Scott has traveled the world for the past 30 years, living in 52 countries, serving in 2 combat tours including the delivery of regional and global projects as a global consultant. Being a past victim of burnout to the point where he actually died, his journey to recovery helped him develop a personalized growth roadmap entitled TIME | LIFE | SELF which is derived from his life's lessons learned. Additionally, Scott offers Leadership Transformation services helping executives and managers recognize their organization's performance thresholds and how to counter polluted circumstances while reducing stress and burnout. In Scott's words:  Little did I realize how many directions one's life could go. As a child, I dreamed of exploring the world over. Serving in 2 combat tours at 18 years old forced me to grow up quicker than others. Experiencing death gave me a different outlook on the value of life. Promising myself to live my life to the fullest, I sought a life that would keep me moving, learning. Working unthinkable projects in harsh conditions, until I couldn't. Leading to my death. Why this and the ensuing depression happened is how I created my TIME | LIFE | SELF program. 3 top tips for my audience: 1. Time Management Tips 2. The three discuss how the tech industry in particular and connected organizations in general have transitioned from protecting devices from attacks to accepting they will be hacked and mitigating losses to modern threat intelligence and modeling strategies. They then look at this evolution through the lens of employees, who are handling and working with sensitive information and IP, working from home.DON'T  FORGET  TO REGISTER  FOR A FREE EMBEDDED WORLD-IN-A-BOX! In Scott's view, the CMMC presents obstacles – such as an assumption of on-premise infrastructure – that may make companies just starting out reconsider serving those markets and subsequently impact the nation's cyber readiness. Finally, Brandon fills in for Perry in this week's Tech Market Madness. A recent report from Dragos indicates that threats to industrial control systems tripled in 2020,  while 90 percent of organizations  don't  have visibility into what's taking place beyond the IT/OT network boundary. Brandon investigates just what could be going on back there as he reviews how another industrial cybersecurity firm,  Claroty, uncovered vulnerabilities in  WIBU Systems' CodeMeter licensing software deployed on ICSs worldwide. Sharon Brizinov, a Claroty researcher, demonstrates just how easy it could have been to compromise systems running the software, both locally and remotely.

Scott Livengood Reframes Entrepreneurship for New Audiences

Interviews

Why isn't everyone an entrepreneur? Perhaps we don't explain it well enough or in language that lets everyone in on the wonders and the thrills of the pursuit of new economic value. Scott Livengood chooses reframing — thinking in new and different ways about an established concept — to widen the audience for entrepreneurship. Reframing entrepreneurship in the context of popular culture. Scott recently published a multimedia e-book called The Startup of Seinfeld (Mises.org/E4E_99_Book1). In the book he articulates a comprehensive survey of concepts and principles of entrepreneurship, including the entrepreneurial mindset, risk and uncertainty, intellectual property, business models, planning, finance, and many more. The cultural frame Scott selected is everyday city life as illustrated by the characters and situations and market interactions in 180 episodes of Seinfeld. In Scott's hands, this is not a show about nothing, but about entrepreneurship. The multimedia approach is facilitated by a series of links in the e-book to YouTube video clips of short scenes from multiple Seinfeld episodes that are illustrative of entrepreneurial concepts and principles. You'll find the concepts of economic calculation, opportunity, product design, arbitrage, intellectual property, judgment, planning, uncertainty, and several more. The text accompanying the videos is an exposition of economic principles underlying these concepts. There's a lot to learn, and it's fun! A major point to take away is that entrepreneurship is everyday life: people imagining new ways to serve others and meet their needs, and employing design and economic calculation, judgment under uncertainty and marketing and communications to facilitate a valuable exchange. Reframing the teaching of entrepreneurship and strategy. The philosophy underpinning the teaching method in the e-book has been forged in the university classes and seminars that Scott teaches, and for which he prepares meticulously and conducts comparative research into learning and teaching effectiveness. He has found that embedding the principles of entrepreneurial economics and business strategy in cultural iconography illustrated via multimedia technology results in a significant increase in student engagement, participation, learning, and understanding. Humor, for example, is a language and a style that can draw students in, engage them at a deeper level of curiosity, and help to deliver the serious economic message. This kind of approach helps students think of entrepreneurship as more of a normal life choice for themselves — a life of creative problem-solving. Students can think about their ends and the means open to them in a different way. If they are inclined to “social entrepreneurship”, they can learn that that simply means a distinctive identification of ends, without any attempt to operate outside the profit-and-loss system of sound entrepreneurial practice. Reframing entrepreneurship for the disadvantaged. Scott's ultimate test for reframing entrepreneurship for a different audience in a different culture has been presented by his teaching for Education for Humanity. This is group associated with his university, Arizona State, and dedicated to helping displaced refugees. These students who are displaced from their homelands by war and conflict and find themselves in refugee camps in countries that are alien to them, like Uganda and Lebanon. Their prospects for further education are narrow. What are the pathways out of the poverty and restrictions of refugee camp life? Scott's chosen task is to teach them entrepreneurship. Where to start? The basis is empathy — digging deep to understand their situation, circumstances, and context, and understanding them as individuals and identifying their needs and wants. Language becomes critical — using concepts and examples they can relate to. It's contextually impractical to teach entrepreneurial finance in terms of bank loans and venture capital. But Scott can teach individual and family budgeting: how to calculate and manage income and expenditures, how to save, how to build up sufficient savings to make a capital purchase, and how to generate an income stream from that capital. The particular capital artifact may be a second cow for a head of household that uses the first one for feeding the family. The family has knowledge and skills in milking and animal husbandry that can be put to use in their new entrepreneurial business of selling milk and dairy products to other families, or bartering for other kinds of nourishment. Eventually, the family may advance to the use of micro-loans or other forms of micro-finance and expand their entrepreneurial holdings. Scott can now teach about the trust nexus of paying interest and paying back loans, and about return on investment and capital accumulation. Progress comes quickly as a result of starting in the right place. Entrepreneurial communities. One of Scott's realizations has been the power of entrepreneurial communities. In the refugee camps, family entrepreneurs collaborate, learn together, assist each other, and seek to raise the prospects of the entire community. Failure to pay back a loan, for example, would be a setback for the group, and group norms and institutions arise to guard against such a loss of trust. Scott sees direct application of this learning about normative entrepreneurial community action in other parts of the world, including rural communities here in North and Central America, and in the inner city initiative of Entrepreneur Zones in the US. By embedding entrepreneurship in culture, the collaborative service ethic emerges more clearly and emphatically. #123 My awesome guest this week is Scott Carney, an investigative journalist, anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author of 'What Doesn't Kill Us'.   I invited Scott on to the show to talk about his new book 'The Wedge:  Evolution, Consciousness, Stress, and the Key to Human Resilience'. And with everything that is going on in the world right now, there couldn't be a better time than now to have this conversation.    In Scott's own words: In 2011 I wrote an article for Playboy about the dare-devil ice guru Wim Hof with the intention of showing the world that he was a charlatan. But it didn’t work out the way I had expected. I tried his training and was surprised that the method worked. So instead of debunking him, I became the first journalist to take Hof seriously. I was something of an evangelist for Hof’s method of ice baths and breathing techniques and did some pretty crazy things--like walking up Mt. Kilimanjaro without a shirt at a pace that the U.S. Army predicted would kill me. What Doesn’t Kill Us told the story of my journey. As Hof became an international superstar, I began to wonder how much further I could push the lessons I learned with him. I wanted to do more than see how our bodies reacted to the cold, but in every environment. The sensations that we feel under stress—in heat, cold, sensory deprivation, while we're afraid—mirror physiological changes in hormones, metabolic function, and memory formation. Those reactions usually all considered autonomic functions, meaning we don't have conscious control over them. However, since we can decide what environments we inhabit, we actually have the power to change our underlying programming.  The key is to paying attention to physical sensations and then modulating our emotional responses. The result is a concept that I call “The Wedge.”  You can think of The Wedge as a way of creating a little space between stimulus from the response. Over the course of two years I started to develop new environmental training techniques. I confronted fear at a cutting-edge neuroscience laboratory at Stanford and learned a dance that involved throwing kettlebells between partners where one false move could either break a bone. I met masters of mental misdirection in Latvia who took me through a five-hour sauna, based on their traditional medicine system. I experimented with breathing techniques that took me to the cusp of transcendence; I floated in sensory deprivation tanks, and ultimately ended up in the Amazon jungle with a shaman who promised me either madness or universal truth. Ridley Scott’s Alien turns 40 years old. While David’s out of town, Editors Bro & Calvin convene to discuss an absolute masterclass in horror filmmaking. The year was 1979 and there was a crowded field of top tier cinema rounding out a decade of reinvigorated auteur filmmaking, with Alien at the top of the heap, representing the pinnacle of a decade finely calibrated for horror and sci-fi. The taut, otherworldly perfection of the film combined with a forward-thinking documentary aesthetic, created a pitch-perfect thrill ride of a horror picture. Making its worldwide premiere at 1979’s Seattle International Film Festival, Alien stunned audiences and created a brilliant new groundwork where the creatures of horror’s past could be elevated through the established social climate. In Scott’s film, we explore the big themes of motherhood and gendering, and why this film cast a social light on the common horror film. In this interview we talk with our good friend and colleague, Scott Koskoski, Senior Performance Consultant and Partner at BrightDot about the critical role that emotional intelligence plays in a nonprofit's fundraising success. This is an eye-opening topic that is sure to add value to any fundraiser or nonprofit leader's day. We also take a few minutes at the end of the show to talk with Scott about the state of fundraising after what appears to have been a less than great 2018 year-end fundraising season. Show Transcript: Andrew Olsen:                  Okay, we are recording now. Andrew Olsen:                  Good afternoon, everyone. I'm really excited to have you on today to talk to our listeners about how you and your firm approach philanthropy, because I think it's ... A lot of people consult in this space and a lot of people talk about how to fix fundraising, how to coach fundraisers, but so many of them focus on the tactics. And I love that you guys get so far above that and really deal with some of the root issues. I'm excited to talk about that with you. But before I do that, I just want to turn the mic over to you and ask for you to tell us a little bit more about yourself. Scott Koskoski:                  Andrew, thanks. Roy, thanks. Subscribe to Social Business Engine Apple Podcasts |Stitcher |Google Play | Google Podcasts LinkedIn post effectiveness is somewhat of a mystery. As Bernie’s guest, Scott Ayres says, “LinkedIn is like the Uncle who always comes to the family reunion with a great casserole, but you forget is there.” So Scott and his team at Agorapulse decided to do a social media experiment to see exactly what post types are effective on LinkedIn. Scott is a Content Scientist for Agorapulse - he runs experiments as part of the company’s Social Media Lab. During this conversation with Bernie you’ll hear how he runs experiments using different content on the various social media platforms, verifies it through the expertise of an actual data scientist, and publishes the results. Scott’s findings from a recent experiment about LinkedIn posts is the special topic of interest for this episode. Sales Professionals Need Social Best-Practices Based on Data, Not Anecdotes Any Google search for “How to post effectively on LinkedIn” or “LinkedIn best-practices” will provide hundreds of results, but how do you know which of the posts returned are actually trustworthy? The leadership at Agorapulse, a social media scheduling tool, has dedicated a significant portion of its monthly budget to run data-driven social media experiments through what they call “The Social Media Lab.” Scott Ayres leads that team in carrying out all kinds of tests and trials based on this pattern: Problem -> hypothesis -> research -> findings With the help of an actual data scientist who is on staff at Agorapulse, the team is uncovering best-practices and publishing them publicly for anyone to learn from. Our team here at Vengreso is very keen on LinkedIn, so Bernie asked Scott to elaborate on the findings from a recent SML experiment about the kind of LinkedIn posts that perform best. You will find the results surprising. Text-Only Posts on LinkedIn Are Viewed Massively More Than Others One of the principles you hear touted about using social media effectively is that it’s a visual medium - so posts that include images, gifs, videos, etc. are more effective. Scott Ayres wanted to test that hypothesis, especially as it has to do with LinkedIn. His team at the Social Media Lab used three accounts with large followings to test the following hypothesis - Text-only posts would garner the lowest amount of views. The team posted a variety of content types over a specified period of time, and tracked the engagement for each. What were the results? In Scott’s words, “Text-only posts on LinkedIn had an increase of 1,069% views.” That’s the type of data that helps those of us in sales and marketing understand how to garner better engagement for the sake of establishing relationships and uncovering needs. Listen to this podcast to hear more about how posting on LinkedIn create more sales conversations. How Effective Are Hashtags on LinkedIn? It hasn’t been around for long, but LinkedIn now supports the use of hashtags. It’s easy to forget that the functionality even exists on LinkedIn but those who are utilizing hashtags are seeing great results - and the data Scott and his team have been able to compile from their experiments prove it’s not just anecdotal. The Social Media Lab experiment about LinkedIn hashtags shows that posts using at least one hashtag get 29.59% higher impressions. Based on those findings, Bernie and Scott discuss the ways hashtags can be used to coordinate sharing efforts by a sales or marketing team, how searches can be made using hashtags. If you’re interested in increasing your activity on LinkedIn and think hashtags could help you do that, listen to this episode to get Scott and Bernie’s advice on the issue. Valuations, Gross Sale Price and Net Proceeds… What Really Matters? I had a great conversation with Scott Miller in this episode and we tackle some of the most important concerns every business owner have has when transitioning their company, how does gross dollar amount turn into net proceeds in the bank? AND how long does it take to get it and what do I have to do to get it? Scott is a serial entrepreneur as well as a CPA. He knows what it’s like to be on every side of the fence. Just how can you protect those net proceeds from all the clever tricks a buyer and their attorney might pull? Keep listening for the answers, or if you’re pushed for time, read on below for the show summary…. What is the difference between valuation and net proceeds? The first question to ask, post-valuation and at the beginning of the negotiation after the buyer tries to wow you with the gross sale amount, is “what are the terms?” The figure given as a valuation and the offer that is in the Letter of Intent will be subject to many things, i.e. earn-outs, seller financing, management agreements. The best way to approach this is to get the baseline figure agreed upon WHILE knowing the EXACT net proceeds dollar amount you are trying to get. Then know where you have leverage with the buyer and know as much information you can gather about why they would want to buy you so you have the upper hand any time there is a negotiation. THEN if you have to give and take KNOW what you are giving up as part of the process just in case whatever you agreed upon doesn’t follow through. Who prepares the documentation for the transaction? Typically the attorney for the buyer sits in the driver seat of the transaction and drafts up the purchase agreement and sends it to the seller’s attorney. So therefore, documents tend to be drafted with all kinds of intricate caveats to provide a cushion for the buyer. For example: if it is in the buyer’s best interest to have an asset sale with the classifications of revenue a specific way to help them recapture the expenses and depreciate the purchase in a certain way, they will do that. REGARDLESS of what it means to you and your net proceeds. A few simple reclassification moves might make the buyer a ton more money but it could mean the difference between capital gains and ordinarily income for you (or 30% +/- in taxes!). How do you guard against getting burned in negotiations with a buyer? In Scott’s words: “Professionals who are well-versed in the world of transactions are really worth their weight in gold. They’re able to distance themselves from the emotion that business owners have typically invested in their company. If things are said during the negotiations to the owner. it’s like calling your kid ugly” Asset sale vs. stock sale A stock sale is typically favored by the seller because the stock will all be taxed as capital gain, so the buyer is assuming any liabilities going forwards. In most cases a buyer will prefer an asset sale because they get to allocate the purchase price to assets that typically promise the highest return on capital. For the seller, many of the items they’re selling are ultimately taxable as ordinary income.  What should a seller do to make sure they do well from an earnout? They should attach the earnout to something that’s easily verified, i.e. sales. It’s very easy for the buyer to take it down the road of profitability, but there is a so much more that can be massaged when it comes to profit numbers. A proper exit planner rather than just a standard company attorney will be able to iron these things out. How w

It makes sense that when your Amazon business is up and running well, you may want to add a totally different brand or niche to your overall business strategy. There are so many opportunities that kind of approach can provide. When heading in that direction it might be tempting to open a second seller account with Amazon. Is it legal (with Amazon)? Should you do it? Scott’s got some very clear ideas about the subject and is eager to share them with you on this episode, so be sure you listen to get some perspective on whether or not it’s time for you to create a second seller account. Why do you want to open a second Amazon seller account? Many people who are successful at Amazon private label sales are entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs are known for having tons of ideas bouncing around in their heads. One of the struggles every entrepreneur faces is keeping their own ambition and eagerness in check so that they don’t get too strung out. It may seem like a great idea to build a new brand but most people take that on far too soon. On this episode you’re going to hear Scott’s thoughts about why you should reconsider that choice and what things you can do instead to maximize your profitability and business. What are some of the hassles of opening a second Amazon seller account? When you open a second Amazon seller account you’re not breaking any rules. Amazon will let you do it, but they will want to see certain things in place. For example, you’ll be required to have a different business entity for that account than the one you have on your first account. You’ll also be required to provide different banking information. These are just two things you’ll have to restructure in order to open a second account - and there’s even more besides these. Scott’s going to walk you through every one of the things he can think of that makes it difficult to manage and deal with two brands and two Amazon accounts. It’s all on this episode so make sure you take the time to listen. Building out a product line instead of starting a brand new brand. Instead of building a second brand, what would happen if you totally maximized every opportunity you have in your current private label market? In Scott’s experience, most people who are selling on Amazon have not done their due diligence to build out their product line and opportunities to the greatest effect. They’re missing things like sales funnels, email lists, external sales channels, social promotions, and more. Where are you in the stages of building out your current product line? On this episode Scott will show you the kinds of things you need to consider when thinking through whether you should open a new Amazon seller account or not. Why an external sales channel is the next step for any Amazon business. Scott strongly believes that every Amazon private label seller should work hard to establish a sales channel outside of Amazon after sales on Amazon have become consistently successful. He subscribes to the idea that you should never put all of your business eggs in one basket - and though Amazon is a very LARGE basket, it’s still only one sales channel. On this episode Scott walks through the main ways that you can build your own sales machine independent of Amazon and tells you why you should focus your efforts there instead of building a second brand on Amazon. It’s a great summary for you to consider, on this episode. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE AMAZING SELLER [0:03] Scott’s introduction to this episode of the podcast! Every one of us has a legacy that has bred us, the things that have made us into the people that we are. Sometimes those are negative influences, sometimes they are not so good. On this episode of the show Scott shares a conversation with his Dad that he recorded recently to share some of the legacy of his own life. In Scott’s eyes his Dad is a great example of someone who was always willing to work hard and earn the money needed to care for his family and take care of his obligations. He’s also the one who taught Scott to hustle and figure out ways to build his own businesses. You’re going to enjoy the homespun wisdom and insights Papa V. has to share, on this episode. From egg sales to a chicken farm to a draft notice. Scott’s father was an entrepreneur from an early age simply because he had to be. He wanted extra money to buy his own lunch at school and his father didn’t have the money to give him. So his dad arranged for him to get some chickens and begin selling eggs. That business grew into a chicken farm and in time he was doing quite well. When he was 22 years old he was drafted, but signed up for the Navy instead. Even in the Navy his Dad found an entrepreneurial opportunity sewing patches on uniforms, stocking up on cigarettes and reselling them to fellow soldiers at a higher price, and even making loans at interest. You can hear this powerful example of old fashioned entrepreneurial hustle on this episode. There’s always a way you can find to get the money you need. On today’s episode of The Amazing Seller Scott shares a conversation with his Dad who was his example of hard work and determination. He showed by his actions that he could always figure out a way to make the income needed to meet his obligations and take care of his family. As you listen to this episode, keep in mind the obstacles you face and think about the opportunities you may have every day to increase your income and make a way to build your income. There is a way. Find it. Partnership woes and things you should watch out for. Neither Scott nor his Dad believe that partnerships are always terrible or to be avoided. But they both have seen the negative side of partnerships and have lots to say about the various cautions that you need to be aware of when considering a partnership. On this episode you’ll hear the story of their partnership woes and how you can avoid making the same mistakes. It’s a great story of persistence, learning from mistakes, and building a successful business on the coattails of a business mess. Hard work and persistence will ALWAYS pay off for you, if you take action. The main purpose of this episode of The Amazing Seller podcast is not to teach you tricks and strategies for doing private label sales better. It’s a deeper and more general lesson than that. This one brings you an old school example of how determination and drive to succeed will enable you to be successful in the end. Scott’s Dad (Papa V.) has lots of stories to share and a great deal of wisdom to impart so you’d be wise to listen and get some ideas about the kind of work and dedication it takes to build a business you can be proud of. Scott Savage – a Twitter friend! - found me through one of my all-time favorite episodes – Hank Fortener. Hank and Scott have many things in common – they are both speakers, they are both pastors, they both have this wonderful combination of skill and insight that makes them both really good at what they do, but also WISE at what they do. These are my favorite kinds of guests – guests that dig deeper with me on why this matters. In Scott's life - whether as a blogger or speaker, his goal is to empower us with new perspective - and he makes good on that promise. And here’s what I really appreciate about Scott – he is so clear and honest on the WORK that it takes to become a transformative speaker. He believes in the opportunities that are in front of us when we “take the stage.” And he prepares, invites feedback, polishes, invests himself… and then starts over again the following week. That kind of dedication and commitment has earned my respect – and I can’t wait for you to also lean into his insight.   Show highlights: On Becoming Better [Tweet "#Speakers: "Nothing can replace experience." @scottsavagelive on @ThisMovedMe"]   On the show, we talked about: Scott's journey to experienced and skilled speaker, learning from those speakers he admired and that moved through him The importance and challenge of the rhythm of the pastor's speaking schedule What "transformation" looks like - and how Scott nurtures his talks to move his audience using a "Star Moment" - a moment they'll always remember And the role of feedback, failing and mining your life's bumps to bring insight to your audience [Tweet ""I got better because I gave lots of bad talks and got brutal feedback." @scottsavagelive on @ThisMovedMe"]   Resources/Links: Scott's Blog - Scott Savage Live Scott on Twitter  (he shares good stuff there - check it out!) Gary Vaynerchuck - and moving to more authenticity and courage Ira Glass - here's a link to his storytelling series on YouTube, which is awesome Blaine Hogan (who said, "Scratch when you don't itch.") Evernote - a digital filing app that makes it easy to collect, organize and stay inspired [Tweet ""The messages I give are the ones that have already wrecked me." @ScottSavageLive on @ThisMovedMe"] This Moved Me Moments: SALLY: I auditioned for the Listen To Your Mother event here in the Twin Cities! It was a moving moment for me because I haven't auditioned for anything in quite a long time - so it was good to be nervous, and good to put myself out there. [Good news! I got in! More on this soon.] For your viewing pleasure, take a look at one of my favorites on the LTYM YouTube channel! SCOTT:  Scott reminded us about the "me too moments" that can be so powerful in our talks. We think we're the only one, but when we hear another person's story we can find the universal in someone else's specific. I'm grateful, ******* And - THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! Dr. Nick Morgan (a guest on This Moved Me) created the Presentation Prep Course. It's like having Nick coach you - which is no small thing! Nick is the ultimate pro - and I myself have walked through this course. It's so incredibly helpful and full of insight and tools. If you are prepping for a presentation and can't afford the costly hours of hiring someone live - check out this e-course!  And, I cannot forget the editing geniuses at We Edit Podcasts! They are so on the ball.  Just last week I hadn't heard from my editor - which was strange - and so I sent an email expressing my concern. I got a phone call back from the FOUNDER, assuring me all was well. That's what I call service. Please trust me - I have saved so many hours by having these folks take on the nit-picky task of editing my shows for me. If you have a podcast - or want to create a podcast - this is sooooo worth it.

This is the first edition of the Mockingcast, the podcast of Mockingbird Ministries (www.mbird.com). In our first episode, Scott Jones converses with the Director of Mockingbird, David Zahl, about the content of their weekly roundup post “The Weekender”. Mockingbird seeks to connect the Christian faith with the realities of everyday life in fresh and down-to-earth ways. The name was inspired by the mockingbird's peculiar gift for mimicking the cries of other birds. In a similar way, Mockingbird seeks to repeat the message we have heard – God's word of grace and forgiveness. In Scott’s words, Mockingbird is all about “a grace infused and grace entranced spirit of Christian cosmopolitanism.” The post The Mockingcast Premiere Episode appeared first on New Persuasive Words.
