Trying to be invisible. Quietly sneaking through the woods, waiting, listening, and observing. Meticulously searching the forest with your eyes for a flicker of movement or a fraction of a silhouette. This is the essence of still hunting. In this episode, I am joined by my hunting mentor, Geoff Horsfield. Geoff taught me how to hunt. Geoff is a master still hunter, and I can still remember our first hunt together 35 years ago where he showed me how to sneak up on a whitetail. A wayward final stretch has cost Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox a second win on the DP Tour this year, finishing in a share of second at the Soudal Open in Belgium.Fox blew a three-shot lead with 11 holes to play, losing a head-to-head battle with England's Sam Horsfield who captured his third DP World Tour title.Horsfield shot a final round 68 to finish at 13-under, two shots clear of Fox and German Yannick Paul who both took home €166,385 ($NZ277,043) for second. It was there for the taking for Fox who went into the final round with a one-shot lead, and stretched it to three after bouncing back from a second hole bogey with three straight birdies. With Fox and Horsfield tied at the 16th tee, the Kiwi went bogey-birdie-bogey to card an even par 71 and finish two shots behind the Englishman.Fox will now head jets to the US PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Oklahoma for his 12th major appearance. A consolation from today's result is that the second placing secures him a spot in next month's US Open at The Country Club in Massachusetts. The Kiwi world number 106 could also jump back into the world top 100 tomorrow as he takes plenty of form into the second major of the year and his first since last year's Open Championship. It's been an impressive run of form for Fox since returning to Europe following a two-month break in New Zealand in the wake of his victory at the Ras al Khaimah Classic in February.Today's result at the Rinkven International Golf Club in Antwerp was his third straight top 10 finish and places him sixth on the DP World Tour standings. Fox has already amassed €566,439 (NZ$943,160) in prizemoney in 2022 as he heads to the lucrative US PGA Championship where first place earns US$2,160,000.But there will probably be a feeling on that flight across the Atlantic Ocean that he let one get away leading what wasn't the strongest chasing pack with a three-shot lead and 11 holes to play.Starting with a one-shot lead, Fox lipped out a par putt at the second hole to move back to 10-under and a tie at the front with what was just his second three-putt of the week.He then took the solo lead straight back with a 26-footer for birdie at the third and followed that up with a brilliant approach at the fourth to get within five feet and another birdie. Fox then nearly chipped in for eagle at the fifth and rolled in a third straight birdie to take a three-shot lead.Horsfield made an impressive 33-foot birdie to cut the lead to two at the seventh hole before Fox picked up another shot with a nine-foot birdie putt at the eighth. The lead was reduced to two at the turn when Fox found the trees on the par fourth ninth, and then stuck by a tent for his third shot and needed a drop. A brilliant chip gave Fox a chance to save par but he walked away with bogey.Fox still had a two-shot lead on the 12th tee but a birdie for Horsfield on the par three and a bogey for Fox at the 13th saw the two players level with five to play. The Kiwi gave up the lead for the first time since the third round on the 16th hole with his fourth bogey of the final round but rebounded with an eagle putt on the penultimate hole, getting to within two feet to take birdie. Horsfield however responded with a birdie putt to retain a one-shot lead heading to the last. The Englishman found a sandy path with his tee shot on the last but hit a brilliant approach to the green while Fox mis-hit his second from the rough and found the greenside bunker, all but conceding the tournament.- by Cameron McMillan, NZ Herald

Mike Horsfield returns to the program to discuss what lessons were learned while leading in new territory during an international pandemic. He self admits he gets geared up and actually enjoys "a train wreck" to lead through and COVID 19 certainly pushed him to a new level of crisis management. Communicating with your people and being transparent is the key to working through the huge challenges this pandemic has thrown at the business world and the health of the communities our businesses are in. What lessons did we learn and where do we go from here. Business leadership was and still is being tested at the highest level. What moves you make and how you can reassure your employees is paramount right now. Mike gives great insight into his thought process and how he believes coaching and mentoring should be used in organizations . He is also running for Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association President position with election results revealed in early November.

Male lyrebird just going bonkers outside my window while I was trying to work today. The track is noisy as heck, but this is actually POST noise reduction; the noise you are hearing is actually cicadas trying to get laid every bit as hard as the lyrebird is. Their song isn't quite as pretty, though.
Grant Horsfield, founder of Shanghai-based resort and co-working space operator naked Group, always sees things differently. When others saw dilapidated farm houses in China's countryside, he envisioned seclusive luxury resorts. Now, a year after entering China's co-working space, the South African entrepreneur is convinced that the future of his multi-pronged hospitality and property business lies in fast execution. The tomorrow of the co-working business model is moving HSBC or Coca-Cola from their "ugly offices" to much cooler and lively spaces, such as his own shared office unit naked Hub, Horsfield said at the annual MIPIM Asia Summit in Hong Kong last week, not hiding his disdain for "cubicles" and "grey boxes" commonly seen at rigid corporate headquarters. Co-working should not just be offering cheap work environments for start-ups, a concept all Chinese co-working space providers hold dear, Horsfield argued. After all, start-ups take up only a small share of the overall office market. The founder of popular eco-friendly resort naked Stables seems to have struck a chord with some big corporations already. Chinese logistics firm Debang has taken up some space at naked Hub in Shanghai. And at a panel discussion at the MIPIM Summit, a gentleman from a big insurance company asked how to better utilize a 1,500-cubicle office that sits empty half of the day. New York-headquartered co-working pioneer WeWork Cos., which raised nearly half a billion led by China's Hony Capital and Legend Holdings in March, is perhaps one step ahead. It has secured many multinationals including Microsoft, HSBC, Sprint, Bank of America, Salesforce, Dell and General Motors in its locations worldwide. But when it comes to the Chinese market, Horsfield plans to outpace WeWork by adding more locations much faster. His naked Hub will have 36 locations by the end of 2017, while WeWork's current blueprint calls for adding three more in China next year, in addition to its current two locations. Even though Horsfield disagrees with his Chinese competitors on co-working's future direction, he is very much on the same page in terms of expansion, because he understands "China speed" is essential in defining success and failure in the country. UrWork, China's biggest co-working start-up, is planning to add 50 locations next year, in addition to 36 it would have by the end of this month. Kr Space wants to add 60 next year to its current portfolio of 28. Others including Fountown, 5Lmeet and Nash Work are opening hundreds more throughout China. With six new resorts planned in Moganshan, Suzhou, Shaoxing, Chengdu and Chongqing, in addition to rapid growth in the naked Hub business - which just raised US$33 million led by Hong Kong-based Gaw Capital - naked Group has now transformed itself into a powerful boutique player moving at breakneck speed. This behind-the-scenes frenetic pace contrasts with the idyllic feel its resorts convey to guests. An anonymous industry insider said that he is concerned that the company might be growing too quickly, a mistake suffered by many companies. Horsfield brushed off such concerns, saying "We just enjoy what we do." And Horsfield not only pours soul and energy into his projects, he literally puts his heart into his work. During the early days of the company, he suffered a mild heart attack amid a cash squeeze after the global financial crisis. To learn more, read on to a Q&A of our conversation. In this episode of the Tech in Shanghai podcast I speak with one of China’s most prolific expat entrepreneurs, and the founder of the ’naked’ brand and group of companies, Mr. Grant Horsfield. For several years Grant and the team at naked have run one of the most popular and environmentally conscious resorts in all of China, which have a strong and loyal following amongst both local and expat clientele. Then last year in 2015 they made plans to expand their operations. I was first confronted with these plans when I was passing through their original naked co-working space on Fuxing Lu in Shanghai, called nakedHub. I went upstairs and saw six or 7 posters with BEAUTIFUL photos of new projects and accompanying descriptions, as well as a number of scale models for these projects. I was blown away. Not only at how AWESOME the projects looked themselves, but that naked was embarking on such big and bold expansion plans, I loved it. Among the new projects were several new eco-resorts throughout China, a sailboat product based out of Thailand called naked Sail, an enormous immersive learning complex for both children and adults called naked Discovery, and most obvious to people living in Shanghai, the aforementioned nakedHub co-working spaces, which burst on the scene to tremendous enthusiasm, and which have proliferated to several more locations throughout the city, with apparently at least 10 planned to be operational by the end of the year! But of course, 'naked' didn’t start as a runaway success, with a diverse portfolio of successful businesses and a brand that customers have come to love. In fact it started with a guy from South Africa, who after living for a year in Shanghai in 2006, was dissatisfied with the lifestyle that was on offer, so much so that he set out to change it. With little money, no hard plans, and a chorus of people telling him he was crazy, Grant set-out into the unknown world of being an entrepreneur in China. What followed was a wild and chaotic journey of intense struggle and hard-fought triumph that was almost unbelievable. In this show, Grant and I start by discussing the early days of his journey, and the things that kept him going, when every sign in the universe seemed to be telling him he wasn’t going to be successful. It’s a testament to the type of attributes possessed by the truly great entrepreneurs, of which Grant is certainly one, of grit, determination, hustle, passion and ultimately an unwavering belief in themselves and what they are doing. If this sounds cliche, keep listening, you’ll see what I mean. We then fast forward to today, where the big task in front of Grant is not to survive, but to maximize the potential of his brand and company, and continue to be pioneers in creating businesses that people love. That said, it’s a big leap going from one to several world-class resorts, as well as launching a booming co-working brand, re-imagining education and all the other things naked is now involved in, so I ask Grant what it’s like both personally and organizationally to scale up so boldly and so quickly. Of course, I also hit Grant with some of my favourite advice questions, which given this guys track record, I highly recommend you stick around to hear. Enjoy!
