How did a British ghost story set in a Liverpool council estate became America's most haunting urban legend? In 1992, director Bernard Rose transformed Clive Barker's British ghost story, The Forbidden, into one of horror's most intelligent and thought-provoking slashers. But the inspiration ran deeper than fiction. The tragic 1987 murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy, who called 911 claiming someone was breaking into her Chicago apartment through her bathroom mirror, is a chilling real life inspiration to one of cinema's most enduring, and gothically romantic horror icons.Candyman is not just a horror movie; it's a reflection of societal fears, racial injustice, and the haunting legacy of violence against Black people in America, specifically black men. The film, set in the Cabrini Green housing project, serves as a backdrop for a story that's both supernatural and tragically real. Tony Todd's portrayal of Candyman is chilling yet tragic, highlighting the character's backstory as a victim of racial injustice rather than just a typical horror villain. Helen Lyle, a white woman who becomes entangled in the Candyman myth, exposes the privilege and naivety that often accompany the quest for truth. The contrast between her character and the realities faced by the residents of Cabrini Green is not just a plot device; it's a commentary on who gets to tell stories and which voices are heard.I dare you to say his name five times... UnHerd's Contributing Editor Jonny Ball (aka Despotic Inroad) sits down with Lord Maurice Glasman, the Labour peer and political theorist behind Blue Labour, at Labour party conference 2025 in Liverpool. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under fire and polling as the least popular on record — Glasman argues that the party faces a battle for its very soul.In this conversation, he traces the history of the movement he founded, Blue Labour, and its critique of the Labour party's transformation into what he sees as metropolitan and liberal, detached from its working-class roots. Glasman highlights how the working class and young voters are drifting to Nigel Farage's Reform, why the best predictor of whether you vote Labour is whether you went to private school, and what it would take to reverse Labour's decline: a renewed focus on industrial strategy, job creation, and working-class empowerment. Can Blue Labour stop Reform's rise and save Labour? Could Reform actually replace Labour as the voice of working people? And what, if anything, should Labour learn from MAGA and Trump's populist success? Hosted on Acast. They share their views on where things have gone wrong for the Reds since opening up that five point gap at the top of the Premier League, also remembering they are actually still top of the table! For Jay and Jim it's not so much one major flaw that needs fixing as perhaps a list of smaller problems where tweaks, and maybe some patience, are required. For Jay there's a question mark about whether the sides Slot is putting out have enough leaders, and identifies at least one spot in the side where that might make a difference. Listen in as the duo discuss their thoughts on what's changed between this season and last, the defeats coming after a run of wins that some are describing as lucky. For Jim one major flaw isn't so much about conceding goals, it's more about being unable to create enough quality chances for what is on paper a mouthwatering array of attacking options. Attention turns to the weekend's Chelsea clash, a chance to stop this blip turning into something more before yet another international break. A win would restore so much confidence in the camp, and Jim and Jay both urge a return to basics this weekend before using that international break to dig deep and study the details of Liverpool's recent difficulties. If anyone at the club tunes in they'll hear views on everything from selection dilemmas at right-back to the challenge of getting the best out of Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo, not to mention the new boys. It's a search for answers along with honest reflections on the midfield shuffle and how small tweaks, not wholesale changes, could help Liverpool get back to winning ways. As bad as it might seem right now to be at the top of the Premier League table, and still on course to finish in the all important top 24 of the Champions League mad League phase, as has been pointed out on the show many a time, there's always a way to help cheer up. Because there's always Everton. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Cannon Stats podcast is back and the mood in Arsenal land is positive with Arsenal closing the gap on Liverpool while slaying two bogey teams in the process. Things are looking up for Arsenal, while they are looking down for Liverpool who are hitting their first patch of adversity under Arne Slot. Adam and Scott are together here talking about the standout performances from Arsenal's matches against Newcastle and Olympiacos. There is a lot of good overlap and positives to take from both games. The second part of the episode looks ahead to what might be the softest part of Arsenal's schedule all season after they made it through the rough opening set of fixtures. Arsenal's Next five is West Ham (H), Fulham (A), Crystal Palace (H), Burnley (A), and Sunderland (A) before the November international break. There are no easy matches in the Premier League, but this might be the least challenging overall. This is also a chance to pick up points on what Arsenal did last season, where they managed just 8 points from these five, losing twice and drawing one. What makes this especially tantalizing is that this “easy” run corresponds with Liverpool and Manchester City looking at some challenging fixtures. The next five matches are shaping up as a major opportunity for Arsenal to potentially take the lead in the Premier League, and if things break right, maybe even open up a bit of a gap. That all starts this weekend with Arsenal hosting West Ham and their new manager. Tim Shipman and Claire Ainsley from the Progressive Policy Institute join Patrick Gibbons to reflect on Labour's party conference as it draws to a close in Liverpool. This conference has been received positively for Labour but, on the final day, a hustings for the deputy leadership demonstrated that divides remain under the surface. Is Lucy Powell versus Bridget Phillipson a case of left versus right in the party, or is it more about the outsider versus the insider? And, as a leading political commentator declares Labour to now be the 'party of the professional middle class', what does the contest tell us about who Labour needs to appeal to? Just search ‘Quite right!' wherever you are listening now. This week, Michael and Maddie report from the Labour party conference in Liverpool and unpick Keir Starmer's big speech. Was his attempt to reclaim patriotism for Labour a genuine statement of values – or a clumsy exercise in stereotypes about steelworkers, chip shops and football nostalgia? And why does Labour's attack line on Nigel Farage risk sounding like political ‘nuclear warfare' that could backfire outside the conference hall? And what about the Tories? With Labour bringing the fight to the Reform party, where does this leave Kemi Badenoch and the Conservatives ahead of their conference later this week? They then turn to Donald Trump's extraordinary new Middle East peace initiative. With Benjamin Netanyahu on board and Tony Blair drafted into the proposed ‘peace board', is this a serious diplomatic breakthrough or a surreal ‘fever dream' that only Trump could cook up?Next, another peace proposal doomed to fail: Emma Watson's attempt to reconcile with J.K. Rowling after years of public estrangement. Was Watson's olive branch an act of goodwill or a late recognition that the cultural tide has turned? And why did Rowling's sharp response strike such a chord with women who felt abandoned during the height of the trans debate?Produced by Oscar Edmondson, Oscar Bicket and Matt Miszczak.
