“There is no curable disease in the universe which has cannot be effectively cured by śilājatu, [but only] when administered at the appropriate time, in combination with suitable herbs and by adopting the prescribed protocol”.~ Caraka Samhitā, authoritative classical Ayurveda textI'm Dylan Smith, an Ayurveda practitioner and educator, and in case you have not heard of Shilajit, it is one of Ayurveda's most revered herbal substances. This potent, mineral-rich resin sourced from rocky mountains is rapidly gaining popularity in Western supplement markets for its purported energising and rejuvenating effects. In this episode, we aim to disrupt the growing fad of shilajit as a dietary supplement in wellness communities. We'll challenge the notion that shilajit—prized in Ayurveda for its potent healing properties—can be casually consumed. Much of what's sold is adulterated or harvested improperly, and often lacks proper purification. We'll explore essential Ayurvedic principles like correct dosage, the right vehicle (anupāna), and a tailored diet (pathya) to balance shilajit's intense qualities and ensure safety and efficacy. When these elements are neglected, shilajit's benefits can be lost—or even become harmful—underscoring the need for proper guidance in its use.My guests include Dr. Sumit Kesarkar, who has spent over two decades harvesting shilajit indigenously across Asia, and the renowned Raju family of Ayurvedic doctors: Vaidya J.R. Raju, Vaidya Pavani Raju, and Vaidya Harsha Raju. Together, we'll offer practical insights on sourcing authenticity, safe usage, and time-tested ways to honour shilajit's role as a powerful rasayana.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:

Poison friends! Today's episode is all about food adulteration (drinks and some medicine/supplements as well) that was taking place in the 1800s-early 1900s (even some more recent scandals). My biggest source for this episode was Deborah Blum's The Poison Squad, which I highly recommend (her other book, The Poisoner's Handbook is also great). It follows scientists (namely one, Dr. Harvey Wiley) and their allies in the fight to protect consumers from food processors and corporations who were more concerned with saving money than protecting the people they sold to. We will discuss the toxic preservatives, disgusting additives, and fakes that were once allowed as a part of our food supply as well as how it effected the people who consumed them. We will also discuss important legislation and how long and difficult that road was. Hold on to your stomachs, folk...things might get gross. Also, trigger warning for animal cruelty discussed in one part...basically the treatment of livestock during this time. Thanks so much for listening and learning with us! Lead Story:   Xylazine Adulteration of the Heroin–Fentanyl Drug Supply Annals of Internal Medicine Since 2016, xylazine has appeared in the illicitly manufactured fentanyl supply and has increased in prevalence, due to its low cost, easy availability, and presumed synergistic psychoactive effect. It remains unclear whether a distinct xylazine withdrawal syndrome occurs. Xylazine may alter the findings and management of patients with fentanyl overdose and withdrawal. Inadequately treated opioid (and possibly xylazine) withdrawal contributes to the increase in self-directed discharges from treatment settings. Initiation of buprenorphine and perhaps methadone may be compounded by the concomitant use of xylazine. The presence of extensive wounds in people who use xylazine prevents them from accessing resources, including medically managed withdrawal treatment, leading to a cycle of continued and escalating use.   Read this issue of the ASAM Weekly Subscribe to the ASAM Weekly Visit ASAM

Welcome to Episode 17 of Optimal - the Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Weatherby and Beth Ellen DiLuglio are joined by Dr. Uma Naidoo to discuss her ground-breaking work in Nutritional Psychiatry. Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and nutrition expert, has been at the forefront of this field and has written a book called "This Is Your Brain on Food," which explores the relationship between food and mental health. Listen in as Dr. Naidoo introduces the practice of nutritional psychiatry, which involves educating patients about the importance of a balanced diet and how certain food can affect mood, cognition, and behavior. One nutrient that Dr. Naidoo highlights as particularly important for mental health is folate because an adequate folate intake has been associated with a lower risk of depression and other mental health conditions. They also discuss the issue of adulteration of our food, with many products containing additives and preservatives that can negatively affect our health. For patients in lower socioeconomic groups, Dr. Naidoo recommends making healthy food more accessible and affordable, such as shopping at farmers' markets or using food co-ops. Dr. Naidoo also discusses the importance of "brain food" for children, including omega-3 fatty acids, choline, and zinc. She also shares a method of food preparation that some parents use to make vegetables more palatable for picky eaters, which is beneficial because it can increase vegetable consumption and improve their children's nutrition. It is also essential to encourage children to eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods that can support their overall health and well-being, including their mental health. The take-home message? Consider incorporating more whole, nutrient-dense foods into your diet to improve your mental health and well-being. Listen to this episode and learn more! We take a deeper dive into regulations across the world when it comes to the misrepresentation of food and how that plays into the global supply chain. We also address issues pertaining to consumer trust and how Mars is working with its partners for more consistent harmonization as well as the technologies that are available to detect fraudulent foods. We cap things off talking about the Mars Global Food Safety Center and as well as whether better detection methods or more regulations are more important when it comes to food fraud.  Enjoy the episode.  Read the transcript of this episode on the Food Processing website

How did corn syrup get such a bad reputation? While there are certainly differences between this corn-based sweetener and the sugar that comes from beets & cane, the opinions many of us hold about what separates them are rooted in much more than the scant scientific evidence on their differing impact on human health. In this episode, Benjamin Cohen joins us to talk about the history behind the corn syrup controversy, the deep roots that lie beneath our understandings of food and purity, and how understanding this story might help us make better decision moving forward.   Dr. Benjamin R. In this week's episode, we're talking about SPI's...or as you might recognize them, soy protein isolate. There are many alternatives to animal proteins, but it seems (after diving deep into a rabbit hole of research, videos, studies, science and many other tangents) that these alternatives, including by not limited to soy, have a "dark" side that impacts our health, environment and wallet...yaddah, yaddah...you know how it goes. This shouldn't be a surprise, but what is eye opening is the way soy protein isolate is made and how we came to use it as food in the first place. We'll get into that as well as some interesting history...and if you're thinking..."well, I use organic protein powder, so no big deal..." let me just say....think again! Thanks for listening in and sharing this episode with someone you love. See you on the other side of the plate. Chow.

How concerned would you be if the product you were taking also contained the anti-depressant Lexapro? Understanding Betrayal - Rape, Childhood Sexual Violence, and Incest 2020 BLACK PODCASTI

Greetings, this is the 2nd episode addressing Soul Wounds, discussing the slow systemic racism against children of color and how it impacts the healthcare or lack of, the child, it's family, it's community, and future generations.  This podcast is discussing the health consequences and potential interventions to address  unresolved childhood sexual trauma  - prenatal  to age 10 and from ages 11-18Why began at prenatal, far too many babies are born with limited prenatal care, they suffer from low birthweight, suffer from Fetal Alcohol Symptoms, or born substance dependent on the drugs their mother consumed while pregnant.  If their parents can afford insurance this county's health care disparities are now event to the world to see as more black, brown, and Native Americans are dying of COVID-19.  To put it politely, at birth they are behind the eight bill and will take years, if ever, to recover.  This will impact their ability to learn, attend school, and have the ability to just be a kidFar too often, mandatory reporter and others in authority perceive children of color and marginalized children as young as 5 years old as harden, not needing nurturing, and over sexualized.  This is a failure on their part of not understanding, children like myself, we learn early, some by age of 3, crying is not going to bring someone. To hug and wipe away our tears  and we learn to deal with pain and sadly we know we are alone, that no adult is going to save us.Let's never forget two mind numbing statistics - the average of  young black and brown girls forced into human trafficking is 12 years old, a 6th grader; and 3.3 million women ages 18-44 in the US reported their first sexual experience was by some form of rape - the average age of the girls was 15, a freshman or sophomore in high school, and the man was 27.  3.3 million is larger than total population of Chicago and at least 12% will become suicidal and 75-80% will develop some form of PTSD.The 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner, Junior Diaz, write in a April 9, 2018 essay The Silence: The Legacy of Childhood Trauma, published in the Nee Yorker the impressive first person account of what we experienced prior to and post being raped as a child and how it impacts every part of your life for years.  We spend more of lives hiding from the shame of being raped than learning how to live and enjoy lifeI hope you continue to enjoy this seriesBe safe and remain healthy Theresa

Adulteration of botanicals has been going a fact of human commerce since time immemorial. Only very recently has the game taken a turn for the technical as criminals and unsuspecting buyers use ever-more sophisticated tools—and schemes—to stay ahead of each other. In response, the American Botanical Council has co-created a Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program, a free series of bulletins to help buyers, brands and contract manufacturers learn which ingredients are being targeted, and the means why which adulterers are using to fool tests. Natural Products Insider’s senior editor Todd Runestad sat down with ABC’s founder, Mark Blumenthal, to discuss the risks at stake. Tune in to discover: - How saw palmetto is being spiked with help from the animal slaughter trade. - What manufacturers can do to prevent rejected raw materials from re-entering the trade. - Whether blockchain can be a viable tool to ensure trustworthiness in the trade. In this episode, Bob & Ben speak with Lafayette College's Benjamin Cohen about the pure food crusades of the late nineteenth century, the origins of the Pure Food Act of 1906 and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the lessons this era offers us as we seek to make decisions about food policy in the 21st century. Dr. Benjamin R. Cohen is Associate Professor of Engineering Studies and Environmental Studies at Lafayette College and the author of Pure Adulteration: Cheating on Nature in the Age of Manufactured Food (University of Chicago Press, 2019). A 50-year-old worker at J & A Grinding has confessed to lacing a coworker's drink with a cleaning liquid.Curtis Malloy was an employee at the industrial tool plant in Delaware when he confessed to adding Pine-Sol to a coworker’s beverage after a nine-month long investigation. He told the authorities that the female coworker had teased him, so he spiked her drink and now he's facing a felony.According to a report from the Delaware News Journal, Malloy’s coworker alerted police after her beverage smelled like Pine-Sol in April 2019. She believed that Malloy had been tainting her drinks for a while. According to court documents, the police sent a sample to the crime lab which found isopropyl alcohol, a chemical found in Pine-Sol. In security footage, Malloy was seen at the woman's desk during suspicious times, and in an interview with detectives, he admitted pouring Pine-Sol into his co-workers drink. Malloy has since quit J&A, and faces charges of one count of adulteration. Adulteration is typically a Class G felony punishable by up to two years in prison unless it is proven that Malloy caused the coworker physical injury or illness.Unfortunately, this isn't the first time that we've seen a case of workers poisoning coworkers. In March 2019, a 56-year-old employee at ARI Armaturen in Germany received life in prison for sprinkling mercury and cadmium on sandwiches in the break room. And in April, a 32-year-old engineer at Berkeley Engineering and Research in California was arrested for attempted murder for putting cadmium in a coworkers water bottle. According to its website, J & A Grinding, based in Newark, Delaware, specializes in industrial tool sharpening and grinding. We reached out to J & A, but as of presstime the company has not responded to our request for comment.

Why are bess disappearing? What contributes to "colony collapse disorder?" Do we need bess to survive as a human race? And what about honey? Why is it so hard to find the real deal? And are we consuming more than we should? Beekeeper and teacher Leo Sharashkin answers these questions and more. Leo learned beekeeping from his uncle in his native Russia. Today, among other things, Leo offers his theory on why we have a dying bee population. He describes what wild beekeeping looks like. And he addresses the question of honey adulteration (why not all honey on the shelves is true honey).  By the end of the conversation you'll gain insights on bees, honey, and how Leo lives out the theme of the book he edited "Keeping Bees with a Smile."  For more from Leo, visit his website: horizontalhive.com. By way of WhatsApp, we were able to get the details at once, and forwarded it to the Tamil Nadu Amma Call Centre 1100, which in turn was forwarded to the Aavin headquarters.
