Auckland Council's Tataki Auckland Unlimited has released a ten-year plan to improve cruise ship infrastructure and bring more ships to the city. Ingrid Hipkiss spoke to Karen Thompson Smith, Tataki Auckland Unlimited Head of Tourism and Cruise Industry Association board member, about the plan.

Auckland wants to put its best foot forward as a cruise destination. Auckland Unlimited and the city's port have unveiled a 10 year plan focused on strengthening areas like visitor experience, infrastructure, and the environment. This comes after the country lost around 250 port calls last season compared to the previous season, and is set to lose about 20 this summer. Auckland Unlimited Destination Director Annie Dundas told Mike Hosking cruise lines have so much choice in where they can travel, and we have to be competitive, or we'll miss out on a billion-dollar industry. In October of 1980, the luxury cruise ship Prinsendam set sail from Vancouver with more than 300 passengers aboard, many of whom were elderly. But just after midnight on the cruise's fourth day, in the Gulf of Alaska, a fire broke out in the ship's engine room. The crew battled to contain the blaze, but with limited firefighting equipment, it was unclear if they could prevent the fire from spreading, and threatening the entire ship. The population aboard numbers in the thousands. And jurisdiction — in this case international waters — places the matter in federal court, under FBI authority, with procedural rules that rarely account for defendants as young as Timothy Hudson. This look back, with retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, examines the forensic and investigative realities of the Anna Kepner case.The evidence investigators recovered from the Carnival Horizon is documented in unsealed court records: security camera footage tracking Hudson's movements during the relevant window, a cellular device that was reportedly found destroyed in a waste receptacle, and DNA testing results that the prosecution contends are directionally clear. The medical examiner ruled Anna's death a homicide by mechanical asphyxiation. Her body was found concealed beneath a bed in the stateroom she shared with Hudson.Coffindaffer assesses the evidentiary picture from a federal investigative perspective — what the surveillance establishes, what the destruction of the phone signals, and what the DNA evidence contributes. Three teenagers who had not been raised together were assigned to a single cabin aboard the Carnival Horizon.The Crumbley precedent — in which both parents of the Oxford High School shooter were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for ignoring documented warning signs — has dominated public discussion. But the jurisdictional framework differs fundamentally. The Carnival Horizon is a Panamanian-flagged vessel. The alleged crime occurred in international waters, outside any state's jurisdiction. No federal contributing-to-the-delinquency-of-a-minor statute applies in this context. If no applicable law exists, the comparison to the Crumbley prosecution lacks a statutory foundation.Separately, Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres reversed his own pretrial release decision on June 10 after receiving sealed evidence filed two days earlier.
