Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Katie Anderson, Senior Director at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Katie leads efforts to drive climate action in the food and agriculture supply chain, making her an incredible resource on a topic we need to tackle urgently: methane emissions in agriculture.Methane, a potent but short-lived greenhouse gas, is responsible for a significant portion of agricultural emissions. Katie explains why addressing methane is not only crucial for curbing global warming but also an opportunity to improve resilience in the food system. We dive into the critical role of the dairy industry, which accounts for a significant share of methane emissions, and explore actionable solutions such as improved herd management, better manure management techniques, and innovative feed additives like Bovair.Katie also shares insights into the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, a coalition of major food and agriculture companies—including Nestlé, Danone, and General Mills—working together to measure, manage, and reduce methane emissions across their supply chains. We discuss how these companies collaborate to address barriers like financing and farmer engagement while sending a strong demand signal for low-emission practices.Key takeaways include the need for globally scalable, yet locally tailored, approaches to methane reduction and the critical importance of farmer-to-farmer learning. We also chat about exciting innovations like methane-reducing cattle feed and genetic advancements to breed lower-emission livestock. If you're curious about how cutting-edge solutions and collective action are shaping a more sustainable agricultural future, this episode is packed with valuable insights. For more, visit business.edf.org/DMAA or connect with Katie on LinkedIn.Support the showPodcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing supporters: Lorcan Sheehan Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Support the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. The supplement industry is another billion dollar market that's entwined in the wellness industry. Body builders, professional athletes, to the every day person probably uses supplements. It's even reported that half of the U.S. population is taking some type of supplement— see the end for sources. Supplements have their place, but are not a substitute for food. They're also not regulated by the FDA. This means supplements are not held to the same quality control standards as food and drugs. Matt Cahill, the founder of Craze pre-workout, is a prime example of taking advantage of a non-regulated market. You might have heard of the meth-like substance found in Craze pre-workout back in 2012, when athletes started failing drug tests and reports of liver damage where associated with the pre-workout. If not here's the story, and the stories of those impacted, along with my expert advice when it comes to navigating the supplement industry. References: Cohen PA, Travis JC, Venhuis BJ. The ALL ME® Podcast High Risk Supplements: The Death of a Soldier  – Leanne Sparling Most of us have walked into a vitamin store, health food store or even the local grocery and have walked the isle where Dietary Supplements are on the shelfs.   What most people don't realize is that the Dietary Supplement industry as a whole does have a lack of regulation.  As a result of this lack of regulation many people have gotten sick or have even died as a result of illegal drugs and banned substances found in these products. In this interview we talk with Leanne Sparling who like most Mom's out there didn't think that it was a big deal that her son had been using a product that he had purchased at a national dietary supplement chain.  In fact, she thought to herself, of course is has to be okay if my kid could walk into the store and purchase it over the counter. Leanne has a heartbreaking story that she is going to share in this podcast and it's a story about how her son Michael, who was just graduated from boot camp, had a heart attack as a result of a product he was taking.  She will share with us that her son was using a product manufactured by USP Labs, in Dallas, TX.  At the time this product was one of the hottest products on the market. Pronounced “Jacked” or “Jack 3D” Jacked had an ingredient in the product called DMAA (1,3-Dimethylamylamine) which according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is an amphetamine derivative that has been marketed in sports performance and weight loss products, many of which are sold as dietary supplements. DMAA is not a dietary ingredient, and DMAA-containing products marketed as dietary supplements are illegal and their marketing violates the law. For more information on DMAA please visit: Today, Leanne and her family continue to share Michael's tragic stories in hopes that no other family will have to go through what they went through.  Her advice to parents when it comes to dietary supplements is to do your research and take products that are 3rd Party Certified by NSF Certified for Sport.  You can find more information about them by visiting their website: Thank you for tuning in and using some of the resources below to help keep you and your family safe. The ALL ME® Podcast Contamination and Adulteration of Dietary Supplements – Dr. Pieter Cohen                    Do you really know what's in the dietary supplements you're taking? Would you be surprised if you found out that your multivitamin contained an anabolic steroid or if the pre-workout you were taking contained a banned amphetamine like compound? How concerned would you be if the product you were taking also contained the anti-depressant Lexapro? With over 50% of the US population taking dietary supplements, it's important to not only know what you're taking but most importantly understand if it's safe for consumption. In this podcast, I speak with Dr. Pieter Cohen whose work is dedicated to researching the dietary supplement adulteration industry. We'll discuss the FDA and their lack of regulation along with what they can do to improve policing the industry, what dietary supplement adulteration is and what type of harmful ingredients that are being found in dietary supplements that are not tested. The ALL ME® Podcast Operation Supplement Safety - Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey Dietary Supplements are products we have likely all encountered at some point in our lives. It is an industry with over 50,000 different types of products and one that has surpassed over $40 billion dollars in revenue. It is also an industry with some regulation issues and therefore brings about some inherent health risks to using these products. Knowing that risk exists, it is important to make informed decisions when purchasing and taking any dietary supplements. In this episode, we will talk Dr. Patty Duester and Andrea Lindsey from Operation Supplement Safety (OSS), a group that is helping others make those informed decisions.   While OSS has resources available for all, their specific focus is on dietary supplement use within the Department of Defense. In January 2012, the Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs requested a DoD-wide educational campaign on dietary supplements. In response to this request, the DoD Dietary Supplement Subcommittee (DSSC), the U.S. Army Public Health Command, and the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) began developing a DoD-wide educational campaign—Operation Supplement Safety, or OPSS—to increase awareness within the DoD community about potential health risks and how to choose safe dietary supplements. OPSS's mission is to provide the best evidence-based information about dietary supplements to Military Service Members, their families, healthcare providers, and leaders to achieve human performance optimization. Since many Military Service Members use dietary supplements-for promoting health, improving performance, bodybuilding, losing weight, and more-their goal is to provide the tools and resources to help users make informed decisions about dietary supplements to reduce the potential risks to their health and careers.   The fear of cannibalizing sales of existing products is often cited as a reason why established firms delay the introduction of [better approaches]. ―Clayton M. Christensen, The Innovator’s Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail   I want to talk about the wellness industry today. In the parlance of the famous (or infamous, depending on where your revenue is coming from) Al Lewis, traditional “to employee” types of wellness programs are health care done to employees, not for employees. They’re like forced health care. Generally, these programs tout cost savings to the employer. And also generally, these programs aren’t optional; they may include sticks as well as carrots and sometimes sticks that are dressed up as carrots but are actually still sticks. The wellness industry is big business—like, regulated by the SEC big in some cases. That’s why this Clay Christensen quote is so apropos. Despite the fact that your average wellness program is often, let’s just say, heartily suboptimal from a cost, quality, and satisfaction standpoint, most employers continue to basically force employees into them. Many brokers continue to offer these ineffective programs as well. I mean, why wouldn’t they? Everybody in the supply chain is making money. Besides, it’s time consuming and maybe even risky to try to re-educate an employer organization who might not know any better. It’s one of those great examples where doing the right thing isn’t as profitable or safe as exploiting outdated thinking as long as the market will bear. Employers are getting wise to a lot of things right now. I’d suggest a fast follow-on is going to be their view of these wellness programs. It will be interesting to see if current vendors are able to compete with the newer solutions that actually work and which employees actually appreciate. It will also be interesting to see if there’s any backlash against the supply chain that continues to offer up these solutions, especially given some of the lawsuits that are currently under way and all the research which is eminently available. After about ten people wrote in looking to hear an interview with him, in this health care podcast I’m honored and pleased to speak with the one and only Al Lewis. Al is basically synonymous with wellness programs’ analysis and evaluation. One of my favorite things about Al is that he is as controversial as he is respected. He’s been called both “the founding father” of disease management, and he’s also been called the “troublemaker-in-chief” of the wellness industry. Regardless of your opinion of Al’s views, his integrity and commitment and rigorous analytical approach is open and shut. Al is the author of two books, which you can find in the show notes. He’s also the CEO of Quizzify. Quizzify is a company and an approach that teaches employees how to get the care they need while avoiding the “care” they don’t. Quizzify’s claims have been validated, by the way, by the Validation Institute.   You can learn more at quizzify.com.   Al Lewis wears multiple professional hats. As an author, his critically acclaimed category-best-selling book on outcomes measurement, Why Nobody Believes the Numbers, chronicling and exposing the innumeracy of the health management field, was named 2012 health care book of the year in Forbes. Cracking Health Costs: How to Cut Your Company’s Health Costs and Provide Employees Better Care, released in 2013, was also a trade bestseller. His 2014 book Surviving Workplace Wellness has also received great accolades, and excerpts appeared in Harvard Business Review and elsewhere. As a consultant, he is widely acclaimed for his expertise in population health and wellness outcomes and strategy. In 2013 he was named one of the unsung heroes changing health care forever. As a validator of outcomes, he has been able to obtain Gold Standard certification for many of his clients and Quizzify from Intel’s Validation Institute. He is also one of the population health field’s most acclaimed speakers, as well as a prolific author and interviewee on outcomes economics. In recent years, Al cofounded Quizzify, an online education program that delivers health literacy information to participants in a fun, game show contest format. Its mission is to create health-literate employees. Quizzify is a solution; to create a culture of health and wellness, organizations must promote health and health care education. It delivers engaging, educational content developed and reviewed by industry professionals and gives managers administrative tools to customize quizzes and effectively measure employees’ learning. Quizzify uses humorous, trivia-style quizzes (reviewed by doctors at Harvard Medical School) to simplify complex topics and help employees stay engaged. Its mission is to help employees, without putting them at risk. Al was also the founder of the Population Health Alliance (formerly DMAA). Over 80% of his clients have won national awards for their wellness/disease management programs. Before entering the population health field, he was a partner at Bain & Company. He holds two degrees from Harvard, where he also taught economics; and his economic policy book was made into a show on the Washington, DC, NPR affiliate. 03:40 Examples of things that are done for employees that have no issues. 04:58 Looking at the fact that medical care isn’t harmless. 06:00 The Yale program as an example of doing health care “to” employees. 08:55 The downside of just coaching. 10:05 Zeev Neuwirth’s book and the difference between being a patient and consumer.11:58 Why employers still offer forced wellness programs to their employees. 16:50 Making the clinical aspect of wellness programs voluntary with Quizzify. 17:38 The need to reduce screenings from every year to every few years. 20:25 Population health management. 21:04 Employers vs insurers—wellness vendors vs population health vendors. 22:33 Diagnosis, overdiagnosis, and hyper-diagnosis. 28:23 The difference between a screen and a test/overdiagnosis and hyper-diagnosis. 31:40 “If you have heartburn and you’re taking a proton pump inhibitor … and you play our quiz … you’ll learn that these pills … are not supposed to be taken for the long term. … Now that you know that, you switch to [Pepcid] or Tums; it’s that simple.” You can learn more at quizzify.com.
