Dennis and Denise have a budget-friendly show tonight, with each wine costing less than $10. Also, see if you can catch ten references to different songs.Tonight we will have a Picpoul from the South of France. This is a new wine for us. Picpoul (Pronounced peek–pool) Means "stings the lips" is grown mostly in the Languedoc in southern France around the Mediterranean. It was rewarded its own AOC in 2013, and its popularity has grown considerably in the past 15 years. This wine pairs great with seafood or spicey dishes or for a summer sipper. Our second wine is from the Columbia Valley in Washington. This is the State's largest wine region. It is an arid region that receives lots of sunshine during the growing season (more than Napa Valley). It also has some cooler weather that gives the grapes good acidity. Our final wine is a Le Grand Noir Chardonnay from France. This is a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) wine from the Pays D'Oc. The wine is a 85% Chardonnay and 15% Viognier blend. Unlike other French wines, PGI wines are allowed to list the variety of grape. Tonight, our three wines include:2023 Foncastel Picpoul De Pinet, purchased at Trader Joe's for $8.99. Reverse Wine Snob rated it a buy. It has 13% alcohol. Mostly citrus on the nose. Lemon and lime smell. Palate is more acidic and also has some salinity. 2022 Pacific Rim Riesling, we purchased at Costco for $7.89. The wine comes from the Columbia Valley in Washington. The Wine Enthusiast rated it a 90. The grapes are picked early, so has good acid and then bottled with 25.2 g/l of residual sugar. Pairs well with with spicey Asian or Mexican food. 2022 Le Grand Noir Chardonnay. We purchased this wine from Costco for $9.99. It is made with 85% Chardonnay and 15% Viogneir. 30% of the Chardonnay spends sometime in French and American Oak. The wine maker said they wanted to make a lightly oaked Chardonnay that was drinkable alone and pairs well with food. Pair with seafood or white meats. Wine Enthusiast rated it a 92 and gave it a "Best Buy".Next week we will have something a little different. It's Denise's birthday, and to celebrate, we will have ice wine and birthday cake. The two wines we will taste include: 2023 North Wind Vidal Ice Wine. We purchased it at Costco for $19.99. NV Cooper's Hawk Lux Ice Wine that was purchased at Cooper's Hawk for $29.99.

Let's take a look at Dixon Dedman's most affordable of the 2XO (two times oak) brand, "American Oak," a whiskey which is finished a second time in HIGHLY charred barrels. Double oak or double barrel finishes have been very popular in recent years, but often the results are mixed. So much flavor is derived from the barrel, that adding a NEW freshly charred barrel to the mix can greatly affect the flavor profile, and in some instances add too much. There's also the issue with heavily flavored second barrels which essentially render the base liquid null and void because it transfers the whiskey into a sickly sweet version of itself. So, what's up with Dedman's American Oak? For starters the nose is candy corn sweet with a touch of menthol and cassis, nothing over-oaked at all, but pleasantly sweet to smell. On the palate the 92 proof spirit presents as sweet initially followed by rye spice, then oak spice. The finish is medium long, but the chewy sweet oak mid-palate is where this whiskey really shines. More than middle of the road, this really is fantastic juice that shouldn't be overlooked.

Howdy folks here is the episode with Mia at Jt Meleck. This was a great Story and Mia is on fire for her brand. She brings excitment in big ways to rice whiskey hope you enjoy. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 Z.SmithWhiskeyandMixology Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Jtmeleck.com One family, one farm, one great idea… It begins in 1896, when John Meleck had the crazy idea to grow his 1st rice on 20 acres of marshland in s. Louisiana. Against the odds, the name J.T. Meleck became synonymous with Louisiana rice, but to us he is great, great uncle John. Five generations later we still grow rice – and now crawfish – on the same 20 acres as our Uncle John. We've grown since then but we are still as connected to the dirt as J.T. Meleck. I began thinking, what if we could make a great spirit from our rice? It would make our Uncle John proud. The result is something truly special. It's American Rice, born right here on our farm, just off hwy 35 in Branch, LA. We´re proud to take our rice from grain to bottle. We work the dirt and grow the seed, just like Uncle John did. That's why we've named it J.T. Meleck. Because our crazy idea has managed to create a whole new Louisiana classic. One that goes straight from our farm to your front porch.  We present to you In 2018, J.T. Meleck Distillers launched it's Louisiana Rice Vodka made 100% from the rice we harvest on our farm in Branch, Louisiana. This rice spirit reaches 191 proof in the distillation process, and then brought down to 80 proof for consumption. A clear spirit with a touch of sweetness on the nose and slight vanilla characteristics on the palate. Beautiful viscosity and a clean spirit. Released in 2022, this is J.T. Meleck's staple and long talked about American Rice Whiskey. Aged in new American oak barrels for almost 5 years our whiskey is amber in color and deep in intensity. J.T. Meleck's Single Barrel Program was launched in October of 2022 with picks dropping at Nunu's Market and Champagnes Market in Lafayette, LA. We decided to launch this program after discovering that some barrels were not like the others. They were meant to be enjoyed separately. Whether it be the nose, flavor or finish, we knew these barrels were special and need to be shared with our fans. Select groups or retailers are invited to our distillery for a tour & tasting where they choose a barrel that will become their single barrel pick. Each pick varies in flavor, yield and proof, making each bottle unique. No barrel is the same so each single barrel pick is its own experience. Personalized stickers are present on each bottle identifying the group or retailer who picked, the bottle number, barrel number, proof and ABV. Aged 4-5 years in new American Oak 53-gallon barrels with proofs having ranged from 118.2-123.9 Our Founder's Edition was the first ever soft launch of our American Rice whiskey in November of 2021. Aged in 30-gallon barrels for 4 years, this small batch release yielded only 1000 bottles at 96-proof. An explosion of vanilla and charred oak on the nose creating a smoky chocolate taste. Dixon Dedman, founder of 2XO - "Two Times Oak" Whiskey, joins us today to explain why his award-winning blends will, in the words of Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel, "Take it to Eleven!" "Two Times Oak" is a blending process Dixon pioneered, where he re-barrels his hand-selected aged whiskey into new charred oak barrels. The result is intense wood notes and extraordinarily rich, complex flavors. Will these blends take it to 10? Well, sure. But sometimes you need.. "one more!" What makes 2XO 'American Oak' Special: The first of the "Oak" series with an innovative double oak technique. Dixon introduces additional charred oak to barrels with a moderate amount of rye in the mashbill. American Oak moves from sweet, rich butterscotch on the front, to savory roasted nutty notes in the middle, finishing with a lingering mild spice. It is very approachable and perfect for cocktails. Dixon Dedman has been turning heads for years as a blender using innovative techniques for adding flavor and complexity to his robust bourbon and rye blends. Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens   Full Details from Oak & Eden: Oak & Eden's proprietary In-Bottle Finishing technique was just the start of the founders' vision. Rooted by the innovative spire, the brand developed Whiskey Customizer, becoming the first national spirit brand to offer single bottle customization for the masses. Whether you're an avid whiskey fan wanting to experiment or looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, Whiskey Customizer has a little something for everyone. To kick off the experience, customers are invited to build their custom bottle by selecting a desired whiskey base out of Bourbon, Four Grain Bourbon, Wheated Bourbon or Rye. Each base has been aged a minimum of three years. All four whiskey bases are available in 90 proof and 114 proof. After selecting the base and proof, builders may then choose the preferred wooden spire to be infused or inserted into the base with no infusion. Wood options include an American Oak spire, lending a sweet and toasty finish, or a French Oak spire, lending a floral and peppery finish. Builders can also select their spire to be infused with Coffee, Vanilla, Grapefruit Liqueur, Orange Liqueur, Pineapple Liqueur, Blackberry Liqueur, Cabernet, Port Wine, Rum, Honey, or Maple Syrup which is then inserted into the bottle. Oak & Eden plans to add to its infusion options, introducing seasonal and limited l-batch options quarterly, making the possibilities with Whiskey Customizer truly limitless. As a final step, customers can make the bottle theirs by personalizing the label or adding someone else's as a great gifting option. Shipping is available nationwide! We recommend that the bottle sit for 3 weeks after arrival to guarantee that the in-bottle finishing process has been fully completed. But that's not their style. This unique spirit was born the hard way, with time leading to full maturation. The story of this spirit is as much about the barrel itself as the RallyPoint Rye Whiskey that went into it.This whiskey started life being distilled twice, then aging in a charred American Oak barrel from right here in Missouri. At this point, it was well on its way to becoming another standout Single Barrel of our RallyPoint Rye Whiskey. They intentionally select a barrel that has special traits and ideal flavors to compliment the finishing barrel. This special barrel they use to add delicious flavors and nuance to their RallyPoint changes from batch to batch. However, they use one of their own old bourbon barrels that was used a second time to age actual maple syrup. When it is emptied after this second fill, they  fill it with a hand-picked barrel of mature RallyPoint. Time alone dictates the length of maturation in the finishing barrel. No age statement on the rye or on the finishing. Support the showWebsite:www.whiskeychaserspod.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/whiskeychaserspodcastInsta:https://www.instagram.com/whiskeychaserspodcast/TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@whiskeychaserspodcastThanks For Listening! Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens   From their June 2022 Press Release: Hotaling & Co. is proud to announce the relaunch of the legendary whiskey brand, Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey, credited as the first American Craft Whiskey to hit the market since prohibition. The Old Potrero relaunch will feature new packaging and bottle design geared towards today's contemporary whiskey drinker, who appreciates an excellent dram with an iconic heritage and a modern-day appeal. Originally created by Fritz Maytag, the beverage visionary and founder of Hotaling & Co., (formerly Anchor Distilling Co.), Old Potrero Rye Whiskey is a bold homage to the original artisanal whiskies of America, a testament to the power of the pioneering spirit and the celebrated return of pot-distilled whiskey in the United States. Since 1994, the whiskey has been distilled in small copper pot stills at the San Francisco-based distillery, and in 2010 was passed down to current Master Distiller, Bruce Joseph, who has worked alongside Fritz since the first barrels were laid in the early 90's. “We are thrilled to usher Old Potrero into a new era,” says Master Distiller, Bruce Joseph. "With the same bold liquid within, Old Potrero's new packaging and bottle embody the boldness of its home-base, San Francisco. A city that's resilient, creative and richly historic, just like Old Potrero.” The new packaging redesign, created by design agency Stranger & Stranger, features a dark wooden top with a natural cork stopper stamped with Old Potrero branding for a premium craft feel. The bottle's perforated edges and ticket-style copy holding devices connect back to the historic cable cars of San Francisco. And the new label features the same copper pot still used at the distillery since its inception as well as one of the world's most celebrated and iconic sights – The Golden Gate Bridge. The font, Fog City Gothic, is used throughout the label as a nod to the type used on signage seen throughout San Francisco. “The bottle's design was inspired by the juxtaposition of San Francisco's architecture, between the past and the present,” says Luis Rivas Ball, Senior Brand Lead American Whiskeys at Hotaling and Co. “From the perforated edges and ticket-style holding devices that connect back to the cable cars to the copper pot still and Golden Gate Bridge in the logo, Old Potrero is a true representation of San Francisco.” Although the brand is launching a bold and eye-catching new design, what's inside will remain unchanged – the same award winning 100% malted rye whiskey, now aged longer for added smoothness and complexity. Highlights on the Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey 6 years-old and the Old Potrero Old Single Barrel 100% Malted Rye Whiskey are as follows: Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey 6-Year-Old (SRP $64.99) marked the official return of pot distilled rye whiskey to the US. Distilled from a 100% malted rye mash bill in the same copper post still since the 1990's, the liquid is then matured in new, charred, 24-month air dried, extra-fine grain, American white oak barrels for a minimum of six years. Tasting notes include brown sugar, black cherry, spice, and maple with a nutty finish, satisfying the enthusiast' desire for bolder flavors and higher strength whiskeys. The Old Potrero Single Barrel Rye Whiskey (SRP $89.99) is aged in extra fine grain American Oak. The wood is air dried for 24 months and the barrels are fully toasted and charred by hand over an oak fire. The mash of 100% malted rye is fermented for four days and then double distilled in traditional copper pot whiskey stills. This expression is slated to debut in later 2022. About Old Potrero Old Potrero Rye Whiskey is a testament to the power of the pioneering spirit and the celebrated return of pot- distilled whiskey in the United States. Created by Fritz Maytag, the same beverage visionary who sparked the craft beer movement with his purchase of Anchor Brewing in 1965 and the founder of the original Anchor Distilling Co., now Hotaling & Co., Old Potrero is credited as the first American craft whiskey to hit the market since Prohibition. It is distilled in a small copper pot still at the Hotaling & Co. Distillery on San Francisco's Potrero Hill Farm from a mash of 100% rye malt, with rye being the grain of choice for America's first distillers. About Hotaling & Co. Hotaling & Co., the leading San Francisco importer & distiller, offers the finest curated portfolio of premium artisanal spirits including Luxardo Liqueurs, Nikka Whisky, Kavalan Whisky, HINE Cognac, Denizen Rum, and HIRSCH Selected Whiskeys. Hotaling & Co., originally named Anchor Distilling Company, was established in 1993 and is credited with releasing America's first craft whiskey (Old Potrero) and American craft gin (Junipero Gin) after Prohibition. In 2010, Anchor Distilling Company was sold to a business partnership that included Tony Foglio and London's oldest wine and spirit merchant, Berry Bros. & Rudd and began expanding to incorporate a collection of super-premium artisanal spirits imported from around the world. In 2017, Anchor Distilling became Hotaling &Co. The new name is a nod to one of Anchor Distilling's most beloved small batch whiskies (Old Potrero Hotaling's Whiskey) and to the San Francisco legend A.P. Hotaling, who came out West during the Gold Rush and quickly became one of the most reputable spirits dealers in the country. Today, Hotaling & Co. celebrates exciting growth and achievements, marking its 26th year of distilling and its 10th year of commercially uniting artisan distillers from around the world and sharing their stories to discerning consumers.  For more details about Old Potrero please visit OldPotrero.com or HotalingandCo.com.

About the Topic: “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure  their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father whose in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18 Jesus says “when you fast” not “if you fast”. He expected us to fast. But we should not fast out of dieting or pride, but out of love of God.  Fasting improves us spiritually in several ways (from https://jimmyakin.com/ (Jimmy Akin)): We express our recognition that spiritual things are more important than physical things. We learn to deny ourselves pleasures, even in spite of pain. (Increase in fortitude) We declare that we recognize the need to reform and to get closer to God. We willingly embrace the hunger fasting produces as a sign of being willing to shoulder the burdens of others (Col. 1:24 - “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is Lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church…”). What is lacking: Christ's sufferings were, of course, sufficient for our redemption, but all of us may add ours to his, in order that the fruits of his redemption be applied to the souls of men.  We express humility before God by adopting a humble posture, recognizing our dependence on him and affirming our submissiveness to his will. 4 classes of penitents who committed major sins (idolatry, murder, abortion, adultery) in the ancient formal penitential discipline: Weepers - Not allowed in the church but stayed outside and asked those going in to pray for them. Hearers - Stood inside the church doors and heard the liturgy of the word but were dismissed before the liturgy of the Eucharist. Kneelers - knelt or lay down in... Support this podcast

We are joined by Alastair Brogan, Founder and Owner, and Ryan Negley, Lead Ambassador and Whiskey Fellow for Boulder Spirits by Vapor Distillery. We learn about the Scottish influence that Alastair brought to Colorado and American Single Malt while still finding a unique niche in the American Whiskey Category, including their high-malt bourbons. Boulder Spirits features the largest pot still in the state of Colorado which adds an impressive layer of complexity to their whiskies as does their usage of new charred oak casks for their American Single Malts.  We had the opportunity to taste through several of their high-malt bourbons and American Single Malts and a few of their forthcoming 5 year old releases.   Be sure to check out the new Adventure Kits by Boulder Spirits to get an amazing selection of high-malt bourbons and American Single Malts. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens   The Mission of Boulder Spirits: Barley, yeast, water, oak, and the pursuit of happiness. These make up the foundation of what we here at Boulder Spirits stand on. We're a small Colorado whiskey company with big dreams, bigger goals, and the biggest pot still in the state. We're here to make our best versions of American Single Malt Whiskeys, Bourbons, and Gins that our team can. We hope you can find us in your future, whether by visiting the distillery for a tour and tasting, or seeing our products at your favorite spirits retailers and finer whiskey serving establishments. About The Chieftain: Alastair Brogan has had a few lives: a Royal Air Force veteran, Vice President of the family business, ‘voted off' reality TV star (internet it!), world traveler, and now owner/operator of Boulder Spirits by Vapor Distillery. While Alastair certainly could have stuck to the long, brittle winters of Scotland to pursue his lifelong dream and make whiskey at home, his sense of adventure and intrigue for innovation made not only the United States, but, most accordingly, Colorado the perfect place to settle. Upon commissioning a 1,000 gallon copper pot still from the famed Forsyths (one of the oldest still makers in the world), he packed up the caravan with the family at his side and found a home in Boulder, Colorado. This is a place that breeds adventure and innovation. The Movement: Unbeknownst to Alastair during his pursuit of whiskey, an entire movement was abrew. Since the day we filled our first freshly charred, virgin American Oak barrel with malt whiskey to the day that we filled our first bottle, the American Single Malt Whiskey category was born. Around the country, as well as the world, the taste for American Whiskey has grown. The thirst for Bourbon stays strong, but this country is great at many things, and innovation is absolutely one of our greatest. This innovative mindset shared by distillers in every corner of this country has created an entirely new set of flavors to explore; these flavors all begin with one common source: 100% malted barley. Currently, there are over 130 distilleries that have ventured into the American Single Malt Whiskey realm, each with as different of an approach to creating whiskey from each other as the next. Single malt whisky is made in many, many countries around the world, but only the United States utilizes the virgin American Oak as a standard. We believe that is the truest defining characteristic of American whiskey. We take traditions from Al's homeland, along with American ingenuity to find a balance that creates award winning whiskeys: distillers malted barley, a Scottish pot still, #3 char American White Oak barrels, aged in an arid, high elevation climate, and cut with the celebrated Eldorado Springs water. This is our American Single Malt. This week on the big show, Tony and Fingers review a single malt whiskey. But this isn't at all what you would expect when you hear "single malt." On this episode, the guys review the Westland American Oak Single Malt. How will this compare to other single malts Tony and Fingers have tried in the past? Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy (http://eatdrinksmokeshow.com) host Eat! Drink! Smoke! (http://facebook.com/eatdrinksmoke) recorded live at Blend Bar Cigar (http://blendbarcigar.com) in Indianapolis, IN. Along with the Westland American Oak Single Malt, they review the Davidoff Dominicana Toro cigar. Not too long ago, hackers went after America's fuel supply by launching a cyberattack on computers that managed the Colonial Pipeline. Recently, our food supply was attacked. The world's largest meat supply company was forced to shut down slaughterhouses because of a cyberattack. How can we prevent these attacks in the future? Can we unite as a nation to come up with a solution to this problem? A lot of crazy things have recently been put up for sale/auction. A cigar butt that was discarded by Winston Churchill just sold at an auction. A chicken nugget that kinda looks like the state of Indiana was listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Just in time for holiday gifting and celebration, IZO Spirits announces the release of a premium Resposado and a Sotol more than 15 years in the making. Founded by Mexican native and Mezcal connoisseur Gaston Martinez, IZO captures the historically smooth flavor of traditionally distilled agave spirits. This season, experience the distinctive, vintage taste of a sustainably produced collection that began with an award-winning Mezcal and now includes a classic Resposado and Sotol, each handcrafted from start to finish for a true depth of flavor that honors its respected heritage. “Our Reposado is a rich, velvety tequila, made to warm the soul,” explains Martinez. “Our Sotol is the only non-agave IZO spirit - but no Mexican-inspired collection is complete without a lively, traditional Sotol.” WEB: https://www.izomezcal.com 20% OFF PROMO: izofan20 FOLLOW: @izomezcal This historic spirit is named for the local Desert Spoon (“Sotol”) from which it is crafted, with each spike-leafed, silver-blue plant producing just one precious bottle in its 15-year lifespan. Once the Desert Spoon reaches maturity, the IZO Jimadores (or “harvesters”) remove the outer leaves and extract the piña (or “heart”). The core is then slow cooked in an underground pit lined with natural lava rock and hand-selected, renewably-sourced local Oak. Next, the juice is fermented and twice distilled, producing a bright, clean IZO Sotol that complements the smoky depth and richness of IZO Mezcal. Likewise, IZO Reposado is purposefully crafted from hand-harvested local agave in a traditional process similar to the Sotol. Trained Jimadores slow-roast the wild agave piñas over natural volcanic rock, after which the distilled spirit is aged in American Oak barrels for at least two months. The result is an extraordinary bouquet of flavors and aromas - spicy vanilla, rich walnut, subtle banana, and bright green apple. Every note blends together perfectly for a smooth, softly warming experience that is characteristic of a premium quality Resposado. This holiday season, gift and gather around an exceptional pour: IZO Sotol and IZO Reposado, each traditionally distilled and beautifully preserved in artisanal bottles designed to honor its Mexican point of origin. According to Rabbit Hole, Dareringer  is a small batch release made up of no more than 15 barrels. This Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 93 proof, has no official age statement, and carries an MSRP of $80.   About our gear: More of an action this week than a gear. Build up the Advent season by taking your children out caroling! About the Topic: Straight from the Catechism of the Council of Trent: Three Things to be Avoided by Parents He should also admonish them to guard particularly against three things, in which they but too often transgress. In the first place, they are not by words or actions to exercise too much harshness towards their children. This is the instruction of St. Paul in his Epistle to the Colossians: “Fathers, he says, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. For there is danger that the spirit of the child may be broken, and he become abject and fearful of everything.” (Col. 3.21) Hence (the pastor) should 424 require parents to avoid too much severity and to choose rather to correct their children than to revenge themselves upon them. Should a fault be committed which requires reproof and chastisement, the parent should not, on the other hand, by undue indulgence, overlook its correction. Children are often spoiled by too much lenience and indulgence on the part of their parents. The pastor, therefore, should deter from such excessive mildness by the warning example of Heli, the high priest, who, on account of overindulgence to his sons, was visited with the heaviest chastisements. Finally, to avoid what is most shameful in the instruction and education of children, let them not propose to themselves aims that are unworthy. Many there are whose sole concern is to leave their children wealth, riches and an ample and splendid fortune; who encourage them not to piety and religion, or to honorable employment, but to avarice, and an increase of wealth, and who, provided their children are rich and wealthy, are regardless of their good name and eternal salvation. Can anything more shameful be thought or expressed? Of such parents it is true to say, that instead of bequeathing wealth to their children, they leave them rather their own wickedness and crimes for an inheritance; and instead of conducting them to Heaven, lead them to the eternal torments of Hell. The priest, therefore, should impress on the minds of parents salutary principles and should exhort them to imitate the virtuous example of Tobias, that having properly trained up their children to the service of God and to holiness of life, they may, in turn, experience at their hands abundant fruit of filial affection, respect and obedience. https://www.baroniuspress.com/book.php?wid=56&bid=76#tab=tab-1 (Buy the Catechism of the Council of Trent.) The podcast is joined by a certified saint in the church of oak, founder and co-owner of St. Louis' Foeder Crafters. Foeder Crafters came out of nowhere to become THE foeder fabricator in the US. We trace back to when Matt, "a maker of things", was in the early stages of opening a brewery with a Cy Young Award winner when a brewer casually asked if Matt thought he could make a giant oak vessel for him. Instead of being a brewer, Matt was catapulted down a meteoric path of both trailblazing and perfecting the craft of domestic foeder production. He talks about how the industry was simply starved for innovation, the tight-lipped and stale culture in more seasoned foeders, and laments the huge challenge of sourcing *just* the right type of oak for his tanks. Matt also explains how the endlessly challenging process of foeder building has allowed his company to effectively hold a monopoly on the industry in America, sings of the value in sucking on every piece of oak he receives, and points out the subtle but critical differences between CRAFTsmen and CRAPsmen. This way a blast of a conversation to have with one of the nicest people on Earth (unless you're competition) laden with a glut of knowledge regardless of your familiarity with the King of Wood.

There's no question that twice-barreled bourbons are becoming more popular.  However, a large majority these of bourbons are being finished in used barrels which previously contained wine, rum, or brandy.  Some, such as the two bourbons we are discussing today are finished in a second, virgin charred oak barrel. We discuss the ever-popular Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and compare it to a bourbon from growing, innovative craft distillery.  That is Starlight Distillery and their Carl T. Huber’s Indiana Straight Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey.  We discuss the "double oaked" category and how it doesn't always mean "over-oaked". Sometimes, due to the secondary barrel's characteristics, more unique flavors can be developed in a relatively short period of time. What is your favorite double oaked bourbon?  Be sure to reach out and let us know.   As always, we appreciate you giving us a 5 star rating on your podcast player of choice and be sure to leave us a written review. Cheers,Scott, Jake, and MichaelThe Bourbon Lens   About Starlight Distillery Carl T. Huber’s Indiana Straight Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey Starlight Distillery’s brand new Double Oaked project begins with a fresh blending of Carl T. bourbon that is at least 4 years old which is used to fill a second, new American Oak barrel from Seguin Moreau in Napa, California. We crafted 5 barrels for the first round of this project. 2 of these 5 barrels have already been selected as private barrel picks, one for a retailer in Washington D.C. and one for a retailer in Indianapolis. Historically, the Seguin Moreau Napa Cooperage only produced wine barrels. When the company decided to start producing bourbon barrels, Starlight Distillery became one of their first clients. For our Double Oaked project, Seguin Moreau created the Vanilla Toast barrel. Our Carl T. bourbon becomes richer, more oaky, bolder, and more flavorful in these barrels. To achieve this, the bourbon has aged for a minimum of 8 months in the barrel.” Carl T. small batch bourbon is a blend of our 3 and 4 grain mashbills (60% corn, 20% rye, 20% malted barley and 51% corn, 20% rye, 20% malted barley, 9% wheat) Source:  http://www.starlightdistillery.com/  About Woodford Reserve Double Oaked An innovative approach to twice-barreled bourbon creates the rich and colorful flavor of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Uniquely matured in separate, charred oak barrels – the second barrel deeply toasted before a light charring – extracts additional soft, sweet oak character. TASTING NOTES (From Woodford Reserve) PROOF - 90.4° APPEARANCE - Deep Amber. NOSE - Rich notes of dark fruit, caramel, sharp honey, chocolate, marzipan and toasted oak. TASTE - A full-bodied mix of vanilla, dark caramel, hazelnut, apple, fruit and spices. FINISH - Long and creamy with lingering hints of honeyed apple. We're discussing a new style of whiskey for us, American Single Malt Whiskey.  And who better to talk with than Westland Distillery, co-founders of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission.  We discuss what makes an American Single Malt Whiskey and the efforts to ratify a definition on a national level to protect the whiskey category.   We enjoyed 3 of Westland’s single malts; American Oak, Sherry Wood, and Peated.  Made from 100% barley, American Single Malt Whiskey may not share a lot of similarities with Kentucky Bourbon, but we enjoyed exploring the style. The rise in interest of the category has developed a lot of unique offerings across the country to compete with bourbon and rye whiskey. The guys make a triu--... well, a return to the solo format! They had a lot of rust to work off, but in the process, Noah recaps his trip to Philadelphia and Matt shares his experience of picking a fight with the wrong star and getting burnt/blinded as a result (seriously). On the eve of another barrel-aged Milo beer, Matty also brings up a phenomena he's noticed repeatedly in the taproom: the strong attraction most customers have towards the brewery's wooden vessels. This leads to a conversations about the overwhelming power of gin barrels, the catharsis from destroying a leaky foeder, and a classic three-bay focused around the holy trinity of carpentry, Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, Ron Swanson, and Jesus Christ himself......Instagram: @GrainingInPod.....Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Hey look, a bottle that isn't from Islay!! WHAT?! The Mortlach 18 was a purchase at the duty free in Edinburg and surprisingly enough, is no longer a core range offering. Mortlach is, much like Caol Ila, a distillery that makes more spirits for blenders (Johnny Walker) than having their own ranges. One of the most stunning bottles I own and has become a favorite of mine, which wasn't always the case. Beware the first taste trap! 2.81 distilled, look it up, I had too. It is worth the read. :)

Welcome to episode 32 of the Make America Grape Again Podcast, where we return to the Great Plains and imbibe the 2016 Chambourcin from Glacial Till Winery, located in Palmyra, Nebraska.  Chambourcin is a grape we have not yet met in the podcast. This French-American hybrid is a cross between Chancellor and Seyve-Villard 12-417. Chambourcin is also one of the most abundant hybrid varietals still grown in France today, and it is known across the world in colder, wetter, regions for producing full-flavored, aromatic reds. It is a grape we will meet again in future episodes. The history of the wine industry in Nebraska begins in the late 19th century, by the end of which 5,000 acres of grapes were in production. Most vineyards of this era were located in the counties of southeastern Nebraska which were adjacent to the Missouri River. The Nebraska wine industry was devastated in the 1910s by Prohibition; after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the remaining commercial grape industry in Nebraska was destroyed by a massive winter storm in November of 1940.The wine and grape industry in Nebraska was essentially dead after the storm until the mid-1980s; the passage of the Nebraska Farm Wineries Act by the Nebraska Legislature in 1986 increased the amount of wine that a Nebraska winery could produce from 200 US gallons to 50,000 US gallons. Even in the early 1990s, though, fewer than 10 acres of vineyards were in cultivation in the state.  This changed with the opening of Cuthills Vineyard, in Pierce, Nebraska, in 1994. Following shortly thereafter, James Arthur Vineyards opened, and in 1998, the Nebraska Winery and Grape Growers Association was created to enhance the prestige of Nebraska wines and vineyards. Since then, 28 additional wineries have opened across the entire state, sourcing grapes from roughly 100 planted vineyards which are found scattered across Nebraska. As of press, Nebraska has no established American Viticulture Areas, nor am I aware of pending legislation to create any.I should also note that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has four experimental vineyards in Nebraska, and there is a breeding program for the creation of new grape varietals associated with both the university and Cuthills Vineyards. This program seeks to cross European varietals with indigenous Nebraska grape species. The first grape varietal released from this grape breeding program is a varietal known as Temparia. While I have actually visited the tasting room for Glacial Till Vineyards in Ashland, Nebraska, many years ago, (as well as the James Arthur Vineyards tasting room in Lincoln on that same trip), this bottle was acquired through their website by yours truly a few months ago.  The fact is when I tasted an earlier vintage of this Chambourcin, I fell in love because of the use of French, rather than American Oak... but had an already packed suitcase. Lamentations ensued, but now the world is right again.

In the latest episode of “Hot off the Press” Chef Panini Pete and partner and HOTPpodcast producer Keith Glines broadcast from Sunset Pointe to talk Tequila 101 with Cuestion Spirits Company CEO, Jason Fandrich. A manager in the Nashville music scene, Fandrich said he reached a point when he realized it was time for a career change. In other words, he needed to pay the bills. After sending out his resume, Fandrich was approached by a major entertainment company to oversee the rum division of the business. After talking with a friend about what his next step would be, and sharing his concerns about leaving the entertainment industry, his friend reassured him, “You’re not. It’s all the entertainment industry.” But just two weeks after accepting the position, Fandrich received a call that his division had been bought out and the job was no longer available. Shortly after, as fate would have it, Fandrich stumbled on to what he says was the best tequila he’d ever tasted at a street sampling while vacationing in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Little did he know that first sip of Cuestion was about to launch him into the booze business after all and into a partnership to distribute the tequila world-wide. Founded in 2007 by Jose de Jesus Dominguez Figueroa and Jose de Julio Marquez Ochoa, Cuestión Tequila is 500 years in the making. According to Fandrich, distilling top-notch tequila begins with first recognizing that the process is horticulture before it’s alchemy. Not sacrificing quality for quantity is what sets Cuestion apart. Cuestion uses only matured Blue Weber agave plant aged in the fields of Jalisco, Mexico, for about ten years. Hand-picked by los jimadores, noble farmers of the fields, each blade is sheared from the core in preparation for its journey. Cuestion is aged 50% – 300% longer than almost any other premium tequila on the market in whiskey-cured, charcoal finished American Oak barrels. The award-winning spirits which include Cuestion Tequila Blanco, Cuestion Tequila Reposado, and Cuestion Tequila Añejo, have received 24 gold medals in blind tasting competitions to date. Steve, Ben and the Beast Masters welcome Chris Riesbeck of Westland Distillery for a very special event at the Norwood Club in NYC. We were very happy to have the club taste through the full line up of Westland’s whiskies.  Westland is one of our very favorite craft distillers and one of the leading producers of American Single Malt whiskies. Tune in to learn what makes Westland unique and delicious as Chris gets into everything from the barley in their malts to the wood in their barrels and everything in between. This particular evening was doubly sweet as it was the first in what we hope to be a series of events at the amazing Norwood Club.  The folks at Norwood are expert hosts and their club is truly a marvel - beautiful and sophisticated but completely fun and unpretentious.  A perfect setting for the Beasts to dig into Westland’s American Oak, Sherry Wood, Peated, Garyanna, and Winter 2016 offerings.

Season 1, Episode 11 - Newport Beach Brewing Company brewmaster, Derek Bougie, joins us for a mouthwatering pucker-fest, featuring two great brews from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, and three sour homebrews from Derek himself. This week on Four Brewers, our friend and special guest, Derek Bougie is bringing his beer geek “A” game as well as his unique style of ball-busting. We start off with two great beers from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, out of Dexter, Michigan. The first beer is a collaboration with Maui Brewing Company called “Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole” (which means “superhuman” and “without limits”), a wild ale made with cherries and liliko’i fruits. Jolly Pumpkin, Maui Brewing, and Anchorage Brewing Collaborations The second beer is another collaboration ale, but this time between Jolly Pumpkin andAnchorage Brewing Co. called “Calabaza Boreal“, a saison style ale made with grapefruit peel, grapefruit juice and peppercorns. It almost comes off sort of like an IPA with it’s grapefruit character, and is an interesting and overall excellent brew. Feature: Homebrew – Derek Bougie’s Sours. Derek was kind enough to share three sour homebrews which were aged in a six gallon, medium-toast American Oak barrel. The first brew, named “La Vahine“, was originally and ale that was somewhere in the realm of a brown ale and a dubbel. It clocks in around 7%, and is at this point, a little under four years old. Beer number two is an 8.75% golden sour ale, appropriately named “Golden Sour“, bottled in August of 2009. We don’t really dwell on this brew a lot, as the show kind of goes off the rails while we discuss rap-rock, conservatives, and the Detroit music scene. Yeah…we apologize in advance. Derek Bougie’s Homebrewed Sours The final beer from Mr. Bougie is a 8.75% sour ale, aged in the same barrel as the previous two brews. This brew, “Funky Nuts“, was bottled six years ago, and was “Best in Show” winner at the 2008 Orange County Fair. Big thanks go out to Derek for sharing his tasty homebrew with us. If you’re ever in the Newport Beach area, make a stop at Newport Beach Brewing Co., and give Derek a high-five. Buy some beer and food while you’re there, too—it’s a great spot! If you didn’t hear already, we’re officially on Stitcher. See you next week! Drink some beer! Tokyo's whisky bars are legendary, but so hard to find that they're often compared to Prohibition-era speakeasies. Hidetsugo Ueno owns Bar High Five in Tokyo's Ginza district, and shares his stories of Tokyo bar life with us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Diageo announces plans for a new $115 million distillery in Kentucky, while the drinks giant's CEO is warning of problems if Scotland breaks away from the United Kingdom. Robb Report names Redbreast 21 its "Best Of The Best" among spirits, and Ardbeg kicks off its World Cup-themed Auriverdes single malt not on Islay, but just outside Boston. This week's tasting notes include Auchentoshan's new American Oak single malt, Tomatin's new 14-year-old, and the Buchanan's Master blended Scotch.
