywood, NBC's Today Show, where she was crowned “The Next Great Magician” by David Copperfield, or on Penn & Teller's Fool Us where Teller literally fell in love with her magic. She's also the host of the SHEzam Podcast, a show that hopes to make itself obsolete, as it brings change in the magic community and other neighboring industries. The goal being to inspire these industries to be more inclusive to all...and it's working! Here she talking about the time she left the box early in a grand illusion performance during Champions of Magic. Here's where you can find out more about Kayla:  Kayla's Website: http://magicinheels.com/  Champions of Magic Website: http://championsofmagic.co.uk/  SHEzam Podcast: http://shezampod.com/    Daniel Greenwolf The final story is told by Daniel Greenwolf, an Award-Winning Magician, Writer, Creator, & Slightly Mad Irishman. This week's storytellers are broadway actor and singer Kimberly JaJuan, broadway actor E Clayton Cornelious, magician Ran'D Shine, and broadway actor Stanley Wayne Mathis. This week, in observance of Juneteenth coming up this Saturday, I'm featuring stories all from Black entertainers. If you're unaware of what Juneteenth is, having only glanced past it as a seemingly obscure holiday on your calender, Juneteenth, observed on June 19th is a day in which we celebrate the day that the slaves in Texas found out that the Emancipation Proclimation was happening. In short, it declared that "all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free." Although that happened in 1863, 158 years ago, Black people today unfortunately are still facing challenges of equality. It may or may not come as a surprise that these challenges also crop up for those in the entertainment industry as well. It's my goal this episode to shine light on some of these challenges to bring awareness and inspire change because this is something that needs to be addressed, not just by those experiencing it, but by all people. Here she is talking about a time she had to be judicious with her words in regards to cultural differences having been asked for her thoughts on a scene being rehearsed.   E Clayton Cornelious The second story is by E Clayton Cornelious, a 22 year broadway veteran with credits including The Caterpillar in Wonderland, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Scottsboro Boys, and A Chorus Line. Add to this, a number of National Tour credits that include Kinky Boots, Sister Act, Jersey Boys, and Dirty Dancing. In addition to his countless theater credits, he's a broadway investor and producer as well as a member of the Broadway Inspirational Voices. He's also a recent recipient of the, "Legacy Robe" for his role in the Broadway hit, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. Here's E Clayton telling about a time he didn't land a role because he didn't fit the picture of what they were looking for. Here's where you can find out more about E Clayton:  E Clayton's Website:  https://www.eclaycorn.com    Ran'D Shine The third story is my magician Ran'D Shine, the face of the new millennium magician who's magic has taken him around the world from Cape Town South Africa performing his one-man show, "Mysterious Ways," to Presidential Inauguration banquets at the White House. He is one of the most sought after magicians on the college circuit, and has been featured at Hollywood's 'Magic Castle' as well as 'Monday Night Magic', New York's longest running Off-Broadway magic show. Here's Ran'D talking about a time he was mistaken for waitstaff at a networking event and then questioned as if he didn't belong there. Here's where you can find out more about Ran'D:  Ran'D's Website: https://www.randyshine.com     Stanley Wayne Mathis The final story is told by Stanley Wayne Mathis, a broadway veteran who made his debut in 1990 in the revival of Oh, Kay!. His other credits include The Book of Mormon and the original casts of Jelly's Last Jam, The Lion King and Nice Work If You Can Get It, as well as revivals of Wonderful Town, Kiss Me, Kate and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Here's Stanley telling a few stories about things he's had to deal with as a Black man in the entertainmnet industry.     Share Your Own Stories!  Do you have comments, suggestions, or want to share your own stories? In the mid-2000's she traveled with Nicholas Kristof to the Sudan border, for research on what eventually became her best-known play In Darfur. In Darfur premiered at The Public Theater, followed by a standing room only performance at their 1800-seat Delacorte Theater in Central Park, a first for a play by a woman. She was a founding member of the Obie Award-winning playwriting collective 13P and has taught widely at universities, venues like New York Theatre Workshop and the Sundance Institute, as well as refugee camps in Northern Uganda and Palestine. In 2016, her play Spare Rib was read at an event, presented by Gloria Steinem, Samantha Bee, and others, honoring Christian OBGYN and abortion provider Dr. Willie Porter, and raised $20,000 in one night for southern abortion clinics.Miller's newest play No One is Forgotten is about two women imprisoned under unknown circumstances. It was inspired by the many recent stories of journalists captured abroad and runs Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater from July 8 to July 27. In this talk, she discusses the current geopolitical climate, what we can do to keep journalists safe, and how she ran a particularly successful Kickstarter campaign to make the play possible. The Public Theater’s second free Shakespeare in the Park presentation this summer is the late romance “Cymbeline,” a twisty tale of duplicity and betrayal directed by Daniel Sullivan. The cast features Shakespeare in the Park regulars Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater as young newlyweds separated by the titular king and his conniving queen. The convoluted "Cymbeline" plot involves, among other things, a headless corpse, a beautiful heroine who fools everyone into thinking she’s a boy simply by putting on a boy’s clothes and Jupiter flying in and out of the action on an eagle’s back. The play has been in and out of fashion over the years, with many detractors over the last century or so. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has seen several productions, so he has a sense of perspective to offer as he evaluates Shakespeare in the Park’s "Cymbeline" at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

The second offering from The Public Theater’s free Shakespeare in the Park this summer is a musical adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost, the Bard's early comedy about four young men who swear off romance to devote themselves to study, only to promptly fall in love. The play has been adapted and directed by Alex Timbers, the director of Peter and the Starcatcher, among many other shows, and the songs are by Michael Friedman, the house composer of the downtown theater troupe the Civilians. Shakespeare scholars and purists will find little of the original text in this version which is set at a college reunion. You know summertime in New York has arrived when the Delacorte Theater unwraps itself for Shakespeare in the Park. The Public Theater presents two free Shakespeare works this season: The Comedy of Errors and later in the season, Love’s Labors Lost. The Comedy of Errors has been updated to the 1940s, with some musical touches, too (though not as extensive as those expected for Labors, which is billed as "a new musical"). Starring in the Comedy are actors Hamish Linklater and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, which Shakespeare fans will recognize from previous outings at the Delacorte (fans of the ABC sitcom "Modern Family" will also know Ferguson). And Shakespeare in the Park regulars may also recognize the handiwork of director Daniel Sullivan, who has become a reliable mainstay of the program in recent years with his productions of Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice and last summer’s As You Like It. The play turns on the confusion that results when Antipholus and his servant Dromio, visitors from Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, where unbeknownst to them their identical twins also live. In this production each set of twins is played by a single actor. The production runs through June 30. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood sizes up the comedy and the errors.
