How to craft communication that your audience will remember. Why do some messages stick, while others go in one ear and out the other? When it comes to crafting memorable communication, Ada Aka says not all verbiage is created equal. “Certain words are intrinsically more memorable than others,” says Aka, an assistant professor of marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business. In her research of consumer behavior and decision-making, she's uncovered how language shapes not just our perception of the world, “but how the world stays with us over time." From concrete terms to emotionally charged ones, certain words have more staying power than others, and to communicators who want to capture audiences (and keep them), she says, “Carefully chosen words, they're going to be taking the attention.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Aka joins Matt Abrahams to explore the science of memorable communication. From creating brand slogans that stick to choosing words that align with your message, she reveals how to create communication that won't be forgotten.Episode Reference Links:Ada AkaEp.80 Magic Words: Change What You Say to Inspire and Influence Others Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:05) - The Power of Words in Memory (03:45) - What Makes Words Memorable? Welcome to the DMF. Where I try to find out what motivates people behind the scenes in the world of acting and entertainment. Today on the podcast I am talking to filmmaker and comedian: Meagan X Johnson. We talk about directing actors. As always you can reach me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with my name Justin Younts. Thank you for listening and sit back and enjoy. Welcome to the DMF. I'm Justin Younts. In this video, I share my insights on directing and how it can significantly impact an actor's performance. As someone who has spent years in improv and live theater, I have a deep respect for actors and understand the nuances that can make or break a performance. I believe that the key to successful directing lies in preparation and communication. When I direct, I strive to create an environment where actors feel relaxed and inspired. This is crucial because the energy on set can influence the performances. I emphasize the importance of giving actors context about the shooting plan and camera angles beforehand, as this allows them to prepare more effectively. I also discuss my experiences working with both trained actors and improv comedians, highlighting the unique strengths each brings to the table. My approach to directing is all about experimentation and learning from each production. I constantly ask myself what I can do differently to enhance the actors' performances. I also stress the importance of using precise language when giving notes to actors, as the specific words I choose can drastically change the meaning of a scene. Ultimately, my goal is to foster a collaborative atmosphere where actors feel empowered to make choices that resonate with their characters. I believe that the best performances come from actors who are relaxed and in tune with their emotions. Join me as I delve into the art of directing and share tips that can help you unlock your full potential as an actor. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out, there's always something new to learn about the craft of acting and directing. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:05 - Directing and Working with Actors 00:01:23 - Experimenting with Different Approaches 00:02:59 - Working with Trained Actors vs. Improv Comedians 00:04:07 - The Importance of Word Choice in Directing 00:07:18 - The Actor's Perspective 00:07:52 - The Art of Learning Lines 00:10:33 - The Importance of a Relaxed Set 00:11:45 - Creating the Circumstances for Natural Performances 00:12:40 - Different Directorial Styles 00:14:08 - Conclusion
We've all done it: something makes us mad and we start punching others with our words. Let's learn to use our words according to God's design. In this message, Pastor Jamie shares how we can overcome angry words.Angry words are the idle words and the ugly words we say when we get mad. Being angry is not a sin.Jesus got angry.Mark 3:5 ESV The goal for a Christian isn't to never get angry; the goal is never let anger cause you to sin.Ephesians 4:26-27 (Psalm 4:4)ESV Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.Live WITH your anger but don't live BY your anger. How do we stop angry words?1. Ask God to be your editor, not your janitor. In our anger we often say whatever comes to mind and we make a mess. But God doesn't just want to be your janitor and clean up your mess; He wants to be your editor and clean up your mouth.Prov 17:27-28 NLT We've got to stop giving ourselves permission to say everything we think. 2. Learn to intentionally respond, not instinctively react. An intentional response is measured, thoughtful, and deliberate. An instinctive reaction is unrestrained, emotional, and immediate. Proverbs 12:16 NIV Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult. 3. Remove "fighting words" from your vocabulary.Fighting words are words to that cause people to fight about things instead of fix things.Prov 12:18 NIV The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.Examples of fighting words:Always/neverName calling/insultsBringing up the pastTone 4. Adopt God's perspective on people.Don't treat people based on who you think they are, treat them based on who God says they are. 2 Corinthians 5:15-16 NLT "Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength." - Eric HofferChristians are the dwelling place of God. When you speak angry words at Christians, you are trashing God's house. If you're not kind to others, God may have to get on their side to defend them against you! Ever heard someone called a "loose cannon?"That phrase came from the fact that cannons on ships had wheels for when it recoiled when being shot. A loose cannon was one that wasn't properly secured and it would kick back, roll everywhere and endanger the crew on the ship. Without restraints, a loose cannon can potentially not just destroy enemy ships, but destroy the ship its on. We are loose cannons when we declare war with our words when there is no war. We're a loose cannon when we don't restrain our words and hurt our friends and family with "friendly fire." Don't be a loose cannon and destroy your own ship. Are you speaking angry words?

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITCould a politically-charged rumor shake the foundations of an election, or is it merely today's headline fodder? Join me on a journey through political intrigue and media spectacle as we dissect an "October surprise" that targets Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, with stories spun around a supposed past romance with high-stakes international implications. Is there any merit to the New York Post's account, or is it a clever ruse with little effect on the voter psyche? Let's navigate this tangled web and question the role such sensationalism plays in the political narrative.Switching from politics to the world of sports, I tackle the backlash Tom Brady faced after his seemingly offhand comment during a Fox Sports broadcast. The term "spaz" erupted into a broader conversation on language sensitivity and the responsibilities of public figures. As a counterbalance to these weighty topics, I share a light-hearted exploration of my childhood attempts to conjure an imaginary friend. Guided by media and societal cues, I ventured to create a companion from the ether, only to find imagination's boundaries more rigid than expected. Reflect on your own childhood fantasies as we ponder the societal scripts that shape our creative endeavors. Have you ever felt held back by a nagging sense of fear or unworthiness? In the vast landscape of the human mind, words form the terrain where battles are won or lost; they shape our experiences and define our reality. But what if the challenging paths of trauma and doubt could be navigated with a different set of linguistic tools? In this episode of the "Int-HER-rupt Podcast," host Linda Yates and guest Amber Ontiveros explore the intricate relationship between linguistics and neuroscience to offer a strategic roadmap for personal and professional transformation. Amber will guide you in reshaping your internal dialogue and embracing a growth mindset that turns obstacles into stepping stones. Tune in and unleash the leader within — because how you speak to yourself matters, and it's time your words reflect your true potential! A Journey Through Words and Beliefs Amber shares her gripping story of a near-death experience that revolutionized her understanding of internal narratives and biases. As an expert in discrimination with roots in traumatic personal experiences, Amber discusses how these form the basis of negative belief systems anchored in feelings of unworthiness and fear. She emphasizes breaking these cycles through self-work and developing empowering self-talk. The Neuroscience of Bias and Empowerment With her coalition-building and policy development expertise, Amber sheds light on the neuroscience behind the reticular activation system and self-serving bias. She advocates for a growth mindset, suggesting that individuals reframe their perspective on mistakes as opportunities for learning and transcendence. Healing from the Inside Out Amber's approach to healing personal wounds involves mindfulness, breathwork, and self-compassion. She suggests practices like visualization techniques and journaling to rewrite the negative scripts that play in our minds, transforming our life experiences. Shifting Towards Positive Self-Perception Uplifting phrases, Amber asserts, can alter one's self-perception. Suggesting empowering words like “I am worthy” and “I am enough,” she highlights the importance of positive affirmations in one's journey toward healing and growth. Addressing Negative Emotions and Fears In tackling non-empowering words and fears, Amber advises confronting these negative emotions by focusing on the physical sensations they evoke rather than the thoughts themselves. Doing so enables individuals to process and release emotional burdens. Leadership, Bias, and Decision-Making Amber shares her perspective on how leaders can combat biases by incorporating mindfulness and meditation into their practices, allowing for better self-regulation and improved decision-making. She stresses the necessity of compassion, non-judgment, and lovingkindness to nurture positivity within teams. Amber's story of resilience and her commitment to a growth mindset will guide you to a place of healing and strength. Equip yourself with the knowledge and techniques to foster a healthier mind and an enriched, purposeful life. "Words create your experience in your life. And so the way it works is there's this part of your brain. It's in the back of your brain. It's called the reticular activation system. So, if you believe in your mind that you are not worthy, the reticular activation system is literally like a filter." - Amber Ontiveros. WORD CHOICE IN STORIES REVEAL YOUR ATTITUDE AND WORLDVIEW LIKE IT OR NOT “You might have noticed the moment in a conversation which a the other person chose to use a word or phrase you were not familiar with. Perhaps you asked them to back up and explain or define the word, perhaps you ignored the word while trying to place it through remaining context, perhaps you simply pretended to know the meaning of the word. Often people will hear a word and immediately play a subconscious game of word association while trying to determine how they should feel about the word you just used. This subconscious chatter can be the undoing of the communicator if they are not intentional about their word choice.” Watch the video 2-13-24: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/j-loren-norris/episodes/WORD-CHOICE-IN-STORIES-REVEAL-YOUR-ATTITUDE-AND-WORLDVIEW-LIKE-IT-OR-NOT-e2fnr9i Follow on Spotify - https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/j-loren-norris Book A Call with Loren: https://www.jotform.com/form/230026062279046 ______________________________ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/j-loren-norris/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/j-loren-norris/support
Your word choice matters. There's an inherent energy, magic, if you will in your word choice. It's not a coincidence that the construction of words is referred to as “spell-ing.” They literally have the power and potential to cast a spell on your energy, actions, results, identity, and reality! If you continue to underestimate the power of word choice on your mood, energy, well-being, and what you attract in life, you'll continue to fall victim to poor word choices that reinforce what it is you are speaking into existence. In today's episode of the Unstuck Yourself Podcast, I'll reveal the depth and power of words. I'll then share several common word choice missteps you're likely making and help you bring awareness and an action plan to begin using the power of words for you, rather than against you. The Cru discuss the finer points of word choice, as well as our process of refining prose when working through the editing process. Stories this week feature a camp waiting for war; a southern car salesman; an exploration of the sort of words a weasel might say, if he could find his voice; and words spoken in a relationship. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Weasel words. Words of convenient ambiguity, or a statement from which the original meaning has been sucked or retracted. Theodore Roosevelt popularized the 30 term by using it in a speech in 1916 when criticizing he President Wilson. A quotation from the speech provides a good example: 'You can have universal training, or you can have voluntary training, but when you use the word air voluntary to qualify the word universal, you are using a que weasel word; it has sucked all the meaning out of universal. The two words flatly contradict one another.' AusRoosevelt was indebted to a story by Stewart Chaplin, 'Stained-glass Political Platform', which appeared in the Century Magazine in June 1900, and in which occurs the sentence: 'Why, weasel words are words that suck the life out of the words next to them, just as a weasel sucks the egg and leaves the shell.' After serving 20 years in the military, he left his career, went through a divorce, and reinvented himself through self-exploration. In our conversation we thoroughly discuss mental health, depression, and some of the pitfalls of poor therapeutic practices. We examined masculinity in modern culture as well as how we define it. Thanks to a brilliant TED talk by Baratunde Thurston, I'm thinking about how people tell the story of what's happened. I also reached out to my neuroscientist friend Lisa Feldman Barrett to ask her about how the brain processes language. It all sounds very heady and it is, a little, but it's also something worth thinking about since we live in language. (Replay of Ep 52 which originally aired on July 15, 2022)

Today I am sharing a remarkable story from the book Remember the Ice and other Paradigm Shifts by Bob Nicoll. It will open your eyes to the importance of using words well. Understanding truth changes lives and Bob understood words. Hearing his story and reading his book will change your life too.
There are words that we use so often that we rarely stop to consider the impact that they can have. The word but is often used when we discuss things like Black History Month. “It's important but, it's the shortest month of the year…” The word but negates what comes before it. When you use the word but you may be negating the lived experiences and realities of others without even realizing it. For the final episode of Black History Month, Erica discusses why we need to be more conscious of when we use but. In this discussion: How the word but negates experiences and realities A case for keeping history, heritage, and cultural months on the calendar Why using the word but doesn't soften the impact of your words How to use language as a clue to how you're processing Resources: Learn more about land acknowledgments at native-land.ca Listen to Erica and E.K. This week, AJ and Brandon talk about the importance of word choice and what gets lost when we accept some of the modern "synonyms."
Do you have students who are constantly using bland and boring words in their writing? I know I sure do! I'm continuing our series on descriptive writing, but if you haven't listened to the first two episodes in the series, Episode 94 and Episode 95, be sure to do that now. In today's episode, I'm focusing on providing excellent word choice strategies to use with your students. When I noticed my students not being descriptive with their writing, I realized the words they were using were in their comfort zone. However, as I started implementing ways to get them out of their comfort zone, to think more creatively about the words they were choosing and using, their language became more colorful and descriptive. I came up with 7 word choice strategies to use with my students, which you can start using immediately in your classroom! As always, make sure you model and practice each strategy with your students so they know what's expected of them and how to use each strategy properly. To change anything at scale, you need to collect data. You need to know the depth of an issue or trend to efficiently and effectively respond to it. When those issues and trends pertain to the people at your workplace, data can't just be numbers. Qualitative data, their stories, the words they say, need as many slides in the deck. How you tell a story matters. The way you talk about why you lost your job can cost you a potential one. The way you explain the reason for layoffs can cause panic among employees and stakeholders. And the way journalists report the news can incite violence.Framing, including word choice, is one of the most important areas peace journalists discuss and develop. To find out what business professionals could learn from peace journalists about storytelling, I invited Steven Youngblood, Director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at Park University, for a conversation on The Express to Impress Podcast. Here are some excerpts from our conversation;“The question should never be, do we withhold the information? The question should be, how do we convey the information?”“If you want to be an informed person in 2022, it is going to take an effort. So the first thing I tell my students is not to depend on social media for their news. This, despite the fact that study data shows that's exactly where they get their news from.”Tune in to get more valuable insights from Steven, so you're well prepared to tell stories about challenging events.—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Original theme music by Lucas Knutter Read the transcript here. In this episode, we focus on word choice and how word choice can set tone. We discuss multiple instances in the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard defamation trial where word choice and definition is contested and why it matters. Following that, how we can apply this in our own writing to set tone, drive narratives, and create conflict on the page. Let us know what you think by commenting on our discord or twitter!
Last night, I was having a conversation with a new potential student, trying to figure if we would be a great fit to work with one another. We had spoken briefly a few times before, and I knew he listens to this podcast (you know who you are). By the end of the conversation, we had our first session scheduled and paid. He thanked me and said he looked forward to learning and hearing my thoughts on some music she was going to be sending me after our chat. Instinctively, I started to type a response, saying something like “looking forward to working with you!”But I stopped myself before hitting send. Something didn't feel right. I don't mean something didn't feel right about the student, or about the scheduled session… something didn't feel right about saying “looking forward to working with you.”***Join the Thanks For Thinking Podcast Community on DiscordIntro music: “Gingerly” (instrumental) by Surname.
