Adolescence is a pivotal time in a young person's life. The adolescent brain, while it has developed in size, is not done growing and changing. In this episode, I explore the complexities of neurodiversity between biology and experience in shaping the developmental journey of neurodivergent youth. It's time to challenge conventional narratives surrounding developmental conditions and embrace a more inclusive approach rooted in developmental diversity. Throughout this episode, we'll uncover strategies to empower young people who learn and think differently, shedding light on the unique challenges and vulnerabilities they face during adolescence. We can support teens through these years of big emotions, impulsiveness, and vulnerability on top of the increasing academic and societal pressures they face as they navigate their development into adulthood.   Show Notes: [1:40] - The adolescent brain is not the same as an adult brain. [3:35] - What is pruning and why is it an important component of brain development? [4:43] - Many parents struggle to understand the emotions and impulsiveness of their teenagers. [6:05] - The developmental process is not uniform. [7:09] - Adolescence is also a time of vulnerabilities, particularly for neurodivergent youth. [8:06] - Due to brain development, teens will also respond to stress differently from adults. [9:11] - There are things that can help support brain development like exercise and prioritizing sleep. [11:02] - Everyone's brain works in different ways. Teens need to understand this as their own brain is developing. [12:27] - Continued support, particularly in areas such as executive functioning, is essential as teens transition into adulthood.   Links and Related Resources: The Teen Brain: 6 Things to Know Anxiety and Depression in Adolescents Episode 160: The Sleep Deprived Teen with Lisa Lewis   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses with LIVE AMA Sessions   The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. What's going on in the adolescent brain? SO much! Between ages 12 and 24 (give or take a year or two), the brain goes through a major remodel. Last week, I talked about how puberty is triggered by changes in hormone levels. Today, we're diving into another process happening within the adolescent brain called pruning. I'll help you understand the brain science behind what's happening, why pruning happens and how it affects development. Changes in the Adolescent BrainThe essence of adolescence can be attributed to the changes in the brain, and one of the biggest changes happening during this time is pruning. Pruning is when the brain keeps the connections that are used frequently and discards those that don't seem to be needed anymore. It's the process that takes us from being open to anything as an elementary aged kid, to becoming an expert at a few things as an adult.Just as you would prune extra, unneeded branches from a fruit tree to increase production, the brain is pruning extra brain cells (neurons) and connections (synapses) that are no longer needed. As a young child, there is SO much to learn, and the brain is constantly creating new neurons to adapt to all of these new experiences and stimuli. At a certain point, it becomes too much, so the brain begins to prune unneeded neurons and synapses. Benefits of Pruning in AdolescentsPruning helps to make the brain more efficient and adaptable. It allows us to think and process faster, make decisions and understand things like cause and effect, time and big-picture planning. It actually makes it easier to learn because the brain is no longer so full of things that it doesn't need anymore. And with more space, the brain lays down new connections and circuitry toward the prefrontal cortex, where cognitive function happens. You'll start to see your tween or teen thinking about things differently and making better decisions as this process occurs. They are more able to think for themselves and become more responsible. The prefrontal cortex is also where empathy lives. Our kids will have the ability to be more empathetic when they can take on the perspectives of other people. Stress response will begin to improve. As we talked about last week, puberty creates a lot of work for the stress system in adolescent bodies, but the new circuitry in the brain will then help your kid access better coping mechanisms. Finally, pruning can affect language and communication abilities, making it easier for your teen to express themselves. This helps maintain open lines of communication, which is crucial for healthy parent-child relationships. Challenges of PruningIf you think of your kid's brain like a house, their primal fight or flight response is the basement, the emotional limbic center is the main level and the upstairs is the part of the brain that does all the thinking.During the pruning process, the staircase is being built. But it isn't always built in order. Some sections might be built separately or there might be stairs that lead to nowhere and need to be remodeled. It's not always a clear, straight pathway. As you can imagine, climbing a staircase that's missing some parts can be challenging. And sometimes the brain overprunes (like an over-eager gardener). It might cut back too many neurons and need to rebuild them. Some challenging behaviors you might see during this time are:Emotional dysregulation and mood fluctuations.Learning and academic challenges (e.g. difficulty concentrating, organizing information or adapting...

Dr. Armstrong explains what makes the adolescent so amazingly powerful and talks about how we can tap its wonders in the middle school and high school level with simple interventions such as bringing emotion into learning, providing students with physical movement as they learn, incorporating real life experiences like internships and apprenticeships, and helping students understand how their brains work. Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. is the author of 20 books including his latest, a novel called Childless. His other books include The Power of the Adolescent Brain, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, 7 Kinds of Smart, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom, and The Human Odyssey. There are over 100 foreign editions of Dr. Armstrong's books in 30 languages. Dr. Armstrong has given over 1000 keynotes, workshop presentations, and lectures on six continents in 29 countries, and 44 states in the past thirty years. His clients have included Sesame Street, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the European Council of International Schools, the Republic of Singapore, and several state departments of education. He has written articles for Family Circle and Ladies Home Journal, as well as a column for Parenting Magazine. Key Takeaways “What were they thinking?” A lot of things are going on in the teenage brain that were not going on 2-3-4 years ago. It's amazing that teenagers are as reasonable as they are given the neurological changes and growth happening within the teenage brain. The teenage brain can often seem that they have their foot on the gas pedal, but the brakes haven't been installed yet. They have an insatiable need for new experiences. The teenage brain fully develops around the age of 22-23. Giving teens the chance to make choices and take responsibility is important for their mental growth. Help your teen to self-regulate their emotions. Help them understand what the triggers are and then help them develop their own strategies on what they can do about it. Teens are looking for leadership, people who can help them learn things. Be sure that they are learning from people who have their best interest in mind. Help them find mentors in their area of interest so they can have hands on experience. The teenage brain is seeking reward. Social media plays a huge role in that need. Parents can tab into rewarding their teen in ways that satisfy that need without giving way to social media. We are born as geniuses with the joy and passion to learn. Over time, that can be diminished. As parents we can stop suppressing the things that they love to do. Let them have the experiences that help them decide what they want to move towards. J., Scheinin, N. M., Karlsson, L., Karlsson, H., Sousa, N., Rodrigues, A. J. Abstract: Synthetic Glucocorticoids (sGC) are commonly prescribed in preterm risk pregnancies in order to improve fetal organ maturation. This administration greatly reduces perinatal and neonatal mortality and respiratory distress syndrome associated with prematurity, but preclinical evidence warns for an adverse effect of sGC in the developing brain. In this work we evaluated the long-term effects of prenatal exposure to sGC in the brain of 17 years-old adolescents using multimodal MRI. From 4607 birth registrations from Hospital de Braga - Portugal, we selected participants that were born with similar gestational age, but that were either exposed during pregnancy to sGC (n=21) or non-exposed (n=24). After obtaining a detailed clinical history, participants were subjected to an extensive neuropsychological evaluation, followed by structural and functional MRI. No differences were found in the performance on neuropsychological tests between sGC-exposed and non-exposed participants. Moreover, no differences were found in regional brain volumes. However, the sGC-exposed group presented reduced functional connectivity at rest in a network involving primarily sub-cortical, cerebellar and frontal nodes in comparison to the non-exposed group, even after controlling for confounding factors such as gestational age at birth, birth weight, and sex. Our results suggest that prenatal sGC-exposed adolescents present no significant deviations in neuropsychological performance in the dimensions that we evaluated, although they presented altered functional connectivity, highlighting the need for additional studies to understand the impact of these changes in brain functioning and in behavior. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.04.535587v1?rss=1 Authors: Cetin-Karayumak, S., Zhang, F., Billah, T., Zekelman, L., Makris, N., Pieper, S., O'Donnell, L. J., Rathi, Y. Abstract: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study is a groundbreaking effort aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of adolescent brain development. With data collected from over 10,000 children across 21 sites, this study promises to unlock key insights into the cognitive, behavioral, and neuroimaging data that underpins this critical period of development. However, the potential use of diffusion MRI (dMRI) data in this study is hindered by site-specific scanner and protocol variability, which precludes naive pooling of the data from across sites for analysis. In response to this challenge, we have developed an aggregated database of harmonized dMRI data, comprising imaging data from 9345 subjects and their white matter tracts, as well as tract-specific microstructural measures. This resource has been made publicly available via the NIMH Data Archive (NDA). The generation of this database required enormous computational effort, taking ~50,000 CPU hours to effectively harmonize the dMRI data, run whole brain tractography, and perform white matter parcellation. The data available through the NDA includes: harmonized dMRI data, several dMRI derived measures (e.g., fractional anisotropy) for 73 anatomically well-defined white matter fiber bundles in all 9345 subjects and streamlines corresponding to each fiber bundle for visualization. In this work, we further demonstrate the efficacy of our dMRI data harmonization algorithm on the ABCD dataset using multiple experiments, allowing researchers to perform their own analyses on the harmonized data. The data resources made available through this work will allow for new structural connectivity studies of neurodevelopment in children and adolescents at an unprecedented scale. This week's episode is the second part of the conversation we began last week in episode #42 with my guest, Kriya Lendzion, an addiction and prevention specialist and adolescent clinician.Last week we discussed how today's substances are vastly different from those of our youth, why our kids try them to begin with (despite all our warnings), how easily they can become addicted and how we should try to keep them from using any addictive substance for as long as we can.In this week's episode Kriya helps us understand boundaries around using substances, tells us how we can use “creative consequences” to help replace their desire to use substances, how to help them refuse substances and keep their “cool points” and most importantly, perhaps, how we should respond to them when we discover they've used substances despite all of our efforts. One of the most significant and potentially troublesome issues we face as the parent of an adolescent is their potential use of substances (alcohol, nicotine, weed, party drugs, etc.)Depending on our background, our upbringing, our experiences with those substances, we can develop vastly different perspectives and attitudes about our kid's potential use. Some parents see drinking or smoking weed as a harmless rite of passage. However, according to science, there's nothing harmless about it and the risks are far too great to adopt that attitude. In this week's episode my guest, Kriya Lendzion, an addiction and prevention specialist and adolescent clinician, we take a closer look at the latest versions of substances our teens and tweens are exposed to today. And we discuss how their brain is wired in such a way that makes substance use all too common and misuse and addiction a very real possibility for many. We'll continue the conversation in next week's episode where we discuss exactly what to do when we discover our kid's used drugs or alcohol and how to head it off in the first place.Download Kriya's Grown Ups Guide to the Adolescent Brain (and How to Parent It) and read, How to Respond When We Discover our Kids Drinking or Using Drugs and 10 Tips for Becoming a Teen Communication Jedi. H., Parviainen, T. Abstract: Top-down attentional control seems to increase and suppress the activity of sensory cortices for relevant stimuli and to suppress activity for irrelevant ones. Higher physical activity (PA) and aerobic fitness (AF) levels have been associated with improved attention, but most studies have focused on unimodal tasks (e.g., visual stimuli only). The impact of higher PA or AF levels on the ability of developing brains to focus on certain stimuli while ignoring distractions remains unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the neural processes in visual and auditory sensory cortices during a cross-modal attention-allocation task using magnetoencephalography in 13 to 16 years old adolescents (n = 51). During continuous and simultaneous visual (15 Hz) and auditory (40 Hz) noise-tagging stimulation, participants attended to either visual or auditory targets appearing on their left or right sides. High and low PA groups were formed based on seven-day accelerometer measurements, and high and low AF groups were determined based on the 20-m shuttle-run test. Steady-state (evoked) responses to the visual stimulus were observed in all the adolescents in the primary visual cortex, but some did not show responses in the primary auditory cortices to the auditory stimulus. The adolescents with auditory-tag-driven signals in the left temporal cortex were older than those who did not show responses. Visual cortices showed enhanced visual-tag-related activity with attention, but there was no cross-modal effect, perhaps due to the developmental effect observed in the temporal areas. The visual-tag-related responses in the occipital cortex were enhanced in the higher PA group, irrespective of task demands. In summary, sensory cortices are unequally involved in cross-modal attention in the adolescent brain. This involvement seems to be enhanced by attention. Higher PA seems to be associated with a specific visual engagement benefit in the adolescent brain. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: As we move toward population-level developmental neuroscience, understanding intra- and interindividual variability in brain maturation and sources of neurodevelopmental heterogeneity becomes paramount. Large-scale, longitudinal neuroimaging studies have uncovered group-level neurodevelopmental trajectories, and while recent work has begun to untangle intra- and interindividual differences, they remain largely unclear. Here, we aim to quantify both intra- and inter-individual variability across facets of neurodevelopment from late childhood to early adolescence in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, and examine the contributions of age, sex, puberty, sociodemographic factors, and MRI scanner manufacturer to inter-individual variability. Our results provide novel insight into differences in microstructure development between cortical and subcortical gray matter. We found that an individual's starting point is related to how their brain changes, across all brain outcomes. Although both sex and pubertal status contributed to inter-individual variability, we found limited support for hypotheses regarding greater male-than-female variability and increases in inter-individual variability throughout puberty. Finally, we uncovered enmeshed contributions of sociodemographics and MRI scanner manufacturers to inter-individual variability in this dataset, due in part to sociodemographic differences in participants scanned on Siemens, GE, and Philips MRIs. This work highlights pockets of individual variability for future investigation, describes a promising approach for quantifying deviations from normative development, and urges caution in covariate choice for investigators using ABCD Study data. Dr. Colvin's offers guidance for when we should push their “growth edge” and when we should accept that this is how things are going to be for a while...    Show Notes: That ‘Brain Fog' You're Feeling Is Perfectly Normal https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2020/04/22/cognitive-change-stress-coronavirus-molly-colvin   Why You Can't Shake Pandemic Anxiety https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2021/03/09/covid-19-pandemic-psychological-recovery-molly-colvin   Visit OOMLA to shop thoughtfully designed (OOM)Bras!   Produced by Dear Media

We discuss Dr. Daniel Siegel's new book titled "Brainstorm- The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain". Dr. Siegel explains that adolescence has an ESSENCE that is often overlooked. ESSENCE stands for: ES: An Emotional Spark is revealed in the enhanced way emotion generated from sub-cortical areas washes over the cortical circuits of reasoning. The downsides are emotional storms and moodiness; the upside is a powerful passion to live life fully, to capture life being on fire. SE: Social Engagement emerges as teens turn more toward peers than parents, the downside being falling prey to peer pressure simply to gain membership in a group, the upside being the central importance of supportive relationships in our lives. Relationships are the key factor associated with medical and mental health, longevity, and even happiness. N: Novelty-seeking emerges from shifts in the brain's dopamine system with the downside of risk-taking behavior and injury, and the upside of having the courage to leave the familiar, certain, and safe home nest for the unfamiliar, uncertain, potentially unsafe world beyond. CE: And our Creative Exploration of adolescence is found as we push against the status quo, imagining how things could be, not simply accepting them for what they are. The downside? Not just conforming to life as usual can be disorienting and stressful. The upside? The thrill and passion of discovery—and the reality that most innovations in art, music, science and technology emerge from the adolescent mind. Dr. Siegel reminds us to be conscious of adolescent ESSENCE so we can better relate to our children and respect this important time of development.
