Confidence can be a powerful trait, but it doesn't always translate to genuine ability. Season 5, Episode 12 Guest: Jason Dunn, CEO, National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals Are leaders making decisions that will build a brighter future? Jason Dunn, CEO of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals, discusses how leaders can navigate the balance between addressing immediate challenges and preparing their organizations for a sustainable, future-focused success.
As a leader, balancing kindness and empathy with being tough is one of the hardest challenges you'll face. If you're too empathetic, people may take advantage of your good nature, driven by their own self-interests. But if you're too ruthless, you risk creating a culture that feels cold and uninspiring. The key is finding a balance between being firm and setting clear boundaries while also encouraging and supporting others. It's a constant struggle, but embracing this balance is what ultimately defines your leadership and the impact you make.
Are you ready to jump in on a journey where silicon meets synapses, and algorithms dance with gut feelings? Buckle up, because we're about to dive into the wild world of AI in leadership, where the robots are our friends (mostly), and the humans still get to keep their corner offices (for now). Picture this: You're drowning in a sea of spreadsheets, your to-do list is longer than War and Peace, and your team is giving you those "please save us from this administrative abyss" puppy dog eyes. Enter AI, your new digital sidekick! It's like having a super-efficient intern who never needs coffee breaks or complains about the office temperature. But wait, before you start planning your extended vacation, remember that AI is more R2-D2 than C-3PO - great at tasks, not so great at understanding why Karen from accounting always cries during budget meetings. So, how do we strike that perfect balance between embracing our new robot overlords (ahem, assistants) and maintaining that irreplaceable human touch? It's simple: we adapt, we learn, and we keep our sense of humor intact. Think of AI as that overeager friend who's always ready to help move furniture - incredibly useful, but you wouldn't trust them to rearrange your entire house. The key is to stay curious, keep learning, and remember that at the end of the day, it's still us humans who get to decide whether the office plants should be real or artificial. Time to tune in in and learn how to lead in this brave new world where bits and bytes meet handshakes and high-fives!

Send us a Text Message.Should divorced individuals hold leadership positions within the church? Join us on this profound episode of the Jordan and Kristen Rickards show, where we tackle this pressing question head-on. Kristen opens with a heartfelt prayer for wisdom and peace, setting a reflective atmosphere for our discussion. We delve into the complex realities of divorce, drawing a crucial distinction between those who initiate it and those thrust into it by circumstances like abuse or abandonment. Kristen emphasizes the need for a period of restoration and healing before assuming leadership roles, while Jordan offers his perspective as a divorce attorney, highlighting that victims of abusive marriages shouldn't be barred from leadership after suitable healing. Both agree that elective divorces for non-emergency reasons, such as midlife crises, require a different consideration for leadership roles. Moreover, we explore the delicate balance of grace, accountability, and leadership within Christian communities. By delving into Jesus' teachings on marriage and divorce, we stress the importance of accountability in church leadership, but also the necessity of grace and forgiveness. Through real-life examples of influential Christian leaders who have experienced divorce, we assert that repentance and personal growth are essential for anyone aspiring to leadership. We also touch on the challenges of setting church policies and the critical importance of leading by example to uphold moral standards. Play-fuelled Leadership: Balancing AI and Education with Geoff Stead Commenting about the PAUSE, PLAY, CONNECT Ⓡ philosophy 'What is widely established is a good thing for those busy professionals with manically stressed out lives as you were describing is to find a way of partitioning your day up or having a time when you sort of reflect and plan on what's coming. It's really bad practice to rush into the next day and it is important to stop and pause and reflect a little bit - which is the pause. Lots of people, I know who succeed at senior levels in the workplace meditate and have other practices like breath holding practices, yoga, which is perhaps not quite play, but creates a moment when you disassociate from the work you need to do. I think my takeaway I'm having is that I need to have more active time to be more playful in my day-to-day. At work I'm a bit playful, it's common that we arrange hack days and include moments of creativity. Change the pace or mood in a meeting by getting everyone to stand up and move. Having levels of goofiness. Helps to lower levels of stress and get stuff done so I'd like to mix these things into the day, and it makes me feel more human.' About Geoff: Geoff is a digital product leader. He builds the teams and shapes the vision for the next generation of EdTech innovation. A technology optimist, he's a deep believer in the power of diverse, creative human teams. Can leaders truly balance the drive for high performance with the human need for purpose and connection in the workplace? This week I'm talking with Nick Hobson, a PhD and Managing Director of North America for Influence at Work. We delve into the intricacies of behavioral science and its practical applications in the workplace. It's a discussion on the evolution of work and the human desire for purpose, autonomy, and collaboration, a deep dive into understanding human behavior and motivation. A key theme is the research and science behind paradoxical leadership, balancing people and performance, and the necessity of self-awareness and reflection for leaders. This puts to bed the false dichotomy between focusing on people or performance, advocating for a both-and approach to leadership. Our conversation also touches on the research-backed benefits of diverse and inclusive teams, the power of pausing to gain perspective, and the potential of experimentation within organizations. This conversation will be valuable for any leader seeking to navigate the complexities of the modern workforce balancing both satisfaction and productivity. On July 2, 2020 patrol officers attempted to contact a suspect about moving an illegally parked automobile at the Three Rivers Mobile Home Park in Hastings, MN. As officers spoke to the suspect's wife and two of his four children the suspect locked and barricaded the door to his trailer with his other two children inside. Over the course of the next 15 hours, in sweltering heat, the South Metro SWAT Team, in conjunction with Washington County SWAT, and Ramsey County SWAT, attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the crisis as the suspects mental state deteriorated. Although they were able to obtain one of the two children, it started to become clear that a tactical intervention would be necessary. My guests today are Adam Tschida, Daniel Salmey, and Jeff Hanson from South Metro SWAT to discuss the case, their successful HRT intervention, and the lessons learned from a very challenging rescue. Welcome to MM# 209 of the Theory to Action podcast, where we're exploring Humility and its dichotomies with Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, authors of The Dichotomy of Leadership: Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to Lead and Win. We have a great conversation planned so let's dive in and learn more about the power of humility as a critical leadership tool!Key Points from the Episode:Every leader needs to take charge and make tough decisions for the good of the team and mission.Humility is one of the hardest virtues to attain, but it can be attained through persistence over time ultimately though it is a life-long pursuit.Humility is neither passivity nor prideful; rather it lies somewhere in between these two extremes.Other resources:More goodnessGet our top book recommendations listWant to leave a review? We don't learn without failing." "You can't have the wins without losses." "Things happen for a reason in your life. That failure, that loss, that setback, whatever it is, is setting you up for something if you pay attention and you take action towards it as you go." "You can knock me down. You can do all kinds of stuff to me. But what I have over time, over and over and over, is I get back up." "Pain is just feedback along the way. It's just an indicator of where you are. And it gives you feedback on where you need to make adjustments. Listening to that pain and then making adjustments is a sign of maturity. That's how we move through life." "Too many of us let our emotions guide us versus the standards that we've set. So when you choose standards over your feelings, life becomes easy." "Proximity is power. And, who you're around is gonna shape you." "If you see somebody who looks like a great leader, but there's no fruit from that, there aren't other leaders coming out of that's somebody who likes the spotlight." "You can't just create other leaders. You need to create other leaders that are creating other leaders, and it continues to trickle through. That's how you create organizations that are healthy and vibrant, and people are attracted to." "A lot of times, you just don't need more people. You just need to have deeper connections and relationships with the people that you already have in your life." Jocko Willink's 'Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual' (2020) is a helpful follow-up to his other co-authored works - 'Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win' (2015), and 'The Dichotomy of Leadership: Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to Lead and Win' (2018). In it, he drives home and further explains concepts which bear repeating and emphasis. For instance, consider the phrase "discipline equals freedom." Why would that be true, and what can we do about it? Or for another example, how important is keeping our own selfish pride in check to being able to work together and collaborate with others on projects and in teams? The short answer is that whether we lead or are striving to understand better those who lead us, these are worthwhile books to add to the library in pursuit of greater faithfulness and effectiveness. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

“You wanted to kill your father in order to be your father yourself. Now you are your father, but a dead father.” -Sigmund Freud “Your son is gone. He was weak and foolish like his father and so I destroyed him.” – Kylo Ren Once again, the Red Taped bros found themselves becalmed in the doldrums of summer. Despite valiant efforts, the Navy SEALs could not salvage our voyage of redemption and the core beliefs that once served as our ballast violently shifted leaving us adrift. This week we break up with the Navy SEAL management/self-help genre. We also find Aristotle’s wisdom hidden in a table-saw, drown our broken hearts in rum and Cuban food, find the delicate balance of The Dilbert Principle and Extreme Ownership, and reminisce about our first sticky-fumbling catastrophe of a pilot episode. The father-wounds run deep this episode, as we detach from our dominant podcasting daddies and set a new course into uncharted waters. Please join us as we navigate a messy break-up and discuss The Dichotomy of Leadership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. “I’ve never been happier than I am ever since I embraced change.” — John Johnson Many of us prefer the easy path. We find comfort in things that we already understand. When things change too quickly, we tend to go back to the way things were. Change doesn't always feel good. It makes us uncomfortable, but it's essential because the world around us is ever-changing. Our fear of trying something new from what we're used to prevents us from growing and reaching our full potential. You can't always stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to reach you. You have to go out and take the initiative sometimes. But how do you get comfortable with change? How do you get okay with being uncomfortable? Here's the thing, we'll never feel comfortable at all times. That's why we need to push our boundaries a little bit. John Johnson, an Employee Benefits Consultant at USI, is here to help you shift yourself into that discomfort zone. Today's episode focuses on helping you help yourself be more comfortable with being uncomfortable. In this episode, you will learn about: Why encourage people to be comfortable with being uncomfortable John Johnson’s personal journey with being uncomfortable Taking a break and being mindful Looking for things that challenge you How we become the average of who we hang around One of the best gifts you can give someone Asking for permission when you’re afraid and uncertain Things you can do to make someone feel comfortable when they’re uncomfortable What drew John to the topic of being okay with being uncomfortable and why it matters Practices that makes John feel confident How John gets people to embrace change The first step in talking with people Why your words and approach matters a lot Getting comfortable with conflict John’s role at USI Connect with John: LinkedIn Enroll in Xenium's e-Learning Courses Connect with Us: What did you think of this episode? The importance of balance as a leader by the number-one New York Times best-selling authors of Extreme Ownership. Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy - a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin explained in their best-selling first audiobook, Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy”. Now, in The Dichotomy of Leadership, the authors explain the power inherent in the recognition of the fine line that leaders must walk, balancing between two seemingly opposite inclinations. It is with the knowledge and understanding of this balance that a leader can most effectively lead, accomplish the mission, and achieve the goal of every leader and every team: victory. Using examples from the authors' combat and training experience in the SEAL Teams and then showing how each lesson applies to business and in life, Willink and Babin reveal how the use of seemingly opposite principles - leading and following, focusing and detaching, being both aggressive and prudent - require skill, awareness, understanding, and dexterity, all attributes that can be honed. These dichotomies are inherent in many of the concepts introduced in Extreme Ownership and integral to their proper implementation and effectiveness. Dichotomy is essential listening for anyone looking to lead and win.

Jocko Willink (@jockowillink) rejoins us to discuss his latest book, The Dichotomy of Leadership: Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to Lead and Win. What We Discuss with Jocko Willink: What happens when we take the "extreme" part of extreme ownership too literally. Why otherwise positive characteristics can be detrimental to progress when we forget the importance of balance. When to take responsibility, and what the limits of this actually are. Why we should stop being the easy button for those we manage and lead. The concept of leadership capital: how to build it, when to use it, and when not to use it. And much more...
