Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Political correspondent Sam Sokol and reporter Diana Bletter join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Recently, attempts are being made to restart the controversial judicial overhaul legislation and last week, Sokol spoke with one of its architects, MK Simcha Rothman. We hear about Rothman’s perspective on why it is needed and in fact protects Israel's democracy. The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee will soon begin holding hearings on a proposed bill applying a Basic Law requiring a public referendum for land-for-peace deals to the West Bank and Israeli territorial waters, the Knesset’s right-wing Land of Israel Caucus announced on Wednesday. What is this bill and why do those who proposed it believe it will be passed at this time. Bletter went to the northern coastal city of Nahariya yesterday to witness how during the ceasefire, hospitals are moving from war footing and out of their bunkers. She brings tales from the maternity ward. Last week, Bletter visited Haifa to see how residents are -- once again -- celebrating the annual Holiday of Holidays that honors the mixed city's three major religions. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: MK threatens that judges ‘playing hardball’ will lead to resumption of judicial overhaul MKs push bill to block West Bank territorial concessions, prevent Palestinian state After months of Hezbollah rocket attacks, Haifa’s Christians get ready for Christmas Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Joining Jill and Doron on our 27th episode, the 9th of our second season, to tell us his story is Adrian Agassi, better known as Agi. Agi studied Law at Kings College London and was called to the Bar in 1986, the same year he made Aliyah.  In 1989, after receiving a Masters degree in Public International Law from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he was called to the Israel Bar and began a 20 year-long legal career in the IDF, rising to military judge with the rank of Major, presiding over land disputes in Judea and Samaria and anti-terrorism cases. On retiring from the IDF at the age of 44, he went to study at Aish HaTorah Yeshiva in Jerusalem, which led him to write numerical kabbalistic commentaries to the Torah and five megillot which appear on his web site (https://sites.google.com/site/shem18hai).  In 2013 he established a monthly Kollel for Kabbalah studies on Mount Zion in Jerusalem to pursue his passion for Jewish mysticism leading to the final redemption of Israel.  But for now he owns a lottery concession in Nahariya and dabbles in refurbishing classic cars.  He and his wife Hilary have six children. Hear Agi talk about saying kaddish for his father at Carmel, playing the judge in the 1982 production of Trial by Jury, the meaning of true love, smashing a car into Newnham House, life as an evacuee, ‘transvestite metals', and why he originally failed his Jewish Studies O-Level. Thank you, Adrian Agassi, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Agi's request, this episode is dedicated to Reverend and Mrs. Segal, of beloved memory, who in the 1970s were resident Orthodox Jewish Studies teaching staff at Carmel, committed to Jewish leadership of the school.  In their staff house, the Segals often hosted kiddush after shul services on Shabbat.  Prior to Carmel, Reverend Segal had been a Minister of Religion in Liverpool.  After Carmel, the Segals retired to Netanya, Israel.   Personal mentions in this episode: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen (Headmaster) Vera Rosen (Headmaster's wife) Isabel Craston (English & EFL) Reverend Segal (Jewish Studies) Mrs. Segal (Jewish Studies) Geoff Lebens (English literature) Dr. John Addis (History) Alistair Falk (English & School House Housemaster) Anthony Barr Taylor (Biology) Gordon Nickerson (EFL, Cricket & Mongewell Housemaster) Dr. Renee Grassby (Librarian) Paul Shaw (Jewish Studies) Alan Edmondson (Chemistry) Michael Tabor (English) John Browning (German & French) Jack Mizel Guy Alberga Lawrence Kirschel Steve Dabbah Paul Ozin Eric Abrahams Adam Science David Segal Robert Maxwell Gideon Moore Daniel Moore David Swanwick Adam Johnson Philip Shalam Lisa Rones Donna Kaufman David Solts Lewis Mail Danny Shirazi Simon Lew Jane Gold Judith Glass Douglas Green Sean Casper   Feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you liked about this episode, and rate us on your favorite podcast platform

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 241 of the war with Hamas. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Dolev Yehud, 35, initially thought to have been taken hostage to the Gaza Strip by Hamas terrorists on October 7, was declared dead after his body was identified in Israel, the military said. Why now and what do we know about his death? The IDF said on Sunday that troops had recently begun to operate in the Yabna camp in central Rafah, adjacent to the border with Egypt. We earlier had reported that there are four Hamas battalions in Rafah. Fabian explains what we know about the operations as well as Hamas's capabilities right now. The IDF said it intercepted a surface-to-surface missile heading toward Israel from the direction of the Red Sea. We hear how the ballistic missile, apparently launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, affected Israel's southernmost city of Eilat. The Nahariya municipality announced that schools and educational institutions opened as usual, a day after a drone strike hit the city for the first time. Fabian dives into how these drones are more accurate than missiles and appears to be Hezbollah's weapon of choice for the moment. The war cabinet convened Sunday evening to discuss the proposal and its possible implementation, given international and domestic pressure to accept the deal aimed at securing the release of 120 hostages believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza since being kidnapped on October 7. Would the IDF welcome a temporary ceasefire? For more updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today is Day 124 of the war. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman and health reporter Renee Ghert-Zand join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. In response to a proposal sent last week by Qatari and Egyptian mediators that was backed by the United States and Israel, Hamas has proposed a three-phase ceasefire plan that lead to an end to the war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly declared that the war will not end without total victory over Hamas. We hear about the plan and how Israel may respond. Weeks after medicine was delivered to the Gaza Strip for hostages held in Gaza, the countries involved in the complex operation still do not know whether the drugs eventually reached the captives. What is being done and by whom to discover what happened? Argentinian President Javier Milei landed in Israel yesterday to much fanfare and made a bombshell announcement of moving the embassy to Israel's capital, Jerusalem. What else is on his schedule? New research indicates that a quarter of Israelis are experiencing dreams so scary and vivid that they are waking us up in the middle of the night. What else did Ghert-Zand learn from Dr. Udi Bonshtein, chief psychologist at Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya? This war has seen dozens of war widows, many of whom are pregnant. Ahead of Family Day in Israel on Friday, Ghert-Zand looked into a new support organization. For the latest updates, please look at The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Live blog February 7, 2024 Hamas proposes 3-stage 135-day truce and hostage deal, leading to war's end – reports France seeking ‘verifiable proof' that medicines reached hostages in Gaza In first bilateral visit, Argentina's Milei says he will move embassy to Jerusalem Trying to get a good night's sleep has been a nightmare for many Israelis since Oct. 7 THOSE WE HAVE LOST: Civilians and soldiers killed in Hamas's onslaught on Israel THOSE WE ARE MISSING: The hostages and victims whose fate is still unknown Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. But he has never forgotten his Lebanese heritage, so when in the year 2000 vast numbers of Lebanese refugees poured over the border into northern Israel, Joseph and his wife Ibtissam were there to help them. A church started and ever since that time, Joseph and Ibtissam have travelled the long journey from Haifa to Nahariya several times a week … I asked him to describe an average week. Vitamin D deficiency linked to Covid-19 severity and mortality There is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 severity and mortality, according to a study conducted by Israeli researchers at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University in Safed and the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya. They published their results on February 3 in the journal PLOS ONE, Scitechdaily reports. Patients with vitamin D deficiency (less than 20 ng/mL) were 14 times more likely to have a severe or critical case of Covid-19 than those with more than 40 ng/mL, the study found, according to the Scitechdaily report. Amazon, Nike are considering independent bids for Peloton Amazon and Nike are among potential buyers of Peloton, whose stationary bikes and streamed fitness classes became a rage during the pandemic, but have since lost steam, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times. Peloton became a hit at the beginning of the pandemic when people were looking for fitness alternatives after their gyms closed due to lockdowns. But, as the US opened up and rivals cropped up with cheaper alternatives, the company lost its sales momentum to the extent that it recently stopped some production lines, according to CNBC. IIT-Gandhinagar researchers develop affordable water desalination technique Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar have developed a water desalination technique to make seawater potable by removing more than 99 percent of salt and other impurities with natural processing, according to a Press Trust of India report. The researchers have found a way to expand the space between layers of graphite in a controlled manner to selectively allow water, while filtering out salt, in a way similar to how trees take up water using a process called capillary action. The research findings have been published in the international journal Nature Communications. These findings could eventually help in designing affordable water desalination filters and other applications including gas purification, proton exchange in a fuel cell, chemical separation, recovery of precious metal from waste among others. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

There are times when a person has an immediate need, and he is ready to pour out his heart in tefila to Hashem, but then he thinks, so many things have to happen for me to get what I need right now and it is not possible for all of them to happen so quickly, so why should I bother praying? The person must realize that Hashem knows what he needs way before he does, and Hashem has already been preparing everything to be ready at the exact moment that it is needed. He is just waiting for the tefila to actually make it happen. Rabbi Elimelech Biderman told a story which recently took place in Israel. The boys from a certain yeshiva planned a trip to the north of Israel during one of their summer vacation days. On Tuesday, the 11 th of Av, they took a bus to various places, including Nahariya. For some inexplicable reason, they lingered in Nahariya much longer than they had planned on being there, and when they finally boarded the bus, they realized there was not enough time for them to get to their next destination, Meron, in time to pray Mincha. So they decided rather than just pray Mincha on the side of the road, they would look for the closest place where they could pray by the kever of a tzaddik. They found that not too far from where they were was the kever of the Amora Rabbi Oshaya Ish Tarya. It was next to Kfar Piki'in. Right when they got off the bus, they heard somebody saying in a loud voice, “Hashem is with us!” A couple then approached them and told them, in amazement, that Hashem had just answered their tefila and they explained. They had three children, all boys, and really wanted a girl. A year ago, they came to this kever and begged Hashem for a baby girl and added, if Hashem would grant their request, they would come back with all different types of foods and make berachot l'ilui nishmat the holy Amora Rabbi Oshaya, as well as thank Hashem for His great kindness. They did in fact have a baby girl born to them that year and they had come back to thank Hashem on this day, and they had with them a lot of food. Now, they were the only ones there at this time and they were planning on giving the food to dozens of people and making a type of seudat hoda'ah ( outside the cemetery, as eating in a cemetery is halachically forbidden). So they started to pray to Hashem to please send them a bus load of people to come participate with them and, less than 10 minutes later, this bus of yeshiva boys pulled up. The boys themselves were amazed. They had no idea why they delayed in Nahariya and missed their next destination, but now they discovered the reason. They figured out afterward that the exact same time that this couple was praying for people to come is when they made their decision to go to this kever . However, the delay in Nahariya which made the boys available to come took place before that tefila . That was because Hashem knew in advance that these people were going to have this need for the boys to come, so He set up the situation to be ready at the time of their prayer. Our job is to pray and not think so much of exactly how things are going to happen. That's Hashem's job, and He is always way ahead of us.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Some people might say if I see Hashem make an open miracle, then I'll believe in Him and observe Torah and mitzvot better. In those instances, most times, even if Hashem would make an open miracle for that person, he will not change his lifestyle. Believing in Hashem and observing Torah and mitzvot does not come from a one-time event or even multiple events. The Jewish People in Mitzrayim saw Hashem openly when He performed the ten makot and obliterated the Egyptians. Yet Chazal tell us, when it came time for the Jews to offer the korban Pesach , they were still attached to their avodah zara . Sometimes people say, “If Hashem does this for me then I'll be better.” Hashem then ends up doing exactly what the person asked for, but He did it in such a hidden way it didn't look like it was Him. Then, the person does not end up improving. Even when it is clear that Hashem does help us, we don't necessarily change as a result. Rabbi Elchanan Sharoni told he gives shiurim to ba'aleh teshuva in the city of Acco. One day, a man walked into the shul, telling everybody about an open miracle which happened with his daughter. When she was born, she had a small hole in her heart which caused her to be very weak. The doctors told her parents at that time they would not be able to do a surgery to correct it until she turned 16 years old. A couple of weeks before her 16 th birthday, she was having shortness of breath and was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Nahariya. X-rays were done there which showed a one centimeter hole in her heart. She was treated and sent home, and at that time they scheduled a surgery to fix the hole. This man's friend told him about a respected mekubal who was known for giving out a kameya (amulet) which helped for these kinds of things. They made an appointment with the rabbi and the girl was given a kameya as well as a beracha for a refuah shelemah . They prayed every single day after that with tears that she should get better on her own. When they eventually went for x-rays before the surgery, they showed that there was no longer any hole in the heart of that girl. The doctors ordered another x-ray and again it showed that there was no hole. An expert doctor was called in to analyze this development. He saw the x-ray from weeks before with the one centimeter hole, saw the current x-rays that showed there was no hole, and he was in awe. The doctor said, “For a hole in the heart to just close up is possible only until the age of 5, but after that, it can't happen.” So the father asked the doctor, “How do we explain this?” The doctor replied, “This is nothing short of a miracle.” The father then told the doctor about the kameya and the tefilot, and they were both amazed. When the man finished telling everyone in the shul about his story, he vowed to become fully shomer Torah and mitzvot . At the time, he was not religious at all. He also vowed to attend the nightly classes given there. However, after just a few days of attending the classes, he stopped coming and, in fact, did not become a shomer Torah and mitzvot . Miracles don't change people. If somebody wants to become more of a believer or more of an observer, it comes through learning with a desire to grow; learning about Hashem and learning Torah. They are what give us the spiritual energy we need to fight off the yetzer hara and do our jobs properly in this world. Seeing miracles is great but they are not what change us.

Supporting Torah Study - The Yissachar-Zevulun Partnership

When Yaakob gave blessings to all his sons before his death, he pronounced about the tribe of Zebulun, "Zebulun Le’hof Yamim Yishkon" – that this tribe would reside along the coast and be merchants, earning money by buying and selling. The tribe of Yissachar, meanwhile, would be the tribe of Torah scholars, and they would be supported by Zebulun. These two tribes entered into a partnership, whereby the wealthy merchants of Zebulun supported the scholars of Yissachar, and thus received some of the reward for Yissachar’s Torah study. This is indicated also by Moshe Rabbenu’s blessings before his death, when he declared, "Semach Zebulun Be’setecha Ve’Yissachar Be’ohalecha" – "Rejoice, Zebulun when you go out, and Yissachar in your tents." Zebulun would go out to earn money, while Yissachar remained in the "tents" of Torah learning. The Poskim established that any two people can enter into such a partnership, and it is not limited to the tribes of Yissachar and Zebulun. Any person from any tribe can support any scholar from any tribe, and thereby earn a share in the reward. The question arises as to whether the Yissachar-Zebulun partnership requires specifically a "50/50" arrangement. Normally, when two people form a "Shutafut" (partnership), it means that everything is shared equally. Thus, if the Yissachar-Zebulun partnership follows the standard model of partnerships, this would mean that the donor must give the scholar 50 percent of his earnings. If the donor is very wealthy, and earns, for example, $100 million, he would be required to give the scholar he supports $50 million. This is, indeed, the view of the Shach (Rav Shabtai Ha’kohen, 1621-1662), commenting to Yoreh De’a (246). Rav Haim Ben-Attar (d. 1743) also expresses this view in his Or Ha’haim (Shemot 30:13), in discussing the law of Mahasit Ha’shekel (the half-shekel tax to the Bet Ha’mikdash). He writes that a half-shekel is given to the Bet Ha’mikdash just like merchants give half of their earnings to scholars in the Yissachar-Zebulun partnership.Others, however, disagree. The Hid"a (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) writes that this partnership requires the donor to give only what the scholar needs for his livelihood. The rationale behind this ruling is that the Yissachar-Zebulun partnership is made for the purpose of facilitating Yissachar’s Torah learning. Without someone else’s support, Yissachar is unable to devote himself to full-time study, because he would need to work to earn a living for himself and his family, and so Zebulun earns a share in Yissachar’s learning by providing his livelihood and thereby enabling him to learn. As such, it suffices for Zebulun to give Yissachar what he needs for his and his family’s sustenance, so he can devote his time to learning. If, for example, the scholar needs $50,000 a year to cover his expenses, then this is what Zebulun needs to provide, even if Zebulun earns many millions of dollars.Proof to this position may be brought from the Gemara’s discussion in Masechet Sota, regarding the possibility of a woman earning the merit of Torah study. The Gemara there states that a Sota (wife suspected of infidelity) could be protected from the special waters (that would normally kill her if she was in fact guilty) if she has some Zechut (merit). Addressing the question of what kind of Zechut she could have, the Gemara says that this could refer to the merit of Torah learning. Even though women are not included in the Misva of Torah study, nevertheless, they earn merit by assisting and enabling their husbands to learn Torah, and by bringing their children to and from school where they learn Torah. The implication is that the wife is an equal partner in her husband and children’s Torah learning, even though she is, quite obviously, not giving half of everything she has towards their learning. This would seem to prove that the reward is earned through the facilitation of learning, irrespective of the percentage of one’s earnings that is given. This is, indeed, the Halacha, and thus one who wishes to perform the great Misva of entering into a Yissachar-Zebulun partnership needs to give the scholar only what the scholar needs for his livelihood. Many years ago, a certain individual approached me and expressed interest in forming such a partnership, offering to grant me financial support so I could learn, and he would receive half my reward. (In the end, this man chose not to enter this partnership.) I went to my Rabbi, Hacham Baruch Ben-Haim (1921-2005), and posed to him the following question. He taught us that half a man’s reward for his Torah learning is granted to his wife. I wondered, then, if somebody supports me to learn, in exchange for half the reward, and the other half goes to my wife, does this mean that I am then left without any reward? Hacham Baruch replied that if a scholar is supported and thus shares his reward with his donor, Hashem makes up the rest. The verse states in Parashat Mishpatim (Shemot 24:14), "Im Sachir Hu, Ba Bi’scharo" – "If he is hired, then it comes with his salary." Hacham Baruch explained that if a Torah scholar is a "Sachir" – "hired," paid to devote himself to learning, then "Ba Bi’scharo" – Hashem will supplement his reward so nothing is lost. The Shulhan Aruch (Yoreh De’a 246) writes that such a partnership should be made by somebody who is "overburdened" and thus does not have time for Torah study. This would imply that the person has no time for serious or full-time Torah learning, but he must nevertheless make some time to learn. One who performs the great Misva of supporting Torah scholars does not thereby absolve himself of the obligation to learn Torah. Even though he might not have significant periods of time each day for learning, he must find some time for Torah study. The Gemara famously teaches that after a person leaves this world, he will be asked a number of questions, including, "Kabata Ittim La’Torah," which is conventionally interpreted to mean, "Did you set aside time for learning?" However, Rav David Abuhasera of Nahariya (contemporary) noted that the verb "K.B.A." can also refer to theft. Accordingly, the question, "Kabata Ittim La’Torah" might be understood to mean, "Did you steal time for Torah?" We are all very busy, with a lot of responsibilities and obligations, and so in order to learn Torah, we need to "steal" time that ordinarily would be used for something else. We might explain along these lines the first question which the Gemara says a person will be asked – "Nasata Ve’natata Be’emuna" ("Did you conduct business honestly?"). This might mean, "Did you conduct business with Emuna," with faith, using one’s earnings to support Torah learning. And even though he did, he will still be asked whether he "stole" time from his busy schedule to learn Torah. In conclusion, it is worth noting a startling remark by Rav Haim Abulafia of Teverya (1660-1744), cited by Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in his Yabia Omer. One of the benefits of Torah learning, as the Gemara teaches, is that it helps us overcome our Yeser Ha’ra (evil inclination). Rav Haim Abulafia writes that one who supports Torah scholars earns even this benefit of the scholars’ learning. Even though he spends his day working, he will receive assistance in overcoming the spiritual challenges he faces in the merit of the Torah learning which he facilitates. Rav Haim Abulafia explains on this basis Moshe’s aforementioned blessing to Zebulun, "Semah Zebulun Be’setecha" – "Rejoice, Zebulun, when you go out." He should rejoice because he can feel confident knowing that the Torah learning he supports will help him control his Yeser Ha’ra, as though he learned the Torah himself.Summary: It is a great Misva to support Torah scholars. One who gives a scholar enough support so he can spend his time invested in learning without having to earn a livelihood receives half the scholar’s reward for his Torah.

Julia Fisher talks to Joseph Haddad - He describes himself as an Israeli Arab Lebanese man with a heart for the Jewish people! He has no problems with identity! He and his wife lead a church in northern Israel which includes refugees from Lebanon, Israeli Arabs (some are former Muslims) and Jewish people. His passion for all peoples is relatively unusual so I asked him to describe how he came to this position. Our aim is to build bridges... To build bridges of understanding and support, in a spirit of reconciliation, between believers (both Jewish and Arab) in the Holy Land (Israel and the Palestinian Areas) and Christians worldwide. olivetreefund.org

Throughout World War II and in the aftermath, persecuted Jews tried to find their way into the British Mandate of Palestine, often deemed illegally by British authorities, as the Royal Navy tried to stop them. On December 14, 1945, the ship Hannah Senesh, carrying 252 refugees, evaded British patrols and beached itself at Nahariya in Palestine. The passengers came ashore via a rope bridge and evaded capture. Large-scale Jewish immigration to Palestine increased regional tensions, which would explode into war in 1948 with the invasion of the newly established State of Israel by its Arab neighbors. Truman was the first US president to be faced with trouble in the Middle East; he would not be the last.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

In this week’s parasha, Pinchas, we read about the rewards Pinchas received for risking his life to bring honor to the Name of Hashem. Hashem brought it about that Pinchas would be the one to have the opportunity to end the plague. Moshe forgot the halacha and it was Pinchas who remembered it. This was Pinchas’s time to be elevated to greatness, but he had to first put forth enormous self-sacrifice to accomplish it. He rose to the occasion and was given eternal rewards Every time a person is given a test, it’s Hashem giving him an opportunity to elevate himself and thereby access the blessing that Hashem wants to give him. A woman told me, two years ago she had a very big test. It was so difficult for her, and she finally overcame it. She said the very same day, she received a call from a shadchan saying that he has a good girl for her son and, baruch Hashem, that girl is the one that her son married. She said, “I felt that right when I overcame the test, Hashem poured down the blessing – the shidduch .” Exactly a year later, she had another very big test that was going on with her neighbors and she and her husband didn’t know how to handle it. One night they went out to walk around and talk about it, and they said we have to give in and be mivater. We have to do the ratzon Hashem. After they decided they were going to do ratzon Hashem, on their way home before they came into the house, a rabbi was walking by and said, “Hi, I think I have a good shidduch for your daughter.” And right then and there, the next marriage was planted and that shidduch also came to fruition. She said, “Again Hashem sent us a difficult nisayon and after I overcame it, he sent us the blessing.” The first step for us is to realize that we are being tested, that Hashem is setting up the circumstances just to give us a test. Rabbi Chaim Zaid told that he was asked to give a couple of speeches in a hotel in Nahariya. They were having some type of Shabbaton there, and on Sunday they wanted him to speak twice, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. He came all the way from Bnei Brak by train. He had to wake up early and pray Netz that day, and he figured he would eat breakfast in the hotel before the speech. It was a long journey and he got there at about 10:00 in the morning. When he arrived he saw that the breakfast had just closed. He was very hungry and there was no time to look for food as his class was about to start. He found the coffee station and had a small cup of coffee and gave the shiur . Afterward, people came over to talk to him and he ended up spending the entire day there in the lobby giving people advice and chizuk . Finally, at 5:15, he had to give his second speech. He did not eat any lunch. After the shiur , it was 6:15, and he had to catch the 7:00 train back to Bnei Brak and dinner wasn’t going to be served in the hotel until 7:00. Now he was really starving. He asked someone if there was a kosher restaurant in the neighborhood with a good hashgacha . The man replied, “Yeah, go down the block, make a right and a left and you’ll see it.” He went. On the way there, he realized he didn’t bring his wallet that day. He just had his train card and 40 shekalim on him. As he was waiting on the line in the restaurant, he saw a sign which said that there was a special, a meal with french fries and a soda for 39 shekalim . Perfect , he thought, just the amount that I have . He waited patiently and when he was next on- line, someone came over to him and said, “How are you tzaddik ?” He replied, “Baruch Hashem, how can I help you?” The man said, “Please, I need help. I’m trying to get back to my house in Tel Aviv and I have no money. I need money for the train. Could you please give me 40 shekalim ?” Rabbi Zaid thought to himself, H e’s taking the food out of my mouth! Why is he asking me, there are so many people here? I’m next! And then he thought about it some more and said, there’s no question this whole thing was set up – it’s a nisayon from Hashem. Am I going to give up my dinner to help a fellow Jew? He said, “I got off that line and told him, ‘I’m actually going to the train station. I’ll come with you, no problem.’” He went with him and bought him the ticket. He said he felt so good giving away that money, realizing he was overcoming the nisayon that was hand-picked for him by Hashem. The man asked him for his name. He told him Chaim Zaid. He said, “I want to pay you back.” The Rabbi replied, “No, it’s my pleasure.” If the story would have ended there, it’s a great story, with the lesson of recognizing when a nisayon is being given. But there’s more! The very next day, Rabbi Zaid had his wallet stolen, and he had a lot of money in it - $2500 and 1000 shekalim . While he was calling to cancel his credit cards, he received a phone call. It was from that man who he helped yesterday. He said, “Rabbi, I’m on a bus now on the way to Cholon. Someone just came on the bus and put his card in to pay, and he left it here. I’m sitting next to the bus driver, he told me to bring it back to him. I looked at it. Your picture is on it. I said, I know you. I just saw you yesterday. What is your card doing here? And your number is on it so I am calling to find out.” The Rabbi said, “Please help! He stole my wallet. I need it back!” This man was able to go and confront the thief and get the wallet back. The Rabbi concluded, “This was all Hashem. He set up the circumstance in advance to give me the opportunity to access the help that I was going to need.” It was only through him overcoming the nisayon that enabled him to get that help. This is the way it works with all nisyonot in life. Hashem is giving us the tests so that we’ll be able to elevate ourselves and access the blessings that He has waiting for us. There are so many blessings that Hashem wants to give us. Let us grab the opportunities and rise to the challenges and enable, kavayachol , Hashem to bestow all of them upon us.

Also, 1300 Palestinians died compared to only 13 Israelis: 100 to 1 ratio, a Biblical miracle.   ISRAEL AND GAZA: MIRACLES THAT HAPPENED ISRAEL AND GAZA: AN ABORTED VICTORY ISRAEL: IT IS NOT TIME TO PUT UP YOUR SWORD   MUSIC  / INTRO “But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn't blow the trumpet, and the people aren't warned, and the sword comes, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.” (Ezekiel 33:6) “Cursed be he who does the work of YHWH negligently; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood.” (Jeremiah 48:10) So why Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, have you a cease fire with Hamas that wins you nothing, and that at the cost of some Israeli lives. Tzipi, your parents have surely taught you better than this. They were frontier people: forgers of the path. Your father was with Irgun. Tzipi, you have been in a lot of leadership roles, but it is TIME for you to be a LEADER. By the way, Tzipi, congratulations on trying to get the EU to work with the US CTF-151 to intercept Iranian arms shipments through the Gulf of Aden. Perhaps, Tzipi, you could contribute to a Greater Israel, by little things. Remember Golda Meir? Did the Institute take the fight out of you? I really doubt that. Why not be a “Deborah” for your people. It’s time. Or, work with Benjamin Netanyahu. There is nothing wrong with working together to WIN. The Jewish People of Israel need UNITY and MIRACLES. Why not place yourself in a position for this to happen. Why discourage the brave IDF and IAF warriors who give of their youth and strength for Israel … and you give back what they win. Israel, summarily with this cease fire, has NOT achieved any of its goals, while submitting to Hamas two main demands. Israel, you were attacked in 1967 and 1973. You won these wars. Then, you gave back land you won, and that being land Adonai promised you. MUSIC Why are you NOT afraid of Hamas and Hezbollah, but you are afraid of the EU. Why are you afraid of what the EU thinks about you? You are just what Messiah described: “Children playing in the market and saying, ‘Why won’t you dance to my tune?’” Why, Ehud O and Ehud B, do you almost win a complete victory, but then turn your back on Israel – the people you are supposed to serve – and give in to the enemy. You two “Ehuds” could have been a savior to Israel like Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjamite. But when the children of Israel cried to YHWH, YHWH raised them up a savior, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. Instead of a saving your people, you sold them. If a young man is engaged to a girl, and then finds out she is seeing his enemy behind his back, should the chatan keep covenant with the kallah? Should they keep Kabbalat Panim? Should a Sephardic say She'hecheyanu? Why do you betray your people, leaders of Israel. Messiah gives you victory and then you give it to the enemy. You are false shepherds of Israel. You let the European leaders from UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic into Jerusalem and instruct you how to open the sea ports of Israel to allow materials to repair Gaza for the next several years. They want to open the six Gaza crossings and then put you into a net like Samson so you will NOT be able to shut them off ever again. The picture is plain: 92% of Jewish Israelis believe the Gaza conflict was necessary and just. Miracles from G-d attended to the spiritual morality of this conflict. For example: The soldiers themselves had a huge spiritual hunger, and were unified in not only asking for prayer but also praying themselves, wearing tzitzit (prayer tassles) into battle and carrying the book of Psalms with them. The Rabbis were calling the tzitzit "heavenly flak jackets!" Tent synagogues on the battlefield had no less than 10 sessions every morning, and it is reported that soldiers who never attended synagogue were praying with tefillim. They had reason to cry out to God, since everyone is aware of the years of preparation of the bloodthirsty Hamas militants, their desire to kill, maim or kidnap Israeli soldiers is greater than their desire to live; they have been financed by Iran and supported by Syria and Hezbollah. MUSIC GAZA MIRACLES There were reports daily of amazing miracles of protection and Divine direction during the battle. The following are just a few examples: A Hamas map was found, with booby-traps, landmines and sniper positions clearly spelled out. The IDF was able to counter each installation due to the information given. A large platoon of soldiers not realizing they were resting in a school that was booby-trapped, (discovered by a soldier relieving himself in the night), disarmed the bombs with no one hurt. A single soldier successfully fought off several Hamas terrorists trying to drag him into a tunnel, and all were captured. Hundreds of tunnels, hidden in homes under beds and kitchen cabinets, all full of live explosives and ammunition, yet none have exploded with IDF soldiers inside A young man who moved to Israel alone from England less than 2 years ago to serve in the army was in an explosion, and thrown into the air. After being carried off the field by other soldiers and transported on a tractor to helicopter and then to hospital, the doctors were utterly stunned when they saw that a piece of shrapnel that went completely through his neck, missed the carotid artery, the jugular vein and the spinal cord by millimeters. After they removed it, he needed only stitches. Another soldier was shot through the back but the bullet missed his spinal cord and exited from the front. A young newlywed, in grave condition, inexplicably turned for the better and will recover to go home to his wife. A bomb heading toward 4 apartment buildings goes into a sewer pipe and explodes underground, damaging nothing above ground. An elderly woman caught in an apartment completely demolished by a bomb, walks out with scratches on her ankle. The mayor of Beersheva felt he should cancel school one day, and a rocket completely destroys an empty kindergarten. The elder housing complex that was hit in Nahariya had the sleeping quarters destroyed, but everyone had just gone to breakfast, so no one injured. A man leaves his car with his young daughter, and the car is blown up moments later after they entered a bomb shelter. If they had taken a few more seconds, he and his daughter would have been burned to a crisp. He was televised saying again and again it was a miracle. MUSIC But once again, as in the 1967 and 1973 conflicts, we see casualty statistics of Biblical proportions: 1300 Philistines (same Hebrew root word as Palestinians) killed and only 13 Israelis. That’s 100 enemy casualties to every 1 Israeli casualty. So why not fight to the end?! WHAT ISRAEL NEEDS Israel, you need leaders who will fight, win, and not give back what victories YHWH NISSI gives you. King Saul defeated Agag and the Amelekites but did not destroy King Agag as G-d instructed him to do. The Prophet Samuel told King Saul, “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of YHWH, he has also rejected you from being king.” The Prophet Jeremiah said, “Cursed be he who does the work of YHWH negligently; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood.” (Jeremiah 48:10) It is time for you to step aside, false shepherds of Israel, and let leaders arise who are True Shepherds: valiant leaders for Israel and the Jewish People. The leaders of the nations – nations who used to be your friends when it was expedient for them to do so – are turning against you. Those who say they are for you will stab you in the back and force you to yield to a divided territory: to give up land for a Palestinian state. There is already a Palestinian State – and has been since 1923 – Transjordan. You must STAND ALONE with YHWH. You are entering the End Times. The US is NOT going to help you. The EU is NOT going to help you. The UN is NOT going to help you. The media is NOT going to help you. Your ONLY hope is in the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You must set yourself for the long haul AND for the return of Messiah. Baruch haba b’Shem Adonai.
