Brian interviews Phil Gurski. Phil is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting. He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS from 2001‐2013, specializing in Al Qaeda‐inspired violent extremism and radicalization. From 1983 to 2000 he was employed as a senior multilingual analyst at Communications Security Establishment, specializing in the Middle East. He has also served as senior special advisor in the National Security Directorate at Public Safety Canada. Mr. Gurski has presented on Al Qaeda‐inspired violent extremism and radicalization across Canada and around the world. He talks about Chinese interference in Canadian elections and the David Johnston report.

For his entire career, he's worked in the intelligence and security community. And Phil Gurski isn't happy with the way the issues with China have been handled. He's an author and President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consultants. He's spent decades in that sphere focussed mainly on terrorism but knows of the work his former colleagues have done. And he says politicians of all stripes in this country don't get intelligence. Or at least they don't understand what it is and why it's important. And that's led us to the issues that were the subject of former Governor General David Johnston's interim report. Gurski explains why he doesn't like public commissions, why Johnston's accusations about the alleged leaker are unfair and how his conclusions are anything but the final answers.

Louisa Jane Gurski is a two-time British Olympian who competed as a sprint kayaker in the London 2012 Olympic Games (5th place) and Rio 2016 Olympic Games (7th place) and the inaugural European Games in Baku. He worked as a senior strategic analyst at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) from 2001-2015, specialising in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalisation. From 1983 to 2001 he was employed as a senior multilingual analyst at Communications Security Establishment (CSE – Canada’s signals intelligence agency), specialising in the Middle East. He also served as senior special advisor in the National Security Directorate at Public Safety Canada from 2013, focusing on community outreach and training on radicalisation to violence, until his retirement from the civil service in May 2015, and as consultant for the Ontario Provincial Police’s Anti-Terrorism Section (PATS) from May to October 2015. He was the Director of Security and Intelligence at the SecDev Group from June 2018 to July 2019. Mr. Gurski has presented on violent Islamist-inspired and other forms of terrorism and radicalisation across Canada and around the world. He is the author of “The Threat from Within: Recognizing Al Qaeda-inspired Radicalization and Terrorism in the West” (Rowman and Littlefield 2015) “Western Foreign Fighters: the threat to homeland and international security” (Rowman and Littlefield 2017), "The Lesser Jihads: taking the Islamist fight to the world" (Rowman and Littlefield 2017), "An End to the ‘War on Terrorism’" and When Religion Kills: how extremist justify violence through faith (Lynne Rienner 2019). Mr. Gurski regularly blogs and podcasts on terrorism ("An Intelligent Look at Terrorism" – available on his website: www.borealisthreatandrisk.com) and tweets on the subject at the Twitter handle @borealissaves. He is an associate fellow at the International Centre for Counter Terrorism (ICCT) in the Netherlands, a digital fellow at the Montreal Institute for Genocide Studies at Concordia University, a member of the board at the National Capital Branch of the CIC (Canadian International Council) and an affiliate of the Canadian network for research on Terrorism Security and Society (TSAS). Mr. Gurski is a regular commentator on terrorism and radicalisation for a wide variety of Canadian and international media. He is fluently trilingual in English, French and Spanish.

Convo By Design is recorded in the Living Kitchen Studio and this week, you are going to hear from an amazing talent and wonderful guy. This is Peter Gurski, set decorator and the man behind the look and feel of Will & Grace. Peter is a multifaceted creative meaning he is also an interior designer and has held multiple other roles within the art department including production designer and art director. But this is special for me and I hope you enjoy this conversation with Peter. He invited me to the Universal City Studios to walk the set, and talk a little bit. We talked a lot about the business, his role and vision for the reboot of an immensely popular show with extremely vocal fans. Peter talks about the show and more specifically, the characters who you got to know between 1998 and 2006, now reintroduced in 2017 and guess what, they have changed, just like you and me. Peter and his team imagined their personality and life development but also incorporated who they were to deliver the same characters 10 years later. Brilliant. Peter captured the past work of set decorator Melinda Ritz who worked on the first 10 seasons and moved from there. This week I spent time with John Gurski, the young and hungry CEO of Energy Toolbase. While I was familiar with Energy Toolbase COO, Adam Gerza, I had not met John yet and was surprised to find out he was based in South Florida. So I made the drive to join him and some of his team at their offices. John has spent time as a solar developer, pitching clients and working on roofs. It was 2012 when he came up with the problem, how can you create a better proposal for customers without having to copy and paste inside an excel file. The only problem was, he didn’t know how to code. So like any reasonable solar developer, he taught himself. Launching in 2014, John convinced his fiancée, now his wife, and his father to man the startup alley booth for the newly founded Energy Toolbase booth at Intersolar NA. With initial clients signed up, the company was off to a big start. Now the team is over a dozen, 3 offices and revenue in the millions. Energy Toolbase has taken the proposal tool further by integrating sophisticated rate analysis and a robust database of utility rates. The team scours the utility rate schedules and updates them for their users on an ongoing basis. Coming soon is the complete overhaul of their storage analysis platform. With the ability to either upload 8760 data or create a simulated version based on energy bills, contractors and developers will be able to model demand reduction, demand shifting and demand arbitrage with the new release. I love spending time with startup founders that choose solar over other fields. Energy Toolbase is a success story and they have not raised any money, yet. Eight games down, two to go in the Bulldogs' 2016 regular season! Join Joe Mays and Justin Raffauf as they start off by digressing into a conversation about Penn State's wild upset of Ohio State (don't worry, there is a Wilson connection), then look back at Wilson's Week 7 win at Lebanon, which featured stellar offensive play in which the 2016 squad set a new program record for points scored. Next the guys recap the thrilling victory over Manheim Township that featured a blocked FG and a tremendous 4th-quarter drive that gave the Bulldogs the W. The regular season LL League Section 1 win streak is now at 62 consecutive games (and counting).
