For a long time, marriage counseling was seen as a last-ditch effort—something couples did when they were already on the brink of divorce. While that stigma has lessened, many couples still wait way too long before seeking help—statistically, an average of seven years after problems first begin. In this episode, Aaron and I get real about our own journey with marriage counseling and introduce you to someone who's been instrumental in our growth: Dr. Jonathan Cude, our longtime marriage counselor. We sit down with Dr. Cude to talk about why he got into counseling, what struggles he sees couples facing most often, and what advice he has for those looking to build a strong foundation in their relationship. We also share the heart behind Pillow Talk, our new e-course designed to help couples navigate conflict and cultivate a thriving marriage. Neither of us had a lot of healthy, long-lasting marriages to look to for guidance, so we wanted to create something that combines our personal experience with expert insight. If counseling feels out of reach or intimidating, Pillow Talk offers another way to access practical tools and wisdom to strengthen your relationship. Join us for this honest and insightful conversation about what it really takes to build a marriage that not only lasts—but is actually fulfilling 20+ years down the road. If you're building a team, you want players who are humble, hungry and people-smart. Zachary Churchill says this is not his idea—it's from Patrick Lencioni, founder of The Table Group—but Churchill seems not only to espouse it but embody it. The winner of the 2022 CUES Emerge competition, Churchill is not afraid to say he previously entered the competition in 2013 and didn't advance. So that's pretty humble.“For me, ego is the obstacle to personal progress,” says Churchill, CUDE, CMA, CFE, CCM, in the show. “I tend to think my way is good enough, so why change? But the truth is, we're not going to change unless we want something bad enough or the pain of doing things the way it is now, that status quo, hurts enough. ... I desperately wanted to do a great job in this year's competition. And that meant I had to let go of my ego ... and just do things the way that the experts advised me.”Churchill is hungry, too, interested in learning and growing—to the point where he would like to become a credit union CEO one day. He's already been sharing everything he learns about leadership with other leaders and staffers at his credit union. As for people smart? There are lots of examples of this in the show, including how Churchill showed how his business case about building an analytics team was really all about people.“A key learning that I took away from the CUES Emerge program came from one of our speakers who said, ‘Humans are wired for story,'” he says. “... as someone on the finance side of the business, I just figured that data and facts will win the day. ... But that just isn't how we're hardwired as a species. And so, if telling stories matters, then we need to find the story. ... And so, I really had to think about, ‘How could I translate this sort of abstract concept into something concrete?'“I'm like, ‘How do I bring this alive?' ... And then finally, I stumbled across the example of our member, Mrs. Rose ... the idea of her situation and how we could help her ... What is more powerful, if I said, ‘There's strong financial and member benefits to implementing my proposal,' or ‘We can transform the lives of our members through data? Let me tell you about Mrs. Rose'?”Churchill gets into lots of other great topics in this episode, including his experience with the CUES Emerge program; a sketch of his CUES Emerge business case; advice for writing a solid business case and building a winning online presentation; ideas on how to be more receptive to feedback. He also offers advice for up-and-coming credit union leaders.“I'd say step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. ... The great things in life, they just don't come easy. And you don't know how much potential you have until you test yourself and see what are you capable of. What are your limits? So, give things a shot, try and get involved.”Links for this show: CUESolutions provider Strategic Resource Management (SRM), show sponsor CUES Emerge program: finalists, pitches and moreCUES Virtual Classroom, free to members Churchill's prize is an educational package that includes registration to CUES Advanced Management Program

There’s a growing trend of credit unions hiring chief diversity officers, says Renee Sattiewhite, CUDE, CDP, president/CEO of the African American Credit Union Coalition.“It is amazing that so many credit unions are calling or asking about what should they do, what should they be looking for,” Sattiewhite says in this episode. “I’m happy to report that the credit unions that are larger are doing that. And then some of the credit unions are calling us because they don’t have a chief diversity officer (wondering), ‘What can they do in lieu of that?’”Why is this trend good news? “I think that it’s a good sign with the industry that they’re looking at having someone who is certified, who’s got the information, who’s got the intellect and the skill to help lead the organization in their DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) journey,” Sattiewhite explained.Hiring a chief diversity officer that isn’t certified is troubling, she explained. “It’s quite important to have the knowledge behind you so that you can talk about the unconscious biases, that you can talk about the DEI-specific things so you can help the organization move past that,” Sattiewhite emphasizes. “You need to really vet the people that you’re looking at for candidates, making sure that the organization is not just checking a box.“It’s not a project. It’s a journey. It is not a sprint. It is a marathon,” she adds. “And I think people need to see it that way. They think that, ‘We came up with a DEI plan, so we’re good.’ No, that does not make you good. Can you execute on that plan? Can you change that plan when it needs to be changed? Are you open to making sure that everyone is included in that plan? … DEI is not just a race issue; it’s more than just that.”What should credit unions look for in a chief diversity officer? Sattiewhite says the key lies in “making sure that that person has the right spirit—the spirit of change, a spirit of helping, a spirit of openness, preferably someone who has experience and understands the needs of a multicultural membership or a multicultural staff and employees. I think that to think that just because you have a plan that you’re done is an unrealistic expectation,” she says. “The organization didn’t get to where it is overnight. So the DEI journey, it’s going to be … unfortunately sometimes painful. You have to have a lot of grit, a lot of gumption. You have to have someone who is fearless and really wants to effect change not just in the organization but in the community that they serve.”The show also gets into:The idea that the African American Credit Union Coalition is inclusive and anyone can joinMore about AACUC’s work and educational offeringsThe connection between credit unions, the motto “people helping people” and eradicating racismHow to set your chief diversity officer up for successLinks for this show:African American Credit Union CoalitionAACUC’s Commitment to Change, Credit Unions Unite Against Racism programSattiewhite’s CUES article, Diversity Insight: Red Versus BlueDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion Cornell Certificate Program

Special Guests: Joey Batts & Meghan Jamison, CUDE, CCUFC Hip Hop for the Homeless https://www.facebook.com/HipHopfortheHomeless Connecticut high school English teacher and regionally famous rapper, Joey Batts was faced with the realization that his impression of what a homeless person looks like was off base. After learning that he had students with food insecurity and housing needs, he looked for ways to help. Batts says, “The concept began with just realizing that homelessness affects so many people - of all ages, and many times, not the typical displacement cases we see with our eyes. Coming to the realization that the holidays are a difficult time of year for anyone, more even so for folks who don’t have a home or a support team behind them, so why not try to help?” In the years since it’s inception, Hip Hop for the Homeless has raised nearly $20,000.00 which goes directly to partner community agencies across Connecticut that support people with nutrition, housing, clothing, and job training needs. COVID has complicated many things this year, we all know that. But one thing that remains clear is that the group of dedicated artists will continue to provide support to the members of their communities that need it most. Year seven of Hip Hop for the Homeless will see virtual performances for the first time, available to anyone with an internet connected device. While we’ll all miss out on the connection of sharing a physical space, more people will be able to see the show without fear of exposure to the virus and keeping our communities safe is what is most important.

Under our homes and schools a silent killer often rises from the earth. . . radon. Join me in a lively discussion today with Curtis Cude of the Oregon Health Authority to discuss radon and you. He and I have both had to take action to decrease radon in our own homes, and we discuss the landscape of radon testing, homes, schools, mitigation, and barriers to reducing radon levels. Think you're protected because your neighbor has low radon or you're in new construction? What does it mean to have radon resistant construction? Does that mean you don't need to test your home? Listen to this episode to find out about how you can protect yourself, your home, and your community. Want to take action? 1- At home- make sure your home has been tested for radon. Test yourself if you aren't sure. Order a kit from and test in winter with doors and windows closed 2- At school- find out whether your school has been tested for radon and whether the level is above 2 pCi/L (consider action) or above 4 pCi/L (action definitely advised) 3- Your community- Consider contacting your elected representative to express your concern about the high health costs of radon. Diagnosing and treating lung cancer is expensive, not to mention the devastation it can cause an individual or their family. It is likely worth supporting programs to help people test and mitigate their homes. It certainly seems a wise idea to ensure that our children are not breathing radon at school. 4- Consider donating to the American Lung Association, who provides outstanding radon education and outrearch resources. ---------------------------- Visit blog post for more information and references, or go to airhealthourhealth.org. Educators have known for a while that personalized, one-on-one education is the way forward for the classroom. But the reality is, with large classrooms and tight schedules, giving this one-on-one teaching time can be a difficult thing to perfect. Technology has been bridging that gap, and what instructors are realizing is that personalized teaching can't be seen as an added feature of the classroom; it needs to be integrated into the entire curriculum. Where do educators start? How do you utilize software to personalize instruction in the classroom and turn data into a more predictive tool for assessment? To get some clarity, we turned to a leader in this space: Dallas-based Istation, which performs predictive assessment and adaptive curriculum for students and teachers alike via an online portal. On today’s episode of the EdTech Podcast, host Daniel Litwin sat down with Istation's DeAn Jeffrey, Strategic Professional Development Specialist, and Sarah Cude, Regional Professional Development Lead for the Southwest, to explore this topic more in-depth. Local school districts and officials at the state level are encouraging their teachers to shift their mindset when it comes to using data, Jeffrey said. Istation provides precise and individualized data about students, so teachers can use that information to guide their decision making and classroom planning. Both Cude and Jeffrey came to iStation after being longtime classroom teachers and using the predictive assessment tool in their respective school districts. “Long gone are the days of solely standing in front of the classroom and lecturing to the whole class,” Cude said. “We know that one-size-fits-all does not meet the needs of our children,” Jeffrey said, agreeing with Cude's perspective. She has seen the results of predictive assessments both as an administrator and as an Istation team member. When Jeffrey was a principal in Bells, Texas, her school saw great results incorporating predictive assessment into its curriculum. “Using Istation with fidelity as one of our initiatives, we moved from being a good school with two distinctions to one of the top five performers in the state of Texas,” she said. Deciding to use the software is only half the battle, though. Listen to Jeffrey and Cude break down the importance of predictive assessment in making more time for individual teaching, why getting the school and district administration to buy in to software like Istation's is so critical to success, and what the future of the personalized classroom looks like.
Why did CUES restructure its memberships for 2019? According to Jimese Harkley, CUDE, the change was made for two key reasons: to simplify membership and to enable more credit union leaders and potential leaders to benefit from CUES membership. Learn all about it in this episode of the CUES Podcast, also available on CU Management magazine’s podcasts page.

For his “Marketing Today” podcast, Alan has interviewed people from across the country and around the world. In this episode, though, he talks with someone who works in the same building — McKinney Chief Creative Officer Jonathan Cude. Cude got his start in advertising as a secretary at an Atlanta ad agency. Then, after a stop at portfolio school, he made his way to Portland and Wieden+Kennedy before arriving at McKinney. He’s been awarded just about every industry accolade while working on clients such as Nike, Diet Coke, Audi, and Samsung. In 2015, Adweek named him one of the 50 Vital Leaders in Tech, Media and Marketing. For Cude, the two most important qualities for creatives to possess in advertising are fearlessness and resiliency. Talking about fearlessness, Cude says, “I do believe that the creative people in our industry are artists. But we don’t so much get paid for the artistry as we do the ability to withstand the critiquing and pulling apart of ‘our babies.’” As for resiliency, he goes on to add, “To me, being resilient as a creative in advertising is probably the single greatest determining factor in whether or not a person is going to be successful.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: From Washington, D.C. to Texas and the world beyond: Cude touches on the experiences that led him to a career in advertising. (1:31) Let your fingers do the walking: Cude’s “colorful” first foray into advertising. (6:02) “People care more about themselves than they care about brands.” (9:44) “Creativity…is probably the single greatest differentiator in advertising and marketing.” (12:56) Cude talks about how modern culture and the fragmentation of our media landscape affect the way he pays attention to brands. (22:57) Cude’s take on the future of marketing: A hyper-personalized world where no two people experience an ad the same way. (26:08) Support the show.
