Issue 58 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with the Remakes Tribunal, where we put bad filmmaking on trial. In keeping with our Disaster Movie theme for this month, our remake on trial is the 2006 film Poseidon. Was there any justification for this CGI-laden update of the 1972 classic The Poseidon Adventure? Then we offer a Parole Board hearing for a film that didn't work the first time. Would a remake fix all the problems with Irwin Allen's 1980 clunker When Time Ran Out? Double Reel Monthly and Classics & Hidden Gems are already out for this issue, and we have a special Spotlight episode on David Fincher coming in a week's time.
Roll film! In Episode 23, DDSWTNP continue our White Noise residency by heading to the movies (or the TV screen) and examining Noah Baumbach's 2022 film adaptation of the novel. We discuss the drive over the years to adapt the supposedly “unadaptable” DeLillo for the screen, the 2020s context of this film, and our varied reactions to successive viewings of it over the two-plus years since its release. Other topics include the central performances (especially Adam Driver as an unexpectedly good Jack Gladney and Don Cheadle as a refashioned Murray Siskind); Baumbach's successes and failures at re-ordering DeLillo's dialogue and visually distilling certain themes; and his shaping of the narrative as a “meta-cinematic” journey through his personal film history and a mixture of genres. Reviews by Tom LeClair, Marco Roth, and Jesse Kavadlo figure in our analysis, and we close by considering whether we do in fact “need a new body” in the film's concluding supermarket song and dance number, which in our view captures some of the novel's themes and distorts others. We'd love to hear on Instagram or email what you think of the film and our reactions, too! We also take a little time to correct a historical error in our Episode 19 on Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake. Texts and sources for this episode: White Noise (dir. Noah Baumbach, 2022) (Netflix). This week we're talking about our favorite disaster movies! Oh no run the sky is falling or something!!
In this episode we discuss the lack of response to the trump shark image, the movies our high school teachers played in class that had nothing to do with the subject, our fellow Canadian Justin Chatwin, how Samue was totally right about ice, the archetype of "man who puts science above everything", whether those masks on planes are even real, the quintessential childhood Pompei phase, these people who keep doing their job when the world is ending, how our parents wouldn't come for us like DQuaid, the cozy library that sparked the lust for end of the world, the way the ice be creepin, how annoying the astronauts are and SO MUCH MORE!!!

In this episode of the TruVue Podcast, we dive into the chaotic sequel Twisters. Mother Nature is back on her bullsh*t, and this time, she's upped the ante with tornadoes that seem to have a vendetta against humanity. We bring the barbershop talk to the box office, chopping it up about the sheer destruction, the over-the-top action, and the questionable life choices of those brave (or foolish) enough to chase these violent vortexes. Whether you're here for the thrill or the laughs, we've got you covered. It's not about the review; it's the conversation with the crew. Grab your popcorn, take cover, and get ready for a whirlwind of spoilers, jokes, and our signature NSFW humor. In a world where the skies have no chill, find out if Twisters is a storm worth chasing or if it's just a hot mess in disguise. Disaster and survival movies don't have the best track record when it comes to their treatment of women. From who deserves to die, consumption of female bodies, to ice queens who, gasp, don't want kids, what are these movies saying about who deserves redemption and who deserves to die? We look into two examples - Jurassic World and Deep Blue Sea in this classic episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's been a long time since our theatres have been hit with a decently entertaining disaster film. Focusing more on the heroes that make the threat manageable or having a half-constructed story are typical tropes of most recent disaster films, but not Twisters. Combining sciences, plot, and a believable threat, The Nerds tackle one of this summer's box office thrills. Is it worth the watch? Alongside Comic Strips and some quick thoughts on The Boys season finale, this heavy hitter might just register as an E5 tornado. Like the intro music? Go check them out! Woke up to some rain this morning and might see some more tonight. Started the morning with news about the Vice President coming to Wisconsin today on the campaign trail, and Shaw shared a positive update on his personal life! We let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday and we also talked to Grant Bilse from the Wisco Sports Show. Packers QB Jordan Love isn't going to practice until he gets a new deal from the team, and former Packer, Davante Adams, is looking to get TB12 out of retirement to quarterback the Raiders! Riding on the instant success of "Twisters" hitting theaters, the Hollywood Reporter put out a list of the Top 11 Disaster Movies of all time. Great story about a K9 Officer in North Carolina that helped a nonverbal boy find his way home after he got lost. Have you seen these new vape pens that are also disposable, and also function as a phone & a fitness tracker? The Paris Olympics get started later this week and a diver from the UK is testing the "anti-sex" beds to make sure they'll be able to fornicate while in France. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about those pesky political texts, a woman who called 911 HUNDREDS of times, a dead hiker in Peru was discovered 22 years after being buried in an avalanche, a guy who got shot in the chest after drunkenly showing off his guns to his buddy, a Vegas escort who robbed a guy after having sex with him, a Karen that got upset about a missing chicken strip at a Jack-in-the-Box, a Southwest Airline flight that flew just 150 above the ground, an extreme eater who died while live-streaming, and a bride-to-be that had breast augmentation surgery right before her wedding…only to lose a nipple! On episode 242 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributors Josh Parham and Karen Peterson to give their thoughts on Twisters and discuss their favorite disaster movies. Before a big political announcement right before the recording of this episode, the news of the weekend was the success of Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters, which made over $80 million dollars, shattering expectations made by box office prognosticators. Though this is one victory for the film, the AW team's review of the film was rather mixed in their in-depth, layered conversation about the follow-up film to the original 1996 film. The team talked about the film as a whole, as well as the weak script, half-hearted attempts at connecting the original film to this new version, the chemistry between the film's leads, and the impressive visual effects that are on full display. We have a full review up on the site written by Erik, where he describes Twisters perfectly, as it is “more fizzle than sizzle.” In the back half of the episode, inspirited by Twisters and the fondness for Twister, the team had a fun discussion over some of their favorite disaster movies; films that cover some form of natural disaster, accidents, attacks or global catastrophes such as a pandemic. The films mentioned included The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Contagion, The Day After Tomorrow, Titanic, War of the Worlds, Sunshine, Jurassic Park, Dante's Peak, Armageddon Unstoppable, Airplane, Deep Impact, Volcano, Crawl, The Happening, The Perfect Storm, and more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h11m. We will be back next week to talk about the latest release, Deadpool & Wolverine, breakdown the lineup for the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and talk about their favorite films and performances of the year so far. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Nick welcomes music journalist Jim Ryan from Forbes & The Daily Herald to discuss some memorable concerts he's attended, like an annoying James Taylor with his bad jokes, and an incredible performance by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. They also talk about Jim's interviews with notable figures like Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead and Michael Richards from "Seinfeld." Plus, they share stories about Jim hanging out with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and bond over their mutual dislike for The Eagles. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to talk about some disaster movies she's caught up on, including "Leviathan," "Dante's Peak," "Deep Impact," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Nick warns Esma about the complete (but hilarious) idiocy of "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" and shares his thoughts on cicadas. They also wrap up their snack tour of Thailand with some tasty coconut chips. [EP254]

The boys talk news and then do a quick look back at the reason blockbuster movie season starts in May - 1996's Twister. Jeff gives a disclaimer about the real terror of tornados and the respect for things happening in real life. Josh talks about probably skipping Twisters in theaters this summer. We were able hop in the traffic chopper and escape the "suck zone," with our wonderful guest, actor/writer/voice over artist/mocap legend Sara Coates (Z Nation, Resident Evil 7 & 8). We observe the destruction and carnage left by "Twister," (1996 Dir. Jan de Bont) Starring: Bill Paxton (RIP), Helen Hunt, and Jami Gertz. Are tornados based on an indvidual mood; like "vibes?" Did the truly cool kids make up nicknames for themselves? What qualifies a phony do(u)c(k)tor? And boy, we sure picked the wrong movie, on the wrong day, with the wrong drinks, but we hung in through the storm!Plot: Two storm chasers on the brink of divorce must work together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.Recorded 4/232hr 4mins**All episodes contain explicit language**Artwork - Ben McFaddenReview Review Intro/Outro Theme - Jamie Henwood"What Are We Watching" Theme - Matthew Fosket"Fun Facts" Theme - Chris Olds/Paul RootLead-Ins Edited/Conceptualized by - Ben McFaddenProduced by - Ben McFadden & Paul RootConcept - Paul Root
