The second part of this topic starts right back up where the last episode ended, where Tina gets into her cord stoppers and Jess discusses their needle wranglers that are great for double pointed needles (DPNs). Meg and Jess amaze Tina and Drea with the idea of using a pocket pharmacy for stitch markers, and the cast talk about how their preferences may or may not have changed in terms of needles and hooks. This turns into an ergonomics discussion regarding tools. Big box stores seem to only provide the most random needle and hook sizes, especially those massive ones no one seems to use. Drea confesses about her pile of a certain size of needles. Lots of great information in this episode available! None of the products mentioned are sponsoring our podcast in any capacity; we recommend these products personally. Find out more about this episode and the cast at pardonmystash.com.

Today is December 27, 2022. This is the last show of the year. I am working on my Picking Berries socks aka my blueberry socks. The pattern for the berries I knitted into the socks is as follows. This is for the pattern of the berry only. You can repeat or change it however you want but I wanted to make sure you got an idea of what I was doing for the cuff. This is expected you have 18 stitches on each of your DPNs if you have less you can remove a knit stitch from either end to accomodate for less stitches. If you have more, just add knit stitches evenly across the front and end of the pattern for each row to accommodate. Blueberry Pattern K4P2K6P2K4 K3P4K4P4K3 K3P4K4P4K3 K4P2K6P2K4 Kit two rows K8P2K8 K7P4K7 K7P4K7 K8P2K8 Knit two rows K4P2K6P2K4 K3P4K4P4K3 K3P4K4P4K3 K4P2K6P2K4 Kit two rows I am still trying to find a yarn of nylon, acrylic, wool blend for the socks. I talk about the socks I am working on and planning on finishing until I find the yarn I need for my homeless kits. I might start working on my second homeless kit although I have no sock yarn and at least get the hats and scarves done after I finish my picking berries socks. I really appreciate you taking time to listen to the podcast and I look forward to chatting with you next year. I am looking for an Eastern Orthodox Saint who knitted. I am still searching for that, if you know of them please let me know. I am available to knit socks if you would like me to. I also can test out yarns for socks. Just reach out for either of these and lets get talking. If you have thoughts or suggestions to make this show more valuable to you please feel free to reach out on my social media links below. Today we're going back to basics! First up, Stacey and Hannah share some insights into knitting needles. The most essential knitting tool, no matter your technique, pattern or yarn, choosing the right needles for each project is the very first step and can make a huge difference in your journey. Whether you're dedicated to DPNs or curious about Interchangeable Needles, Stacey and Hannah cover the basics of needle selection. Next, Gerda and Lee dig deep into the intricacies of knitting cables. One of the most impressive techniques, cables offer heaps of visual interest once you learn a few simple steps. They even describe how to cable without a cable needle and demystify some of the ways people use the word "cable" within knitting. Lastly, the Knit Picks Podcast has a brand new voicemail for you to call in with questions or comments. We'll be checking it regularly and using your calls in later episodes as part of our Q&A segments. To leave a voicemail call 360-334-4847 and record your message, we'd love to hear from you. Fiber at the Speed of Life Podcast

Finished Objects Erica has a mostly finished and a totally finished object she shares on this episode. Erica plied one of the advent calendar yarns over the holiday break. While travelling in Helsinki, Erica twisted the fringe on her handspun scarf and wet finished it when she returned home. This scarf contains many of her color management study. Michelle finished separating and carding a Jacob fleece. She didn't think it would be that difficult to separate, but it turns out that the divide between the white and brown isn't distinct. She ended up with three colors, but for now is planning to spin the brown and white separately and then ply them to get a barber pole yarn. Works in Progress Erica is has made fairly good progress on both socks. Though the socks for TJ had one heel that ended up with twice as many stitches as the other. She is going to try doubling the decreases on the bigger heel and see how that goes. These socks are being knit from Gynx Yarns Merino Worsted First Bloom yarn. Unfortunately, Gynx Yarns is no longer dyeing and selling yarn. Erica has used several BluPrint classes to learn to knit these socks. Erica has used both My First Socks and Knit Socks Two at a Time! When we discuss the oddities with these socks, we discuss some of the differences with the Portuguese style knitting. Erica learned this style, which finally clicked for her, also on BluPrint.   The other set of socks will probably be for Oli, Erica's husband when finished. She is very close to finishing the second main sock, then each sock just needs the afterthought heel. These socks are being knit from Gynx Yarns Fingering weight yarn, mostly on DPN's. Erica is knitting these toe-up, one at a time. She has tried using DPNS, magic loop and two circular needles. ?Thus far dpn's seems to be the fastest method. As she's just starting sock knitting there are a lot of explorations to go! Erica has learned to knit these socks from My First Toe Up Socks class on BluPrint.   Erica did some more spinning on her Advent Fiber Calendar of the breaks. She is also planning to ply these yarns with semisolids in the sane/similar hue families. So she has started spinning this Polwarth/Mohair/Silk semisolid yarn for plying the yarns that are in the red hue family. Erica has finished one of the two motifs she is weaving on this first piece of Damask! She is weaving two motifs and some extra to send to a friend who will bead it and make it into a 7th C Persian headdress! Erica hopes listeners enjoy hearing about this project because there are at least 7 more meters to go to be woven into cloth for a robe and a Sasanian cowl! Erica also talks about identifying her mystery yarn from this summer! This is Finn dyed by Crafty Jaks for a Wool N Spinning Breed Study. Erica ordered a "reading buddy pillow" it's more like a lounger buddy pillow! :) Erica's sunroom is still in the progress of being set up. Here is a photo as it is right now! There will eventually be one couch in the sunroom. :) These photos were taken about 11, so you can see in January how much sunlight comes in before midday to the sunroom. We did leave one corner (photo below taken from this corner) without windows, to allow for a space to store things that should not be kept in direct sunlight. Michelle is also working on her crafting space, but she's pretty sure this will be a work in progress for many years as she continues to tweak it. She did recently get rid of a bench she had in there, that had been there when she moved into the house. Removing it was an adventure, but it wasn't a good crafting space because drawers made it difficult to sit at. It was also very big. She has replaced it with a table that she can sit at to craft, so now she has a "messy craft" (resin, clay, paint) work space and a fiber/clean craft work space. She's still working on organizing shelves and work spaces, but she feels like this is a huge step. The bookshelf on the right is between her crafting spaces and will be used for supplies. The one on the left will actually be used for books. As part of her craft room progress, Michelle has decided to send all of her camelid (alpaca, llama) fibers to the mill for processing. She currently has a large table set up in the middle of her craft room to get these skirted now so she doesn't have to do it in a rush later to get the fiber to the people from the mill when they're in town. The skirting does put a halt to the organizing of the craft room because she can't get around the table, but she figures getting it skirted to get it out of the room counts as organizing.   This may be the first llama fleece that Michelle has skirted. It is so soft that she just wants to lay in it. It seems a shame to have it spun into yarn at the mill, but she realizes that she's not likely to process it any time soon, so it needs to go. The fleece is darker than it looks in the picture.   While in Joann Fabrics, Michelle found some simple metal rings that she thought could be the beginning of needle felted wreaths. She's decided to turn the one into a winter scene. The bottom is thicker than the top to allow for animals to be on it. So far it has a Narwhal. She's working on a polar bear, but is suffering from "I don't know how to make a polar bear", so progress is slow. Michelle has started a wheel throwing class. She's had a couple classes and some open studio time and can finally make a decent cylinder with even (ish) walls. The project that she's currently most proud of though is a little cup where she did some experimenting with belling out the sides to resemble some pottery cups we have from our reenacting days. The upper edge ended up uneven, so she turned the thicker part of the rim into a spout and now it's a cream/milk pitcher.

It's time to celebrate our favorite seasonless knit, SOCKS! The perfect portable project, we always have a pair on our needles between larger projects. There's really nothing better than a pair of handknit socks for gifting OR wearing. This week we dive into our new Simply Socks pattern collection. After years printing collections of wild socks with fabulously complicated colors and stitch patterns, we've put together a collection of basic, everyday patterns that we all secretly (or not so secretly) really WANT to wear. Perfect for gifting to anyone in your life (hello fellas!) or filling your own sock drawer, we promise these new patterns will have you casting on your next pair ASAP. Stacey and Hannah get serious with our second Q+A session all about, you guessed it, SOCKS! Listen in as they weigh the pros and cons of DPNs vs Magic Loop, and share advice on how to make sure you get the perfect fit every time. We'll be doing Q+A segments regularly so keep those comments coming! As always, happy listening and happy crafting!

005: Tension Released March 26, 2019 In this episode, Anne talks about her tension issues with the third swatch of the Master Hand Knitter Program, plus a correction, music to knit by, projects she's been working on, a charity knitting opportunity, and the first giveaway of the podcast! A Correction In the last episode, Anne planned to knit the ribbing for swatch 2 of the Master Hand Knitting Program in smaller needles, but a listener pointed out that the instructions spell out that you should use the same needles. So, thank you to Julie for saving Anne from having to reknit the swatch! Progress on Swatch 3 Swatch three is a seed-stitch swatch, but without proper, consistent tension, gaps appear at the transition from purl to knit. After many attempts resulting in slow improvement, Anne has decided to stop knitting the swatch and, instead, will be knitting a seed stitch scarf, which should give her plenty of practice without ruining the yarn she needs for her MHK swatches! On and Off the Needles Anne has a lot on the needles right now, including her second attempt at Sencilla, by Shireen Nadir; Nejiri, by Yumiko Sakurai; and the Bonte Mitts, by Joyce Riemens. Listen to the episode to hear how they are progressing! The only project Anne finished since the last podcast was a modified version of the Juniper Cowl, available on the Berroco Website. For information on how she altered the pattern from a standard cowl to one that warms her shoulders as well, you'll have to listen to the podcast! The Big Knit UK While there's been little progress on "real" projects, Anne has been busy participating in The Big Knit by knitting 5 mini hats a day from March 15 to April 6. (So far, so good, as of the day this episode launches!) These tiny hats are a great way to turn scrap yarn into funding for Age UK. American knitters: if you would like to contribute to the cause, Anne is leaving April 2, 2019 for the UK and is happy to take your hats along, but you have to act fast to get the hats to herby April 1!! Send her an email at anne @ familypodcasts . com to get the mailing address when you're ready. Any American knitters who mails her 10 hats by April 1 will be thanked with a set of stitchmarkers from the inventory that remains from her former business. (While supplies last.) Knitters in the UK have until July to submit their mini hats through their local Age UK. Additionally, many knitting stores are acting as collection points. Anne will be taking her hats, and any she receives from listeners, to donate at Wool in Bath. It's a chatty and fun episode today with the enigmatic Leona Jayne Page of Rusty Ferret/Fluph. Voted back onto the show as a guest for the second time, Leona tells us about how she moved from yarn shop owner into hand dyer. Rusty Ferret was, when we last met Leona, in the closet as a 'local dyer'. Well, the worst kept secret in knitting was uncovered and Leona was revealed as the dyer behind Rusty Ferret. Rusty is a steampunk gentleman and Leona draws upon all kinds of things for inspiration. We cover a number of topics in this episode including commercial yarns, DPNs vs magic loop and the economics of Primark clothing. Ever fancied getting into Art School? Leona has the scoop on that. You can find everything about Leona at www.fluph.co.uk Full show notes are at www.shinybees.com/120 Music for this episode is used with kind permission of Adam and the Walter Boys, with 'I Need a Drink', available via iTunes.

Episode 37: Production scheduling Production What’s in My Teapot Materials Sourcing After 5 Production Gnome Socks by Spilly Jane Camp KIP Theme Using the recommended Brown Sheep Nature spun. Tried to use Knitpicks “palette” but couldn't find colors I liked. Tension is a bit wonky. I think it's mostly because I'm concerned about the floats getting to tight across the back. Through the hats and faces of the first row of gnomes. Getting ready to cast on the white for beards and then the next row is the start of the oh so scary three color rows! The Bee Keeper’s Quilt by Tiny Owl knits Hexipuffs! I tried to avoid it I even found the vlog post mildly annoying and yet I bought the pattern and am happily hexipuffing away. My puffs are a bit smaller than what the pattern is calling for as I'm knitting mine on two sz one circular needles. I found the method in the pattern of knitting them on DPNs a bit hard on my hands . I have 7 out of the 345 some odd puffs that I'll need. Woohoo! Gonna be a long ride! The Brea Bag My Brea Bag came back out of the prjectbag thid week. I tore out the previously made gussett anf reknit it stranding with a new hank of Alpaca Ultra. (I had previously rant out. I'. not happy with the tension at the very end of the gussett. The beginning is knit much more tightly than the end. I'll be tearing this back AGAIN this week and hopefull be able to put it together and have it finished and ready for use! What's In my Tea Pot Republic of Tea Hot Apple Cider Tea A naturally-caffeine free blend of apples, cinnamon cloves and ginger. Reminiscent of apple cider, with the luscious aroma of cinnamon and cloves, make this cup the perfect accompaniment to the colors of the harvest season. This is no replacement for the mulled cider recipe I shared in Episode 26 “Double Bubble or Mulling it over” but in a pinch if there is no way to get the real deal... it's better than nothing. Has a tendency to go bitter when over steeped. I think it's the ginger and clove that get a bit to aggressive if you forget the bag in the bottom of the mug. Materials Sourcing The Merino Camel is done! Plied and washed. I've never seen so much dirt come out of yarn! Humphrey must have been filthy. The dirt was coming off in clouds! The end result is really soft with a bit o a tweed look. All in all I'm happy with the finished product. I’m still looking for that elusive consistent single but that will come with time. I came up with abut 250 yds of yarn so I'll be looking for a small project to use it on Back on the wheel currently is the 4 oz of Jacob. I had one bobbin done previously and I'm still working through the 1st 2oz ball. After 5 Happy Birthday B Cowmoons I have no Idea what these are.  They may be some strain relate to Highland Cattle at least that’s what they most resemble from an image search. B has always argued that what ever they are they are not cows. They have previously been Moose. He loves to tell me stories about them.  One is how the “cowmoons” eat apples.  I got a whole in depth story about ho the cowmoons use their “Antlers “ to knock down the apples. This morning on the way to school I asked him if he thought the Cowmoons would be 9ut and he said “No,  they won’t be out because there’s snow and they’ll get cold toes.”   Monster meat Sasquatch Jerky. bb
