You felt like you were standing on shaky ground, wondering if you would get hijacked, or trampled underfoot. Who would of known that no matter how long it took, eventually you would become a shining star.
Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd
After parting ways with their rambunctious older drummer Gary Young, slacker-gods Pavement followed a promising run of EP's and a killer debut album (heavily indebted to English post-punk bands like The Fall and Swell Maps) with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - a wry sunstroken take on 70's classic rock through the lens of the American independent underground. Featuring their biggest hits Cut Your Hair and Gold Soundz, Stephen Malkmus and his crew cemented themselves on this record as the zeitgeist-riding stars of the ironic indie age. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is also #424 on the Greatest Albums of All Time list by Rolling Stone, which means Liam Withnail and Christopher Macarthur-Boyd have listened to it, and now they're going to talk about it. Featuring digressions on Fopp, Purple Rain, Metallica, Modest Mouse, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, and the beef between Stormzy and Wiley from a few years ago. Featuring Secret Posho, Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo and YouTube Comment of the Week, this is Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

New! Become a TRUTH IN RHYTHM Member at https://www.patreon/truthinrhythm. Featured in TIR Episode 186, Part 2 of 2: Guitarist, singer, composer and producer Clarence “Chet” Willis, he of one of the greatest funk-soul bands of all time -- the mighty Ohio Players! Beginning in 1975 he became a mainstay with the group, trading guitar licks with the legendary Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner and joining keyboardist Billy Beck and drummer James “Diamond” Williams, both of whom have also been TRUTH IN RHYTHM guests, on backing vocals. Willis, Beck and Williams later formed the spinoff band called Shadow, and all of them more recently have been performing as today’s version of the Ohio Players. While The Ohio Players’ roots stretch back to the late 1950s, it wasn’t until “Funky Worm” hit No. 1 on the R&B chart in early 1973 that the group got a taste of major success. They would go on to notch four more chart-toppers, with two of those songs also making No. 1 on the pop chart. A move to Mercury Records saw the band refining its sound to the signature millions would love. It was marked by stronger songwriting and pristine production, inventive arrangements, the distinctive lead vocals of highly influential, one-of-a-kind talent Sugarfoot, as well as his nimble guitar playing, the falsetto background singing of Diamond and Beck, as well as the latter’s brilliant keyboard work and, of course, the former’s progressive and impeccable drumming. Beck replaced enigmatic genius Walter “Junie” Morrison, who would go on to release eclectic solo albums and become a key contributor to Parliament-Funkadelic during the late 1970s. Add to that intoxicating aural mix, Marshall Jones’ rumbling bass, and horn players Ralph “Pee Wee” Middlebrooks, Marvin “Merv” Pierce and bandleader Clarence “Satch” Satchell, and last but not least Willis' guitar work and vocals, and you have the unmistakable magical funk perfection that was mid-1970s Ohio Players. Essential to their indelible sound and consistency was how self-contained of a unit they were, writing, arranging, producing and performing everything themselves. As if all that was not enough of a seduction, The Ohio Players were also famous for their sexy and provocative album covers showing young ladies in various stages of undress. The Ohio Players’ creative and commercial peak took place from 1974-1977 when they unleashed the gold- or platinum-selling albums Skin Tight, Fire, Honey, Contradiction and Angel. During that time they were considered the biggest or close to the biggest funk or R&B band in the world -- rivaled only by the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament-Funkadelic, WAR, Kool & the Gang, The Isley Brothers and The Commodores. The Ohio Players’ hits and classics include “Skin Tight,” “Jive Turkey,” “Heaven Must Be Like This,” “Fire,” “I Want to Be Free,” “Runnin’ From the Devil,” “Smoke,” “Love Rollercoaster,” “Fopp,” “Let’s Love,” “Sweet Sticky Thing,” “Who’d She Coo?”, “Far East Mississippi,” “Contradiction,” “Angel,” “Body Vibes,” “O-H-I-O,” “Merry Go Round,” “Funk-O-Nots” and “Take De Funk Off, Fly.” While Sugar continued to record under the Ohio Players name in the 1980s, Diamond, Beck and Willis splintered off to form Shadow. They released three albums for Elektra Records between 1979-1981. The last one, Shadows in the Streets, is worth seeking out for slick funk cuts like “Born to Hustle” and “Sinister Way.” The trio reunited with Sugar for an Ohio Players comeback album called Back in 1988. That would be the group’s final studio album to date, but varying lineups would keep bringing the Players’ unique brand of funk to stages for performances that continue to this day, led by Diamond, Willis and Beck. Here, Willis discusses his approach to guitar, the secret sauce that made The Ohio Players so special, unforgettable memories, band member talents and personalities, the group’s catchy new single, “Reset,” and impending album, and stage show. David walks us through his ideas that Futures projects should be seen to do something in the real world and that he believes that now is the time for a FOPP - a Future Orientated Political Party. He believes that we lack high quality images of possible futures and so he is about finding a language for futures literacy.
Well shit, looks like the Budlight Blight fucked up our schedule and made us not create an episode for half a year. At least this comeback episode will be our deepest, most complex yet, right?Eh, not really. Instead, we kinda try a different route to sorta explain the feel and emotion overall of the album instead of talking about the various tracks. Something short and sweet, y'know?Seriously, we promise the next episode will be much longer.

Welcome, everyone to Krzysztof Kieślowski Club. The first rule of Krzysztof Kieślowski Club is, of course, never spell club with a 'K', as it attracts entirely the wrong sort of clientele, and I'm not talking about Mortal Kombat fans. For me at least, the Polish director was very much part of baby's first attempt at cinephiling, as I approached the world cinema section in Fopp with a student loan burning its way through my back pocket. Those Three Colours DVDs were then lovingly put on a shelf, and I went off and watched Aliens again, or Violent Cop, or all the other nonsense I've subjected myself to. Twenty years and numerous shelves later, those DVDs remain unwatched, but that changes now. Well, technically it doesn't as couldn't be bothered finding the DVDs and just downloaded them, but that aside, we're looking at six of Kieślowski's films to see if he is all that and a bag of potato chips.

They also touch on Friday 13th The Game which is THE BEST. Truly a throwback to a Terrible Interview! A huge thanks to the providers of prizes Dark Bunny Tees & The Prince Charles Cinema. We were so proud to be able to give away some Edgar-inspired shirts and Baby Driver merch, as well as a haul of DVDs and blu Rays. Dead chuffed with it all. Grand pianos: The soft pedal is used to change the mood of the sound from percussive to more serene and gentle when the soft pedal is depressed. It should not be used solely for producing a softer sound because it will also change the timbre. In order to play pianissimo, you will just have to [...]
Practice any new piece without the pedal HS, then HT, until you can play it comfortably HT at final speed. This is a critically important method of practice that all good teachers use with all their students. It may seem difficult, at first, to practice musically without the pedal where it is needed; however, this [...]
Bad habits are the worst time-wasters in piano practice. Most bad habits are caused by stress from practicing pieces HT, that are too difficult. Many of the bad habits from HT practice are difficult to diagnose, which makes them that much more dangerous. Clearly, the best defense against bad habits is HS practice. Non-musical play [...]
“Endurance” is a controversial term in piano practice. This controversy originates from the fact that piano playing requires control, not muscle power, and many students have the wrong impression that they will not acquire technique until they grow enough muscles.
