Shot while the first series of the Batman TV show was still playing, it was written in two weeks, filmed in a month, and premiering in Texas as a result of some help with a boat... Our latest guest on Soundtracking is Jason Reitman, director and co-writer of Saturday Night. The story follows producer Lorne Michaels and a team of writers, comedians and crew as they prepare for the 1975 premier of Saturday Night, which of course became Saturday Night Live. Remarkably, and in keeping with the spirit of the show, composer Jon Batiste wrote much of the score live at the end of shooting each day.

Saturday Night Live (originally called "Saturday Night," due to American Sportscaster Howard Cosell having a show on CBS called Saturday Night Live.) premiered less than a month and a half after Jim was born. By the time it hit it's real stride in the mid 80's, it had become an institution, and Jim's sports team. Like a sports team, SNL has good and bad seasons. It has super stars and draft busts. It has great seasons with bad episodes, bad seasons with good episodes, bad episodes with good sketches, good episodes with bad sketches....  For this show we went to an actual real life movie theater and watched "Saturday Night," a fictionalization of the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of Saturday Night Live, directed by Jason Reitman (son of comedy LEGEND Ivan). How well does the movie pull it off? Do they get the characters right? What about Gilda? You're just gonna have to listen to find out.

Welcome to the first episode of our summer series of chats where Andrew catches up with filmmakers and creatives who are behind some of the years best films. From Saturday Night, to Lee, to We Live in Time, and Australia's own Memoir of a Snail, we've got some great film discussions to keep you going over this festive break.First off the rank is a chat with two of the creatives behind Saturday Night, the comedy retelling of the first night of Saturday Night Live. In 2021 Jason Reitman heled a sequel to his dad's two entries from the 80s, ignoring the existence of the 2016 movie altogether. The result is a good looking, well acted, well directed, two hour slog of a film filled with Easter Eggs and nostalgia bait meant to pull at the heart strings of every guy that said the previous film "killed their childhood."
