In this episode of Bend Don't Break, Zak Boone, VP For College Advancement & Executive Director, COCC Foundation, shares his extensive experience working in Central Oregon's nonprofit sector since 2007. Fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has launched a new alcohol-free perfume for dogs called 'Fefé' in honor of Domenico Dolce's poodle, but not all vets and pet owners agree it's safe or appropriate. The perfume costs 99 euros ($108) for 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) and has been certified suitable for animal use. It follows a Safe Pet Cosmetics protocol designed to ensure a degree of safety of cosmetic products for animals comparable to that required for humans, Dolce & Gabbana said. "Through a compliance recognition to this protocol granted by Bureau Veritas Italia, participating companies demonstrate their sensitivity in creating products that ensure the safety and respect of the animal, in accordance with established standards," the company said in the statement issued for the launch of the perfume. Bureau Veritas Italia is a publicly held company that provides inspection, laboratory verification and certification services. All of the dog owners consulted agree that the fragrance is "gentle and well accepted by their pets," and veterinarians approve of the product, according to the company web page dedicated to 'Fefé', which cites performance reviews by veterinarians and customers. But not all veterinarians agree on the use of perfumes for dogs, as they may interfere with the animal's sense of smell and cover up bad odors that could be a symptom of diseases. "Dogs recognize themselves by smells, they recognize a person by a smell," said Federico Coccía, a veterinarian in Rome who holds a doctorate from the University of Teramo. "When the dog arrives, he sees you, wags his tail, but first smells you and then recognizes you because you are stored in one of his 'smell drawers.' Therefore, this world of smells should not be changed," Coccía added. Coccía said becoming aware of an ongoing dermatological disease can be problematic if dogs' natural odors are covered up. "In the case of sebaceous dermatitis, for instance, the smell somehow completes my diagnosis." "The smell of breath, the smell of earwax are disguised by the perfume. Community colleges, which usually see an increase in enrollment during a recession, were hit particularly hard by the pandemic. Nationally, enrollment at community colleges fell more than 10% in the last three years. This fall, that trend seems to be improving. For Central Oregon Community College, enrollment is up over 20%. We talk to Alicia Moore, Vice President of Student Affairs at COCC, about what those numbers mean, and what the future of community college looks like.

After four years in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam era, Bob Shaw met his wife Cheryl while working for a college ministry. They started a family and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Bob entered the world of recreational vehicle sales and service. After eight years with Beaver Coach – which brought him to Bend - a more serious pursuit of a career, not just a job, began. Bob had been a public speaker for years and secretly hoped for a job where he could speak for a living. A unique chain of events carried him back to college at COCC and a job as a waiter in a casual fine-dining restaurant at the age of 45. He was then introduced to working as talent in commercials by a co-worker that was doing the same. A couple of years of making commercials opened the door for a successful audition as the weathercaster on the live morning news program. A short while later, Bob transferred to Mississippi State University, completed a meteorology training, and is now celebrating years “in the business” and on NewsChannel 21 at Sunrise. Viewers will be sad to know that Bob is retiring this summer, and so we just had to have him on the program. In this edition of Bend Don't Break we talk about his favorite parts about doing weather, where he got his slogan "Have a Sparkling Day," and more.

Last month, Central Oregon Community College in Bend launched a four-week-long training course for students to become certified peer support specialists. A peer support specialist is someone with lived experience and formal training to help others with recovery from substance use disorder or mental illness. According to a recent study by researchers at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, the number of certified peer support specialists would need to increase by nearly a third to meet the demand for substance use treatment services in Deschutes county alone.This is the first peer support training course offered in central Oregon, according to COCC, and is aimed at helping to meet a growing need for mental health services and substance use treatment, especially in rural communities. Joining us are Jenny Cruickshank, an assistant professor of health and human performance at Central Oregon Community College; and Terry Rogers, who completed the peer support specialist training course and is the founder of Bible Street Ministry, a faith-based nonprofit helping people experiencing homelessness in Bend.

I realize that people of all ages are constantly opining about the trappings of technology, while, (ironically), usually typing on a keypad and/or staring at a screen. Let's be real, you're reading this on such technology. Just because people are hypocrites, it doesn't mean that they are also wrong. To be clear, I love technology and believe, on a whole, this is an amazing time to be alive vis a vis innovation. More information and access is always a better thing, even when it exposes how stupid and dangerous a society is. The truth is, though, that we can't, individually fix this rotten cultural cesspool we live in, but we can do some high-quality maintenance on ourselves. Countless studies show time after time, the dangers of screen time. Did you know there's even a name for it (of course there is, everything has a title…) it's called Screen Dependency Disorder, which is a stupid name because it doesn't create an effective acronym. Obviously, Screen Addiction Disorder would have been perfect, but SAD was already taken by the totally fake and made-up Seasonal Affective Disorder, the condition of being depressed because of the change of seasons…pro-tip…fly somewhere, the weather will be different, dipstick. But, seriously, SDD? No? Ok, how about LIME; Less Internet More Everything-else? Do we have to go with LIMEE? That sounds so un-American. In any case, the keyword was moderation. Almost everything in life should be done in moderation. If we do anything all of the time, it is simply too much, and it's also ruined. Yes, even the good stuff…that's how we got Sex and Porn Addiction for God's sake! According to data, the average American spends 7 hours and 11 minutes looking at a screen every day…that's more time than we spend sleeping! On Tuesday May 4, The Tuesday Point talked about substance abuse and recovery during the pandemic and as we emerge. This is a passionate and powerful discussion about an important topic in our and every community. We were joined by Monica Vines, Program Director for the COCC Addiction Studies/Human Services program since 2007, who has also taught Psychology both full time and part time both at COCC. Brian Hodges also joined us. Brian is a graduate of both the Certificate in Addiction Studies and the Associate of Applied Science in Addiction Studies at COCC (graduating with High Honors both times) and has been a professional in the SUD field since 2012, primarily working in Outpatient settings. He is currently a supervisor with BestCare Treatment.Damian Cusumano is a June 2021 COCC graduate with a transfer degree He will be attending the Bachelors in Social Work program at PSU with a goal of earning his Masters degree and becoming a Licensed Professional Social worker. He is coming back to school after a previous successful career.

I attended Northern Michigan University on a Nordic ski scholarship, where I was a two-time All-American in cross country running. No, not a typo. I “tried really hard” to be a skier, but was a much more talented runner. After graduated NMU with a B.S. in Exercise Science, I pursued a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from Montana State University. Bozeman Montana is where I really fell in love with running in the mountains. But it wasn’t until I moved to Oregon that I started to dabble in trail and ultra races. While starting to explore the trails a bit more, I completed my Ph.D. in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology from Oregon State University. My dissertation study examined the impact of exercise intensity on appetite hormones in elite female runners. Fitting. Upon graduating, I worked as a professor at Oregon States and COCC (community college in Bend, OR), but ultimately decided I wanted to pursue nutrition and coaching. In 2012 I started a nutrition business, working to help all walks of people learn to eat better for health and/or performance. I did a bit of coaching on the side, but really started coaching with CTS at the end of 2019. I’m thrilled to be working with athletes, as I learn as much from them and they do from me.I currently compete, mostly in ultramarathon races, but also dabble in a bit of everything: nordic skiing, skimo, cyclocross, gravel races, adventure racing, climbing, paddling, etc. You name it, I’ve probably tried it. My favorite place is in the mountains, preferably the Alps. Hi there! I'm Bryan Huskey, a photographer, filmmaker, and general outdoor ding dong in Boise Idaho. At this point- many of you who are listening are probably my buddies, but for the new folks that have stumbled in here, here's a little intro to get a feel for who I am and what to expect from this podcast.  First off- seriously thanks for listening! The response to this first series will have a lot to do with if, or how much effort I put into this podcasting endeavor. I mean lets be honest, people have to like this to make it worth continuing! K- so my earliest memories are with my dad as he fished for salmon and steelhead along the coastal rivers of the Oregon. From Tillamook, we moved to Bend in 1985, and that's where I lived till 2000. After high school in Bend I went to COCC, worked construction, then eventually got into the cottage industry of composite aircraft that boomed out of Redmond in the 90's.   SO- During my childhood and teen years I fell into three main passions- Hunting, Fishing, and riding & racing anything with two wheels.

See the full story with pictures at https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/ In September of 2016, Otsuka Pharmaceutical and RIKEN opened the RIKEN CDB-Otsuka Pharmaceutical Collaboration Center (COCC) inside the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (RIKEN CDB), which is located in the city of Kobe. The COCC will be involved in collaborative developmental biology and regenerative medicine research projects with the goal of investigating disease mechanisms and discovering new drugs and therapeutic applications. The purpose of the COCC is not only to make new discoveries through such collaborative research projects, but also to train the next generation of scientists by hosting joint seminars and offering opportunities for personnel exchange. In connection with the opening of the COCC, the first steering committee meeting was held on September 6 at Otsuka in Tokushima to discuss the Center’s plans for collaborative research, information exchange, and personnel exchange. The RIKEN CDB Director, Hiroshi Hamada, M.D., Ph.D., presented a brief overview of RIKEN and the research in which it has been involved, and the RIKEN CDB Team Leader, Minoru Takasato, Ph.D., gave a presentation on kidney regeneration research using human-derived cells, which led to an animated discussion with Otsuka researchers. RIKEN CDB is a world-class research institution for basic research in the field of developmental biology and regenerative medicine. RIKEN has recently become known for its participation in the first clinical research in the world on the use of iPS cells in age-related macular degeneration, which has become an increasingly common cause of blindness in recent years. The COCC will be involved in joint research projects aimed at developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and kidney diseases, which have been important areas of research for Otsuka.
