The Phoenix Force and Other Drama This week on the Podcast, Brian and Darryl are back after an unexpected hiatus due to Brian’s Achilles Tendon surgery, and they are reviewing the second half of X-Men ’97 season 1! Episode Index Intro: 0:07 X-Men ’97: 4:02 X-Men ’97 (Disney+) Out 10 Are Charles and Magnus an Items Darryl: 9/10 Brian: 8.5/10 Season Summary X-Men ’97 begins with Cyclops uncovering a new anti-mutant technology, leading to a reunion with an old foe and the addition of a new team member. Magneto, now leading the X-Men due to Charles Xavier’s last will, faces trial for his past crimes, while anti-mutant rioters test his resolve. As the team confronts a visitor with a dangerous secret, Jubilee is transported into a 16-bit video game, reliving the X-Men’s greatest adventures. The season continues with Genosha preparing to join the UN, leading to political intrigue and media scrutiny for the X-Men. Storm faces her worst fears in a two-part storyline involving her relationship with Forge. Cyclops targets Bolivar Trask but discovers a deeper manipulation at play. The season culminates in a three-part epic where the X-Men must unite against a formidable new threat, challenging their unity and the dream of peaceful mutant-human coexistence Episode 6: “Lifedeath (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 17, 2024 Summary: During a war between the Shi’ar and Kree empires, Shi’ar empress Lilandra Neramani announces her engagement to a now-healed Xavier. Refusing to accept her sister marrying a Terran, Deathbird invokes the Rite of M’Dashaa and challenges Xavier to purge all his memories of Earth to prove his loyalty to the Shi’ar. Xavier’s refusal to renounce his memories of the X-Men results in a battle between the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and Deathbird’s supporters until Xavier pulls everyone into the astral plane to educate them on co-existence. When this lesson is interrupted by a psychic vision of Gambit’s death, Xavier returns to Earth. At the ranch, Forge uses his mother’s spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helps him search for a rare cactus that cures the poison. Storm finds the cactus in a cave but is again cornered by the Adversary. Overcoming her fears, Storm regains her powers and defeats the Adversary. Storm heals Forge, and then they learn about the attack on Genosha. Elsewhere, Trask is confronted by Mister Sinister who warns that Genosha was just the beginning. Episode 7: “Bright Eyes” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 24, 2024 Summary: As the X-Men hold a funeral for Gambit, Rogue angrily searches for Gyrich and Trask. After gaining information from General Thunderbolt Ross and Captain America, Rogue finds Gyrich in Mexico and absorbs his memories. Gyrich is murdered later that night. While assisting in the recovery efforts at Genosha, the X-Men are contacted by a terrified Trask who tells them that he is in Madripoor. They get Rogue on the way. Roberto and Jubilee visit Roberto’s mother and tell her that he is a mutant; she asks him to keep his identity a secret. In Madripoor, the X-Men learn that Sinister and the UN’s secret “OZT” division have been developing a highly advanced Sentinel program. Rogue drops Trask to his death, unknowingly activating programming that turns him into a human–Sentinel hybrid. Cable arrives, defeats Trask with an EMP, and explains that Sinister is working with a greater threat that they must stop. This threat, who murdered Gyrich, is Bastion. He reveals to Sinister that Xavier is alive in space and that Magneto, presumed dead in the Genosha attack, is also alive and is Bastion’s prisoner. Episode 8: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 1)” Directed by: Jake Castorena Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 1, 2024 Summary: Part 1 : The UN reveals to the world that Xavier is alive, inciting an anti-mutant protest outside the school. Cable explains to the X-Men that the Genosha massacre is an “absolute point” in time that cannot be changed, and Bastion will use it to start a 300-year war that will lead to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Cyclops, Jean, and Cable travel to Harmony, Pennsylvania, where they learn that Bastion is a human–machine hybrid who was conceived after his father was infected with part of the advanced, time-traveling Sentinel Nimrod. Members of “Operation: Zero Tolerance” (OZT) express concern over the massacre and ask Dr. Cooper to monitor Bastion, who explains to her how he is turning humans into Prime Sentinels like Trask using Sinister’s techno-organic virus. Prime Sentinels activate around the globe, attack mutants, and burn down Xavier’s school. A horrified Cooper releases Magneto, who creates a world-wide blackout that kills thousands of people and shuts down all of the Prime Sentinels. Wolverine fears that Magneto has declared war as Xavier returns and summons the X-Men. Episode 9: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 8, 2024 Summary: Part 2 : Xavier is met with some distrust, but the X-Men focus on stopping Bastion and convincing Magneto to reverse his blackout. Magneto re-establishes his mutant haven on Asteroid M, choosing to leave the Earth without power and rejecting Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existence. He invites the X-Men to join him, which Rogue and Roberto do. The rest of the X-Men return to their former base on Muir Island to regroup, before splitting into two teams: Cyclops’s Blue Team goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto while Storm and Jean’s Gold Team heads to Bastion’s hideout in the Galápagos Islands. Beast and Forge create a collar that can block Bastion’s technopathy and sever his control over the Sentinels. The Gold Team battles an army of Bastion-controlled Sentinels and Sinister, who takes control of Cable’s mind and uses him to overpower Jean; she sends a desperate psychic message to Cyclops. On Asteroid M, Xavier attempts to take control of Magneto’s mind but is blocked. Wolverine stabs and seriously injures Magneto who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skeleton. Episode 10: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 15, 2024 Summary: Part 3 : With Wolverine critically injured, Xavier takes control of Magneto and restores power to Earth, fracturing Magneto’s mind. Jean—connecting to the cosmic power of the Phoenix—places the collar on Bastion, restoring the Prime Sentinels’ humanity, and reverses Sinister’s mutant augmentations which frees Cable. The X-Men fight to prevent Bastion from crashing Asteroid M into Earth and causing a new extinction event. Still, it plummets after the U.S. government launches missiles at the asteroid hoping to destroy it. With Xavier’s help, Magneto regains consciousness and sends the asteroid into space. It explodes and most of the X-Men are presumed dead. Six months later, Bishop arrives and tells Forge that the X-Men are trapped in time: Cyclops and Jean are in 3960 A.D., a desolate future where they encounter Mother Askani and a young Nathan; and Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet En Sabah Nur, a young version of Apocalypse. In a mid-credits scene, Apocalypse finds one of Gambit’s playing cards in present-day Genosha. Hopefully with Marvel Phase 5 introducing Deadpool & Wolverine (Deadpool 3 feat Hugh Jackman) & Fantastic Four, I hope Kevin Feige takes note of what makes this series so beautiful! #Xmen #Marvel #MCU #firsttimewatching #MovieReaction #Deadpool #Wolverine #Cyclops #Jubilee #Rogue #Gambit #Beast #Storm #Magneto #ProfessorX #Xmen97 #xmentheanimatedseries  Follow Coy Jandreau:  Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coyjandreau?l... Guido and Rob return to the world of Storm, Wolverine and company as it's X-Men time once again! This week's episode focuses on the two-part What If from Kurt Busiek and Tod Smith from 1993 that sees the X-Men turn against each other, Cable fight Wolverine, Magneto in the White House, Sentinels conquering the world, an atomic bomb explosion and much more! But first, we travel back to the seminal start of Chris Claremont and Jim Lee's collaboration where our favorite mutants go from the Shi'ar to the Savage Land. We wrap up by discussing X-Men 97, Deadpool & Wolverine and the eternal question, X-Men movie or X-Men tv show. Ep. 128 What if Cable had destroyed the X-Men & Magneto took over the USA?from Marvel Comics What If Volume 2 #46 & 47 (1993)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersIt's back to the world of the X-Men! We start off with covering a classic run from writer Chris Claremont as he first partners with artist Jim Lee. Then we ask the question: What If Cable had destroyed the X-Men and Magneto took over the USA in an epic two issue What If that features appearances from the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and almost every X-Men villain. Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Things get cosmic as we discuss GLADIATOR! Doc has no shortage of confidence when it comes to dealing with this Strontian - are you not entertained? Intro Extra Life reminder Background (3:50) Gladiator of the Imperial Guard created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum in The X-Men #107 (Oct 1977) Introduced as a member of the Imperial Guard of the Shi'ar Empire, serving under Emperor D'Ken, brother of the exiled Lilandra Kallark is a Strontian, and the race is incredibly strong, but only when devoted to a principle - Kallark and other Strontians were vying for a spot in the guard, when they were ordered to return to Strontia and kill their elders - only Kallark obeyed without question, learning that it was a test of loyalty set up by the elders to protect the homeworld He encountered several heroes along his journey, as he continued to serve whoever was in charge of the Shi'ar Empire - D'Ken, Lilandra, Deathbird, and Vulcan Kallark defends the Empire against Vulcan and his assault, but when Vulcan leads a coup and takes over, Kallark is honor-bound to serve, although he has fleeting thoughts of doubt On Vulcan's orders, Kallark and the guard attack the wedding of Crystal and Ronan, intended to unite the Kree and Inhumans, though he sides with Lilandra to prevent her execution, he is unable to prevent a later assassination He accepts the position of Emperor of the Shi'ar to prevent further bloodshed and war, but appoints two advisors to help him handle most of the logistics of running the empire Joins the Annihilators to give himself an outlet for fighting, but refuses a leadership role Joins the Galactic Council, where he decides that Earth must be destroyed to save the universe from incursions, but when it was restored, no memory remained of the destruction Put a time-displaced Jean Grey on trial for her “future” crimes as Phoenix After Xandra is discovered, Kallark hands over the throne of the Shi'ar empire to her and returns to his role as head of the Guard Issues - More than you think you know (11:10) The waxing and waning of his self-esteem and focus. It's a function of the Strontian species that their physical abilities are all directly tied to their confidence level and their belief in themselves and their purpose. When Gladiator believes he can do so, he is powerful enough to knock planets out of their orbit, burn Galactus with his heat vision, and is said to have once ripped a black hole in half. Which I really hope was just an idle boast, because there's just...so many things wrong with that sentence. When he doubts himself, he becomes weak enough to get smacked around by Cannonball. A slavish devotion to his sense of duty. Gladiator takes his oath of loyalty to the Shi'ar throne and his position as Praetor of the Imperial Guard VERY seriously. He begins his career of imperial service when the Emperor orders him and the rest of the cadets being evaluated with him to kill the Council of Elders of his home planet as a test of loyalty. Most of the rest of the cadets refuse the order and rebel. Gladiator obeys it without question. He's had to serve a string of emperors and empresses who were objectively very bad people, from T'Korr to D'Ken to Deathbird to Vulcan. He hates the things he's ordered to do most of the time, but is a loyal servant of the throne through and through, purposefully keeping his focus single-mindedly on his duty in order to keep his powers at their maximum level and best perform his duties. The only time he ever wavers is when he's ordered to execute Lilandra, which is a pretty high bar, all things considered. (18:38) Lack of faith in his ability to lead anything that's not the Guard. When Vulcan and Deathbird are dispatched after War of Kings, Gladiator really doesn't want to take charge of what's left of the empire, and would rather anyone else be leader besides him. When he's with the Annihilators, he has no interest in any kind of a leadership role despite arguably being the team's most powerful member. When Professor X and Lilandra both die and someone has the bright idea to hatch a child from an egg made out of their combined genetic material, Gladiator's first response is, oh, thank God you're here! YOU'RE the empress now! This is probably tied into the confidence-based nature of his powers, but even with all of his experience serving at the highest echelons of an interstellar empire that boasts over one million member states, he really seems allergic to the idea of being in charge of anything that's not in his comfort zone of the Praetorian Guard. (25:46) Break (34:32) Plugs for ODPH, Freudian Sips, and Cullen Bunn Treatment (36:07) In-universe - Get him out of his element Out of universe - Compare to high-level athlete with the yips (39:14) Skit (48:31) Hello Kallark, I'm Dr. Issues. -Thank you for taking the time to see me, doctor.  So, what can I do for you? -Forgive me my manners, but, we should at least shake hands before discussing more…personal items. Ok, sure -*yell*Ow! You have quite the grip for a human. Said…no one ever. Are you ok? I wasn't even trying to -*abruptly* I'm fine. Everythings fine. Not everything, but my hand is fine. *whispering to himself* Have I truly fallen so far? What was that? -Nothing. I…I need to see you because I have some questions that only a man of mental science can answer. Mental sci…that's unique. Anyhoo, go ahead. -Even though I am eons old, I pride myself on my…stamina. *hushed tone* do you understand what I'm saying? This is embarrassing. Well, you might need a different specialist, then. Do you have a primary care provider? -The Shi'ar Empire has spared no expense to test me from crown to sole, and yet, they find nothing…but…I haven't given them all of my…details. Go on…*sigh* look, I'm a professional. This is all confidential. If this goes where I think it's going, I may have ways to assist you. Continue -*deep breath* I am a proud member of the Imperial Guard. The proudest…member…if you will. I train my body constantly to serve in as many capacities as I can. And yet, I must admit…I may have cheated…oh the shame! I'm not casting judgment. You cheated with whom? -No, no, I do not blame anyone besides myself, by my own hand. Well, your hands may desensitize you if you aren't using variation in technique. -You do sound like you know about this topic quite well, and without hesitation. Alright then! I'll admit, I've resorted to using some natural remedies. Supplements if you will. Oh really? Well, on Earth many of those products do more harm than good. -I have learned the…umm..hard way…that this is true throughout the galaxy. Sure, for a brief time I felt like I could tackle a whole army and have my way with them in any test of…accomplishment. But that feeling faded. Now I feel…weaker than any Strontian has any right to feel. I may look the same, but I can tell I lack…girth. Is this making sense? Yes, and I definitely can help you. There is plenty of literature on my planet that shows some men have this type of adverse reaction to treatments for anxiety or depression. -Really? So they can't get up what they used to? I could lift planets out of their natural orbit, you know. Um…not the visual I would have wanted, but my point is, it's treatable. I don't know what the alien equivalent is, but here, it's called sildenafil. There are some options, and I want to go over the risks and benefits of - *interrupting* I have no fear of risks! Just tell me the benefits, please. Well, as you may have guessed, you'll be able to function in that area again. It increases blood flow, but the typical formulation is only used as needed to avoid staying that way permanently. -What? As needed? But I am always needed. The guard never ceases their duties. How am I supposed to maintain a steady workload if I rely on this temporary aide?  Well first you need to try a low-*interrupting* And what time of day do I take this…sildenafil? On the days you use it…and ONLY on that day, you can take it up to 4 hours before any stimulation, but it's best 30 minutes before -And what about my diet? Don't eat, you need an empty stomach, but you can drink water, it's good to stay hydrated, anyway. -And what if I need to increase my…output. How many of these can I take? Just one a day, but -And will this also affect my breathing if I am too vigorous? Actually, for pulmonary hyperten -And what about if I am injured? If this affects my blood, will I suffer mortal wounds easier?  I wouldn't recommend -Plus I don't…recover…as well as I used to. If I take anything else, will it affect those things as well? I thought you didn't care about side -How long do I take this, if I feel like my…body…is catching up to my…head? Sometimes I get a throbbing STOP! ***breathing heavily*** Look, stop with the innuendo, alright? You're talking about a sensitive topic, but you got through it. It's not easy to penetrate your defenses, but I've kept a stiff upper lip for too long. You're not going deep enough to get to the psychological basis of all of this. I can't last much longer. We need to start talking in plain language, or this whole encounter ends in a meaningless discharge. Do I make myself clear? -*shouts* SIR YES SIR! Good. Now, as I was trying to say before you unloaded all of your emotional content, erectile dysfunction is -*shocked* EXCUSE ME?!!! *pause* Come again? -WHAT are you on about? I've been pouring my soul out about my decline as a defender of the empire, and you want to talk about…sexual matters? What is wrong with you? I…I thought -You are a disgrace to your profession! And to think, I let myself believe that I needed your kind of help. I have tested the limits of EXISTENCE, and you have some sort of perverse motive to corrupt everything I stand for. How dare you! But the…and your cadence…your tone…the embarrass…*sigh* You know what? I'm willing to cut my losses. I apologize for the misunderstanding. I can refer you to another clinician, and we'll wipe the slate clean. Shake on it? -*pause* You drive a hard bargain. *crunching sound* OOOWWWW Where did that come from? -My grip…that's the grip I know that could choke out the Sun…YOU DID IT! I don't know how, but I'm back to…to ME? I can trust my…head…as well as my body…with my hands…I'm so excited I could just explode! Thank you! The Empire thanks you. Once a budding FBI profiler, she gave up her career to raise her four (soon to be five) children in West Windsor, New Jersey. But one day, between soccer games, recitals, and trips to the local pool, a very pregnant Andie pulls into a gas station--and stumbles across a murder scene. An attendant has been killed, and the bumbling local cops are in way over their heads. Suddenly, Andie is obsessed with the case, and back on the trail of a killer, this time with kids in tow. She soon crosses paths with disgraced local journalist Kenneth Lee, who also has everything to prove in solving the case. A string of unusual occurrences--and, eventually, body parts--surface around town, and Andie and Kenneth uncover simmering racial tensions and a decades-old conspiracy. Hilarious, insightful, and a killer whodunit, Suburban Dicks is the one-of-a-kind mystery that readers will not be able to stop talking about. The Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union is at its peak when the unthinkable happens: nuclear war. Sixty years later, the remaining 13 states rose from the ashes to form the American Union, governed by the authoritarian Joint Chiefs of Staff and protected by a border wall to keep out nuclear radiation . . . and the individuals who were enhanced by it. Nuclear Power is a darkly poignant alternate history of the Cuban Missile Crisis that posits the lengths to which a government will go to protect (or deceive) its citizens. When the Joint Chiefs' dark secrets are revealed, will survivors on both sides of the wall join forces to fight for their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, or will their differences forever divide them? We're at our traditional "penultimate chapter" issues of each of our Dawn of X launch titles... however, only one of the six seems to be playing along! Fallen Angels gets ready to wrap up by finally putting together their team (who we'll never see work together again after this series) - X-Men decides to ignore Fallen Angels completely by having X-23 fall back into her pre-FA character and costume... before the other series even ends -  Forge acts a chucklehead in X-Force - we resume our New Mutants space story (never thought I'd be so happy to see Deathbird!), your humble host becomes more accustomed to the new take on Bobby Drake, and Excalibur begins it's "Have I missed an issue?" meme! We're back for more classic X-Men! Watch and listen in as Tyler and Peter re-explore the classic Claremont material, with Fariha reading it FOR THE FIRST TIME! In this episode we discuss a Chris Claremont & Bill Mantlo fill-in issue on Uncanny X-Men (1963) #106 that doesn't give us too much to dig into other than which X-Man we'd prefer to date. That leaves us plenty of time to focus on two other Claremont comics of the same period. First, we visit Iron Fist (1975) #14, the penultimate chapter of his run on Iron Fist with John Byrne and the debut of Sabretooth! Then, we check out what Claremont is up to on Ms. Marvel (1977) #9-10, the debut of Deathbird! Our conversation includes some minor spoilers for House of X and Powers of X - especially for House of X #2, so you've been warned!

I never thought I'd be so happy to see Deathbird! Welcome back to Shi'ar Space, fellow NewMu's... it's time for one heck of a fun (farm-less) issue of New Mutants!  Join me as I talk all about how much I enjoy these characters... while at the same time, am growing a bit weary of the tricks of the current DoX landscape.  We've got nothin' happenin' bad guys, and a cliffhanger that threatens with some mutant deaths.  We're just a power-dampening collar away from the "hat trick"! He’s going to attempt writing in some steamy scenes even if it makes him blush. This month in Pop-Culture History1940 the radio show The Adventures of Superman first premiered1960 The Justice League first premiered in The Brave and the Bold #28, written by Gardner FoxWayne’s World premiered in theaters in 1992 and became the 8th highest-grossing film of the year, and is the highest-grossing film based off of a skit from SNL (Saturday Night Live)Geek Outs: The Book Club Edition!Trish's Geek Out!This month I read Dreadnought by April DanielsIt’s the story of a Trans girl who comes in contact with the hero Dreadnought in the moments of his death and she receives his powers. Her gender identity has been a secret until Dreadnought’s powers transform her into the ideal version of herself, and she suddenly has the body of a sixteen-year-old female. She is then faced with the responsibility of being a teenager with all the incredible powers of one of the worlds’ most famous heroes, along with the transmisogyny of her father, the unwanted advances of her best friend and discrimination from a terf in the city’s superhero team. This is an incredible coming of age superhero story with some of the usual tropes that don’t feel dusty or worn out. The scenes of discrimination and transmisogyny were hard to read at times because it was so real, you could tell that the author has been there. Ultimately, this is a story about living as your authentic self no matter what and finding fulfillment by doing so. And, it’s just a really good superhero story. I give it five out of five stars. Jeremy's Geek Out!This month I read X-Men: The End by Chris Claremont & Sean ChenThe End is Claremont’s farewell to the franchise and and characters he brought into the limelight. The X-Men have aged and we’re seeing their legacy play out. Bishop and Deathbird’s daughter liberates one of the most iconic characters, Jean Grey. The rise of the Phoenix (a story line originating in Claremont’s Phoenix Saga) forces the Shi’ar to unleash the War Skrulls, who attempt to exterminate the X-Men and nearly succeed. We watch beloved characters sacrifice themselves in moments of emotional heroism. Plot points from the Dark Phoenix Saga, Inferno, and the Mutant Massacre weave together beautifully to give us the closure Marvel denied its fans. It’s a brutal goodbye, while unfilled questions set up in the 80’s and 90’s are finally answered. Ultimately, if this were the final arc for the X-Men, it’d be tough, but I would say it couldn’t have unfolded any other way. I give it five out of five stars.Want to Join our Book & Comic Review for March:  Trish ReviewsBinti, by Nnedi Okorafor. This episode was recorded on the Saturday after the games at the venue. As a result sound quality isn't much and some people sound quiet due to proximity to the microphone.
