Three, Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, has been awarded a number of licenses by Ookla, a global leader in connectivity intelligence. The results are based on an analysis of tests taken using Speedtest in the second half of 2024. Securing their position as a 5G market leader, Three has been awarded Fastest 5G Network in Ireland for the fourth year in a row, Most Consistent 5G Network in Ireland, as well as winning the Fastest Mobile Network in Ireland for the fifth year in a row. Ookla Speedtest data supports that the elements driving Three's success in 5G technology is due to strong network investment, the deployment of new technologies, as well as the clever use of spectrum which provides both voice and data connectivity. To date, Three Ireland has invested over €2 billion in the development of its network, achieving 99% 4G population coverage and over 92% 5G population coverage - providing customers with the highest level of coverage available in the market and securing their position as industry leader. David Hennessy, CTO Three Ireland and Three UK, said: "Three Ireland is incredibly pleased to once again be recognised by Ookla as having the fastest 5G network in Ireland, as well as the most consistent 5G network. Three has invested significant resources into the development of Ireland's connectivity, achieving over 92% 5G coverage and 99% 4G coverage. As Ireland's largest mobile telecommunications provider, we are acutely aware of the demands and requirements for reliable connectivity, whether for remote working, studying, shopping or streaming. Three Ireland will continue to invest and advance its 5G network, providing customers with the greatest coverage, speeds and reliability available in the market." 5G connectivity gives speeds ten times faster than 4G, with lower latency and greater reliability - enriching all connectivity experiences from amplified gaming to increased streaming and download speeds. The adoption of and access to 5G technology brings considerable added value to Three customers in Ireland, enhancing their lives and how they choose to connect. Three Ireland provides 5G connectivity to all customers across all plans, reaffirming the company's commitment to providing exceptional value and ensuring customers have access to the leading technology available today. Three was also the first Irish operator to launch the next evolution of 5G, 5G Standalone, which has the potential to accelerate innovation across industries and unlock exciting possibilities for businesses and consumers. 5G Standalone is the next advancement of 5G technology - meaning the 5G network operates with a 5G dedicated core network, supporting enhanced speeds, providing minimal latency and enabling higher device density and capacity. In contrast, currently all 5G capabilities rely on a 4G radio coverage footprint and 4G core network, so while speeds are quicker and latency has improved, there is still a reliance on 4G. Three UK vet practices are now offering IVF for cows. It's a common practise for dairy cows to be made pregnant using artificial insemination, but IVF is more specialist. It allows for multiple embryos to be produced from one particularly good cow, meaning the genetics of a herd can be improved more quickly and its health and productivity improved. But it means hormonal treatments and some invasive procedures for the cow - so is it ethical? In a world first, methane from slurry on a farm in Somerset is being broken down and turned into hydrogen gas and graphene. Graphene is a material that was discovered in the UK 20 years ago, and is normally made from mining graphite rock. But a company called Levidian has developed a process which separates the carbon and hydrogen in methane gas, to make graphene and hydrogen. And ten police forces across the country will soon be trialling new forensic technology to help identify dogs involved in livestock attacks. We hear from farmers affected and find out why the police think this new kit will help.Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

CWSI, one of Europe's most experienced mobile and cloud security specialists, has announced it has signed a new multi-million three-year deal to provide and support a mobile security solution for Three UK. Suitable for businesses of all sizes, Three Mobile Protect is an affordable, accessible and easy-to-implement security solution for both iOS and Android devices. CWSI's partnership with Three UK builds on the success of Three Mobile Protect in Ireland, launched in 2020 and extends its well-established capability to the UK market. Powered by award-winning, proven mobile endpoint security software from Corrata, CWSI implemented and supports the Three Mobile Protect service. It was chosen for its in-depth expertise in mobile security and its track record of enabling mobile network operators to bring solutions to market quickly. Three Mobile Protect safeguards businesses against rising mobile phone threats including scams, malware, and data loss by blocking access to phishing sites, malware download servers and unapproved content or services. It also helps organisations to control costs by monitoring the apps, data usage, and roaming permitted on business phones, while also ensuring compliance. Furthermore, Three Mobile Protect operates discretely and locally on the device. There is no interruption to device performance and company data is not sent to the cloud for inspection, a major privacy advantage for businesses and their employees. Commenting on the launch, Snehal Bhudia, Director of Business Propositions & Go To Market, Three UK, said: “This is an exciting partnership for Three Business. The Three Mobile Protect service gives our customers state of the art security protection that will help to protect them from dynamic cybercrime without intruding on employee privacy, helping our customers operate safely and securely, wherever business takes them” Ronan Murphy, CEO, CWSI added: “CWSI is delighted to be working with Three UK to bring Three Mobile Protect to UK businesses, building on the proven model established with Corrata and Three Mobile Protect in Ireland. Given the scale of Three's ambition in the UK business market this has the potential to be a multi-million-euro contract for CWSI. We look forward to working with Three UK, and the broader Hutchison Group, to make simple, effective and affordable mobile and cloud security solutions available to all business customers.” See more stories here. Three UK supermarkets and global food processors Nestle and Tyson, have agreed to try out an eco-label which shows shoppers how sustainable their food is. The system measures carbon emissions, water usage, biodiversity impact, processing, packaging and transport. It will appear on the packaging with an overall rating from A+ to D - and looks a bit like the eco-rating on white goods. Anna Hill finds out more about how it will work. We visit a farm where they're trialling a so called "living mulch" by growing a permanent layer of clover beneath a cash crop like oats or wheat. The aim is that this clover boosts the cereal while stopping weeds from growing, improving the health of the soil, and capturing carbon. It can also be used to graze livestock once the cash crop has been harvested! And we all enjoy walking into an impressive or well-designed building, whether it's a cathedral or country cottage. We hear from a Nuffield Scholar who has looked in to the impact farm buildings can have on people and animals. Presented by Anna Hill Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

Gill Tomlinson: Data Monetization is the ‘Next Big Leap' for Three UK

Gillian Tomlinson, Director of Data and Analytics at Three UK, outlines how the telco is partnering with its holding company on futuristic data monetization projects that will harness the power of 5G Public attitudes towards the UK's 5G rollout may be mixed. But for data and analytics leaders at British telecoms companies, the technology represents an opportunity to explore new data monetization opportunities. As Three UK Director of Data and Analytics Gillian Tomlinson explains in this week's Business of Data podcast, this is something Three built into its digital transformation plans years ago. “[We decided] we had to move our network and our IT stack into the cloud as soon as possible,” she recalls. “We [needed] the processing power in the future. [We] needed to be able to support all that 5G brings. That was really the spur for us.” In recent years, the company has partnered with cloud providers to ensure its data infrastructure would meet its changing needs as it scaled its ambitions and integrated analytics capabilities. “The ultimate goal is, you've got to compete,” she says. “You've got to understand how you're going to compete in future and how the nature of the industry's competition is going to change because of digitization.” Tomlinson argues that success in today's business landscape requires perpetual digital transformation. Companies must constantly innovate to keep step with their competitors, who are also perpetually innovating. “There's no such thing as an end-goal anymore,” she notes. “You've got to be constantly improving, testing, proving, scaling up [and] looking for how you're going to make that next big leap.” Three UK's Data Monetization Plans Enterprises that are sitting on valuable troves of proprietary data are increasingly exploring data monetization opportunities. While the regulatory protections in place to protect consumer privacy when sharing sensitive information are a challenge, these projects are seen as a logical ‘next step' for those looking to drive revenue with data. For Three UK, this means partnering with CK Delta, a holding company within CK Hutchison Group, to provide data support on experimental monetization projects and initiatives. “We're incredibly mindful of anonymized customer information being absolutely critical and the compliance requirements around GDPR,” she says. “But the information we sit on, specifically from a network perspective, is incredibly valuable.” “Our ability to understand, let's say, people's movements and provide that in an anonymized way to the City of London is a valuable insight,” she continues. “It's got a real monetary value attached to it.” She adds: “More recently, we have also looked at a proof-of-concept that we've been working with around flying taxis.” This kind of innovation may be out of reach for enterprises that are still laying the foundations for advanced analytics. But the promise of data monetization is a tantalising one we expect to see more and more companies exploring in future. Key Takeaways Enterprises are eyeing data monetization opportunities. Using data to create valuable new products is a logical next step for advanced data-using companies. Data monetization depends on proprietary data. Companies that can curate their own unique and valuable datasets will be best positioned to succeed with data monetization. Enterprises will struggle without the right ‘data foundations'. Data leaders should ensure their organizations have the right level of data maturity before pursuing these projects.

A drone powered by a fuel-cell, UAS use policy for police, a defensive anti-drone system, UAS training at a community college and at Textron Systems, a backup system for GPS, and the Commercial UAS Modernization Act. News Hycopter Drone Flies for 4 Hours via Hydrogen Power The Hycopter drone from Singapore-based Horizon Unmanned Systems (HUS) uses a hydrogen fuel cell for power. Four liters of hydrogen are stored in the hollow frame, and are converted to electric power to run the motors. This power source saves weight and allows a four hour flight time, two and a half hours with a 2.2-pound payload. Police chiefs group offers drone-use policy In 2012, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Aviation Committee created Recommended Guidelines for the use of Unmanned Aircraft [PDF]. Since then, the Association has worked to develop policy which covers drone deployment, restrictions on use, data retention, and training. Three UK companies to develop new anti-UAV defence system Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics, and Enterprise Control Systems are developing a fully integrated anti-UAV defence system (AUDS). This system combines Ku band electronic scanning air security radar, a stabilised electro-optic director, infrared and daylight cameras, and target tracking software. The AUDS also utilizes a directional radio frequency inhibitor and jammer system. The new system is intended to address threats from malicious micro, mini, and larger UAVs at ranges of up to 8km in remote sites or urban areas and operating from fixed locations or mobile platforms. Sinclair receives first community college FAA UAS exemption The FAA has granted a Section 333 exemption to the Sinclair UAS Training and Certification Center. The exemption allows Sinclair Community College in Dayton Ohio to conduct commercial training and research and development in areas such as sensor integration and testing. It also lets the college expand their commercial focus on precision agriculture, geospatial information, and first responder training. The Training and Certification Center also intends to publish a Journal of Unmanned Aerial Systems twice a year as an online peer-reviewed publication Textron Systems Launches Unmanned Systems Training Catalog Textron Systems Support Solutions has announced an unmanned systems training catalog with a range of unmanned systems coursework. The curricula included classroom and hands-on training using customized materials and training aids. They'll tailor the training to your language, skill level, platforms, and applications. Training can be delivered to your choice of location for both military and commercial missions. US Weighs UAS-Friendly GPS Backup System Girish Chowdhary, an engineering professor at the Oklahoma State University, explains that GPS “...is not a very high integrity signal” and can easily be jammed or overpowered. Enhanced Loran (or eLoran) would cover the continental United States with a low-frequency navigation signal. eLoran signals are 1.3 million times stronger than GPS signals, and nearly impossible to jam. This system is already operating in Europe and parts of Asia. Senators Booker and Hoeven Introduce the Commercial UAS Modernization Act to Streamline Drone Integration On May 12, 2015, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and John Hoeven (R-ND) introduced the Commercial UAS Modernization Act. This would establish an interim rule governing sUAS operations until the regulations proposed in the NPRM are finalized. The act gives the FAA some flexibility on visual-line-of-sight (VLOS), and reduces the regulatory burden for commercial operators. It also creates a new Deputy Associate Administrator for Unmanned Aircraft at the FAA. The intent is to streamline the integration of UAS in the United States.
