Sebastian Junger came as close as you possibly can to dying. While his doctors struggled to revive him, the veteran reporter and avowed rationalist experienced things that shocked and shook him, leaving him with profound questions and unexpected revelations. In his book, In My Time of Dying, he explores the mysteries and commonalities of people's near-death experiences. In this episode, which originally aired in May 2024, he joins Sean to talk about what it's like to almost die and what quantum physics can tell us about the afterlife. A violent undiagnosed aneurysm should have killed Sebastian Junger, a war reporter, a best-selling author, and an Academy Award winning documentarian. Junger came as close as anyone we know to dying, but he returned from the abyss and reveals what it was like. For years Jason and Peter have heard about so-called NDE's – near-death experiences where the clinically dead - miraculously resuscitated - come back to life with eerily familiar stories. Whether it's long-dead relatives speaking to them from the afterlife, or encountering an enormous tunnel, illuminated by a brilliant, welcoming light…. are these stories evidence of a “Great Beyond”, or simply wild spasms of a dying brain? After Junger's NDE, he launched an investigation and uncovered a possible third answer that may expand our understanding of the universe itself. Really, no really. *** IN THIS EPISODE: The visions he saw that changed his conception of the universe. Who encouraged him toward the void? When given the option, most people will go out of their way to avoid risking life and limb. However, the world is full of people who face untold dangers daily, by circumstance or by choice, and walk through life with a greater understanding of death than many possess. After a career as a war reporter and examiner of dangerous occupations, Sebastian Junger would've considered himself well-versed in the realities of dire consequences. Yet when a quiet afternoon at home resulted in a first-hand near fatality, he found himself ill-prepared to examine his experience. In his newest book, In My Time of Dying: How I Came Face to Face with the Idea of an Afterlife, Junger reaches into the darkness of near-death and the many questions waiting on the other side of survival. In this introspective memoir meets heavy-hitting medical drama, Junger sets out to grapple with the seemingly unanswerable queries and concerns that haunted him after suffering a nearly lethal ruptured aneurysm. Weighing a background that praised the empirical against the old ghosts that appeared to him at his most critical moments, atheist-identified Junger ventures even further into the unfamiliar by following a line of deeply human questions. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? And what happens to a person, emotionally and spiritually, when forced to reckon with such existential questions? In My Time of Dying explores the intersection of science, religion, and philosophy and turns the examination inward when pondering how we best continue to live once we become truly aware that no one is immune to death. Sebastian Junger is a best-selling author, award-winning journalist, and documentary filmmaker with a focus on stories of war, occupational risk, and trauma. His reporting and writing have been featured in Vanity Fair, where he serves as a contributing editor, National Geographic Adventure, Harper's, and The New York Times Magazine. His previous publications and works include the books The Perfect Storm, War, Tribe, and Freedom as well as the Academy Award-nominated documentary film Restrepo. He is the founder and director of Vets Town Hall, an organization that provides veterans with opportunities to speak about their experiences. For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him. “It's okay,” his father said. “There's nothing to be scared of. I'll take care of you.” That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day when he was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. This experience spurred Junger—a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical—to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? How do we grapple with phenomena that science may be unable to explain? And what happens to a person, emotionally and spiritually, when forced to reckon with such existential questions? In My Time of Dying is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part rational inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery. Sebastian Junger is The New York Times bestselling author of Tribe, War, Freedom, A Death in Belmont, Fire, and The Perfect Storm, and codirector of the documentary film Restrepo, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He is also the winner of a Peabody Award and the National Magazine Award for Reporting. Shermer and Junger discuss: his near-death experience and his curent beliefs • NDEs and OBEs • hallucinations • altered states of consciousness • sensed presence effect • sleep paralysis • why there is no “proof” of an afterlife • living forever • belief in life after death • empirical truths vs. mythic truths • longevity and how to live longer.

Let's say you were hit by a car, you're bleeding out, you're on the way to the hospital but you just have this sense that you're not going to live, and you see visions of someone you knew in the past, maybe a mother or a father, and they're saying, "Don't worry, we're here for you." Come down this light at the end of a tunnel. Does that change your experience of life if you then survive? Well, we're going to hear from Sebastian Junger, who wrote "In My Time of Dying: How I Came Face to Face with the Idea of an Afterlife." Let's rewind to 1988. Metal underwent a massive transformation, with flashy glam metal and its catchy hooks coexisting alongside darker, more intense sounds on MTV's Headbangers Ball. Enter Glenn Danzig, fresh from his work with Misfits and Samhain, who was about to turn the metal world on its head with his new project. This shift was catalyzed by the involvement of legendary producer Rick Rubin, who signed Danzig to his label, Def American Recordings. Rubin, known for his work with diverse acts from Slayer to the Beastie Boys, recognized the unique potential in Danzig's vision. Released in 1988, Danzig's self-titled album brought a brooding, blues-infused metal sound unlike anything else. Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City, the album blended raw power and dark, occult themes, setting a new standard for the genre.

I circle back to this amazing show, because in episode 249 I had the raw recording not the DADGAD remaster as I'd thought. This show fixes that and highlights this great show in all its glory. My absolute favorite performance of In My Time of Dying, along with Nobody's Fault But Mine, and Over the Hills. This show is so so so good.

This show is amazing. The sound quality is bassy with some distortion but DADGAD does a great job balancing this into a paradoxically well balanced/bass heavy recording. The music is magical and the band are locked and playing well. Jimmy's control and technique are in top form and all the musicians are listening, and responding, to each other as they jam. Magic is a word that applies here. I play a fun and tight In My Time of Dying and the longest No Quarter on record (33 minutes!), and it's amazing!

This week's guest is Johnny Kelly. Johnny is mostly known for his tenure as the drummer for Type O Negative, but his full resume includes Quiet Riot, Danzig, Silvertomb, A Pale Horse Named Death, Kill Devil Kill, and his latest endeavor, Eye Am. Johnny is a hell of a hard-hitting player, but his awareness of dynamics and the development of a theme while crafting parts is the reason he's in the third decade of a very fruitful career. I hope you enjoy the 5 records that shaped Johnny Kelly into the drummer he is today. Cheers SUBMIT YOUR LISTENER PICKS HERE JOHNNY'S BIG FAT FIVE

Physical Graffiti Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Led Zeppelin returned from a nearly two-year hiatus in 1975 with the double-album Physical Graffiti, their most sprawling and ambitious work. Where Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy integrated influences on each song, the majority of the tracks on Physical Graffiti are individual stylistic workouts. The highlights are when Zeppelin incorporate influences and stretch out into new stylistic territory, most notably on the tense, Eastern-influenced "Kashmir." "Trampled Underfoot," with John Paul Jones' galloping keyboard, is their best funk-metal workout, while "Houses of the Holy" is their best attempt at pop, and "Down by the Seaside" is the closest they've come to country. Even the heavier blues -- the 11-minute "In My Time of Dying," the tightly wound "Custard Pie," and the monstrous epic "The Rover" -- are louder and more extended and textured than their previous work. Also, all of the heavy songs are on the first record, leaving the rest of the album to explore more adventurous territory, whether it's acoustic tracks or grandiose but quiet epics like the affecting "Ten Years Gone." The second half of Physical Graffiti feels like the group is cleaning the vaults out, issuing every little scrap of music they set to tape in the past few years. That means that the album is filled with songs that aren't quite filler, but don't quite match the peaks of the album, either. Still, even these songs have their merits -- "Sick Again" is the meanest, most decadent rocker they ever recorded, and the folky acoustic rock & roll of "Boogie with Stu" and "Black Country Woman" may be tossed off, but they have a relaxed, off-hand charm that Zeppelin never matched. It takes a while to sort out all of the music on the album, but Physical Graffiti captures the whole experience of Led Zeppelin at the top of their game better than any of their other albums. If you missed our first show on Skid Row, you can listen to it here. Please follow the show on Twitter. If you want to email the show we can be reached at MandatoryMusicAndCD@gmail.com. Let us know how you rate Physical Graffiti If it is the best album you've ever heard, it goes to Paradise City If it is really good, but not perfect, it spends time with Dr. Feelgood If it is solid, but not perfect, it goes to the Crossroads If it is mostly crap with a hidden gem or two, it goes to Skid Row If it is the worst album ever, it goes directly to Hotel California for all eternity where you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. #mandatorymusicandcd --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/support

This simple track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Secrets." When I put it together, I was inspired by the simplicity, yet pure angst in Soundgarden's version of "In My Time of Dying." Quite the juxtaposition considering I've tilted it "Whisper." I guess whispers can be quite powerful, as well!

In Stereo.Typen #022ChrisCornell erinnert sich Marc an die Begegnungen mit Cornell, der uns auch selber aus seinem Leben erzählt. RIP Chris Cornell, Live to Rise!

In this video, we're looking at the 6 songs from Bob Dylan's first album that launched his career and where he drew his inspiration from. While my sources say he wasn't a song thief, I think you'll be able to draw your own conclusions after this video... Bob Dylan is definitely one of the most influential singer-songwriters that ever lived. I mean, the guy has a Nobel Prize in literature. But if we look at the beginning of his career, to the very first set of songs he recorded and started selling commercially, how many of them were covers? I'm not saying that just because Bob Dylan did covers that he means he stole. My point is more nuanced: did he give credit? Did he pay homage to those folk heroes who he is standing on today? To help understand, we're looking at the 6 songs from Bob Dylan's self-titled first studio album. #6: "Song to Woody"Bob Dylan was a huge fan of folk musician, artist, and writer Woody Guthrie. In fact, Bob Dylan went so far as to style himself after Woody Guthrie. In paying tribute to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan wrote "Song to Woody," one of the few originals on the self-titled album. Funny enough, the melody for "Song to Woody" is directly lifted from Woody Guthrie's song "1913 Massacre." Did Bob Dylan use the same melody to pay homage to Woody Guthrie? Or, did Bob Dylan decide to lift the melody because it was just that good? Let me know what you think in the comments! #5: "Highway 51 Blues"Written by a blues pianist by the name of Curtis Jones, "Highway 51 Blues," is another song Bob Dylan covered on his self-titled album. Curtis Jones' vocals and piano playing is spectacular on this song and sounds drastically different from the Bob Dylan cover. I love listening to an original tune that I've only heard covered. "Highway 51 Blues" is no exception. I always thought Bob Dylan wrote this song, but I'm happy to know that the original Curtis Jones song is just as awesome and inspiring — even if it is on piano! #4: "You're No Good"A one-man band rockin' a twelve-string, Jesse Fuller wrote "You're No Good." Like my experience with "Highway 51 Blues," I came to love and appreciate the original after I started doing this research. While I can't feature "You're No Good" performed by Bob Dylan or Jesse Fuller due to copyright, I can feature Jesse Fuller's "Railroad Blues." He is one incredible, driving singer with a classic acoustic blues sound. #3: "In My Time of Dyin'" While Bob Dylan's cover of this song is stunning, if you trace it all the way back to the beginning...it's even more stunning. The earliest recording of this song comes from Blind Willie Johnson. Blind Willie Johnson has a voice that just sends shivers down your spine. I've always loved his voice and I know you NEED to check out his performance of "In My Time of Dyin'." Bob Dylan's version is definitely the neater, cleaner, the more commercial sound of what Blind Willie Johnson created and passed on. #2: "Fixin' to Die"It was sometime in college, when I was maybe 18 or 19, that I first heard this song covered by Bob Dylan. When I heard it, it sounded like Bob Dylan transformed into a completely different person. His singing was just unlike the other songs he played. As I came back to this song, I discovered that this song was written by Bukka White. I was stunned because Bukka White is such an incredible played that you NEED to check out. With a distinct style and voice, Bukka White is clearly being channeled by Bob Dylan in his cover of "Fixin' to Die." Let me know what you think in the comments though! #1: "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"Written by Blind Lemon Jefferson, this song has become a standard in the American songbook. So many artists have covered this song over the years, and some better than others. To give you a sense of Jefferson's style, I played "One Dime Blues" for you. While Bob Dylan's version of "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" is similar to Blind Lemon Jefferson's, it's just a different version altogether. So...is Bob Dylan a song thief? No. But follow me down this train of thought: Bob Dylan choosing these songs was a way of him simultaneously honoring and making his mark on the folk world. Bob Dylan. When I Got Troubles (Privatindspilning, Hibbing, maj, 1959)In My Time of Dyin’ (fra Bob Dylan, marts, 1962)Song to Woody (fra Bob Dylan, marts, 1962)House of the Rising Sun (fra Bob Dylan, marts, 1962)Blowin’ in the Wind (Live, april 1962) Mixed Up Confusion (Single, november, 1962) Tomorrow Is a Long Time (Live, april, 1963)Masters of War (fra The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, maj, 1963)A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall (fra The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, maj, 1963)Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right (fra The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, maj, 1963)Lay Down Your Weary Tune (Live, oktober 1963)The Times They Are a-Changin’ (fra The Times They Are a-Changin’, januar, 1964)Only a Pawn in Their Game (fra The Times They Are a-Changin’, januar, 1964)Boots of Spanish Leather (fra The Times They Are a-Changin’, januar, 1964)My Back Pages (fra Another Side of Bob Dylan, august, 1964)Motorpsycho Nightmare (fra Another Side of Bob Dylan, august, 1964)To Ramona (fra Another Side of Bob Dylan, august, 1964)Foto: Columbia Records (1962)
