And so from that, they are turning towards more video and that they are going to be less of a photo sharing site. And they're looking for more entertaining videos because they realize that that's what their audience is tuning into." - April Meese "Instagram has said that they are going to be changing the platform and they will be changing the algorithm and moving away from photos moving more towards video." - April Meese "No longer just hashtag strategy when before, the way to get found in Instagram was through the explorer tab, through a really strong hashtag strategy. And so now that is changing. They are saying that they're going to ask you what topics you'd like to see, and they're going to suggest different people to follow and things that you might like." - April Meese "They said they're going to use this next six months to try to figure things out. They're going to just test and see what's working. They're looking at the main two platforms, TikTok, and they're also looking at YouTube. And they're going to do those strategies and see what works." - April Meese "So they also said that this platform is or they're going to be focusing their energy on Instagram, as it goes through the changes in the next six months, for creators, for video, for shopping, and for messaging." - April Meese "The CEO of Instagram, he had said in his address that they will actually be going more towards shopping because they noticed that trend during the quarantine times." - April Meese "Google has said that they are going to change the way your website is actually being viewed. So all of your photos on your website and videos need to be optimized for mobile." - April Meese "iOS 15 is going to be how it affects your email delivery." - April Meese Connect with April Meese: aprilmeese.com Email: support@aprilmeese.com LinkedIn Instagram Facebook

KEY TAKEAWAYS:As believers, we have an assurance that “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9a). The New Testament is quick to offer forgiveness for all types of sins for people who confess and repent.Anyone who rejected the sacrifice of Christ for sins would not find any other means of handling sin. We can never repay our debt. It keeps growing. Only Christ, not works, can forgive us and give us lifeThose who reject God and will experience God's hand in judgment should know that it would be a frightening experience. The anticipation of judgment by the living God should fill sinners with dread. For more information about this show, which includes additional notes and details, please visit the show page here or visit our home page at SeekingourGod.comMusicLife of Riley by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3976-life-of-rileyLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

How Do You Protect Yourself From Online Scammers That Prey On Widows/Widowers?

Dr. Kirsten Turkington is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Forensic Nurse Expert. Dr. Kristen has seen her elderly clients go through this form of financial abuse by scammers who are presented as ‘the love of their life’. It’s lonely after you’ve lost someone, but that doesn’t mean you should build a love relationship that’s purely based on how much money you send them. Here are some of the things you need to be aware of.   Key Takeaways: As widowers get so caught up in their grief, they are prime targets for scammers. How does Dr. Kristen help her clients beyond being a nurse? People scamming older women is elder abuse! Susan met an online scammer in Nigeria and was intrigued by how he survived and got these women to send him money. These scammers have a million sob stories in their back pocket. The more people in the family that are involved, the better it is for the loved one being scammed to see the signs. However, a lot of these widows and widowers exhibit addictive personality traits towards this ‘new love’. This isn’t an ‘in and out’ crime. This is a long withstanding crime and it keeps going until the money runs out. This scammer told Susan that when they find out he’s a fake, it doesn’t matter, they still keep calling because they’re emotionally attached. Scamming is a full-time job. By doing a reverse photograph search can prove to you that this is not the person they’re saying they are. This scammer pays to be on Match.Com and just go through the motions of talking to various women. How do you protect yourself from online scammers? Keep your social media profiles locked down. Scammers can get a lot of information off of that. There’s a lot of people on dating sites. If someone is out of the country and you can’t see them within the next 30 days. Just move on! If it seems too good to be true, have a bit of curiosity about it. Dig a little bit deeper. Most of the time, the individual being scammed doesn’t see it as a problem. It’s the family members that become aware of it, and concerned. 9 out of 10 times, your family members want the best for you. Listen to your support network. Suspect someone you care about is being scammed? How can you best approach it without having them become defensive?   Resources: Dr. Kirsten Turkington

Business Unveiled: Expert Tips and Secrets from Top Creative Industry Professionals

If you’re a small business owner or if you’re thinking about opening a small business, understanding financing and credit are so important. It is crucial that you understand what you are doing when you are running or thinking of running a small business. Our guest today, Gerri Detweiler, is an absolute expert on all of the things that you need to know. Even though these are the not-so-fun things about running a business, Gerri actually makes it fun and enjoyable to talk about them. She and I are talking about some of the things you need to know about credit and financing.  If you’re in need of financing, there’s a few things you should know. 2020, crazy year that it was, changed a lot about financing. The usual processes are taking much longer, and lenders are much stricter with their requirements. They are asking for higher credit scores, higher revenue levels, and more time in business than they did previously. You should know that they will look at your business credit scores, and in some cases, your personal credit scores too. Be aware of these things and make decisions with them in mind.  So many of you have wonderful dreams, and you give up so much for them. When you want to fund these dreams, there are other ways to go about it besides second mortgaging your house. Before you do anything crazy, make sure you have a business mentor that you can talk to about your ideas! An easy thing you can try is crowdfunding. There are a lot of other options too, and you should definitely look at all of them before acting.  When handling your finances, you need to keep them clean and organized. Get a separate business bank account and credit card and do not ever use them for things other than business. Keep your personal and business finances separate. Trust me, it will save you from huge headaches. Also, try not to use your account overdrafts. Lenders may look at your accounts and see overdraft usages as risky behavior.  You should try to look at your finances at least once a month. Take time to reconcile, or ensure that your records are accurate, every month. Checking your accounts every month is super beneficial because it helps you learn a lot about your business and what has happened to it on the financial side. If you don’t take time to look at it, you could miss lots of opportunities or problems. All of this stuff is so important, so I hope you take time to listen to the podcast to learn even more!    Main Topics: What to expect when applying for financing Ways to fund your business How to position your business for financial success Things you should look at consistently   Key Takeaways: “As soon as possible, you want to set up the systems so that you can build credit and use credit in the name of your business and move away from the personal financing of your business.” “I never try to shame people because you don’t always know what you don’t know.” “I recommend that business owners make sure that they stay on top of both their business and personal credit.”

Not impossible, just harder.  Utilize your training to prepare you for the trials, even beyond the tasks, but how you go into tests and how you wait for them.  Your dog will read you as you read them. That is what makes a great instructor.  Be grateful that you're around people that are willing to share with you really allows you to absorb what you need to absorb.  Once you understand the big picture, then it is easier to grasp and understand the minutia of what you are doing.  The education of other people is not a threat to you.    "I travel all over the world. HWHR-Why Are You Getting Hot Flushes? Why are you getting hot flushes? This is the question we answer today in our HWHR mini series episode. They are symptoms that many women tend to experience as they transition through menopause. So, in today's episode we give you an insight into WHY they may be occurring and what you could do NUTRITIONALLY to help alleviate them. (01:14) Discussing the potential causes of hot flushes, which are thought to be principally due to low oestrogen levels. But consideration is also given to other factors that are known to exacerbate these symptoms in some individuals including: coffee, alcohol and certain spices.  (06:14) Thinking about hot flushes and how they could impact on running performance directly but also indirectly. Could they affect hydration status? Could they lead to poor sleep, which is well known for impacting on exercise performance? We discuss these ideas here.  (08:58) Moving on to consider how nutrition and a healthy diet could help alleviate these symptoms. Delving into some if the oestrogenic foods known to support hormone balance including: soy and flaxseed. (16:04) Introducing a couple of lifestyle tips that may help reduce the severity of hot flushes (18:28) Key Takeaways: As we transition through mid-life and the peri-menopause phase female sex hormones fluctuate greatly leading to a variety of symptoms, but hot flushes are thought to be associated with LOW levels of oestrogen.  There are several factors thought to exacerbate these VMS including: compromised liver detoxification pathways as well as alcohol, coffee…both of which could impact on optimal liver detoxification.  Hot flushes and night sweats could affect running performance both directly and indirectly through their impact on hydration status and sleep duration and quality.   There are many foods known to help reduce the symptoms of menopause but the most researched one is soy. BUT caution must be observed when consuming soy and its products due to its ability to potentially cause an oestrogen dominant status and the health effects of that.  Lifestyle changes may also influence severity of symptoms and there are simple changes you can introduce that many help reduce them including: increasing your intake of organic F&V – to support the liver and maintaining a cool environment.  But remember there is so much more you could do both nutritionally and with subtle lifestyle changes so do join our FREE TRAINING to find out more or jump straight in and add your name to the waiting list for our HWHR programme, which will be launching soon. Learn how to make the most of the opportunities coming your way in property later this year after the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen in today to discover how to utilise empty retail buildings and convert them into property developments, the importance of creating strong relationships with estate agents as well as learning which areas of property are currently on the rise and which to avoid. KEY TAKEAWAYS: As we progress throughout the year it is likely we will be in a situation where agents are going to be more and more interested in persuading their vendors to do deals. There will be more opportunities as the year goes on. Retail will be one industry hit the hardest after COVID-19, therefore there is likely to be many opportunities to purchase these retail buildings and convert the upstairs of them into apartments or rooms possibly using permitted development whereby you don’t need planning consent. It is important to focus on learning how to develop your relationships with estate agents because it is those guys who will bring you the best deals. In addition, you may find that the cheapest deals will be at the auctions. In a down market, the market will let you pay a lot less than the value. There is currently a high demand for HMO (houses of multiple occupancy) rooms due to many people's personal circumstances. As long as you create a great product and spend on the interiors to make them really high spec, there is a lot of benefit and opportunity when utilising HMO’s. There is likely to be a big demand for going direct to vendors when looking for new investments. We want to change the world, we want to have a positive impact on the planet, and we put that up really high on our list. But the challenge is, in order to do that, you need to have reached an audience and build a tribe. And to do that you need to know some marketing elements. It doesn’t cost a lot of money, it doesn’t require a ton of skill, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist or brain surgeon, it’s really pretty simple to get the podcast up and running. And I consider that then the tip of the spear because it’s also one of those things that you want to kind of like planting a seed and then let it grow over time.” – Michael Neeley “I recommend to my clients, plant that seed, get your podcast up and running. Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation

What will it take to solve many of the world’s most difficult and complex challenges? Rebecca D. Costa is an American sociobiologist and futurist. She is the preeminent global expert on the subject of "fast adaptation" and recipient of the prestigious Edward O. Wilson Biodiversity Technology Award. Her career spans four decades of working with founders, executives and leading venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. Costa's work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, The Guardian, and other leading publications. She presently serves on the Advisory Committee for the Lifeboat Foundation along with futurist Ray Kurzweil and Nobel Laureates Daniel Kahneman, Eric S. Maskin, Richard J. Roberts and Wole Soyinka. Costa was the founder and CEO of one of the largest technology marketing firms in California, where she developed an extensive track record of launching game-changing technologies. Her clients included industry innovators such as Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer, Oracle, Siebel Systems, General Electric, 3M and others. She has been on the forefront of technological and scientific innovation, assisting venture capitalists and large corporations to identify, fund and launch disruptive new trends. Retiring at the zenith of her career in Silicon Valley, Costa spent six years researching and writing the international bestseller The Watchman's Rattle: A Radical New Theory of Collapse. Her follow-on book, titled On the Verge was introduced in 2017 to critical acclaim, shooting to the top of Amazon's #1 New Business Releases. In today’s conversation with us, Rebecca Costa explains how climate change and other world problems remain unresolved because they are similar in nature. The real culprit is our lack of distinction between empirical fact and our beliefs and opinions, leaving us at the mercy of competing interests. Rebecca shows how artificial intelligence-powered predictive models can help us solve these issues, and help us predict future events with unprecedented accuracy, paving the way for leaders to act before-the-fact.  Using real world examples, she demonstrates how the certainty of future outcomes is changing the way business and governments solve problems and preempt danger.  Key Takeaways As a society loses a grip on the difference between an unproven belief and an empirical provable fact, it loses its way. Social and public policy quickly becomes based on opinion. The distinction between what is a scientific and empirical fact and what is your opinion or belief is probably the most important distinction to make in any transformation. There are billions of temperature recordings of the Earth’s surface temperature. Like it or don’t like it, believe it or don’t believe it, it doesn’t matter. The empirical data says that the oceans are warming and the land is warming. We are beginning to see some of the symptoms of that. Record floods, super storms, and other signs that scientists predicted would happen. The predictions on the timeline have been wrong, so it’s easy to dismiss the empirical facts, but that doesn’t change the fact that the climate is changing and it is warming. The political question is now, how much if any has human activity contributed to it? Causation in science is extremely difficult to prove, particularly with something as complex as global climate change. Even if human activity contributed all, part or none, do we have the ability to reverse that climate change? That’s the question to focus on. When it comes to complex problems, the danger people have is they overstate what the empirical data indicates and that will eventually bite you in the behind. Rather than saying something is causal, say it’s correlated. We have to be careful about telling the truth about what we know and what we surmise. If there is any threat that could wipe out the entire species then better safe than sorry comes to mind. We owe it to ourselves to do everything we can, knowing that it may not do anything. But at least we’re doing everything we can. If I have worry right now, it’s that we’re not an empirical-driven world. If I have optimism, it’s that we’re relying more on machines to make decisions on our behalf. And machines do not have beliefs, only data. There can be no social change of any importance without recruitment. When you get into someone’s face and alienate them, call them names, and treat them as they are stupid and their opinions are invalid, you’re doing exactly the reverse of what you intend to do. In order to create social change, you must leverage the media to do that recruitment, to bring the reason you seeking social change into the livingroom of every human being. Make your message compelling and relevant to them. Without critical mass you have nothing. The polarization we see right now between the Republicans and the Democrats is the reason that nothing gets done. They don’t understand that they have to recruit people from the other team. There are many things in life where you may not know that the outcome is certain. So you place really good bets. The bigger the upside and downside the more important it is to place those bets. Unlike previous civilizations we have this tremendous opportunity to allow computers and artificial intelligence to guide our decisions on an empirical and factual basis, in spite of our opinions and theories. The billions of data points that artificial intelligence can observe and analyze data in real time in a dynamic way, is going to overshadow human capability, and is already doing so. What AI and quantum computing has allowed us to do is take millions of facts and very precisely predict whether a future event is going to occur. In many respects, we’re moving into an era where we can avoid many problems – like mass shootings – because we can work backwards to see the data that showed that the mass shooter was moving toward criticality. That data is actually in the public domain. They’re posting their manifestos on social media. Opioid addiction is rampant around the world. Companies like Fuzzy Logix can administer a written questionnaire and look at your health records and determine within 85-90% whether you are genetically predisposed to become an opioid addict before the doctor gives you your first prescription. We’re getting to a point where AI algorithms can do everything from inform judges at arraignment hearings whether the person should be released on their own recognizance, what the bail should be, and whether they should not be released into society. So predictive algorithms can inform us of the likelihood of a future event so we can make better decisions today. But there is a problem with knowing what the future is. In 99.999% of the cases, we can predict what you’re going to do, however there is that small chance that you could intervene through free will. There’s always a chance that you could override, make a different decision and change course. But are we going to bet on free will or are we going to play the percentages? When you know what the future is, you can reverse engineer the decision to avoid a failure or danger. So there really shouldn’t ever be a product launch that doesn’t make it because we have tools that will say, how many will sell, at what price, and when your product needs refreshing or be dead in the water. Where it gets tricky is where computers don’t have any information. Innovation for example. The challenge right now is that the tools to do this are very expensive. In some ways that digital divide is creating a social divide. For those who know what’s going to happen, there couldn’t be a bigger advantage. There are some very fundamental building blocks you have to have in order to experience happiness. 50-60% of your aptitude to be happy and enjoy life is genetically inherited. Approximately one-third is your decisions in life, which makes that one-third extra important because it’s the only part that you can manipulate. Unemployment numbers should not be looked at as an economic barometer anymore. It’s actually tied to people’s ability to be optimistic and happy in life. When you have massive unemployment you are actually building a depressed society. Resources On the Verge (Book) The Watchman's Rattle: A Radical New Theory of Collapse (Book) Connect With Rebecca D. What does the lunar cycle have to do with your menstrual cycle? Registered holistic nutritionist and medical exercise specialist Jenn Pike educates us on how we can sync our cycle with the moon and helps us understand our bodies and ourselves in a whole new light. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode79. Click here to listen on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify: Topics Discussed in this Episode: What it means to sync with your cycle and your hormonal rhythms The different phases of your cycle and how to understand them How to sync your nutrition, movement, and exercise with the different phases of your cycle How to sync with the lunar cycle What to pay attention to when you’re tracking your cycle The different dietary and nutritional approaches that will support your hormones and your period How you can have that “talk” with your daughter about sex and getting her period What “simplicity” means and how you can create more simplicity in your life   Key Takeaways: As women, in terms of our cycle, we have four very distinct phases that we are moving through on a week-to-week, month-to-month, and day-to-day basis. Menstruation The follicular phase The ovulatory phase The luteal phase The rhythms of our internal cycle as women predicate a lot of the shifts in how we feel. Tapping into the four phases of the moon is a cool way to learn more about yourself and your body. Most women typically cycle with the new moon, where they get their menstrual cycle during the new moon. During the new moon time, your energy will be lower. It’s typically not the best time to be doing a lot of group-based exercises. The waxing phase of the moon is that period when you’re moving more into your follicular phase. It’s a great time to set new intentions and to honor your desire to move more. The full moon phase is when we tend to feel bolder, more confident, passionate, and excited. This is the time where a lot of women are ovulating and historically, the time when most babies are conceived and born. The waning moon is the longest period in the moon cycle, which is symbolic of the luteal phase. This is when your energy starts to lower down and you start to feel that call to slow things down. One of the biggest lies we’ve been told about our cycles is that it’s going to be the same forever until you no longer have it. If your cycle comes early or it comes really late, you need to reflect on the past months and see how well you’ve been taking care of yourself. Stabilizing your blood sugar is so critical when it comes to your health overall. Regardless of what your goal is, when you’re working with a great holistic practitioner, the top two priorities they’re going to have for you are to make sure your digestion is working really well and that your blood sugar is stable.    Action Steps: Have awareness of your cycle by connecting the differences in how you feel to your hormonal rhythms. Suzanne Gundersen is a Holistic Stress Relief Mentor and Energy Healer.  Over the last 10 years she has helped women all over the world to relieve anxiety, chronic stress and build confidence. Using her own ACE Method along with Energy Tapping (her own style, similar to EFT) she helps women get into alignment with who they truly are and improve their relationships, their mental, emotional and physical health and move through important life transitions with more ease.    Suzanne's unique ACE Method reprograms your stress, revitalizes your energy and reclaims your power, through awareness and clearing of limiting beliefs and programs, building authentic inner connections and boundaries.  Suzanne's own early developmental trauma led her to seek holistic approaches that helped her shed the layers of dysfunction, uncover her value and live with self-honor, compassion and grace.  She dropped hundreds of pounds and anxiety meds and has kept it off for over 10 years.  You’ve got to go in, to get out and you too can transform!  Her Transformation Mentoring and “30 Days to Relieve Anxiety & Quit Overthinking” programs have helped hundreds of women shift to more calm, clarity and choice.  Suzanne takes online private clients from around the world. She also speaks nationally, teaches workshops and hosts monthly women's transformation retreats. In today’s conversation with us, Suzanne explains how the energy meridians in our body get blocked and how to break free from chronic overwhelm and overthinking using the 3 M’s of energy tapping.  She further describes the correlation between our emotions and our body and how to authentically expand into the world with grit and grace. Key Takeaways As women we take so much of life personally because it gives us part of our identity and who we think we are. The 3 M’s of energy tapping are momentum, meaning, and memory. Tapping regulates the momentum of your energy body, helps you detach from the meaning you’ve given something, and breaks your unhealthy memorization patterning and cycles. When did you stop exploring life with curiosity and allowing people to do things for you? There is an emotional component to every physical manifestation that is happening in the body. We are a walking belief system of the emotional habits of the past that are locked into our cellular level of our 3D energetic body. The body always wants to calm down. We are the ones that prevent it. We are biologically designed for human connection. Technology can’t replace that. When we are starting out, learning how to authentically express ourselves can sound like we are throwing up on others because we haven’t yet figured out how to properly self-express. You can’t truly connect with others in a way that’s not grabbing, unless you are connected within. What if you are a soul seeker and you’re with someone who’s not? How do you deal with that? Whether you find yourself in this scenario now or at some point in the future, let’s delve deep and see what this could mean for you in your life. Visit http://thetruthaboutliving.com/podcast/ for complete show notes of every podcast episode Topics Discussed in this Episode: How to deal with being in a relationship with someone who’s at the other end of the spectrum from what you are What happens when you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum in a relationship Tips on how to deal with your own idea of ‘what should be’ The things that shape who we are How not to fall into a state of feeling better than someone else because your path is more worthy Key Takeaways: As you’re with someone over a period of time, there are things about you that change, grow, and evolve, and yet there things about you that stay the same. We always think that we’re going to be the happiest if we are with someone who has the same perspectives that we have, but it doesn’t mean that in order to have maximum harmony in your life that you should really be the same. It’s actually interesting to be with someone who sees things differently. It’s a part of being human to want to be right and to want other people to agree with us. And our need to be understood and our need for agreement can be amplified in a relationship. But the more enlightened we are, the less we need other people’s agreement or validation. We tend to let our ego come into this space that was meant to be pure love and presence and acceptance. And sometimes we use our difference in spirituality as an excuse for unhappiness and as barriers in our relationships. The simple act of noticing when the ego comes in is transformative. When you bring awareness into what you’re actually doing or saying or thinking, you begin to see a shift and find that you have this ability to hit a pause button. You ultimately know what is the best relationship for you. If your relationship is at a point where you feel that there’s just so much misalignment and nothing is in harmony, then you know the choices you have to make around that. But you can’t demand that someone be like you or do the things that you do. To demand what you think is the right way to be and demand that your partner do what you do is really off-track from what it means to honor their holiness, to see them as pure presence and pure love, and to embrace them and accept them for who they are and what they believe in or don’t believe in, in their own path. Action Steps: Look past appearances. Look past arguments. Look past preferences that you don’t agree with. Look past faults and flaws. Look past all of the things that make up our humanness and know that the person you’re in a relationship with is of God. Allow some grace into your relationship and honor their path. Offer presence, love, and non-judgment to your partner, no matter what their belief system is. Allow yourself to see the good that can come from different perspectives. Ask yourself this question: Are you holding your happiness hostage or allowing someone else to hold your happiness hostage because they’re not doing the exact same thing, the exact same time, in the exact same way? Thank you for listening! Quotes: “If we’re talking about true enlightenment here or true awakening, I think we have to let the ego really take a back seat and not allow the ego to intervene in what we think of as pure spiritual pursuits.” “It doesn’t mean that because one person is having a spiritual awakening that instantly everyone should be having the same spiritual experience. There is a grander plan. There is a bird’s-eye view of things that we’re not able to see. We can only see from our own perspective.” Resource Mentioned: Jim Carrey on “Awakening” - YouTube Video A Course in Miracles You’ll See It When You Believe It by Wayne Dyer More from Bridgett Tulloh: Get $50 off the Life Breakthrough Masterclass: http://TheTruthAboutLiving.com/lifebreakthrough Book your Breakthrough Coaching Session at www.TheTruthAboutLiving.com/private-coaching Get the course: The Divine Way of Manifesting - 5 Simple Steps http://the-truth-about-living.teachable.com/p/the-divine-way-to-manifesting/ Watch & Subscribe on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgW0B8eytH3KK7RUi6o-7uA

Josh sat down with seven high school students from Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science in Long Beach, CA. This is the first part of the interview. In this episode we discuss screen time, Instagram vs Snapchat, how students want to be talked with to get them to solve their own problems. Key Takeaways: As kids, if parents tell us one thing we're going to do exactly the opposite If your child doesn't have a lot of self-control you should monitor the amount of time that they spend on their phone Parents set an example for their children When did you get your first phone? [1:07] I got my first phone in second grade. I know that's pretty young but that is because my parents are divorced. I was going from house to house different weekends. I got a flip phone called a Duke that you could flip open. –Megan I got my first phone in sixth grade. It was like a flip phone but it had a touchscreen. –Eric I got my first phone in the summer of seventh grade. I went up to Seattle to see my aunts and then I flew alone on the plane so my mom felt it was necessary for me to have a little phone. I got a flip phone and that connected with me with her. –Nate I got my first phone between 3rd and 4th grade. It was a smartphone. It was because I walked to school. My mom was a "techy" person so she gave me a Galaxy S1. –Brendon I think it was 4th or 5th grade when I got my first cellphone. The reason I got one is I was going between both sides of my family. They wanted to keep in touch and check up on me to make sure I'm alive. –Kiyo I got my first phone in the summer after tenth grade. –Sarah I got my first phone at 7. My parents weren’t together. I used to travel back and forth a lot so they wanted to keep in contact. –Xavier When did you get social media and what app did you use first? [3:14] I got Facebook when I was in fifth grade. It was because I have a divorced family. It was cool to be able to connect with family on both sides. If I went on vacation with one of my families, I could post pictures and connect with them. The important factor was connecting with family that I haven't really talked to in a while. –Megan I got social media around sixth grade because I had a girlfriend at that time. She thought it was necessary. –Eric I got my first Facebook account in sixth grade. My mom wanted to get boosted on Farmville so she got to a much higher level. and I got to play Farmville so that was my first experience with social media. –Nate I think I got social media around fourth grade. It was MySpace. –Xavier I joined SnapChat at 16. –Sarah I got Facebook in third grade. –Kiyo My mom forced me to get a Facebook account because she wanted the family to always be together. –Brendon How do teens use Instagram and Snapchat? Which platform do teens prefer? [6:20] I use Snapchat more. It's hard to draw a comparison between Instagram and SnapChat. For me Instagram is a way to connect with people not necessarily for like my own purpose but to help me get somewhere. I've had this goal since I was a little kid. Instagram gives me a way to talk to people who have achieved that same goal. Instagram is more of a tool to connect me with real people who have done what I want to do whereas Snapchat is a quick conversation with my friends. –Nate I see Instagram as your public profile whereas Snapchat is like the iMessage of social media apps. You can check in on people without talking to them directly. –Brendon Snapchat is more of a personal social media platform. Instagram is for things like live Instagram stories or videos and it's really cool to be able to jump in on that. You can join these live stories now and chat with whoever you want. –Megan I don't spend a lot of time on social media. I spend more time on Instagram but that's because I'm just DMing my friends. It's easier for us that way but I feel that Instagram is more permanent. –Sarah I use Instagram more than Snapchat. I use it to push me further for certain colleges. I want to get into business and I want to go into mechanical engineering. –Kiyo How much screen time is too much? [14:14] As kids, if parents tell us one thing we're going to do exactly the opposite. That's our immediate reaction to almost anything. In my experience, my parents are pretty lenient. They trust me. We have good trust in our relationship. What I've noticed is from kids whose parents are constantly telling them “Hey get off your phone.” “Hey get off your phone or I'm gonna take your phone before you go to bed.” Those kids are on their phone the most because when they are given the opportunity to be on their phone they are like “Alright, I have to savor all of this time. I have to cram it all in.” That's not healthy. I feel more and more we need to remember that the more you say not to be on your phone the more kids are gonna want to be on their phones. This is another thing. Parents, you guys are examples. A lot of times we see parents revert to being on their phones constantly and it's really shaking for us to see them constantly checking their phones in social anxiety evoking situations. For instance I see parents just sitting, waiting in line and they immediately go on their phone to look like they're doing something because everyone else is. I see parents do that a lot. Then they turn around and tell their kids “Hey stop being on your phone. Stop doing this.” It sends the wrong message. I feel a lot of parents don't understand that. It's something important to remember. –Megan I feel like parents should try to limit screen time in the hopes of preventing their children from getting addicted. I'm not saying that all children will get addicted because there are kids who can use their phone without feeling it's necessary all the time. Some kids don't have that self control. If your child doesn't have a lot of self-control you should monitor the amount of time that they're on their phone. If your child has exhibited self-control and seems like they've got a pretty good handle on the situation you can monitor them less. You should still be aware of how much time they spend but you don't need to be breathing over their shoulder. –Sarah It starts with the relationship between the parent and the child. If you're not trusting your child and you've seen that they are trustworthy, they don't make good use of their time then the phone isn't the starter. –Brendon What ideas do you have about self-control? [18:58] One family friend’s daughter was getting addicted to her phone. My mom and I suggested for her to go to her daughter and say, “Alright, hey this is the deal. I think that you're on your phone way too much. First I'm going to let you solve the problem. You figure out how much time you should be on it. You figure out what you're going to do to combat it. Then come to me and tell me how you're gonna deal with it.” Practice that for two or three weeks and then see the results. See what happens. If you're giving your kid trust, they will trust you. –Megan Next Steps for Podcast Listeners: Join Parent University to get videos to watch with your kids so they can better understand WHY they need to be smart online. Guest - Jennifer McClure - Speaker, Executive Coach, President of Unbridled Talent & CEO of DisruptHR How do you innovate in a role that historically has been typecast as transactional?  Jennifer McClure joins us on the podcast this week.  We discuss innovation, building business acumen, how a role in Human Resources relates to sales, and a number of other topics. Jennifer was an amazing guest.  Not only did we discover that both of us are D’s when it comes to our DISC profiles, but we also both have to push out of our comfort zones to be more extroverted in our jobs.  Jennifer talks about setting personal challenges when communicating, including personal gates, such as never being the first person to talk, and not offering a solution until you ask at least one question. Questions addressed What does disruption mean to Jennifer? What are some of the things that are happening in HR when it comes to innovation? How do you distinguish between signal and noise What are some things people should consider when thinking about making a transition (level up, do something different)? What is the secret to being a good coach? What happens if you dismiss HR or others in the hiring process? How can HR (and other) professionals build business acumen? Key Takeaways As an organization or as a leader, if you say you are innovative, but you don't allow people to fail, you are simply fooling yourself. From the receptionist to the switchboard operator, treat people like you would like to be treated - people matter.  Your #1 job when going through the interview process is to be the most likable person they interact with. Engage - it will help you differentiate from others in the process. Look in the mirror - be self-aware; you know what’s in your head, your job is to get information out of the person you are meeting with, then deliver your information in context. The more we look at talent through the same lens that we look at consumer products, the better we will perform.  This will free HR up to work on more strategic things. Think of yourself in the context of a well-rounded business professional.  A business leader with HR expertise. Over the next 2 to 3 years Jennifer expects HR to continue to evolve to a much more strategic function - it’s not just a phrase, people are our most important resources. If you want to build business acumen, start by developing a curiosity about the business.  Start with some foundational questions - i.e. How do we make money? As the year begins to wind down, Alex uses this time to reflect and assess his business. He takes a macro view of his business, and analyzes some of the things that he's happy, and unhappy, about. He also incorporates the help of his team, so that everyone within the company can be a part of setting new goals for the company, and for the new year.   Key Takeaways: As the year begins to wind down, it's very important to assess yourself and your business. A lot of people understand the importance of goal setting, but they just don't do it effectively. You have to carve out time for your goals! Around this time of the year, Alex takes a macro view of his business, and sees what he's happy/unhappy with. If you have a team, get them involved in this goal setting process. Alex discusses some of the strategies he's been using to sell his wholesale deals. Alex's open rates for emails have been between 15-18%. Not bad, but not amazing either. When building a buyer's list, you always want to ask the buyer for their cell phone number. This way you can send them text blasts (with their permission of course). Alex tries to hit people from different directions -- that way they never miss Alex's offers.    Mentioned in This Episode: FlipEmpire.com   Ask Alex A Question: Have a question you want featured on an upcoming Flip Empire Show?
