The early period of the CIO could be said to have ended with the Little Steel strike in 1937, when the limits of the New Deal order were dramatically illustrated in the brutal repression and failure of the strike. But the CIO continued to grow through the 40s, and it was the war escalation that provided the context for it to do so. This episode will be devoted to the CIO's role in and relation to the war effort, and what it meant for this labor upsurge. This episode is devoted to the Little Steel strike in the summer of 1937, a tragic failure for the Steel Workers Organizing Committee and the CIO, and one that illustrated the limits of the New Deal order. It might appear excessive to devote an entire episode of the podcast to one strike, but Little Steel was in many ways a turning point, a key hinge in our story. To capture it well we also need to delve into the more general history of steel organizing in America, a fantastically brutal affair that reveals the soul of American capitalism. Guests in order of appearance: David Brody, Professor Emeritus of History at UC-Davis; Ahmed White, Nicholas Rosenbaum Professor of Law at the University of Colorado-Boulder; Nelson Lichtenstein, Professor of History at UC-Santa Barbara; Lizabeth Cohen, Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies at Harvard University; Daniel Nelson, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Akron; Melvyn Dubofsky, Professor Emeritus of History and Sociology at Binghamton University Clips in order of appearance: Gus Hall, “U.S. Communist Party 75th Anniversary,” October 23, 1994, https://www.c-span.org/video/?61145-1/us-communist-party-75th-anniversary (0:00); “AFL vs. CIO split in 1935,” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IsJZAknuIQ (7:47); John L. On the third episode of Organize the Unorganized, we examine the three initial major victories of the CIO in rubber, auto, and steel. We begin by recounting the story of the “first CIO strike” at the Goodyear complex in Akron, Ohio, a victorious strike that put the CIO on the map. We then turn to the great General Motors strike in the winter of 1937, perhaps the most iconic confrontation of the period and generally recognized as the CIO's transformational victory. We end briefly on the steel organizing campaign, whose success was drawn in part from the threatening militancy of the CIO. Guests in order of appearance: Ruth Milkman, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center; Daniel Nelson, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Akron; Nelson Lichtenstein, Professor of History at UC-Santa Barbara; Erik Loomis, Professor of History at the University of Rhode Island; Jeremy Brecher, Labor Historian; Steve Fraser, Labor Historian; Ahmed White, Nicholas Rosenbaum Professor of Law at the University of Colorado-Boulder; Melvyn Dubofsky, Professor Emeritus of History and Sociology at Binghamton University Clips, in order of appearance: “UAW Presents… SITDOWN,” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GdDupP8m6g (1:58, 10:32, 20:40, 21:57); John L. There have been many moments of labor upsurge in America, including the influx of members into the Knights of Labor in 1886, the dramatic growth of unions during and in the immediate aftermath of World War I, and the great public sector unionism surge of the 1960s and 70s, but none matches the scale of the 1930s, when millions of workers were unionized under the aegis of the great labor federation, the Congress of Industrial Organizations, or CIO. If we're looking to get millions of private-sector workers into the labor movement, there's really one time to look to, and that is the ascendant period of the CIO. In Organize the Unorganized, a forthcoming podcast from the Center for Work & Democracy at Arizona State University and Jacobin Magazine, we'll be telling the story of the CIO through the voices of prominent labor historians, including Jeremy Brecher, Robert Cherny, Dorothy Sue Cobble, Lizabeth Cohen, David Brody, Melvyn Dubofsky, Steve Fraser, Rick Halpern, William P. Jones, Nelson Lichtenstein, Erik Loomis, Ruth Milkman, Daniel Nelson, Bryan Palmer, Lisa Phillips, Ahmed White, and Jim Young. These interviews have been spliced together into an account of the rise, importance, and legacy of the CIO. In addition to being released on soundcloud.com/organizetheunorganized, these episodes will also be released on Jacobin magazine's podcast feed. Jacobin will also be publishing the individual interview transcriptions while the podcast is running.

In the lead-up to our season on the criminalization of protest we're bringing you part 1 of this excellent two-part Outside/In episode looking at this issue in the U.S. When members of the Oceti Sakowin gathered near the Standing Rock Reservation to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline, they decided on a strategy of nonviolent direct action. No violence… against people. But sabotage of property – well, that's another question entirely. Since the gathering at Standing Rock, anti-protest legislation backed by the fossil fuel industry has swept across the country. What happened? When is environmental protest considered acceptable… and when is it seen as a threat? This is the first of two episodes exploring the changing landscape of environmental protest in the United States, from Standing Rock to Cop City and beyond. Part II is available on Outside/In wherever you get your podcasts Featuring Chase Iron Eyes, Tokata Iron Eyes, Lesley Wood, Elly Page, and Connor Gibson. Season 2 was all about forgiveness, and we have a special treat for you in this bonus episode... Our dear friend and colleague Sherri Tate shares part of her own story and how the Lord brought her to a place of genuine healing and forgiveness after experiencing compound trauma and abuse. Sherri bravely shares her story of suffering and even her own sin, graciously dispels myths perpetuated by those within the church that harmed her, and offers a long view of forgiveness full of freedom and redemption that has come and holds hope for the future still. The stories shared in this episode are not explicit or graphic but they do involve murder, domestic violence and sexual, verbal, emotional, psychological and spiritual abuse so take caution if these are a part of your own story or if you have children who might be within listening distance. You can follow along with Sherri's ministry, Daughter By Design, on her website. In this episode, Sherri mentions the 5 aspects of true repentance as described by Steve and Celestia Tracy. We often hear about things being organic, and good for us but the truth is there are some ingredients in things such as our soaps that are actually drying our skin out or not nourishing the body as it should. We had a chance to talk with Daniel the Ceo of Its Just Lav a company that provides natural soaps for all people. Some people grow up having to use sensitive skin soaps but after talking with Daniel the ingredients list isnt much different than regular soap. Recently a solider was in fear for his life while being pulled over during a traffic stop and we also talk about this recent tragic news and also think back about times we have been pulled over and did not feel comfortable in day light let alone night where the solider was. As this episode is in production another bodycam footage was released in another incident where a officer claims he thought he pulled his taser instead of his gun, but still fired and shot yet another black male. What makes someone so fearful?! Daniel Nelson owner of @its_just_lav let Its just lav change the way you look at soap with the natural ingredients and no chemicals or anything harmful for the body. From the CoinDesk Global Macro news desk, this is Borderless – a twice-monthly roundup of the most important stories impacting Bitcoin and the crypto sector from around the world. On this episode, Nik, Anna, Daniel and CoinDesk tech reporter Colin Harper discuss Nigerian protestors using bitcoin, the digital yuan reaching retail users in China, the IMF talking about crypto, and more.In Nigeria, people are protesting police brutality and demanding the abolition of SARS, or the Special Anti-Robbery Squad police unit, an infamous special forces team known for abusing and harassing citizens. CoinDesk reporter Colin Harper joins the conversation to talk about how The Feminist Coalition, a movement advocating for women's rights in Nigeria, has been using bitcoin to fundraise and help people hurt by the police during the protests. After the movement's bank account was frozen, it switched to bitcoin donations, using bitcoin as a censorship-resistant tool, just as activists in another part of the world – Belarus – are doing. On the central bank digital currency front, China is charging forward with its digital yuan project: last week, about two million people got free digital yuans in a lottery in Shenzhen. People could spend the giveaway tokens in over 3,000 local stores, as Reuters reported. The consumers haven't been impressed so far, but maybe that's only a beginning,Unlike in China, central bankers in the West are not that sure about CBDCs. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) issued a report discussing the benefits of issuing digital tokens by central banks. Maybe the most interesting part, the International Monetary Fund talks about the Big Tech stablecoin projects and what's at stake there. Reporters Nikhilesh De, Daniel Nelson, Anna Baydakova and Colin Harper discuss these issues and more on today's episode of Borderless.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
From the CoinDesk Global Macro news desk, this is Borderless – a twice-monthly roundup of the most important stories impacting Bitcoin and the crypto sector from around the world. It's created by reporters Nikhilesh De, Anna Baydakova and Daniel Nelson.Last week, two federal U.S.agencies brought charges against BitMEX, one of the world's largest crypto derivatives trading platforms, alleging the company violated multiple laws by allowing U.S. customers to trade its options contracts. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, a prosecutor, claimed the exchange and its owners, CEO Arthur Hayes, CTO Samuel Reed, Ben Delo and Gregory Dwyer violated the Bank Secrecy Act by not conducting any know-your-customer procedures, while the Commodity Futures Trading Commission alleged that BitMEX allowed U.S. customers to trade on its platform, despite the fact that the startup hadn't registered as an exchange with the company. The charges are both criminal and civil, and the SDNY announced that while it had arrested one of Hayes' colleagues, Hayes himself remains at large.Across the pond, the European Union is preparing to set the fate of its much-hyped “digital euro.” In its latest report, released last week, the bloc's central bank reiterated the importance of preparing a EU CBDC future but once again refused to commit to it. That decision is expected in the middle of next year. But central bankers are nonetheless thinking through what a “digital euro” might look like right now. For example, one “requirement” is that any “digital euro” should have “cash-like features.” That means broad accessibility, offline capabilities, widespread acceptance, all the cash-like features we don't even think about. ECB officials even set “strong european branding” as a requirement.Belarus has been protesting against its president Alexander Lukashenko since August. And since then, the government has been trying to limit access to the information: in addition to multiple internet outages, local media and political movement websites have been blocked. News publications are looking to new, decentralized tools to fight back.A San Francisco-based startup called Clostra is offering a peer-to-peer file-sharing service called NewNode. Users can connect devices using the internet, Bluetooth or WiFi hot-spots, sharing information similarly to how torrent clients operate (indeed, Clostra was founded by former BitTorrent director of engineering Stanislav Shalunov). Reporters Nikhilesh De, Daniel Nelson and Anna Baydakova discuss these issues and more on today's episode of Borderless.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
From the CoinDesk Global Macro newsdesk, this is Borderless - A twice-monthly roundup of the most important stories impacting bitcoin and the crypto sector from around the world. It's created by reporters Nikhilesh De, Anna Baydakova and Danny NelsonOn today's show: the FinCEN files, AirTM isn't working in Venezuela the way people hoped and stablecoin regulations are reappearing in the U.S. and Europe.CoinDesk's inaugural episode of Borderless discusses the FinCEN Files, which showed that not only is a global superpower keeping tabs on thousands of financial transactions, but it doesn't appear to actually be tamping downon the alleged crimes it purportedly wants to halt using this data. What's more, many of these transaction records aren't suspicious. Should the government hold on to this personal and financial data for 20 years?Stablecoin regulations are resurging in both Europe and the U.S., with government officials in both regions publishing new guidance discussing how stablecoins might be regulated and how issuers can interact with banks. The EU wants stablecoin issuers to abide by strict "e-money" rules, according to draft legislation leaked last week. Meanwhile, a federal banking regulator in the U.S. says nationally regulated banks can offer stablecoin issuers financial services. This applies specifically to hosted wallets, meaning wallets that are controlled by a trusted (regulated) third party. Wallets where users directly control the keys do not fall into the guidance. For its part, the Securities and Exchange Commission warns that some of these digital assets may or may not look like securities, and recommends that issuers contact it prior to launching a new token.Another stablecoin story down in Venezuela has us rethinking whether the country's purported crypto economy is really as robust as the headlines make you think. CoinDesk contributor Jose Rafael Pena Gholam writes that opposition leader Juan Guaido's attempted airdrop of $19 million in stablecoins to Venezuela's “health heroes” has fallen flat. The money came from funds seized by U.S authorities. Guaido was hoping to use it to back pay thousands of health workers with a $100 bonus for three months of work, but the drop has been hampered by the Maduro regime and tech hiccups.Reporters Nikhilesh De, Daniel Nelson and Anna Baydakova discuss these issues and more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
