Thomas Hudson alleged in custody filings that his ex-wife Shauntel took their children on the Carnival Horizon without his consent. He alleged she was responsible for their supervision and that the living arrangements were inappropriate. Shauntel testified under oath that the three teenagers chose to share a cabin — she called them “like the Three Amigos.” She also confirmed Timothy was on ADHD and insomnia medication and hadn't taken the insomnia meds for two nights on the cruise, including the night before Anna Kepner's body was found.That same woman just filed a child support petition against Thomas. She says he owes her back payments and that the court should order him to pay more going forward. Timothy has been locked up since mid-June, facing first-degree murder charges as an adult in his stepsister's death. The trial date is November 2. A plea agreement must happen by October 23 or it goes to a jury.The original support order covered three kids at $2,129 a month. One aged out. Timothy went to federal detention. The number is now $1,092 for a single child. Timothy hasn't lived under Shauntel's roof in nearly a year. Thomas had already gone to court before the cruise, accusing Shauntel of keeping the kids from him. His lawyer asked for 140 days of make-up custody exchanges — that's how many Shauntel had allegedly blocked.Anna's ex-boyfriend stated publicly that the stepbrother had climbed on top of Anna during a FaceTime call. In the first forty-eight hours after Anna Kepner's body was found aboard the Carnival Horizon, custody filings allege Timothy Hudson's mother texted his biological father that she'd told their son she loved him. Within weeks, those same filings claim she said she couldn't jeopardize her marriage to help him. The filings allege the family wanted Timothy "buried." That's how fast the fracture happened.Timothy Hudson is sixteen, charged as an adult with first-degree murder in his stepsister's death. His defense team just told a federal judge they need more time because a "very unfortunate family dynamic" is preventing them from reaching family members essential to a Miller hearing — a constitutionally required proceeding examining a juvenile's childhood before a life sentence. The judge granted the continuance. Prosecutors didn't oppose it.The defense won't say who they can't reach. The custody record says it for them. Timothy's mother is married to Anna's father Christopher Kepner. She is both the accused killer's biological mother and the stepmother of the person who was killed. Court records from the custody case show she and Christopher expelled Timothy from their home. His biological father Thomas Hudson — who appears to be cooperating with the defense — put the text exchanges into the court record. Christopher Kepner told reporters he wants Timothy in "orange jumpsuit and handcuffs."The trial is set for November 2nd. The plea deadline is October 23rd. A Miller hearing is the only thing standing between Timothy Hudson and a life sentence. The 2012 Supreme Court ruling says a judge must examine a juvenile defendant's childhood — mental health, trauma, family environment, rehabilitation potential — before imposing life without parole. To build that examination, the defense needs parents, relatives, and anyone who witnessed the defendant's development. Records tell part of the story. Only a parent can tell the rest.Timothy Hudson's three public defenders have never handled a juvenile federal case. They told Judge Beth Bloom their access to "certain family members" has been blocked by a family dynamic they called "very unfortunate." The filing was deliberately vague. Auckland Council's Tataki Auckland Unlimited has released a ten-year plan to improve cruise ship infrastructure and bring more ships to the city. Ingrid Hipkiss spoke to Karen Thompson Smith, Tataki Auckland Unlimited Head of Tourism and Cruise Industry Association board member, about the plan.

Auckland wants to put its best foot forward as a cruise destination. Auckland Unlimited and the city's port have unveiled a 10 year plan focused on strengthening areas like visitor experience, infrastructure, and the environment. This comes after the country lost around 250 port calls last season compared to the previous season, and is set to lose about 20 this summer. Auckland Unlimited Destination Director Annie Dundas told Mike Hosking cruise lines have so much choice in where they can travel, and we have to be competitive, or we'll miss out on a billion-dollar industry. In October of 1980, the luxury cruise ship Prinsendam set sail from Vancouver with more than 300 passengers aboard, many of whom were elderly. But just after midnight on the cruise's fourth day, in the Gulf of Alaska, a fire broke out in the ship's engine room. The crew battled to contain the blaze, but with limited firefighting equipment, it was unclear if they could prevent the fire from spreading, and threatening the entire ship. The population aboard numbers in the thousands. And jurisdiction — in this case international waters — places the matter in federal court, under FBI authority, with procedural rules that rarely account for defendants as young as Timothy Hudson. This look back, with retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, examines the forensic and investigative realities of the Anna Kepner case.The evidence investigators recovered from the Carnival Horizon is documented in unsealed court records: security camera footage tracking Hudson's movements during the relevant window, a cellular device that was reportedly found destroyed in a waste receptacle, and DNA testing results that the prosecution contends are directionally clear. The medical examiner ruled Anna's death a homicide by mechanical asphyxiation. Her body was found concealed beneath a bed in the stateroom she shared with Hudson.Coffindaffer assesses the evidentiary picture from a federal investigative perspective — what the surveillance establishes, what the destruction of the phone signals, and what the DNA evidence contributes.
