Woodstock Pt. 1: A Disaster Movie (Rewind)

Woodstock is remembered as the generation-defining moment when the baby boomers demonstrated to the world the power of peace, love and communalism. In reality, what went down at Old Man Yasgur’s farm in August 1969 involved extortion, deaths, countless overdoses, near-mass electrocution, and a state of emergency. Not to mention a restless crowd that doubled in size seemingly every time festival producer Micheal Lang lifted his head to survey the drug-addled chaos. All he wanted was a new kind of festival—a celebration of utopian hippie idealism. Instead, for three long, lawless days, Lang got much more than he bargained for during one of the messiest moments in American music history. The original Woodstock was a literal disaster, declared so on its first day by the state of New York. There were fights, onstage, armed black-shirted hippie gestapo on patrol, and most notably, two dead kids on record. The festival was born of violence, sparked into existence out of organizer Michael Lang’s standoff with hillbilly armed guards and cops from down in Florida. The lasting image of Woodstock as a time of idyllic harmony is a nostalgic gimmick, as is the 1970 documentary about the events that took place up in Bethel, New York that fateful weekend. If any director were to make a truly realistic movie about Woodstock, their film would be an unhinged disaster movie. This episode was originally published on November 16, 2021. Episode 153 of The Film '89 Podcast lands just in time for this year's July 4th celebrations, and there's no more fitting a film that the guys could be covering than one that honours that great American holiday. Joining Neil and Skye (who definitely aren't American) is returning co-host, filmmaker, producer and master cinephile (and importantly, an American), Mr Adam Rackoff. And the film they're discussing is an epic alien invasion film that takes its cues from ‘50s science-fiction, ‘70s disaster movies, and also one of the Film '89 Team's favourite pieces of event television, the early ‘80s miniseries, V. That film is Independence Day, which celebrates its 30th anniversary the day this episode drops. With a superb ensemble cast and featuring jaw-dropping special effects that still impress three decades on, Independence Day, on a relatively meagre budget considering its scope and scale, would go on to utterly dominate the global box office in 1996, becoming far and away the most financially successful film that year. It would also set a new benchmark for special effects in an era where CGI was yet to dominate, and still puts many modern-day, big-budget effects-heavy movies to shame. In many ways, Independence Day is the sort of film that cinema is made for, and along with Jurassic Park, represents one of the very best examples of big budget '90s summer blockbusters, influenced by their 1970s disaster themed forbears, and is a film that will be ingrained in the minds of anyone who was of a certain age in 1996, who'll never forget the cinematic phenomenon that was defined by those iconic images of colossal alien ships hovering over America.

HUNGRY director James Nunn knew he wanted to be a director from the time he first watch a realistic dinosaur stomp onto the big screen in JURASSIC PARK. And even before that, he was inspired by another Steven Spielberg classic, 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (the one where Indy teams up with his father, played by Sean Connery). A young James (named for James Bond, btw) borrowed his own dad's robe tie to swing from the bannisters at home. Decades later, a dozen films under his belt (like the ONE SHOT series, WILD CAT, SHARK BAIT, and now HUNGRY), he hasn't lost his love of storytelling, spectacle, and adventure.

Disaster movies are built to end things. Cities collapse, the planet cracks open, and whatever survives crawls out into the credits. Sequels are supremely rare because escalation usually feels beside the point. But “Greenland 2: Migration” exists because director Ric Roman Waugh never viewed the first film as a one-off thrill ride. For him, it was always the opening chapter of a single emotional story about family, survival, and legacy. The sequel again follows the Garrity family as they must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated, volatile wasteland of Europe in search of a new home. The film stars Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roman Griffin Davis, William Abadie, and more.On this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by director Ric Roman Waugh to discuss why “Migration” was never conceived as a traditional sequel, how emotion allows spectacle to breathe, reuniting with Gerard Butler for their fourth collaboration, and balancing franchise expectations with the fear of repetition.

Roll film! In Episode 23, DDSWTNP continue our White Noise residency by heading to the movies (or the TV screen) and examining Noah Baumbach's 2022 film adaptation of the novel. We discuss the drive over the years to adapt the supposedly “unadaptable” DeLillo for the screen, the 2020s context of this film, and our varied reactions to successive viewings of it over the two-plus years since its release. Other topics include the central performances (especially Adam Driver as an unexpectedly good Jack Gladney and Don Cheadle as a refashioned Murray Siskind); Baumbach's successes and failures at re-ordering DeLillo's dialogue and visually distilling certain themes; and his shaping of the narrative as a “meta-cinematic” journey through his personal film history and a mixture of genres. Reviews by Tom LeClair, Marco Roth, and Jesse Kavadlo figure in our analysis, and we close by considering whether we do in fact “need a new body” in the film's concluding supermarket song and dance number, which in our view captures some of the novel's themes and distorts others. We'd love to hear on Instagram or email what you think of the film and our reactions, too! We also take a little time to correct a historical error in our Episode 19 on Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake. Texts and sources for this episode: White Noise (dir. Nick welcomes music journalist Jim Ryan from Forbes & The Daily Herald to discuss some memorable concerts he's attended, like an annoying James Taylor with his bad jokes, and an incredible performance by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. They also talk about Jim's interviews with notable figures like Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead and Michael Richards from "Seinfeld." Plus, they share stories about Jim hanging out with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and bond over their mutual dislike for The Eagles. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to talk about some disaster movies she's caught up on, including "Leviathan," "Dante's Peak," "Deep Impact," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Nick warns Esma about the complete (but hilarious) idiocy of "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" and shares his thoughts on cicadas. They also wrap up their snack tour of Thailand with some tasty coconut chips. [EP254]

Jon Mooallem met with the director Noah Baumbach to discuss his latest film, an adaptation of Don DeLillo's 1985 novel “White Noise.”The pair explore the recent chain of personal and public events in Baumbach's life, including the toll of the coronavirus pandemic and the death of his father, and how this “routine trauma” has affected his work, and why it prompted him to create a discombobulated, “elevated reality” for his film in the vein of David Lynch, the Coen brothers and Spike Lee.This story was written and narrated by Jon Mooallem.
