Salve! This is a bonus episode for Brazuca Sounds paid subscribers!Every episode is a different song. This is the song today:"Emoriô" and "Naturalemente" by Fafá de BelémToday we're celebrating the first compacto (single) released in 1975 by singer Fafá de Belém. "Emoriô" was written by João Donato with lyrics by Gilberto Gil, and its Afro-Brazilian arrangements, heavy percussion, and repetitive chorus elevated 19-year-old Fafá into a Brazilian star. The B-side, "Naturalmente", written by Donato with lyrics by Caetano Veloso, is no less impressive, with its carimbó rhythm, and putting a spotlight for the first time on the North sounds of Brazil, especially the state of Pará, where the singer was from. Caetano's lyrics are "a veritable linguistic playground", almost a catalog of Amazonian terminology, and I recommend checking out the full translation with our friends at Translationsmith.

The sons of Ra'mah were Sh'va and D'dan.8 Kush fathered Nimrod, who was the first powerful ruler on earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before Adonai — this is why people say, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Adonai.” 10 His kingdom began with Bavel, Erekh, Akkad and Kalneh, in the land of Shin'ar. 11 Ashur went out from that land and built Ninveh, the city Rechovot, Kelach, 12 and Resen between Ninveh and Kelach — that one is the great city.13 Mitzrayim fathered the Ludim, the 'Anamim, the L'havim, the Naftuchim, 14 the Patrusim, the Kasluchim (from whom came the P'lishtim) and the Kaftorim.15 Kena'an fathered Tzidon his firstborn, Het, 16 the Y'vusi, the Emori, the Girgashi, 17 the Hivi, the 'Arki, the Sini, 18 the Arvadi, the Tz'mari and the Hamati. Afterwards, the families of the Kena'ani were dispersed. 19 The border of the Kena'ani was from Tzidon, as you go toward G'rar, to 'Azah; as you go toward S'dom, 'Amora, Admah and Tzvoyim, to Lesha.20 These were the descendants of Ham, according to their families and languages, in their lands and in their nations.Lineage of Shem21 Children were also born to Shem, ancestor of all the descendants of 'Ever and older brother of Yefet. 22 The sons of Shem were 'Elam, Ashur, Arpakhshad, Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were 'Utz, Hul, Geter and Mash. 24 Arpakhshad fathered Shelach, and Shelach fathered 'Ever. 25 To 'Ever were born two sons. One was given the name Peleg [division], because during his lifetime the earth was divided. His brother's name was Yoktan. 26 Yoktan fathered Almodad, Shelef, Hatzar-Mavet, Yerach, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 'Oval, Avima'el, Sheva, 29 Ofir, Havilah and Yovav — all these were the sons of Yoktan. 30 Their territory stretched from Mesha, as you go toward S'far, to the mountain in the east.31 These were the descendants of Shem, according to their families and languages, in their lands and in their nations.32 These were the families of the sons of Noach, according to their generations, in their nations. From these the nations of the earth were divided up after the flood.

We are in Tehilim 44, 7 where David Hamelech says, I do not rely on my bow and my sword will not help me. The Gemara in Bava Batra 123A finds a connection between this and the words Yaakov Avinu tells Yosef, “ I'm going to give you an extra portion that I took from the Emori. I took it with my sword and my arrow. On this, the Gemara asks, “ Do Jewish people win wars with their swords and the arrows? As David Hamelech says, כי לא בקשתי אבטח ולרבי לא תושיעני /I do not rely on my bow, and my sword will not help me. Obviously, Yaakov Avinu is no different. So what is the sword of the Jewish people and what is the arrow of the Jewish people? The Yalkut Shemoni explains, in Yeshaya chapter 41, where Hashem tells the Jewish people referring to the end of time, Our sword refers to prayer , and קשתי refers to requests . Don't be afraid, the worm Yaakov. That's a strange term to use when you're giving someone words of comfort and inspiration. The Midrash says, Just like a worm is very small and easily crushed, and yet it could bring down cedar trees with its mouth, so too with the Jewish people, their strength is with their mouth, with prayer . It goes on to bring the example of our pasuk where David Hamelech says, I don't win my wars with my arrows or with my sword, rather with my prayer. David Hamelech goes back to his childhood, to his first major confrontation with Goliat. When he tells Goliat, אתה בא אלי בחרב ובחנית וגו / You come with your sword and your shield and I come in the name of Hashem,” And David Hamelech says again in Tehilim, אלה ברכב ואלה בסוסים / they fight with their chariots and their horses….Our bows and arrows, our swords are our prayer, and that's always the Jewish pride. The Brisker Rav, in his commentary on Bereshit 48, 22 on this pasuk where Yaakov Avinu says, I won the war with my sword and my arrow, brings the Targum Onkelus that translates חרב as צלותי and קשתי as בעותי , my prayer and my request. What's the difference between a prayer and a request, and what is the difference between a sword and an arrow? The Brisker Rav explains that a sword is naturally sharp. It can cut and kill. But a bow and arrow do not have the power, in themselves, to cause harm just by touch. Rather, it's the force and energy that's put into the arrow that shoots from afar that pierces and punctures and damages. So there's a difference between the sword that has a slicing power, like a sharp knife that can cut somebody's finger, and the arrow, which needs force from behind. So too, he says, with prayer. There are two kinds of prayers. There are the prayers that the Rabbis of the Great Assembly enacted, called our Amida , and there are personal prayers. And there's a difference between them. For some prayers, we need to inject Kavanah. That's like the arrow, that's like the keshet . Then other prayers have inherent power to them-,the prayers of the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah. Men of the great assembly. The Amida they made for us, that's a sword. That has a power regardless of the person that prays, just like the sword is inherently powerful. If you pray the Amida with a Sibbur, regardless of who you are, you have that power called the Amida, and that's the Cherev/ the sword. U'B'Kashti , which means with my arrow, can also be read as U'Bakashati/My requests . Those are personal requests for the individual. Those personal requests are like an arrow that you have to inject your kavanah , your force into, in order for that prayer to be answered. The beauty of this is that we can see how exacting our spiritual ammunition is. We have spiritual ammunition that's like a sword, and we have spiritual ammunition that is like an arrow. I'm sure there are many more spiritual ammunitions. For example, the Hebrew word Tilim means missiles , and Tehilim is sometimes referred to as Tilim . The bottom line is, as David Hamelech says, we should appreciate that when we're talking about arms that we need for our wars and our fights, that's not what we really need. Of course, we need to do things Al Pi Teva/we have to act naturally . But when governments threaten that they're not going to send us arms, we have to understand that we deal with different arms . That's what David Hamelech is telling us. It's not about my sword, or about my bow. The Jewish people have different ammunition.

In a similar vein, the end of this portion states, “which I took from the Emori by my sword and by my bow.” Onkelos renders this “bitzlosi uva'usi” – with my prayer and my plea – the service of tefillah, where the law is, “One should not stand to pray except with a solemn mindset” – humility. B) “Which I took from the hand of the Emori (‘the seven nations') with my sword and with my bow” represents the conquest of the seven emotive attributes through tefillah. Here, there is a special advantage to the “bow” (which can hit even a distant enemy) – it is specifically through “my plea” (which connotes an even greater degree of supplication than “my prayer”) that the hidden elements of kelipah are destroyed.Excerpt from sichah of 10 Teves 5742 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=26-12-2023

Mo'av was very afraid of the people, because there were so many of them; Mo'av was overcome with dread because of the people of Isra'el."Our Torah portion this week contains the “Ma Tovu,” liturgy which we sing every Shabbat and at other special gatherings especially when we enter the synagogue. Learn how this now famous blessing was originally ten curses uttered by the false prophet B'laam and which were meant to destroy the people of Israel. Hashem turned them all around, but we are truly only experiencing one blessing as a people. How is this incident related to the previous event of the Golden Calf? Learn about the words “Shochen” (neighbor) and “Chen” (friend) and how B'laam managed to weaken the People of Israel. Parashat Hukat: Avoiding Conflict – the Ultimate Good

Insight of the Week

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2022

The Haftara read on Shabbat Parashat Hukat is taken from the Book of Shoftim (11), and tells the story of Yiftah, the general who led a successful battle against the enemy nation of Amon, which had initiated hostilities against Beneh Yisrael. Before going out to battle, Yiftah sent a message to the king of Amon, who had claimed that Beneh Yisrael was living in his territory. Yiftah explained the history of the region in question, which is told in Parashat Hukat. This region had been captured by Sihon, king of the Emori, from the nation of Moab, and later, when Beneh Yisrael requested the right to peacefully pass through this area to reach the Land of Israel, Sihon attacked them. Beneh Yisrael fought back and seized the territory. This is the connection between the story of Yiftah and Parashat Hukat. The story of Yiftah begins by informing us that Yiftah was the child of an "Isha Zona," a term which has been interpreted in different ways. The Targum (Aramaic translation) translates this expression as "Pundekita," referring to a woman who runs an inn or a shop. The Radak (Rav David Kimhi, France, 1160-1235) explains that Yiftah's mother was a "Pilegesh" (concubine), or secondary wife. Yet a third explanation is given by Rabbenu Bahya (Spain, 1255-1340), in Parashat Maseh. He writes that Yiftah's mother had no brothers, and thus she inherited her father's estate. She then married a man from a different tribe – which was against accepted protocol, as this resulted in her father's tribe losing this property to her husband's tribe. Women who violated this convention were derisively called "Isha Zona" (literally, "a harlot"). We then read that Yiftah's brothers drove him away from the family, because they did not want him to receive a share in their father's inheritance. They felt that he did not deserve a share because of who is mother was. According to all the interpretations mentioned earlier, this was wrong. As the Radak writes, Yiftah fully deserved an equal share of his father's estate, and his brothers had no right to send him away and deny him a portion. Remarkably, Yiftah responded by simply moving away. He did not file a complaint against his brothers in court, or wage any fight against them. Although his brothers acted wrongly, he moved away and avoided a Mahloket (fight). This is an inspiring example of the principle taught by Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1868) that one must flee from Mahloket like he would from a wildfire. Fighting is so destructive that it is worth sacrificing and foregoing even on that which one rightfully deserves to avoid it. We are told that when Yiftah left his family, he settled in a place called "Eretz Tob" – literally, "the Land of Good" (11:3). One commentator explained the significance of this region's name based on the story of creation (Bereshit 1). After each of the six days of creation, the Torah tells, "Va'yar Elokim Ki Tob" ("G-d saw it was good") – except after the second day of creation. The Rabbis explained that on the second day, G-d created the sky by separating between the upper waters and the lower waters, and thus, in effect, on this day, G-d created division. For this reason, He could not say about this day's creation, "It was good." Divisiveness and conflict cannot be described as "good." Yiftah wisely avoided a full-blown conflict with his brothers, and so he is said to have resided in "Eretz Tob," the "Land of Good," because the ultimate good is avoiding fighting. Often, people get into fights because they feel that they will gain from it, or that they will retrieve that which they rightfully deserve. But they fail to realize that the harm caused by fighting far outweighs any benefit that it could possibly yield. The greatest form of "goodness" which we can experience is peaceful relations with other people, and avoiding all strife and conflict.

Brazīlija neatkarību no Portugāles ieguva 1822. gadā.

1. Berachos in places where miracles occurred All are obligated to make a berachah when seeing a place where miracles were performed for the masses, but only an individual is obligated to make a berachah on a miracle performed for him alone. 2. Eight places where miracles occured A Baraisa enumerates eight places where one is obligated to recite a berachah for the miracles performed there. 1. Where the Yam Suf was crossed. 2. Where the Jordan was crossed. 3. At the crossing of the Canyons of Arnon )ארנון נחלי מעברות ,)where the Amorites waiting in ambush were miraculously crushed in the mountains. 4. At the stones of Elgavish in the descent of Beis-Choron. These were the hailstones that were suspended in midair for the sake of Moshe and later came down for the sake of Yehoshua when he defended Givon in the battle with the Emori. 5. At the stone that King Og of Bashan wanted to throw at the nation. 6. At the stone that Moshe sat on during the war with Amalek. 7. At the remains of Lot’s wife. 8. At the wall of Jericho, which was swallowed. The Gemara elaborates on the eight miracles. 3. Bentching gomel and having a shomer (guardian) Rav Yehudah said in the name of Rav that four types of people must give thanks and bentch gomel, because they survived dangerous situations: • One who travels across the sea. • One who travels through a wilderness. • One who recovers from an illness. • One who is freed from prison. Rav Yehudah further taught that three types of people need protection from mazikin (demons): A sick person is more vulnerable, because his mazel has turned for the worse. A chassan and kallah are also in danger, because they evoke the jealousy of mazikin. Siman – Noodles The caterer transporting spaghetti noodles across the desert bentched gomel after finally delivering them to the well-guarded chassan and kallah, who were busy making berachos in the eight places where miracles had occurred. Key Words – miracle place, eight places, gomel and shomer

Richard Harmon was born into a film family and grew up on Vancouver sets. He's been acting for 19 years now (a veteran of the business before he hits his 30s), and his filmography is populated by complicated characters with questionable morals and inner demons – characters like Julian in Continuum, Richard in Bates Motel, Jasper in The Killing, a serial killer frat boy in Karen Lam's exceedingly creepy Evangeline, Max in Van Helsing, conflicted photographer Jake in Woodland, and the role for which he's built a following around the world: that of John Murphy on The 100. Richard had only been hired for the pilot but there was something about him that made the producers eager for him to stick around, first as a recurring character, and then as full-time cast. As The 100 prepares to say goodbye at the end of its seventh season, Richard reflects on his time as Murphy – how he's changed as a human being since the pilot; whether he sees Murphy as a hero; how he feels about Emori and Luisa d'Oliveira – and where he hopes to go from here. Hello and welcome back to Meta Station, where the takes are HOT and the zombie supersoldiers are COLD, and the jokes are weird because we’re both on book deadlines and slowly losing our minds. Erin unfortunately cannot be with us today, as she is dead, on account of what a motherfucking drama queen Bellamy Blake was when he strode dramatically into the spotlight holding his dad mug aloft to rescue Clarke from death at the hands of Claire’s new MILF crush Diyoza. But prior to her untimely demise from FEELS ATTACKS we had tons of shit to say about everything from the increasingly chilling Season 1 Grounder parallels (somewhere in the afterlife, Anya is genuinely touched that Clarke was paying such close attention), to Zeke Shaw as the show’s second and FAR more successful attempt at the Finn Collins character template, to what in the wide wide world of sports “don’t let Diyoza weaponize the cargo” could mean, to how hard Emori is winning this breakup. Our first two fairly modest nitpicks of the season came into play this week – we’re not wild about the narrative failing to pick a lane with Becho, and Claire would like to see Harper with a little more plot agency – but everything else is still so fantastic that we’re perfectly willing to give those cakes a little more time in the oven and we still have faith they’ll be satisfying in the end. For those of you who like it when we get existential, we spent about twenty minutes talking about religion; for those of you who like it when we’re complete garbage, stand by later this week for an outtake where we lose our shit over William Miller tweeting at Claire that he refers to that gun as “the strap-on.” Okay team, let’s do this thing. The power of rumor… Balak had not only heard of what terrible acts Isra'el had committed in destroying the ‘Emori, according to the first verse of our Torah portion, he also saw it! Did he witness it firsthand? Perhaps. Perhaps he saw the aftermath of the campaign and did the mental math. Whatever the case, the fame and reputation of HaShem was becoming more and more known among the tribes of Kena’an (Canaan). The offspring of Avraham was gaining a name for themselves: “the dreadful people who have come out of Egypt”. Indeed, the LORD was working mightily among them! But our opening sequence has Balak, king of Mo’av (Moab) seeking a way to destroy these seemingly unstoppable and numerous people. Based on his observation of their might (because of their sheer numbers), he decides that a military campaign is futile. Therefore, he decides to fight fire with fire: he hires the top pagan prophet of his day, Bil’am (Balaam). Now Bil’am was a peculiar man. Here is a prophet who hears, converses and knows the ineffable name of HaShem! Yet, he does not follow the ways of HaShem’s Torah. How can this be? Occasionally in the Torah, to our seeming dismay, God actually converses with unbelieving pagans. In these dialogues we catch a glimpse of the incredible nature of our God in his dealing not only with the Jewish Nation, but with other people groups as well. I believe that even the greedy Bil’am could have found a place in the community of God’s Called-out ones, but as we shall see, he chose a different course for himself. The power of blessing… Balak sends messengers to Bil’am, with a request for Bil’am to pronounce a curse upon the blessed. Bil’am, at first, entertains the notion, and takes the matter before HaShem. The Holy One reminds him of the foolishness of such a request, and forbids him from pronouncing any such curse. But the messengers of Balak are soon found returning to Bil’am with a second similar request, backed by a more hefty reward upon Bil’am’s success. At this point Bil’am begins to make his mistakes. He, knowing that HaShem has forbidden him to curse the people, conveys this information again to the messengers, but then proceeds to find another way around HaShem’s apparent final answer. Why is Bil’am double-minded? Here is the revelation of his greedy nature. I believe that the increased reward was actually beginning to appeal to him, and an abuse of his relationship with HaShem might indeed secure for him the praise of Balak. HaShem does something rather peculiar to Bil’am. He grants him permission to go with the men this time, provided he only does what HaShem specifically tells him to do. But HaShem, who sees the heart of all men, instead sees greedy gain in Bil’am’s heart as he quickly saddles his own donkey and heads out the next morning. This is upsetting to HaShem. Left to his own devices, Bil’am will not follow the instructions of the LORD, but will rather follow his own baser nature and seek the wealth offered by Balak. So the God of all circumstances decided to alter Bil’am’s plans. He sends an angelic messenger to sway Bil’am from following through with his greedy plan. The angel finally succeeding in gaining the attention of Bil’am, through his miraculous talking donkey, informs Bil’am that his plans are not good ones, but are in fact opposite those of HaShem! Amidst this whole transaction, I am amazed that Bil’am does not even think it an incredible thing to have a conversation with a donkey! Such is the blindness of material lust. Even the incredible seems dull in comparison to our own heart of greed. It took the supernatural hand of ADONAI to open the eyes of Bil’am.
