Shine the Light on Sickle Cell is an annual community awareness campaign to celebrate World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on June 19 as proclaimed by the United Nations in 2008 and to advocate for a universal cure. Shine the Light on Sickle Cell is led by a collaborative of 34 nonprofit, community-based organizations in the Northeast United States whose aim is to increase awareness of Sickle Cell Disease and advocate for treatments and better outcomes for individuals with the disease. Learn more at Shine the Light on Sickle Cell. #shinethelightonsicklecell. To tell us more I speak to Zemoria Brandon - Chair of the Shine the Light on Sickle Cell campaign. https://wepsicklecell.org/sinerge/shine-the-light/ http://www.sicklecelldisorder.com/    The “Right2ReadPhilly” Campaign offers support and resources so busy families can do fun things together that are proven to help kids become strong readers. One is promoting The Freedom Schools Alphabet Song – a phonics base song founded by Black teachers at the Freedom Schools movement of the sixty's Civil Rights era. I speak to Dr. Heseung Song, President and CEO of Mighty Engine, Elaine Wells, Founder, Global Thinking Initiatives. She's also a West Philly Reading Captain and Tiny Trekkers Leader. Also joining us is Sharif El-Mekki, Founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development.  https://www.right2readphilly.org/https://thecenterblacked.org/  I speak to Media activist and PHILLY TRUCE Cofounder Mazzie Casher (aka Grand Agent) about his new single "Can't Say Love Enough" which has  taken the iconic Lift Every Voice and Sing, injected it with the soulful vibes of Philly International session players, and amped it up with beats that slap - hard. Dropping on National Gun Violence Awareness Day (June 7th) to highlight the urgency of the moment, with a  chorus that rivals the legendary "What The World Needs Now", a song that defined the Vietnam Era, "Can't Say Love Enough" is set to be the anthem of 2024. http://soulspazm.ffm.to/cantsayloveenough

What The World Needs Now.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.Today we have a special bonus episode because the boys are back in town. My guest is Steve Schuch joining us from Hancock, New Hampshire. Steve is a former Peace Corps volunteer, Audubon naturalist, award-winning recording artist and author, composer, musician, and the recipient of the Parent’s Choice Gold Award for his CD Trees of Life. You’ve heard his music on NPR and PBS. But mostly I’ve known Steve as my brother-in-law. I’ve invited him here to share with us a most wonderful story about how musing on Martin Luther King, Jr. and America the Beautiful traveled all its musical way to becoming a new America the Dream. What makes this such a neat story? Let’s hear how all this came to be. Welcome to the podcast, Steve!Minutes: 37:010:00 to 2:22 IntroStart From Where You Are.Minute 2:22 to 6:34  Steve as Musician Back Story On your website you have a darling quote by a 3rd grader who wrote: "I really likt your songs and storeys. What do you do for a liveing?" -Barry, 3rd grade. My listeners have heard 2 of your compositions: Mer’s Waltz that underscores my daily 60 Seconds podcast, and Entering Erdenheim which introduces and closes my guest interviews. After listening to your music for a bit what was the NYTimes trying to express about the book,  Symphony of WhalesSymphony of Whales (national award-winning) true story: 3,000 whales  trapped in Straits in Siberia - released by ice breaker playing classical musicAt some point words failThe story is about risking the ship and crew to rescue 3,000 whales (1/10th of the world's population)Music helps us to express what words cannotMassive ice breaker ship cut ice but how to get the whales to move along - to follow this massive ice breaker to open water?Whale songs didn’t work, nor did Russian Rock & Roll, nor folk musicClassical music was enough to get the whales to follow the ship to seaMusic as a universal language - for all kingdomsComplexity of songs in the songbird kingdom that we can’t hear with the naked earHow It All BeganMinute 11:46 to 15:55 From Small Town Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration to Music Mission I understand that you and (your wife, my sister) Marilyn were at a local New Hampshire town gathering in January of 2019 celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday and you had this idea......tell us more about that:As a member of the Event Planning Committee Steve suggested: What if we had an anthem everyone could sing together? What if we could weave together “America the Beautiful” with Dr. King’s dream for all America? What if we were to take opening lines of America the Beautiful, create a chorus, create new verses that reflected Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream and invite everyone to sing?Closing out the New Hampshire town event all the people were singingThe sound that day of children’s voices, together with parents and grandparents, was incredibly uplifting. And so this project was born.Led to quite a project in the Year of COVIDWhat was intriguing about the Martin Luther King , Jr. language?“I Have a Dream!” speech is still relevant, beautiful language, older language, reminiscent of Abraham Lincoln, King JamesThe language is accessibleBeautiful ideals of brotherhood/sisterhood, children growing up together that might not have been possible in 1960sMartin Luther King, Jr. speech is a dream of what America CAN be. America the Beautiful is also a dream; not just what we’ve achieved but the dream of democracy we’re still working onPeople risk their lives to come here, have a better lifeWe’ve not yet achieved all we're capable of yet but our dream is still thereIt was almost a natural to pair MLK's dream with America the BeautifulMinute 15:55 to 19:36  Katherine Lee Bates and America the BeautifulFor those who may not know, 130 years ago Katherine Lee Bates wrote a poem which came to be known as America the Beautiful. Would you tell us more about that and how it came to be our unofficial anthemBates was professor at Wellesley College - one of the first female professors  in the country at a time when such achievement was unusual for a womanTeaching in ColoradoWonderful poetWagon train to top of Pike’s Peak; Bates began jotting lines in her scribbler: called the poem “America”Had no idea what would become of it; as it turned out: good happenstance“Good happenstance happens to those who write frequently than for those who write rarely.”Steve’s hope is to encourage the singing of this song, and others like it, all across this land to unite us.At a time when our country feels increasingly fractured, songs like this can help bring us together. They remind us of all we share in common: the promise of an America that is more than any of us aloneWhat kept you moving forward with this work as it morphed from project to mission?People hearing the early version asked how comes it’s not being sung everywhere?Considered: set up new website with free sheet music? Music videos? More history?Actually, what would make more sense is a series of arrangements for different singing groups: children’s choir, church choir, college choir, country western singerResult: much of the COVID year was spent composing the many arrangements which are free and downloadable on the America the Dream websiteMinute 19:36 to 21:00  America the Dream  - The EvolutionThe evolution of the poem which had been set to music and in time becoming our unofficial national anthem - America the Beautiful  - partnered with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s "I Have a Dream!" speechLet’s hear and talk about some of the arrangements our listener will discover on the America the Dream website: Minute 21:00 to 26:05  America the Dream Arrangement IIITell us about what we just heard and why this is not another rehash America the BeautifulIn this version you are hearing entirely new sections that Steve composed, sung by wonderful women’s voices with piano accompanimentArrangement III is not too difficultThe entire choir could be on melody if desired; or the choice for 2-part harmony if choir wishesThe piano is interesting in that it has an intro “Every mountainside let freedom ring for the hope unseen, the long awaited dream.”  From the outset the song references the dream, hope, aspiration of Martin Luther King, Jr. and probably Katherine Lee BatesThe listener will get a surprise about the melody and take it different placesArrangement III is not complicated but musically satisfyingThe hope is that any choir conductor, and music director could listen to all 6 arrangements on the website and find the version that’s suitable for their group, venue, etc.Another website resource: downloadable MP3 with piano accompaniment if your group doesn’t have a piano for rehearsal or performanceAnother website resource: download rehearsal exampleWebsite designed to be user-friendly for everyoneMinute 26:05 to 28:00  How these voice were brought togetherRemarkable and miraculous project! As project getting underway, creating website, making sheet music available and at a time when COVID prevents the gathering of live choirs.Steve heard a virtual choir music video by Boston Conservatory at Berklee student Shelbie Rassler who was then a senior with some 70 of her student colleagues What the World Needs NowSome 2 million people saw and listened and Steve decided "I need this person!"People want to see faces and hear actual voicesSteve asked Shelbie about working together with some of her peersThey began the work on music videos summer 2020 and finished up fall 2020Everything is available for free on the websiteNOTE: These scores are free for non-commercial use. For public performances the lyrics may be included in printed programs or projected on to screens as long as the credits are included. Please consider sending us a YouTube of your performance to be added to our website. For commercial use contact us for permission and licensing. Minute 28:00 to 37:01   America the Dream Arrangement IVThe reason for 6 different versions is to offer choices: complicated or simple arrangementsWhat’s unusual about Arrangement IV is the level of complexity: the piano part reinforces the melody but almost never plays itWhat makes Arrangement IV gorgeous is the undercurrent - quite unusual and specialListen to the piano hinting of melody, like a river or extra current around the melody but not playing the melodyNot super-difficult but singers would have to be confident of their abilitiesThis brings tears to my eyes! This is a bring it together kind of songWe don’t have many songs that celebrate the hope and promise of our countryFor many years America the Beautiful is unofficial national anthem because the lyrics speak to love of country but not a militaristic oneIt is sung to a melody written in 1882 by Samuel Augustus Ward, a Newark, New Jersey, church organist and choirmasterVery singable! In a time of our awareness to bring country together prompted the writing of lyrics about coming together, to sing togetherThere has been a need for it all alongSteve wrote verses with the idea that people would sing - togetherMinute 35:00 to 39:00       You use the analogy of a baseball game when you were talking about this work. What does that mean for people who haven’t been the website yet? Here we are, at the end of the road but not the journey. He began playing professionally while still in high school. Later at Oberlin College he continued studying both music and biology. There he started listening to different kinds of music beyond just classical, picked up his first used $25 guitar, and began writing his first songs. After college Steve spent two and a half years as a Peace Corps volunteer, planting trees with farmers in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. There he listened to the different melodies and rhythms and began writing more of his own music. Many evenings, a guitar would be passed around a room full of people. By lantern light, young and old alike shared music and stories over cups of ginger root tea and home grown coffee.Since returning to the United States in 1984, Steve and his music have embraced both the classical and folk realms. Haunting violin and whale calls... music and tales of Ireland... a pizzicato interpretation of a Picasso painting... these are just part of Steve's wide-ranging repertoire. Many of his pieces have been featured on National Public Radio and PBS.For four years Steve taught a graduate course on integrating music and storytelling into classroom curriculum. Song Title: He's Got the Whole World in His HandsSong by: Mahalia JacksonPodcast Vocals: Gail NoblesKeyboard: Gail NoblesInfo: WikipediaHello! I'm Gail Nobles and today's topic is Mahalia Jackson on The Gospel Greats. A show about great gospel singers. Did you know Mahalia Jackson once appeared on Sesame Street? It was 1969 when she sung the gospel "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands". (singing) ......... Mahalia would sing something like that, and she would never sing a song the same way all the time. Mrs. Jackson was a great gospel singer, and I was surprised to find out that she had appeared on Sesame Street.Mahalia would refuse to sing any but religious songs or indeed to sing at all in surroundings that she considered inappropriate. But she sang on the radio and on television. With her mainstream success, Jackson was criticized by some gospel purists she complained about her hand-clapping and foot-stomping and about her bringing "Jazz into the church". She had many notable accomplishments during this period, including her performance of many songs in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, singing "Trouble of the World" in 1959's Imitation of Life, and recording with Percy Faith. At the March on Washington in 1963, Jackson sang in front of 250,000 people "How I Got Over" and "I Been Buked and I Been Scorned". Martin Luther king Jr. made his I Have a Dream speech there. She also sang "Take My Hand Precious Lord" at his funeral after he was assassinated in 1968. Mahalia made many performances and recorded about 30 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen "gold" - million sellers. Jackson's last album was What The World Needs Now (1969). The next year, in 1970, she and Louis Armstrong performed "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" together. She ended her career in 1971 with a concert in Germany and the she returned to the U.S., she made ne of her final television appearances on The Flip Wilson Show. There is a quote left from Mahalia Jackson. She said, "I sing God's music because it makes me feel free. It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues." When I hear Mahalia Jackson sing, I'm reminded to remember this song ......

With this episode, we wrap up the first series of Faith Made Welcome, a progressive podcast on faith brought to you by Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. If you’ve been listening since Episode 1, you know that throughout the month of August we recorded podcasts offering an opportunity for folks in our faith community to further discuss topics from a special sermon series at our church. That series, titled “What The World Needs Now,” invited guest activist preachers to give us their take on this theme. Today’s episode, which you can watch on our YouTube Channel, features Nichola Torbett, who argues that what the world needs now is a longing for life or, as she puts it, using the German word sehnsucht, or deep wistful longing.  In this episode of the podcast, pastors Robin and Marty Anderson are joined by both members of the This Most Unbelievable Life duo: Faith Made Welcome regular, Cheri Spiegel, and Faith Made Welcome’s sound engineer, Paul Fitzgerald. In this episode we take a look at what it looks like to truly long for life. We consider how abundant life and the longing of our hearts is necessarily tied to community, and we explore ways that the American Dream, American exceptionalism, and other transactional systems might keep us from living life fully alive. About Nichola TorbettNichola Torbett describes herself as a spiritual seeker, recovering addict, gospel preacher, podcaster, writer, resistance fomenter, dog-walker, nonviolent direct action trainer and abolitionist. She co-founded the Seminary on the Streets, a training academy for love warriors and Second Acts, a liturgical direct action affinity group. She is the co-editor of Respiscence: A Lenten Devotional for Dismantling White Supremacy, and she contributes to The Word in Resistance, a podcast from SURJ-Faith.  About Our Guest, Paul FitzgeraldDr. Paul Fitzgerald is a professor of Biology at Northern Virginia Community College, and is a 20+ year student, and teacher, of mindfulness and Vipassana meditation. A mid-westerner at heart and a dedicated spiritual seeker for life, he is a co-founder, along with Dr. Cheri Spiegel, of This Most Unbelievable Life, and a co-host of the associated podcast, This Most Unbelievable Podcast. This important film looks at the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in our country.Grey’s Anatomy:  We reference this show as an example about how a certain kind of contract (the prenup) can play out. If you’re worried about a spoiler, the episode in question is like four years old, catch up!Malcolm Guite: We mention Guite’s concept of Covenanted Discomfort from the Work of the People video by the same name.Lisa Sharon Harper and Jen Hatmaker:  We indirectly reference their Facebook Live conversation about  “White Women’s Toxic Tears” Father Richard Rohr: We reference one of his posts on the Center for Action and Contemplation website, called “Jesus’ Social Program.” About This PodcastThis podcast was envisioned as means to foster spiritual growth and conversations about faith, both within and beyond the faith community at Commonwealth Baptist Church. The Church at CW

This Sunday we will be starting our new series, Fruit That Remains. The first message will be dealing with love. When I was growing up, there was a song titled, "What The World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love". In my experience, I have seen that love can produce broken hearts and goose bumps, loss of appetite and starry eyes. It's inspired some to die and others to kill. Love may make the world go round, but it certainly causes a lot of confusion in the process! This Sunday we will look at what the Bible says about this powerful subject called LOVE.

Never before have Santana and The Isley Brothers, two accomplished musical legends in their own right, collaborated together in the studio until now.  Power of Peace celebrates the musical unity between Carlos Santana, Ron Isley and Ernie Isley. The album also marks a familial gathering as they are joined by their wives - Cindy Blackman Santana, Kandy Johnson Isley (Ron's wife) and Tracy Isley (Ernie's wife) singing background vocals with Cindy on drums.  Host Robin Milling spoke with Carlos and Cindy about their musical and romantic union which Carlos describes as spiritual. He added, "We are bananas for each other both on and off the stage." Their connection is palpable having been married almost seven years. Cindy also talks about contributing the song I Remember which came at a time in her life before Carlos so the song resonates a new meaning. Also joining Robin are Ron and Ernie Isley who discuss their brotherhood with Jimi Hendrix - whose spirit still looms throughout their lives. Ron who lends his soulful lead vocals to such songs as God Bless The Child, What The World Needs Now, and Mercy, Mercy Me discusses the kindred connection to Carlos Santana and how their legacy has been shaped as a result.

Reflections & Celebrations

Even the Bible definition of love is more about what love isn't than what love is.   As a person who marries people, I say that definition of love almost every week during my wedding ceremony for my couples.    And of course there is that famous song, "What The World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love."    Sweet Love.   Doesn't that sound wonderful?    So on today's show, I am going to look at some ideas about love from my perspective of heavenly love.

Jonathan Daily is one of those savvy, self-taught musicians who learned guitar, drums, and some basic recording techniques early on. And he's got a more than decade-long catalogue of original material to show for it. Jonathan plays guitar and sings in the dancey post-punk outfit The Black Black. They've got a new full-length album coming out next month on Brooklyn's Money Fire Records, and they've got a slew of local shows lined up. In the premiere episode of Season 3, Jonathan shares a few of his earliest and most primitive experiments in punk songwriting. We also bookend the episode with "What The World Needs Now" and "Until Death Do Us Party," two unreleased tracks from The Black Black's forthcoming record.
