In this insightful episode, we delve into the unique journey of Dan Ward, a Senior Principal Systems Engineer at MITRE, former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, and author of four books, including The Simplicity Cycle and Fire. Dan reflects on his innovative career, spanning military service, systems engineering, and prolific writing, sharing lessons on catalyzing change and simplifying complexity.Dan's anecdotes illuminate key ideas: the transformative power of collaboration—“a catalyst by themselves is just powder in a jar”—and the importance of fostering a culture that celebrates learning from failure. He introduces the concept of “failure cake,” a practice his team developed to destigmatize failure by celebrating attempts and extracting lessons with humor and camaraderie.A firm believer in the power of writing, Dan calls on professionals to contribute to their fields, using his own journey as a guidepost. With practical insights and humor, he explains how writing a book is not just achievable but transformative, offering “book math” as a framework for aspiring authors.Whether it's through his viral article Build Droids, Not Death Stars, his “Green Pen Squad” initiative, or MITRE's free innovation toolkit, Dan exemplifies how leaders can simplify, inspire, and innovate. Tune in for actionable wisdom on leadership, storytelling, and building teams that thrive on collaboration and resilience.Check out "Build Droids Not Death Stars", an articule that Dan wrote that went viral and led to his first book, was inspired by his daughters.Check out The MITRE Innovation Toolkit to support innovation created by a group of Catalysts that Dan brought together.Original music by Lynz Floren.

Failure is often seen as something to avoid, but Dan Ward sees it as a gateway to innovation. Dan is a military technologist, author, USAF veteran, and innovation catalyst at MITRE Corporation, and he and Lou talk about the profound lessons failure can teach. Drawing from his book LIFT: Innovation Lessons From Flying Machines That ALMOST Worked and The People Who NEARLY Flew Them, Ward shares stories of pre-Wright brothers (more accurately pre-Wright siblings) aviation experiments that, despite ending in failure, laid the groundwork for modern flight. He explains how studying and learning from setbacks can drive innovation and problem-solving in any field. Dan shares his innovation team's unique approach to failure: celebrating it with “failure cake.” This ritual helps his team process setbacks, learn from them, and destigmatize failure in a supportive environment. He also emphasizes the importance of storytelling, arguing that even the best ideas are meaningless if they can't be communicated clearly. The conversation highlights how embracing failure and sharing its lessons are essential for growth, whether in aviation, design, or technology. Mark your calendars! Lou announces that Dan will headline Rosenfeld Media's first Failure Friday on February 7, 2025, where he'll further discuss the failure cake practice.

In the lead up to Outlaw triathlon events, this is probably the most asked question. We get plenty of others and so this week it's time for something a little different.   In the run up to the Outlaw events I normally present webinars to outline the best training approach and answer common questions. This time we are doing this as podcast and I'm joined by Outlaw ambassador Dan Ward.  Dan will be asking me the questions, some based on his curiosity around his own training and others on behalf of other potential Outlaws who have submitted their questions via social media. (TIP! This advice is still relevant, even if you are doing a non-Outlaw long distance triathlon.)   Some of the questions include: How much training should I be doing each week for the Full?  Do I need a coach? Does Z2 training really work? How do I know I'll make the swim cut off? Road bike or TT? Will wearing Nike VaporFly help me get a faster run time? I need to lose 10kg before race day. We have a special guest.  His name is Dan Ward.  And he's an innovation catalyst at the MITRE Corporation.  Dan previously served for more than 20 years as an acquisition officer in the U.S. Air Force, where he specialized in leading high-speed, low-cost technology development programs.  Dan retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  While he was on active duty he helped establish the Air Force Research Laboratory's rapid innovation process. BILL YATES:  Dan Ward is also the author of three books.  We'll talk about “LIFT” specifically in the podcast that he released in 2019; “The Simplicity Cycle,” 2015; and “F.I.R.E.” in 2014. WENDY GROUNDS:  In our conversation with Dan we have a particular theme of innovation and managing complexity. BILL YATES:  Yeah.  So Dan has researched, of course his career was dedicated to this as well, and he's written books on this idea of innovation and applying innovation to various environments.  Certainly for project managers we can look at this, and we're going to share some advice and learn some lessons from this man as we talk about innovation and how to apply it to our projects. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Dan.  Welcome to Manage This. DAN WARD:  Wendy, thanks so much for having me.  I'm looking forward to this chat. Dan's Book LIFT WENDY GROUNDS:  Yeah, no, we are happy to have you.  And first thing we want to talk to you about is your books.  You've written a few books.  And your latest one is called “LIFT.”  Can you tell us a little bit about that? DAN WARD:  Yeah, absolutely.  So “LIFT” was such a fun book to write.  And it takes a close look at what I think is a really interesting part of history, the late 1800s, and then specifically the people who were trying to build airplanes in the decades immediately prior to the Wrights.  So all of these people failed.  None of their airplanes actually flew.  That wasn't until 1903 when the Wrights had their first successful airplane. But these experiences, these experiments, and the way they handled their failures have a lot of really interesting applications for challenges people are working on today.  So in terms of like solving hard problems, managing intellectual property, collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion.  You know, we think we invented that.  No.  They were dealing with those types of issues in the late 1800s.  So really, anyone who's trying to solve an unsolved problem or just even just a really hard problem, we can learn a lot from these aviation pioneers in the late 1800s.

While most people are Jet setting across the country, around the world, living that Instagram lifestyle, there is one man who is defying convention by simply keeping common sense infused in his life and businesses.   Dan Ward started his work life like many who have come before him by taking a journey into the college system, graduating and quickly learning that working for FedEx, Darden Restaurants, and other companies in Corporate America would not be enough to keep him free from the “golden handcuffs.” Today, Dan is a serial entrepreneur who has figured out how to replace himself as the technician and become the owner in various industries including gutter replacement, barbershops, real estate, and much more.  In this episode of Step It Up Entrepreneur, Tom and Dan get raw and real as they discuss the American educational system, the pros and cons of a college education, slugging it out in a comfy corporate lifestyle, and pivoting into the fulfilling world of entrepreneurship.  They'll discuss business hacks that have led them to get business in any industry up and running quickly and profitably.  This episode is so good, there are two parts to it.     What You'll Learn:   Why Dan prefers minivans to private jets  Two things Dan learned while working in corporate America The longstanding discussion of the value of a college education in today's technology-infused world  How applying a common sense approach to life and business saved him thousands of dollars  Being resourceful will keep you from having to learn hard lessons if you simply mimic what's already proven to be successful How to spot a good location for a brick and mortar One hack that will allow you to open any franchise type model without paying exorbitant fees And much more!  FAVORITE QUOTE: “So when I graduated college, I went to FedEx and was like, “I got this degree, bro!”  They told me they had an opening in Memphis as a Dock Supervisor and it was a position that required a 4-year degree.  They came back saying it started at $35,000. And I was like, but I have this piece of paper. Where's the money?”    Dan Ward     Connect with Dan Ward: Facebook Instagram    New Podcast Coming Soon: The Dirt Road CEO Podcast    How To Get Involved:   From his start in the GPS tracking industry to founding the Step It Up Academy, Tomas Keenan is on a mission to break out of the concept of “average” and reach the success that is anything but. I was pleased to have an impressive trio from MITRE join me to discuss the future of acquisition reform. Dan Ward, Pete Modigliani, and Matt MacGregor have been in on the ground floor of the Department's implementation of the Adaptive Acquisition Framework, which has been hailed as the "most transformational change to acquisition policy in decades." With six tailorable pathways, programs can potentially cut years of paperwork for software and rapid prototyping efforts. While there is certainly more effectiveness to squeeze out of the AAF, my guests are looking ahead to other elements of the "big A" acquisition systems that will need change to support the ideals of the Adaptive Acquisition Framework. For example, rapid prototyping efforts using the Middle Tier pathway don't have to use the JCIDS requirements process, but they still need a process that could take up to a year. Then it takes another two or more years to line up the funds to get started. These processes create barriers to programs being run with speed, thrift, and simplicity. Requirements, budgeting, oversight, and workforce provide the next frontier of acquisition reform. Last year, MITRE released an excellent report that outlined enterprise-level requirements and a proposal for an Adaptive Requirements Framework. This year, they released another report called Five-by-Five which took that even further into an Adaptive Budgeting Framework and implementation of portfolio management. https://www.mitre.org/sites/default/files/publications/pr-20-03241-1-five-by-five-five-disciplines-and-five-strategic-initiatives-for-the-pentagon-in-the-digital-age.pdf https://www.mitre.org/publications/technical-papers/modernizing-dod-requirements-enabling-speed-agility-and-innovation This podcast was produced by Eric Lofgren.
