On this week's episode of Women Speak — a segment on Northeast Newscast — hosts Northeast News Editor-in-Chief, Julia Williams and former Missouri House Representative for District 19 Ingrid Burnett sat down with CEO of Early Start, June McDaniel to kick off a new series, where we highlight women in education.Throughout this episode, McDaniel discusses her journey of how she went from working a professional career in human resources (HR) to shifting into early childhood education — including how her previous skills have transferred into her current work. She delves into some particulars of Early Start and how the program works to best serve its students. McDaniel goes on to discuss her personal background as a Kansas City native and how her personal experiences have helped her build connections with students and families today. Williams shares a history of a few women who pioneered early education — leaving an impact on what it is today. This includes an education system — The Montessori Theory — which was developed in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries that is still utilized in many early childhood institutions today, including Early Start. Burnett and McDaniel how these systems have and are currently working in the education system. Cohosts and McDaniel additionally discuss ways for community members to get involved in early childhood education through City, County and State boards and commissions. The story goes that Kansas City was just supposed to be a pit stop on the road back home for Frank Boal. He'd cut his teeth in a large television market and eventually go cover the boyhood teams he once cheered. But once he got to Kansas City he loved it. The people reminded him of people in Pittsburgh, his hometown. They're warm, charming and love their teams. Frank became part of the fabric of Kansas City, emerging as one of its most recognizable media personalities ever to walk across the TV screen as he carved out a 36-year career mostly as a sports director. It's a body of work that is tough to match and why the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame is proud to induct Boal with the Class of 2017. Frank spent 28 years at WDAF-TV in Kansas City and then finished his career at KSHB-TV, all the while working for 810 WHB Radio and earning respect from the athletes and coaches he covered.

In recent years, most Kansas City suburbs have cut transportation funding, which means fewer and slower buses. Local officials are racing to fix that. Plus: High school graduation rates in Kansas are higher than ever. But some people worry that the growth of credit recovery programs could be lowering standards for students.
On this episode presented by Busey Bank, I'm joined by Adam Tilford, co-founder of Session Taco and the business mind behind concepts like Milagro Modern Mexican and the brand-new Lapez Mod Mex, started out studying physical therapy before realizing… he hated touching people. After a quick detour in real estate, he joined forces with his brother and chef, Jason, and took a $20,000 leap into the restaurant world. That leap turned into a mini-empire—with seven restaurants, a solid wholesale tortilla chip business, and a cult following across St. Louis and Kansas City. In this episode, Adam pulls back the curtain on what it's really like to build—and rebrand—a restaurant group, how a lawsuit forced a bold pivot, what he loves about hospitality, and the key metrics he actually cares about as a business leader. We'll talk growth, leadership, chip sales, and fire rebuilds. Let's roll… #tacos #stlouis #disaster #covid #insurance #brothers

He was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri in his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks' campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master's degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson's gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success. He is the author of Power Forward: My Journey from Illiterate NBA Player to a Magna Cum Laude master's degree. https://www.deantolson.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

In this encore episode of The Autism Little Learners Podcast, Tara reconnects with Cari Ebert, a respected speech-language pathologist and passionate advocate for neurodiversity-affirming practices. Together, they revisit a powerful conversation that redefines what play and connection can look like for autistic children. Cari shares valuable insights into why autistic play is real, meaningful, and should be honored as such. She explains how deep interests can be a gateway to learning, joy, and communication—and how adults can build stronger relationships with children by embracing these passions. The episode also explores the idea of presuming competence and cultivating supportive environments where every child feels seen and valued. Whether you're hearing this conversation for the first time or listening again, it's packed with practical ideas and heart-centered strategies to help you support autistic children in ways that truly honor who they are. Key Takeaways: Autistic children experience and express play in unique, valid ways. Deep interests are powerful tools for building trust and engagement. Connection and respect must come before compliance or correction. Play is not a prerequisite for learning—it is learning. Presuming competence opens the door to authentic communication. Environments that support individuality fuel growth and joy. Reflecting on our practices helps us better support each child.
