In this episode, Dr. Vera Tarman sits down with world-renowned nephrologist, researcher, and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Jason Fung to explore one of the most pressing questions in the food addiction community: Is fasting safe for the food addict? Dr. Fung's latest book, The Hunger Code: Resetting Your Body's Fat Thermostat in the Age of Ultra-Processed Food, challenges the calorie-centric model of obesity and offers a deeper, more honest look at why we eat the way we do — and what it actually takes to change. In this episode, you'll hear: Why the calories in/calories out model fails — and what the hormonal model of obesity actually means The three types of hunger driving overeating: homeostatic, hedonic, and conditioned hunger — and why the social and emotional components may account for 90% of our eating behavior How ultra-processed foods are engineered to hijack the brain's reward system — and why that matters for food addicts The difference between fasting and starvation — and why the mindset behind fasting changes everything The dangers of using fasting as a punishment after a binge — and how to use it safely and intentionally instead Why a low-carb, higher-fat diet makes fasting more sustainable for people coming out of binge cycles Dr. Fung's honest take on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic — the benefits, the limitations, and why they're not the whole answer What Japan and Italy get right about eating culture that the U.S. has lost Why public policy — not just personal willpower — must be part of the solution to ultra-processed food addiction About Dr. Jason Fung: Dr. Jason Fung is a Toronto-based nephrologist and one of the world's leading experts on therapeutic fasting and low-carb nutrition. He is the bestselling author of The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, The Cancer Code, and his newest release, The Hunger Code. He is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a coaching program helping people reverse obesity and type 2 diabetes through hormonal and lifestyle approaches.
Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist, New York Times bestselling author, and leading voice in the fields of intermittent fasting, insulin resistance, weight loss, and type 2 diabetes. He is best known for his books The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, The Complete Guide to Fasting, and The Hunger Code, where he challenges the traditional “calories in, calories out” model and argues that hormones, especially insulin, play a major role in fat storage, hunger, and metabolic health. Dr. Fung co-founded The Fasting Method and has helped popularize fasting as a practical tool for improving metabolic health and supporting sustainable weight loss. Today on the show we discuss: why losing body fat is more complicated than calories in versus calories out, how hormones like insulin and cortisol affect fat storage, why ultra-processed foods can drive hunger and cravings, how emotional eating and habit-based eating keep people stuck, why fasting works best when paired with better food choices, and the simple daily habits that can improve insulin control, including whole foods, fewer refined carbs, walking after meals, better sleep, and stress management and much more. Cancer can be seen as a seed that only sprouts in the right soil—the body's inner landscape. Today, that soil is changing fast, and cancer rates are climbing, especially among young people. Our modern diet—packed with sugar, processed foods, and nonstop snacking—keeps the body flooded with signals to grow, not heal. But there's good news: by eating real, colorful foods and giving the body time to rest between meals, we can calm inflammation, balance our gut, and make our inner soil far less welcoming to disease. The power to shift the story lies in every bite and every pause we take. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Thomas Seyfried, how modern diets and constant eating create a fertile soil for disease. Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse Type 2 Diabetes naturally with fasting. His work on fasting has been cited by CNN, Time, The Atlantic, Forbes, The Toronto Star, and many other media outlets. His latest book is The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery. Dr. Thomas Seyfried is an American professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1976 and did his postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications, and his research focuses primarily on the mechanisms driving cancer, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases and calorie-restricted ketogenic diets in their prevention and treatment. He is the author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer and presently serves on the Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro editorial boards. We want to detox our guts to gain:1.) more health, 2.) a better immune system,3.) longevity, 4.) a higher sexual potency when making it with fasting, 5.) and to get rid of the negative feelings created through our toxin in the colon. Two procedures:One with fasting one without fasting. With fasting is better because we detox so the whole body.We need Bentonite clay and Psyllium Husk. I have bought them from “Iherbs.com.”Bentonite clay from “Living Clay” (on the package is printed: Detox Clay powder) and Psyllium husk powder from “Now.” A.) Fasting Method:Preparation:Eat for 3 to 7 days eat a plant-based diet…only vegetables with rice and beans, or one meal with fruits: For instance a green smoothy in the morning: fruits (like bananas, mangoes, papaya), salad leaves and water/yogurt (if you like with Honey)blend it.Eat every day one time 100g - 200g fermented vegetables or Probiotic; add 3 Tablespoon fresh ground Flaxseed. Don't eat: 1.) Gluten (Wheat, Rye,…)2.) Meat, 3.) Fish, 4.) Poultry, 5.) Sugar.Afterward :Eat every day eat one time 100g - 200g fermented vegetables or Probiotic; add 3 Tablespoon fresh ground Flaxseed.Day 1: Replace 1 meal with only 1Teaspoon (round) Bentonite clay and 200ml water stir and drink.Wait 5 minutes.1Tablespoon Psyllium husk and 250ml water stir fast and drink fast because it will thicken fast.Don't blend it with Juice because with the juice it will ferment to alcohol and so harm the colon.Eat every day eat one time 100 to 200g fermented vegetables or Probiotic; add 3 Tablespoon fresh ground Flaxseed. Day 2:Replace 2 meals with the Bentonite clay drink and Psyllium husk drink (make a pause of 5minutes between both drinks). Day 3 to day 5 drink only the Bentonite clay drink and Psyllium husk drink.Celebrate with a healthy fresh pressed juice. If you have congestion then :Then you can make a colon flush with an enema.Or mix 720ml water with 60g Epson salt for a whole day. And drink a glass or two when necessary. B.) Without Fasting Method:Make for 3 to 7 days a preparation diet described in the previous Fasting method.Afterward eat again for every day, the plant-based meals with fermented vegetables and flaxseed as described before.Day 1Eat your plant-based meals as described before. One hour before one meal drink the Bentonite clay drink and Psyllium husk drink (make a pause of 5minutes between both drinks). Day 2 Eat your plant-based meals as described before. Drink 2 times, 1 hour before each 2 meals the Bentonite clay drink and Psyllium husk drink (make a pause of 5minutes between both drinks). Day 3 to Day 5 Eat your plant-based meals as described before. Drink 3 times, 1 hour before each 3 meals the Bentonite clay drink and Psyllium husk drink (make a pause of 5minutes between both drinks).Celebrate with a healthy fresh pressed juice. If you have congestion then :Then you can make a colon flush with an enema.Or mix 720ml water with 60g Epson salt for a whole day. And drink a glass or two when necessary. If you've ever wondered whether fasting is your golden ticket or just another wellness trend that will leave you frustrated—this episode is for YOU. I sat down with Renee Fitton from Prolon to break down intermittent fasting vs. fasting mimicking—and spoiler alert: yes, there's a difference, and yes, it matters, especially if you're a woman in perimenopause or menopause. Renee and I dove into: How the Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet gives you food and the benefits of fasting (without white knuckling your way through the day) Why five days is the sweet spot for fat loss, inflammation, and muscle protection What the hell “autophagy” is and why it's like a Dyson vacuum for your cells How you can turn back the biological clock—for real—in just 15 days a year What happens after the 5 days (spoiler: don't sprint to 7-Eleven for chips and wine) The one big fasting mistake women over 40 keep making We talked why your metabolism is not mad at you and how Prolon makes it dummy-proof with everything you need in one box. No Googling. No guesswork. Just results. Key Takeaways: Fasting mimicking = food without breaking the fast = results without wrecking your hormones Too much of a good thing? Still too much. (Yes, even fasting.) Your muscle is your metabolism. Don't lose it trying to lose fat. You only need to do this 3x a year for noticeable longevity and fat-loss benefits Refeeding = just as important as fasting. In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling look at what science tells us about which type of fasting works best, diving into research that followed almost 10,000 people across 153 different studies. They share some exciting findings - like how alternate day fasting came out on top 82% of the time when measuring things like weight loss and blood sugar improvements. Plus, they unpack why people stick with fasting more often (up to 98% of the time!) compared to regular dieting (only 62-78%). The hosts break down what these numbers mean for everyday people trying to improve their health, and help listeners figure out which fasting approach might work best for their own lifestyle and goals. Whether you're new to fasting or looking to fine-tune your approach, this episode offers clear, science-backed guidance without getting too technical. In this bonus episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast, I talk with the author of The Obesity Code, a renowned expert on obesity and intermittent fasting, who explains that there is much more to gaining or losing weight than just the number of calories consumed. It's not only about the energy in the food, but critically, it's about what your body does with that energy. We dive into the complex role of hormones and common myths around calories to make a compelling case for why we need to look beyond overly-simplistic "eat less, move more" advice to understand obesity and weight loss. Dr. Jason Fung is a New York Times-bestselling author of many books including The Obesity Code and The Diabetes Code. He completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at UCLA. He is the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with intermittent fasting. What We Discuss: "Calories in, calories out" overly simplistic Body stores or burns calories based on hormones Different foods have different hormonal effects Insulin drives fat storage; spiked by certain foods Protein: insulin and satiety effects Processed carbs especially fattening Foods' hormonal impacts key, not just calories …and more! SUMMER BREAK As Terri takes a couple of weeks away from her podcast duties and after Coach Lisa's episode last week about cortisol-lowering techniques, it seemed like a good time to remind podcast listeners about Coach Lisa's story. Today, I'm fortunate to welcome Dr. Jason Fung for the fifth time. Jason Fung, MD, was born in 1973 and trained in Los Angeles and Toronto as a kidney specialist. He founded The Fasting Method (TheFastingMethod.com) to provide evidence-based advice for weight loss and managing blood sugars, focusing on low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting. In this episode, Dr. Jason Fung emphasizes that fasting should not be followed by binge eating, as it negates the benefits of the fast. The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Tune in as Dr. Fung explains certain foods stimulate GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. Protein-rich foods make you feel full quickly, while bitter foods like arugula, dandelion greens, ginger, and spices such as turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon can suppress appetite. However, while pharmaceutical interventions targeting GLP-1 can be powerful, they are not always ideal due to potential side effects, such as nausea and loss of enjoyment in food. [1:49] Are You Cutting Calories? Start Fasting Instead And See The Benefits! Simply reducing your calorie intake to reduce body fat is a false belief. If you eat less, you burn less, resulting in energy expenditure going down. When you take energy in, you can burn or store it. But what you cannot do is take the stored energy out and burn it. If your insulin is high, you can't burn fat. [8:08] Do Other Hormones Besides Insulin Also Help The Body To Retain Fat? Many factors affect your insulin, but the main one is metabolism. Maintain a low level of insulin. The amount of energy is put in or taken out doesn't matter. You cannot burn body fat if your insulin level is maintained at high levels. Fasting is beneficial because it's the most effective way to lower your insulin. Some foods are more fattening than other foods. For example, even though broccoli and cookies have the same calories, cookies are more fattening than broccoli. [18:31] If You Have Damaged Metabolism, Don't Lose Hope, You Can Rebuild Your level of hunger determines how much and how frequently you eat. You are not consciously in charge of that: you can choose not to eat, but you cannot choose to feel less hungry. It's not about willpower, it's about your appetite. It's not about the calories, it's what's behind those calories. More important: question whether you store or burn the energy that comes to your body. [29:05] The Facts About Type 2 Diabetes and How to Fight It Type 2 diabetes may be controlled, but it leads to heart disease, strokes, and other complications which lead to death. Type 2 diabetes is a straightforward illness to comprehend. Your body has too much sugar and cannot store any more. As a result, it leaks into the blood. When you start measuring it in your blood, you know your sugar storage capacity has been surpassed. And this is going to generate problems. Type 2 diabetes is not a chronic and progressive disease. It is reversible. Changing diet and lifestyle is the step to reverse type 2 diabetes. Older medications such as insulin don't provide organ protection. New medications help to remove sugar from the body, compared to insulin which only moves sugar around. [40:09] What Fasting Techniques Can Force Insulin Down? Find the balance between efficiency and effectiveness. If you choose something too hard, you won't do it. For starters, you could do a 16-hour fast and a two-meals-a-day plan. From there, you could gradually increase your fasting time from 16 hours to 24 and eventually into 36 hour fast, which is the most effective. Thirty-six hours fast just becomes hard because of social reasons. [53:08] Workout While Fasting: Is It Good Or Bad? Listen Here! Your body will typically decide where it will acquire its energy. Your body stores glycogen, and for most individuals, you'll practically never run out of it. When people participate in activities like marathons, you occasionally witness them depleting their glycogen reserves. Keep in mind that, with the exception of the brain, every tissue in your body may use body fat as an energy source. [04:59] What significance does being aware of and committed to maintaining a safe environment have? · After Megan married and planned to start a family, unexpected environmental toxin issues caused health problems, delaying their plans and requiring a crash course in environmental toxins. · The couple moved to the Bay Area due to career opportunities. However, the relocation and the subsequent pandemic added further obstacles to their journey to parenthood, making it logistically challenging to conceive conventionally. · The discovery of low ovarian reserves due to PCOS led the couple to pursue IVF intentionally to bank embryos, ensuring options for future pregnancies. Multiple rounds of embryo collections were required, reflecting their challenges while striving to expand their family. · Megan shares their experience of overcoming metabolic illnesses, insulin resistance, and weight loss, only to face a severe setback due to exposure to environmental toxins. Their health suffered, almost costing them everything, including their marriage and professional endeavours. · Despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, fasting, and utilizing various tools, constant exposure to environmental toxins caused significant cellular inflammation. The resulting health issues required thyroid medication and high doses of T3 to function. · The move to a healthier environment demonstrated the immediate impact of environmental changes on Megan's health. It highlighted the importance of thoroughly investigating potential properties for toxins before purchasing and being prepared for the associated costs. Megan emphasizes the need for awareness and commitment to creating a safe environment. [20:25] A Guide to Navigating Hormonal Differences in Women with Metabolic Disease · Recognizing the role of insulin resistance in driving hormonal imbalances, including PCOS, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing its management to achieve better health outcomes. · Women experience hormonal fluctuations throughout their lives, which can influence their ability to fast and affect their health goals. By acknowledging the impact of hormones on fastings, such as the suppression of certain hormones and potential metabolic complications, women can adapt their fasting strategies to align with their hormonal cycles. · The menstrual cycle consists of distinct phases with varying hormone dominance. Women can optimize their fasting experience and support hormone production by modifying fasting approaches and adopting time-restricted eating strategies. Recognizing the importance of changing fasting protocols during different phases allows for improved hormone balance and metabolic outcomes. [30:51] Acknowledge and Honor Your Unique Hormonal Cycle · Every woman's hormonal cycle is unique, and it's important to recognize and honour those variations. By observing how fasting and nutritional choices align with personal hormonal fluctuations, women can tailor their approach accordingly and find a balance that works for them. · Women can use the moon cycle as an illustrative guide to adapt their fasting and eating patterns. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, adjusting the dial on fasting intensity based on how it feels can provide a flexible and intuitive way to navigate hormonal changes and individual needs. ·: In a society inundated with external influences and societal expectations, reconnecting with one's body and intuition is crucial. Regularly checking in with oneself, listening to the body's signals, and adjusting fasting and nutrition strategies can lead to a more intuitive and sustainable approach to health and well-being. [41:42] How can your overall health outcomes be maintained and improved? · When starting a fasting and keto journey for individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, strictness may vary based on personal circumstances and goals. Tailoring the approach to each individual's needs and preferences is crucial for long-term success. · A more strict and therapeutic fasting approach may be initially recommended to address severe insulin resistance and metabolic issues. This can involve longer fasting periods, time-restricted eating, and cutting out snacking and late-night eating to promote improved blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity. · Once significant improvements are achieved, adjustments can be made to incorporate variations and explore different strategies, such as including more carbohydrates or modifying fasting durations. Finding a balance between therapeutic protocols and sustainable long-term practices is important for maintaining progress and optimizing overall health outcomes. [47:10] How can women Manage their Hormonal Changes and Fasting Strategies? · Ovaries are crucial in producing sex hormones throughout a woman's childbearing years. As they retire, estrogen levels decline, leading to symptoms like sleep disturbances and hormonal imbalances. The adrenal glands step in to compensate, but chronic stress and age-related factors can further impact hormone production. · Postmenopausal women can benefit from a proactive approach to fasting. Hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance can be reduced by addressing insulin resistance and emphasizing fat loss. Aggressive fasting protocols, similar to those used for diabetes management, are often implemented while also considering individual variations and the impact of stress. · Supporting women through hormonal fluctuations during fasting involves adopting a compassionate mindset and allowing for self-compassion during challenging times. Time-restricted eating and a more ketogenic approach can be incorporated during certain phases. Carb cycling remains beneficial for overall hormonal balance and metabolic health. AND MUCH MORE!
