Jon Jordan talks to Pixels CEO Luke Barwikowski about the game's forthcoming adoption of the new Apptokens standard, which as well as seeing the launch of the spend/stake-only vPIXEL token, will also herald a new staking model, which will use the token to boost marketing for Pixels and its partner games.[4:42] Games like Axie and Pixels have been massive successes. We need to make them sustainable.[5:25] Some of the issues for web3 games are just gaming issues. Web2 games are not doing well.[7:50] DAUs is not the primary metric for Pixels. It's secondary compared to net revenue.[9:00] We thought we could convert DAUs into paying users. We can but the rate is very low.[11:45] In particularly, it's hard to convert paying users into net paying users.[13:53] We're doing a lot of work to figure out who are the right users to give incentives to.[18:20] The three elements that are required to make a great web3 game. [19:10] Explaining how ERC721C enforced NFT royalties aligns incentives for devs and NFT traders.[20:50] Apptokens (ERC20C) do something similar for fungible tokens. [21:38] A lot of the players we give PIXEL tokens to just sell them - this is misalignment.[21:50] Apptokens allows us to give more tokens to players who spend them in-game. [22:25] We're doing this with our new vPIXEL token, which can only be staked or spent, not sold. [23:48] We want to preference players who use the PIXEL tokens through its tokenomics.[27:36] This is going to be the industry-standard soon. [28:41] The new staking system embraces all the games published in the Pixels ecosystem.[28:50] This sees 28 million PIXEL distributed monthly via these games, giving rewards to stakers.[33:17] This won't be limited to Ronin games, although the staking contracts will be on Ronin.[34:47] How the core Pixels game will fit into this new multi-game PIXEL token ecosystem.[36:35] Pixels is launching a mobile-first Tamagotchi-style pet app in June/July.[38:27] Players who want to convert vPIXEL to PIXEL will pay a c.50% withdrawal fee.[40:47] It doesn't matter how web3 a game is. What matters is whether it works.[42:30] Pixels has given out over $100 million of rewards in terms of PIXEL tokens.

While DeFi's ultimate goal is to provide an alternative for TradFi, blockchain gaming caters to retail masses, onboarding millions of users to crypto through incentives and fun gameplay. The greatest success story in Web3 gaming thus far has been, without a doubt, Axie Infinity. Apart from creating an engaged community whose early adopters also experienced rags-to-riches stories, it kickstarted an entire movement around play-to-earn gaming. Many have tried copying it, yet most of them failed. Axie Infinity managed to design a sustainable economy that combined NFTs and fungible tokens. The result was the first gamified crypto mining event, at scale. In order to accommodate such a massive demand, in a time when L2 rollups were still in R&D, Sky Mavis founded Ronin, a gaming-oriented Ethereum sidechain. The community that formed around Axie Infinity created a tremendous network effect, solidifying Ronin's PMF as a gaming powerhouse. Before long, many up-and-coming titles migrated to Ronin, and the growth effects in all their key metrics (i.e. DAUs, transactions, revenue, etc.) further fuelled the flywheel.Topics covered in this episode:Jeff's backgroundCryptokittiesJoining Axie Infinity and how it evolvedMonetizing Axie's economyThe recipe for successful blockchain gamesBuilding Ronin, the gaming L1On-chain vs. off-chain game elementsCommunity buildingRonin's economy & composabilityMost suitable gaming genre for Web3AI x gamingCrypto gaming investmentsRonin's current state and future roadmapAxie's upcoming MMOEpisode links:Jeff Zirlin on XAxie Infinity on XRonin on XSky Mavis on XSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. Plus policing on the subway and upcoming transit conferencesLast week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul abruptly put a stop to New York City's planned congestion charges due to come into effect June 30th. This announcement took nearly everyone by surprise, critics and supporters alike, and this week we have Matthew Daus return as our guest to talk about this sudden change, what it means for the New York MTA's budget, and if congestion pricing will return to the city. We've talked about congestion pricing many times on the show before, from Matthew a year ago to the outgoing head of MTA Rich Davey and just recently Transport for London's Andy Lord. It's a hot topic with strong opinions on both sides of the issue. With congestion charging in NYC seen as a test bed for cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, its fate is now uncertain in the U.S.Matthew and Paul continue the discussion on another hot topic right now: transit safety and policing. Recently the U.S. National Guard was deployed in the New York Subway to fight rash of violent incidents. Matthew and Paul talk about safety in transit and how it affects returning ridership.Paul and Matthew wrap up their conversation with a discussion of the International Association of Transportation Regulators upcoming conference in October and their new collaboration with the CoMotion conference.Next week, Erick Leishman CEO of WeDriveU (formerly National Express), talks with Paul about the state of contracting in the U.S. and its essential role in delivering innovative transit solutions.Transit Unplugged is brought to you by Modaxo https://www.modaxo.comHost: Paul ComfortProducer: Paul ComfortEditor and Writer: Tris HusseyExecutive Producer: Julie GatesSpecial thanks to:Brand design: Tina OlagundoyeSocial Media: Tatyana MechkarovaMarketing content, Transit Unplugged Newsletter, & transit puns: Tris HusseyIf you have a question or comment, email us at info@transitunplugged.com.Follow us on social media: LinkedIn - Twitter - Threads- Instagram - FacebookSign up for the Transit Unplugged Newsletter00:00 Introduction and Breaking News00:51 Expert Guest Introduction: Matthew Daus02:33 Discussion on Congestion Charging11:10 Crime and Safety on the New York Subway15:56 Matthew Daus' Professional Roles and Upcoming Conference20:18 Collaboration with CoMotion21:58 Conclusion and Final Thoughts22:29 Coming up next week on Transit UnpluggedDisclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this program are those of the guests, and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of Modaxo Inc., its affiliates or subsidiaries, or any entities they represent (“Modaxo”). Roblox Corporation reports strong user growth and financial results, while prioritizing safety, innovation, and expansion in their first-quarter earnings call.Content: In the ever-evolving landscape of online gaming and virtual experiences, Roblox Corporation demonstrated its robust performance and strategic agility during the first quarter of 2024, as revealed in their earnings call on May 9th.The company reported a 17% year-over-year growth in daily active users (DAUs), reaching over 77 million, with a notable 22% increase in users over the age of 13. CEO David Baszucki highlighted advancements in enhancing user experience, such as dynamic heads that track the camera, layered clothing for avatars, increased voice usage, and improved anti-cheat systems.Roblox's international expansion efforts yielded positive results, with year-over-year growth rates of 50% in Japan and 58% in India. User engagement metrics were strong, with total hours engaged rising by 15% year-over-year to 16.7 billion. Financially, revenue climbed 22% to $801 million, while bookings grew by 19.4% to $923.8 million.Despite the positive indicators, Roblox reported a net loss of $272 million, relatively flat compared to the previous year's first quarter. However, cash from operations increased by 37% year-over-year to $238 million, and free cash flow jumped 133% to $191 million. Baszucki acknowledged a more conservative approach to guidance for 2024, reflecting prudent management amidst unpredictable market conditions.Roblox introduced initiatives to reinforce its market position and enhance user experience, catering to an older audience and expanding globally, particularly in Japan and India. The company's investment priorities focus on maintaining a safe, innovative, and inclusive platform, enriching the developer ecosystem, and solidifying its position in the virtual economy. While Roblox's first-quarter performance and strategic outlook demonstrate its commitment to innovation, expansion, and user engagement, the company acknowledges the complexities of the digital era and the need for a realistic approach to future expectations. What unfolds when tragedy strikes not once, but twice, under eerily similar circumstances? This is the gripping subject of a recent "Hidden Killers" podcast episode, where Tony Brueski, alongside retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke, delve into the mysterious deaths of two women, both fiancées of Robert Daus, in the same house and under his care. Dreeke begins by emphasizing the rarity of such occurrences, noting the statistical unlikelihood of two suicides, especially involving firearms, in such a scenario. Women typically do not use firearms in suicides, making these cases even more peculiar. He explains that the likelihood of suicide by firearm increases significantly if there's a gun in the household, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Brueski highlights another curious detail: the use of the non-dominant hand in the alleged suicide of one of the women. This unusual factor, combined with the already low probability of a woman using a firearm for suicide, intensifies the suspicion surrounding these deaths. The discussion takes a turn when focusing on Daus's reported behavior, particularly his alleged anger issues. Dreeke points out how such behavior could exacerbate an already volatile situation. The conversation also touches on the response of law enforcement and fire department officials, with Brueski finding their approach unusually accommodating towards Daus, raising questions about potential bias or conflict of interest. Moreover, the hosts discuss the broader implications of these deaths on public trust in institutions. Dreeke underscores the need for open, transparent communication and vulnerability from the authorities to maintain public trust, especially when a public servant is under scrutiny. As the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that the investigation's outcome will hinge on electronic communications and toxicology reports. Brueski and Dreeke speculate that these will be crucial in unraveling the truth behind these deaths, whether they were tragic coincidences or something more sinister. In sum, the episode of "Hidden Killers" paints a picture of a complex investigation, where statistical improbabilities, behavioral patterns, and institutional responses converge to create a narrative that is as intriguing as it is troubling. The deaths of Grace Holland and Sarah Sweeney under the care of Robert Daus present a puzzle that challenges conventional understandings of crime, suicide, and public trust in law enforcement. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
What are the odds of two tragic deaths occurring under the same roof, involving the same person, yet remaining unexplained? This question forms the basis of a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott discuss the mysterious circumstances surrounding firefighter Robert Daus. Daus, who currently faces no charges and maintains his innocence, has experienced the deaths of two fiancées in his home over the last three years. The first, Grace Holland, a mother of four, died from a gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide despite using her non-dominant hand. Brueski highlights the unusual nature of this incident, noting, "It was deemed suicide... using a weapon. All points that usually don't happen all that frequently." The second fiancée, Sarah Sweeney, was also found dead in his home, with toxicology reports still pending. Scott comments on the 911 call made by Daus, observing his unusually calm demeanor. "He was so matter of fact and calm... it was odd," she notes, adding to the mystery of the situation. The discussion also touches on the potential influence of Daus's profession on his reaction, with Brueski speculating whether his exposure to traumatic events might have numbed him to such horrors. Further deepening the enigma, Brueski and Scott discuss a phone call from a detective investigating the case, indicating a possible leniency or familiarity between law enforcement and fire department personnel. Scott suggests that such camaraderie could inadvertently affect the investigation, stating, "It's human nature to cover for each other... and we have to always be aware of it." What happens when repeated tragedies strike under the same roof, raising questions of foul play and potential cover-ups? This enigma is the focus of a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," where host Tony Brueski and former felony prosecutor and attorney Eric Faddis discuss the perplexing case involving firefighter Robert Daus. Daus, who has not been charged with any crime, has been linked to the deaths of two fiancées, Grace Holland in and Sarah Sweeney, both occurring in his home near St. Louis. Brueski highlights the unusual circumstances of Holland's death, particularly her use of the non-dominant hand in what was ruled a suicide. Faddis, bringing his legal expertise, points out the alarming pattern: "Either this dude is the most unlucky person in the world, or there is something fishy going on." The conversation then shifts to potential issues with the investigation, including a too-cozy relationship between the Krav Corp police department and the fire department. A suspiciously casual phone call from a detective to Daus requesting his phone, a potential key piece of evidence, is particularly concerning. Faddis notes, "To think that this thing doesn't happen would just be naive. It absolutely does happen." Faddis shares his experience as a prosecutor, recalling a case where a police sergeant was given preferential treatment in a DUI investigation, suggesting a possible parallel with Daus's situation. He expresses concern about the impact of potential investigative delays and biases on the pursuit of justice. As Brueski and Faddis delve deeper into the case, questions about the integrity of the investigation and the possibility of lost evidence emerge. "What evidence has been lost? What evidence are we never going to get again in what could be a very serious homicide investigation?" Faddis asks, underscoring the challenges in such cold cases. The Daus case, still unresolved and shrouded in mystery, leaves the public wondering: In a situation where the lines between professional camaraderie and investigative integrity blur, can justice truly be served? The discovery of Dr. Sarah Sweeney's lifeless body in the home of local fire captain Robert Daus has sent shockwaves through the community, eerily mirroring the tragic events that unfolded in the same house three years earlier. As investigators delve into the circumstances surrounding both deaths, questions linger, and families seek answers.* On Saturday, January 13, Frontenac Police reported the discovery of Dr. Sarah Sweeney's body in the home she shared with her fiance, Robert Daus, a fire captain. There were no apparent signs of struggle at the scene, but the sudden death raised immediate concerns. Dr. Sweeney, originally from West Virginia, had recently relocated to Missouri to establish her podiatry practice, bringing with her a reputation for her passion for animals. The link between Robert Daus and Sarah Sweeney can be traced back to their encounter during Sweeney's emergency room shift shortly after she had moved to St. Louis. Described as "vibrant and outgoing," Sweeney was not only dedicated to her medical career but also known for her rescue and ownership of several dogs and cats over the years. Tragically, the discovery of Sweeney's lifeless body echoes a previous incident in the same house. In 2020, Grace Holland, a 35-year-old mother of four and Daus's fiancee at the time, met a similar fate, succumbing to a single gunshot wound to the head. Despite her death initially being ruled as a suicide, the circumstances surrounding it have raised significant doubts. The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Grace Holland's family in July alleged that "Daus has never given any explanation regarding what happened the night of Grace's death, much less explained how Grace went from being in bed at the Conway house to dead in the Fairways house seven hours later." The lawsuit further questioned the nature of Holland's death, given her right-handedness and the apparent inconsistency with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left temple. In addition to the questions surrounding the deaths, the lawsuit detailed allegations of physical and mental abuse within Daus and Holland's relationship. It claimed that Daus pressured Holland to work for his family company to control her finances and manipulated property ownership matters, leaving her off the deed of the house they had purchased together. The legal action also brought to light text messages suggesting a tumultuous relationship, with Daus repeatedly expressing his desire to end the engagement. Despite the frequent conflicts, Holland's family believed there was something suspicious about her death. Now, with the eerie parallel between Sarah Sweeney's death and Grace Holland's tragedy, there are renewed concerns and questions about the events in Daus's home. The circumstances surrounding both deaths have drawn attention, and the families involved are seeking answers. As investigations continue, Sarah Sweeney's family is awaiting the results of autopsy and toxicology reports, which may provide crucial insights into her untimely passing. Meanwhile, the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Grace Holland's family remains ongoing, as they continue to seek justice and clarity regarding her death. Both cases have prompted public interest, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to either incident to come forward. The investigation into Sarah Sweeney's death is being handled by the Frontenac Police Department, reachable at 314-373-6509, while the St. Louis County Police can be contacted at 314-615-5400 regarding Grace Holland's case. The community and families involved hope that a thorough examination will finally bring closure and answers to these tragic events. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Background information: In a shocking turn of events, allegations of contradictory statements and abusive behavior have come to light surrounding Missouri fire captain Robert Daus, following the tragic deaths of two women connected to him. The wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Grace Holland, his first fiancée, has exposed a disturbing pattern of abuse and questionable circumstances in her demise. Grace Holland's death in 2020, marked by a single gunshot wound to the head, initially led to a ruling of suicide. However, her family has persistently demanded justice, asserting that her death was not thoroughly investigated. The lawsuit they filed sheds light on the troubled relationship between Grace Holland and Robert Daus. According to the lawsuit, Holland endured both psychological and physical abuse during her four-year relationship with Daus. Incidents of physical violence, including pushing, shoving, and dragging, were reported. Her mother, Patricia, even witnessed bruises on her daughter's arms, thighs, and spine as a result of Daus's alleged aggression. Daus is accused of manipulating Holland's financial situation, pressuring her to leave her job and work for a company he owned. Instead of paying her directly, the company paid Daus, giving him control over the money, and consequently, over Grace. The engagement ring, a symbol of their commitment, vanished after Grace Holland's death, leading to suspicions that it might have been tampered with. Moreover, the circumstances of her death raise questions. Holland was right-handed, but she was shot in her left temple, a detail inconsistent with her dominant hand and suggesting that the shooter may have stood opposite her, using their right hand. Text messages exchanged between Holland and Daus in the days leading up to her death reveal a tumultuous relationship marked by moments of extreme abuse and sudden shifts to seemingly mundane conversations. Daus repeatedly offered Holland money to abort their child, and these messages paint a picture of a deeply troubled relationship. On the fateful morning of Holland's death, Daus provided two conflicting accounts of the incident. Initially, he reported that Holland had hugged him and then shot herself in the bedroom. However, later at the police station, accompanied by his lawyer, he presented a different narrative, stating that Holland had hugged him and then uttered the word "Goodbye" before shooting herself. The lawsuit and these allegations have raised serious doubts about the circumstances surrounding Grace Holland's death. While Robert Daus was never charged with a crime in connection to her death, her family firmly believes that he is liable for her wrongful death. Tragically, this is not the first time that Robert Daus's name has been linked to a woman's untimely death. In a startling and disturbing pattern, his second fiancée, Dr. Sarah Sweeney, was recently found dead in his home in suburban St. Louis. The investigation into Sweeney's death remains ongoing. The Holland family's fight for justice has been reignited in the wake of these events, echoing the sentiments of Dr. Sweeney's mother, Teresa Sweeney Light, who expressed a desire for "truthful and fair" closure. The unresolved questions surrounding these tragic deaths continue to cast a shadow over Robert Daus and the investigations into these unsettling cases. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Monthly Roundup #11: October 2023, published by Zvi on October 4, 2023 on LessWrong. It never stops. I'm increasingly building distinct roundups for various topics, in particular I'm splitting medical and health news out. Let's get to the rest of it. Bad News A simple model of why everything sucks: It is all optimized almost entirely for the marginal user, who the post calls Marl. Marl hates when there are extra buttons on the screen or any bit of complexity is offered, even when he is under zero obligation to use it or care, let alone being asked to think, so everything gets dumbed down. Could companies really be this stupid, so eager to chase the marginal user a little bit more that they cripple the functionality of their products? Very much so, yes, well past the point where it makes financial sense to do so. The metrics form a tyranny, invisible costs are increasingly paid on the alter of visible DAUs and cost of customer acquisition and 30-day retention, and that's that. What is to be done about it? My proposed solution is to build interfaces, filters, recommendation engines and other such goodies on top of existing sucky products, probably involving the use of LLMs and other AI in various ways, to make the sucky products suck less. In many cases this seems super doable. With the rise of AI, the data you would gather along the way would potentially pay for the whole operation. I continue trying to make this happen low-key behind the scenes. Periodic reminder from Patrick McKenzie that your phone number with any major American carrier can and will be compromised at a time not of your choosing if someone cares enough to do that, as happened recently to Vitalik Buterin. Socially engineering a store employee is a rather trivial task. So if you care about your security, you need to avoid letting anyone use your phone for two-factor authentication or otherwise plan to be fine when this happens. Hasan Minhaj admits that he made up a lot of the key details he uses in his stand-up, in ways that greatly alter the serious impact of the story, not merely modifying for comedic effect. Eliezer says this is sad, as he knew journalists did such things but expected better of a comedian. Robin Hanson confirms that it matters via a poll. Robin Hanson: "Does it matter that much of it never happened to him?" Apparently yes, it does matter. Hasan Minhaj has talent. His joke construction and delivery is spot on, despite a constant struggle with the axes he is constantly grinding. Now we know that he was cheating with the axes, which makes it much worse. Indeed, despite claiming he only lies in his stand-up, in a real sense his comedy was genuine the whole time, but he felt the need to mix it with deeply dishonest journalism. The concept of lightgassing, as proposed by Spencer Greenberg: Affirming someone's known-to-be false beliefs or statements in order to be supportive (or, I would add, to avoid making them angry or incur favor, which is also common). As Spencer notes, the key is often to validate someone's feelings, without validating their false beliefs. Having a name for this might be useful, so people can request others avoid it, or explain why they are not doing it. Disunity Unity is a highly useful game development tool. If you program in Unity, the result will work across a wide variety of platforms. Emergents TCG was programmed in Unity, which solved some of our problems without creating any new ones. Then Unity decided to retroactively change its pricing to make itself prohibitively expensive to small developers. Including removing the GitHub repo that tracks license changes, and updating their license to remove the clause that lets you use the TOS from the version you shipped with, then insisting already shipped games pay the new fees.
