Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast! We are back with Part 2 of our panel conversation on the state of the feminism movement. Make sure to listen to Part 1 first if you missed it! We've gathered an exceptional panel of guests to join Craig in discussing this topic. Daelen Lowry makes her highly anticipated return to the show, joined by Janelle King, host of The Janelle King Show and a member of the state election board; Dominique Deming, a soon-to-be-ordained Episcopal priest; and Dr. Kathryn Turman, currently a teacher at the Atlanta International School. Feminism is a movement advocating for gender equality. It continues to evolve, reflecting diverse global challenges. In recent years, intersectional feminism has gained prominence, addressing the interconnectedness of gender with race, class, and sexuality. While significant strides have been made, such as improved access to education and workplace equity, systemic issues persist, including gender-based violence and wage gaps. Social media has amplified feminist voices, fostering activism and awareness, yet it also exposes backlash and polarization. Emerging feminist discourses emphasize inclusivity and challenge traditional norms, striving for a world where equality transcends boundaries and every individual can thrive without gender-based constraints. The Georgia Supreme Court has blocked the state's Republican-led election board from enforcing new election rules introduced just weeks before Election Day. We speak to Republican Janelle King, a board member who pushed for the rule changes.
A judge's ruling has nullified seven last-minute rule changes by Georgia's State Election Board, intensifying debate over election oversight. On today's episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Politically Georgia podcast, we hear from Republican board member Janelle King about the impact of the decision. Former State Rep. Scot Turner joins the podcast to explain his legal fight against the board—and why he's challenging members of his own party. Plus, Democratic State Rep. Saira Draper offers her perspective on the controversy and what it means for Georgia's election process going forward. The now two-day Georgia Elections Board September hearing - stretching from Friday to today - has been a drama-filled doozie - and I've plenty of audio to share with you, so get your popcorn and settle in for a wild ride. Remember when this board as a boring, "mostly-ministerial acts" sort of body? Ahh, good times. Instead, now, our state's board wants to further gum up Election Day/night certification by having humans hand-count paper ballots - by the thousands and reams of pages of paper. That the governor, Secretary of State and attorney general of the state - all Republicans themselves - pan this and other 11th-hour rules changes the board has enacted - means nothing to these MAGA pies. You simply hav to listen as Dr. Janice Johnston and Janelle King - two of the "MAGA three" on the board - howl with righteous indignation at being called out for being and doing precisely what they are and have done, though. They 'doth protest too much, methinks. OH, and bless Sarah G. Tindall - the lone Democrat on the board - for appearing to be the lone member of the board aware of what it is and isn't capable of doing within the restraints of state law.
Gene Hamilton is the Executive Director and General Counsel at America First Legal. Janelle King is a member of the Georgia State Election Board. Gene Hamilton is exposing a major flaw in our national voting system. The federal voter registration form comes in 21 different languages and has no system of verification. All you have to do is sign that you are a citizen of the United States. America First Legal is suing all 15 counties in Arizona to ensure that proper verification is completed after an individual claims to be a U.S. citizen on the federal form. As of now, Arizona is refusing to remove illegals from voter rolls and have 42,000 voters on federal voter rolls who would not or could not present proof of citizenship. Gene breaks down all the efforts America First Legal is taking to keep our elections secure. Janelle King gives us an update on Georgia and what to expect for the 2024 presidential election. After legislation SB 189 and SB 202, the Secretary of State has been removed from the Election Board. As they navigate this separation, Janelle gives us the full rundown on how Georgia is preparing for an accurate, free and fair election. Immigration, border security, gun safety, crime, reproductive rights, jobs, and the Israeli-Hamas War were among the top issues addressed during the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Alan Abramowitz, a professor emeritus of political science at Emory University, returns to “Closer Look” for a recap of the convention. Plus, the Georgia State Election Board is facing criticism along with calls for some board members to be removed for changing rules, specifically one rule that involves the certification of election results. This all comes just months ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Janelle King, a member of the Georgia State Election Board, responds to the criticism.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Janelle King, one of the maligned and newly-seated "MAGA 3" Georgia Elections Board members, panned the idea of insisting Georgia revert to using hand-marked paper ballots, saying "we are altering how the election is being conducted" - as if it say ditching Dominion machines is an unnecessary last-minute alteration Who says irony isn't dead? Despite concerns from the left and right about the potential for hacks, notably after the Coffee County breach perpetrated by MAGA operatives, King and the rest of the board unanimously voted to stick with Dominion's touchscreens and QR codes unreadable by the human eye. Instead, they continued to add layers of local gear-grinding in the certification process, against the urging of even Republicans. They also got stiff-armed by state attorney general Chris Carr, who gave a long-winded "no " to their insistence his office (again) review Fulton County's 2020 results. Night one of DNC 2024 was electric - from Hillary Clinton basking in a "lock him up" crowd-glow to Georgia's Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock continuing to be effective displaying the Democratic Party's moral compass in stark contrast to Donald Trump and MAGA extremism. Oh, and those three women (and a husband) stepping forward to share their reproductive horror stories. Memorable stuff.

President Joe Biden chose to make a weekend of it in the ATL - extending his visit by swooping in a day earlier (with that artery-clogging motorcade, no less) to hobnob with voters at a handful of Saturday events before his Morehouse commencement speech. Before giving you that audio, I also want to share the quips of local conservative pundit Janelle King - a black conservative with her own podcast who appears frequently on a FOX 5/WAGA-TV's "The Georgia Gang." Why? Because I'll never not enjoy pointing out when a conservative pundit lies or lies by ommission. In this case, she tries to elicit dismissiveness when the President (rightly) points out biases & impediments that still exist. She also tried to give former President Donald Trump credit for a boost in HBCU funding, but in fact, he (four times!!!) sought to cut HBCU funding, but Congress sent him bills with funding bososts instead. We've covered this before, here, and again cite Walter Kimbrough's excellent reporting on that. Oh, also there was the President's address at Morehouse College's 2024 commencement.

Across America, 68 percent of incarcerated people with a medical condition go without care in local jails. Put simply, incarcerated people are often denied life sustaining and life-saving health care treatment. To make matters worse, carceral facilities are increasingly used as a response to “treat” those with mental and physical illnesses. But, in reality, they are doing the opposite. After an arrest, those who can't immediately post bail can spend days on end without medical services. Until they can gather enough money to buy freedom, incarcerated people can suffer from poor health care with dire consequences, including in some cases death. Nothing reveals this experience more than the story of 54-year-old Dexter Barry. Last year, in November of 2022 Dexter was experiencing a renewed sense of health and stability in his life. This was all thanks to a heart transplant that he received after waiting for an organ for 12 years while battling ongoing heart complications. That month, Barry got into a verbal dispute with his neighbor in Jacksonville, Florida. The incident resulted in a misdemeanor arrest that kept him in jail for two days without anti-rejection medication for his transplant, despite several pleas for it. Three days after he was released from jail, he died from cardiac arrest that was caused by an acute rejection of his heart. Dexter's story is reflective of sweeping failures in the carceral system. Unfortunately, his story is one of many. We're joined by his children Janelle King and Dexter Barry Jr., who are amplifying their dad's story to get justice and prevent what happened to him from happening to anyone else.

In Georgia, Democrat Raphael Warnock held on to his U.S. Senate seat, defeating Republican candidate Herschel Walker in a special runoff vote. Warnock's reelection is a big win for Democrats, as it gives them a slightly expanded majority in the Senate. It also further supports the idea that Georgia, a historically red state that Democrats managed to flip in 2020, really is becoming more purple. We speak with Republican strategist Janelle King, and Democratic strategist Fred Hicks about the lessons both parties can learn from the results of this contest, as they look ahead to 2024.In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.

Spirituality and work are often two terms that mix as well as water and vinegar, but if workers put so much stock into their careers, it's almost impossible not to consider their spiritual wellbeing also. According to my guest, Janelle King, the two are practically inseparable. In this episode we dig into the importance of understanding the intersection of individual spirituality, finding organizational meaning and purpose, and the difference between having a purpose and a “calling” Janelle King is a fellow Industrial/Organizational consultant and the Founder of Excel Leadership. Janelle works with organizations to build purpose driven cultures and with individuals to build purpose driven lives that connect to life and work. Experience design doesn't have to be void of the spiritual. As progressive leaders seek to make workplaces more human I would expect to see more bridging of organizational purpose to meet the spiritual needs of employees. Special guests, THE GEORGIA GANG's own JANELLE KING and diversity consultant, LATRICE ROSS, debate whether ABORTION RIGHTS are being stripped from women and the role BLACK MEN should play in this debate. Are men attempting to police women's bodies by BANNING ABORTIONS? If ABORTION is about WOMEN'S RIGHT'S, why do so many women disagree? Welcome to the Women with Rose Reid. We continue with our blitz mini-season profiling the amazing women on the ground in Georgia whose work will determine the upcoming election for two Senate seats, and party control. We are just days away from the election on January 5th, and more than 2.5 Million votes have been cast - breaking state records for voter turnout in a runoff election. In this episode: environmentalist, transit activist, and former Atlanta City Council President - Cathy Woolard. Cathy was the first woman to be President of the Atlanta City Council, (and the first openly gay elected official in Georgia) and during her tenure, she championed the Atlanta Beltline, a rails to trails program, which has since garnered over $1 Billion in private development for the surrounding area. She also created Atlanta's first-ever energy policy and passed a local ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual-orientation, the first of its kind in Georgia. Cathy is also a regular on the weekly bipartisan conversations on FOX 5, The Georgia Gang hosted by Lori Geary, alongside Janelle King, who was previously on the show. We get Cathy's perspective on how this election can impact infrastructure and LGBTQ+ rights in Georgia. And Cathy gives some advice - on those pursuing social justice, and coming out.
