New LGBTQ Film ”The Estate” On Hulu

OUTTAKE VOICES™ (Interviews)

Chris Baker talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new film “The Estate” a dark comedic thriller about real people doing despicable things. If you love movies like John Water's “Serial Mom” this must-see film delivers in the same guilty-pleasure vein. Written and starring Baker the film centers on the spoiled son and the newest wife (Eliza Coupe) of a billionaire patriarch (Eric Roberts) who plot to murder him forming a psychosexual bond with their brutally handsome hitman (Greg Finlay) as they kill in their quest for wealth and recognition. Baker also talks about when he was growing up all he ever wanted to do was to make movies and while he was an avid consumer he noticed the lack of films that reflected our LGBTQ community. When his director and producer asked what kind of film he wanted to do he remembered all the movies like “Cruel Intentions” and “Wild Things” and “Scream” and movies that had that balance of tone where things could be very funny but they could also kill people so Chris came back with the script for “The Estate”. The stellar cast also includes Heather Matarazzo, Rif Hutton, Alexander Billings, Kyle Rezzarday and Ezra Buzzington. The film is directed by James Kapner and produced by Rod Hamilton, Adam Makowka and Alixandra von Renner. We talked to Chris about his inspiration for writing “The Estate” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.   Chris Baker is a New York City native and Harvard graduate where he completed his thesis on the works of the New Queer Cinema auteur Todd Haynes. Baker first found success as a pop singer collecting millions of views on YouTube. He then studied with LA's best at the Upright Citizens Brigade and the Groundlings and had bit parts on Shondaland's “The Catch” and the NBC series “Marry Me” before writing and starring in his 2017 Funny or Die web series “Baker Daily” where he plays an inept cable news anchor who inadvertently gets Trump impeached. “The Estate” is available on Hulu and most VOD streaming outlets. A bomb goes off at the party motel, that’s what’s wrong! Killing four people, one of whom is the nephew of El Despiadado, a MEXICAN CRIME LORD oh Rob Thomas, must we?  • We must, and El Despiadado must send two guys to Neptune to chop off the head of whoever’s responsible for the bombing.  • But they’re not the only family with a stake in this crime: the brother of congressman Daniel Maloof lost his hand and his fiancee, and the Maloofs hire the Marses to investigate. And Matty, the teenage daughter of the motel owner who died, is tugging at Veronica’s heartstrings.  • We also meet some new characters: pizza delivery guy Patton Oswalt - er, Penn; Mr Hu, whose supermarket is being sabotaged with rats; and super cool bar owner Nicole, who sure can punch.  • Plus we have the return of ambulance-chasing Cliff; a still-recovering Keith; and Big Dick Casablancas, who’s campaigning to Make Neptune Great Again.  • Logan is also back, and he proposes to Veronica! What a prick! And he plays with Wallace’s baby! Ugh how dare he!  Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 episode 1: Spring Break Forever, and get stuck into such mysteries as why Wallace doesn't have his own adorable multi-camera sitcom already, whether Americans really do use cutesy swears like 'cockwaffle', and how come there's so much natural light in Neptune these days. Her writer/directorial debut feature was an independent film called A Quiet Little Marriage starring Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Cy Carter, Jimmi Simpson, Michael O’Neill, Charlie Day and Melanie Lynskey. On the festival circuit, it won many awards including the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance, and it was distributed by IFC. Her second feature film was a comedy called The Last Time You Had Fun starring Demetri Martin, Eliza Coupe, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Charlene Yi and Kyle Bornheimer. The film premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was distributed by Gravitas Ventures. Most recently Mo directed the second season, six episodes, of a romantic musical comedy called I Ship It for the CW. The movie that Mo has chosen is just a delight - 1986's Little Shop of Horrors. We've done it! It's the end of the franchise season! Peter Jackson's fantasy behemoth comes to a close — or does it? We talk about that feeling of ‘what now?', the way in which the narrative shifts perspectives, and the visual cinematic genius of Jackson. Before the guys get to their movies, Kris shares a story about an unconventional spice that he accidentally added to a friend’s coffee at the start of this week’s episode. First, Dave covers IT’S US (6:00), a painful, awkward drama with Eliza Coupe that’s one of the strangest relationship movies he has ever seen. Next, Evan reviews THE BIG SICK (15:45), a semi-autobiographical romantic comedy with Kumail Nanjiani that’s funny, sweet, and offers poignant thoughts on familial relationships. After that Dave tackles Sofia Coppola’s THE BEGUILED (28:06), a remake of the 1971 Don Siegel/Clint Eastwood film, where one of the noticeable differences is that Colin Farrell is purposely Irish. To wrap up, all of the guys take on BABY DRIVER (42:40), the latest Edgar Wright action flick, which has a lot less driving than they expected, but some entertaining moments and performances none the less. And in case you're wondering, here are the links to the animation for Dave's Ray Winstone reading "Are You My Mother" and Evan's interview with Kumail Nanjiani.
