Today, we sit down with Will Layton to learn how a topic like “entity resolution” can improve federal cybersecurity. During the interview, he gives an overview of how federal systems have evolved over the years and the need to understand the implications of automation. We know federal systems are, in general, moving to the cloud. This may be a private cloud, a public cloud, or even a hybrid cloud. Second, data ingestion has overwhelmed most agencies.  As a result, many large-scale organizations are implementing automated tools, some call “agents” to become more efficient. Will Layton describes how humans need to be identified an automated tool, or entities, need to establish credentials as well. When a malicious actor tries to present like an entity in a complex automated system, Senzing can identify it and save federal leaders from unwanted actio

The AI heard 'round the world has put the machine intelligence sector back in the spotlight. But when you squint beyond the press hype, the data shows that artificial intelligence is now the number one sector in terms of relative spending velocity in the ETR taxonomy. Normally market hype leads deployments, but the data suggests that spending activity and market penetration for AI are coinciding with the hype. While hyperscale cloud players are reaping the rewards, we think this is a rising tide that's going to lift all AI ships, those both plainly in sight and others that may not be so visible. In this Breaking Analysis we dig deeper into the AI space with spending data from ETR and one of the best minds in tech generally, and AI specifically, Jeff Jonas, CEO, founder, and chief scientist at Senzing.

The truth isn't always black and white. Sometimes, it requires more context and background when attributed to different scenarios and situations. The same can be said about your data and whether a “single version of the truth” can be properly applied to multiple use cases for your business. In this episode, Malcolm interviews Jeff Jonas, the Founder, and CEO of Senzing — a software company on the leading edge of developing “entity resolution” solutions — which solve the growing challenge of uniquely identifying people or objects across multiple systems of duplicate, low-quality data. Malcolm and Jeff discuss how advances in technology are fueling more modern forms of entity resolution, where companies are now able to implement more context-centric approaches to complex matching, particularly within their master data management (MDM) programs. As technical as “entity resolution” may sound, the two uncover the global effect this technology has on people each day — including the job of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). Also known as “disambiguation” or “fuzzy matching,” effective entity resolution allows software systems or data stewards to decipher whether records for Richard Smith and Dick Smith may represent the same person, even when it is not overtly suggested by the data.Jeff describes how entity resolution sits as a foundational component of data within MDM, customer relationship management (CRM), know your customer (KYC), supply chain and every other major business process that relies on accurate, trustworthy data. Jeff correctly notes that aside from horrible customer experiences that may arise from a lack of effective entity resolution, “it creates a lot of waste for companies to think you are two or three people instead of one.” Citing a person's example of having their name represented three distinct times in a hotel loyalty club database, he emphasizes the toxicity that comes with a lack of focus on entity resolution for companies who are trying to be both customer and data-centric. While many companies — particularly those already investing in AI/ML — may be attracted to implementing DIY solutions for entity resolution, Jeff notes that it's “super expensive to build”, especially given the complexity and diversity of data, and even language itself. The ability to understand meaning across objects, cultures, languages and even alphabets is at the core of reliable entity resolution and building bespoke solutions for tackling these complex problems — at scale — is beyond the capabilities or budgets of an overwhelming number of companies. When considering a “single version of the truth”, Malcolm unpacks the 30-year history of large, monolithic enterprise resource planning (ERP) suites that created the mindset of master data only living in a singular place within the organization. Thanks to the democratization of IT, the “single version” mindset is shifting both as a practicality and as a business need. Today, master data can be sourced from a single location while supporting multiple versions of truth based on the use case of that data. In talking about the evolution of large-scale entity resolution, its use in MDM to enable multiple versions of the truth and the legacy requirement to have data stewards manually review records, Jeff notes, “There are definitely times…when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But, I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans.”Rather than adding more people into data stewardship roles to support higher confidence matching, Jeff advocates the approach of widening the pool of data used by entity resolution processes — beyond just name and address — to make match decisions, including the possible use of third-party data sources. The last few minutes of the conversation go deep into AI/ML, and how these new technologies are used to augment human data stewardship processes. Jeff makes a great case to suggest that most stewardship tasks could be mostly automated, but that many companies are unable to duplicate pure human judgment. Throughout the conversation, Jeff and Malcolm take extremely complex technical issues and make them digestible and relatable to CDOs — consistently refocusing on how using entity resolution is critical to establish truth in an organization, especially when using MDM systems to manage said truth. CDOs who want to have more informed conversations with their technical staff about the role of entity resolution going beyond just “fuzzy matching” will find this episode of CDO Matters highly insightful. Key Moments[3:42] Entity Resolution Defined[7:50] The Impact of Poor Data Quality[11:23] The Death of the ‘Single Version of the Truth'[15:45] Entity Resolution Failures[24:03] Understanding Unique Entities[26:13] The Cost of Being Wrong[29:10] Human Intervention vs. Trust in the Algorithm[32:05] Gaining New Insights with MDM[35:09] Valuing Human Judgment [40:03] The Future of Entity Resolution in Digital TransformationKey Takeaways What Is Entity Resolution? (1:58)“Entity resolution is recognizing when two things are the same…it's [also] called ‘fuzzy record matching', ‘link detection', ‘disambiguation', ‘match/merge' and lots of names. It's been congealing into this term ‘entity resolution' and is being more used. And really, the definition that I would have for it is recognizing when two identities are the same despite being described as different.” — Jeff JonasThe Cost and Complexity of Efficient Entity Resolution (5:15)“This problem [with poor entity resolution] is ubiquitous, and it turns out, is super expensive to build. People think you can hire a little team and do some AI/ML and think you are going to match well. And I am telling you, you cannot create something competitive in five years for twenty million.” — Jeff JonasIs the ‘Single Version of the Truth' Dead in 2023? (13:07)“There are still many people saying you need a single version of the truth…At an operational level [within a company], there are multiple versions of the truth. The way a marketer would define a customer is different than the way somebody in finance may define a customer, particularly B2B, where one would be a ‘sell to' and the other is a ‘bill to,' and they are both correct. A lot of people still think that is what MDM is, and it can be that if you want it to be that, but it doesn't have to be.” — Malcolm HawkerWorking with Multiple Versions of the Truth (14:12)“I think the ‘single version of the truth'…those are the dark ages, the dark days. The truth is you really want systems that can present truth to the eye of the beholder. It's about who the recipient is. But there are two forms of truth: One is about separating ‘who is who?' from which attribute is the best attribute…and how many entities does the organization have? Do you really want marketing to have a different [data] account than finance?” — Jeff JonasHuman vs. Software: The Role of Human Judgment (29:38)“There are definitely times/cases in data when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans. Second, I will tell you, ‘How does the human do it?' The human is using additional data. It's either data stuck in their head or they're searching it up somewhere…but a lot of times, you have to actually do research…so making these decisions on records with some human intervention is about adding data. And one of the things that we propose is that there are kinds of data that is the initial data needed.” — Jeff JonasAbout Jeff JonasJeff Jonas is not only the CEO and Founder of Senzing but also the Chief Scientist. This podcast interview focuses on the power of entity resolution, and how this powerful technology has the ability to give any organization a competitive advantage. My guest is Jeff Jonas, Founder and CEO of Senzing.Jeff Jonas is an acclaimed data scientist. He is at the forefront of solving some of the world’s most complex business and big data problems for governments and organizations in a variety of industries. A former IBM fellow, Jeff is the leading creator of entity resolution systems. National Geographic recognized him as the Wizard of Big Data, and today numerous organizations rely on his systems to extract useful intelligence from tsunamis of data.He has tackled many high-profile challenges, including identifying potential terrorists, detecting fraudulent behavior in casinos, connecting loved ones after a natural disaster, and modernizing voter registration systems. Jeff is a three-time entrepreneur and sold his last company to IBM in 2005. Jonas is a highly sought-after speaker. He regularly meets with government leaders, industry executives and think tanks around the globe about innovation, national security and privacy. In 2016, Jonas founded Senzing, based on a one-of-a-kind IBM spinout of the G2 technology. His team and patent portfolio – and was founded on the vision to revolutionize and democratize entity resolution. The story behind Senzing inspired me, hence I invited Jeff to my podcast. In the podcast, we explore the power behind entity resolution as the fuel to create the most advanced fraud detection, scoring, recommendation or intelligence systems. We also address the need to democratize this type of technology, so that it can be of benefit to anyone anywhere. And last but not least, we address what’s required to create solutions that people want to tell others about. Here are some of Jeff’s notable quotes:“I became particularly focused, well really obsessed, with this thing called entity resolution, which is technology that figures out when two people are the same. It's a hard problem for folks, and when you can solve that well, you can solve all kinds of problems and create all kinds of competitive advantage. But if you look at these solutions, they primarily require experts to make them operate. They're pretty darn expensive, the good stuff’s at least a million. So, the big idea is to democratize that. Not just to help the big elite organizations understand who-is-who in their data, but what about the small nonprofit who just got duplicates in their Christmas mailing list? What about them? That's the big idea.If you can take 10 x out of the complexity of getting it going, then why not take 10 x out of the price? So, when you change simplicity that much, and you change cost that much, it opens the door to being able to democratize something.”During this interview, we hope you’ll learn these three things:Why you should sometimes bite the bullet to make the hard parts work in order to create real shifts in valueThat with today’s technology there’s a multitude of opportunities to democratize capabilities that up to now were only available to the elite What the ingredients are to create the solutions that turn customers into evangelists See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Airing date: 11/19/2018 Double Homicide - Can Police Get Information From An Alexa Craig Peterson 0:00 A good morning everybody. I sent out some emails to a few people this last weekend. Hopefully you got it on Saturday. If you are on my list, I'm going to be doing a quick one to group a six week course here. Well, not even course really. I'm going to be helping out a small group of friends with business security. So we're going to be walking through everything. I'm giving them just tons of great information. Everything from the employee handbook sections they need sounds like four dozen different employee handbook session sections, what they should be doing with their computers, what they can do for free how to make this all work some some serious training for a C levels within organizations. That includes business owners. And the idea at the end of this is they'll know who to hire, how to hire them, how to select our managed services provider, or even a break fix shop all of the questions they should ask them everything. So this is a beta program people are going to have to apply to get into this program. I think it's going to be a phenomenal thing. And I've already had quite a few responses. So if you think you might be interested, if you are a sea level or business owner and you want to get your arms around security are my people doing the right thing? Why did the IT guys always clam up when I asked him about security? Right? Have you have any of those types of questions and make sure you send me an email let me know I will this week. I think probably I don't know that this week. A lot of people are probably out for Thanksgiving but I'm going to send out a quick email but let me know and I will send you information on how to apply to be in this program we are charging for this program because it's going to take a lot of my time to guide this group. It's a beta program that's going to be leading edge but just email me@CraigPeterson.com if you are interested, get your arms around the security there and your business. Alright, so this morning I was on with Mr. Jack Heath. And we talked quite a bit about this double homicide that happened in New Hampshire and explain in more detail what type of technology is being used by these IoT devices Internet of Things the the Amazon Alexa is the Google Home Unknown 2:27 Craig Peterson joins us on the auto fair listener line and interesting article Craig hopefully doing well. Jeff Jonas, you're talking about this on Friday is a Lexus speech protected? This goes to a case where the the technology the locks, it may have heard something that ties into a double homicide in Farmington almost two years ago. Unknown 2:52 Yeah, good morning, Jack. It does. I spent some time talking about this case on my show this weekend. Very in here. Yeah, it's very interesting. Because we're bringing more of these devices in your homes. You mentioned the course the Amazon Alexa, Google has the Google Home. Apple has it theory. And there have been a couple of cases now. And this one is making some national news where the prosecutors felt that there may be information that's contained within that device, in this case, and Amazon Echo bottom line on this for people that do have these devices, the prosecutor doesn't really understand how the technology works. So I take a second to explain it. But also that the prosecutor may not be entirely wrong here. So jack, what happens with these devices nowadays is they're constantly listening to everything going on the environment. So that part the prosecutor has, right However, they are locally listening for their wake up word. So I'm not going to save the way help word. But you know, when you address these things, you call it by name. And then you give it a command. So nothing's going up to the cloud. Unless the device has been modified, nothing is going up and to the cloud and kill it hears its wake up word. So in the case where there was a double homicide, what would have happened is, it would have hurt the whole homicide because the the detectives in the case think that the original action took place in the kitchen, which is where the Amazon echo that they seize was located. So they think that they probably heard it and it probably did, but that Amazon Alexa sitting there is not going to be sending any of that data to the cloud. And it's only stores a few seconds worth of sound on the device locally. And then it rights over it again, now where things so they're not going to get anything from this and let's the murderer, someone else called out the wake up word, then that 32nd stream of data and it's usually only 30 seconds max would have been sent up to Amazon. And Amazon does keep it now where it might be interesting. And we've seen this before is in a case where maybe someone with crime of passion patch use the Alexa earlier in the day. So they might have ordered pizza, or they might have asked what the weather is tomorrow, etc. In those cases, that device is recording the boys and uploads it to the cloud. In fact, you can go in with any of these devices online and in the apps and listen to the commands that's been given. So in that case, the prosecutor could go to Amazon and say, Hey, listen, we need the recording and listen to see if the murderer had or the accused I had previously use that device, maybe an hour or so before the burgers and then there's a crime of passion. And now they have some suspect at least they have the voice of the suspect now in in the pre or price previous case. In the non New Hampshire case where they went ahead and subpoenaed amazon for the records. Amazon resisted them saying no, we're not going to provide that data to you. And ultimately the guy who was charged with the crime conceited and said to Amazon Yeah, go ahead and release it. They listened to what recordings were and ended up dropping all charges against the guy because there was nothing incriminating on them but it's an interesting question an interesting problem and it's got national prominence now Jack Unknown 6:45 Well, it does and these things are so like you saying your home now and you don't think of what's captured Do you think of sort of what's live and what's happening you know, you know Alexa it's like the ad you know play me some Whitney Houston you know they're not thinking Alexa Bose final score last night of the bears game you know, people aren't thinking of what's picked up right or what's captured Unknown 7:06 right and you know that thing what was the score the bears game that has been used in divorce cases before not not because it's the bears not the Patriots. It's been using cases before because a boyfriend or a girlfriend of the spouse comes over and uses the Alexa it's all recorded in the spouse notices wait a minute now this isn't my playlist this isn't the music I like and and who the heck like the bears and so they have the voice of the cheater and the GD right there on the device it's been used in court that way before it's funny Unknown 7:43 how people used to say careful of stay on the phone the government might be listening and now it's like let's practice listening device into our house and set it up Unknown 7:51 Isn't it funny and and what what else were we told don't get in cars with strangers right and don't take candy from strangers now Now we call a stranger give them money to get in their car and get takes it places guys the whole world just changed entirely hasn't it? Unknown 8:06 Yeah Unknown 8:08 interesting stuff and you know again this is that was a pretty pretty well known double homicide case in terms of pristine solvents murder and a friend Unknown 8:22 you know I guess the whether or not they can get suspect from this and who knows if they're gonna you know there's such a legal ramifications right Unknown 8:30 yeah and Amazon is going to continue to resist from what they're saying right now and really the only way they would be able to release it without any problems is for the owner to say yeah go ahead and leave those records but in this case apparently the owners debt because I imagine it was hers at the time yeah so it isn't please Cassidy I doubt they're going to get anything but maybe they will but they're certainly not likely to get a recording of the murder as it happens like what happened in the Saudi embassy over in Turkey now here we go there's a Unknown 9:05 Alexa can help solve that but they have plenty of video they have plenty of video and other stuff to know that a mystic a show he was not leaving that console and alive. All right. Thank you, Craig. And have a great great Thanksgiving. Unknown 9:16 Hey, thank them people right now on our homepage. If you go to dir there is a an article about travel on Thanksgiving. Google has mapped it out where you should go where you shouldn't go and when it's a really great article. Unknown 9:32 Alright, thanks. Thanks, Craig. Appreciate it. We come back checks out over the financial show airs. Unknown 9:36 Hi everybody. By the way. Have a great Thanksgiving if you don't hear from me, although I'll be on again Tuesday and Wednesday this week. And of course my radio show this Saturday, but I might love Thanksgiving. The O'Reilly Radar Podcast: Context-aware computing, privacy by design, and predicting astroid collisions.O'Reilly's Jenn Webb sits down with Jeff Jonas, an IBM fellow and chief scientist of context computing, Ironman triathlete, and contributing author to Privacy in the Modern Age: The Search for Solutions. Jonas talks about applications of context-aware computing, his new G2 software, and astroid hunting with astronomers at the University of Honolulu. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: The definition I'm using of context is this: to better understand something by taking into account the things around it. Context computing is taking a new piece of data that arrived in the enterprise as a puzzle piece and finding other pieces of data that had been previously seen and see how it fits. Instead of using algorithms staring at puzzle pieces, you end up with whole chunks of the puzzle and it's much easier to make a high-quality prediction. The purpose of G2 is to be able to take structured and unstructured data from batch or streaming sources. Think of it as new observations across a virtually unlimited number of data points. You could think of this as internet of things feeding it or transactional systems or social data or mobile data. It's about weaving all those puzzle pieces together and then using the puzzle pieces as they land to figure out what's important or not and use these system to help focus people's attention. I'm super interested in something called privacy by design. It's an interesting question, when you ask people if they even looked at the terms of use and people say, "No." Here's my prediction: the surveillance society is inevitable; it's irreversible; but the most interesting thing is, it's irresistible and you're doing it. Organizations keep creating these irresistible services. … the general rule is you have to tell your employees and your customers what data you're collecting and why, and then use it for that purpose. Then this whole field of privacy by design, and one of my goals with this G2 project, is I wanted to bake the privacy in before we even started. So, I took every privacy principle that I'd come up with in the prior years, and I baked it into this new thing. There are 600,000 known asteroids, but none of them hit Earth. Now and then, they hit each other. It's only been seen twice. The first time, about five years ago, the Hubble telescope just took a picture. In the middle of the picture is a giant X. It's because two asteroids hit each other. Total accident; it was not predicted. I asked them, 'Well, why didn't you compute if the asteroids were going to hit each other?' They said, 'You silly fool. That's multi-body orbit math, which means expensive, and it's an N-squared problem, which means 10 million computer hours.' I said, 'But if you use these Space Time Boxes, you can figure out if they're ever going to be near each other and then only use the heavy compute if they're going to be near each other.' We did a 25-year forecast, and now they're pointing the telescopes at places in space and actually watching asteroids get close to each other. 2009 was a good year for the DJ/Producer.  As I mentioned in my first post, David Guetta was successful in bridging the gap between electro-house and radio.  Not unlike the 70's when disco bubbled up from the clubs and became mainstream, electro and funky house are well on their way to becoming the new Top 40 du jour. No one appeared more often on remix productions than Dave Aude.  There is no doubt he had his hand in better than half of the massive club hits of the year.  He was often paired against Moto Blanco who continue to whip up their sugary-disco confections.  More often than not, those productions fell flat as they became formulaic opening up Dave's work as the favorite for dancefloors across the globe. From Beyonce to Lady GaGa and everyone in between, Dave was the guy you went to for a guaranteed floor filler; and boy did he deliver! The other winner this year was Cahill.  While the Freemasons have been busy working their magic on future releases off of their sophomore album "Shakedown 2,"  Cahill appears to have slipped in and taken up the slack where the 'masons may have become cost prohibitive for many labels.  Hailing from Liverpool, UK, Anton Powers, Tim Condran and Scott Rosser (i.e. Cahill) are poised to become the next superstar production team.  While they left their mark on many hits in 2009, none were more prevalent than newcomer Agnes' "Release Me."  Of course, it didn't hurt to remix a superstar like Mariah either and it's those kinds of remixes that tend to get people noticed.  With future productions in the works by Pixie Lott & N-Dubz plus new singles from Lemar and Cascada, I fully expect nothing less than club domination in 2010 from these guys. While Dave was hitting the electro masses and Cahill was working their magic in the electro-pop scene, DJ Escape was pounding out the tribal beats on the circuit.  Whether he was pairing up with Tony Coluccio, Johnny Vicious or Dom Capello, DJ Escape (a.k.a. Jeff Jonas) found himself churning out many of last year's biggest club hits.  Most notably, his work on several of Beyonce's singles gained him the kind of notoriety that most DJ/producers can only dream of.  Since the early 90s, hard work and dedication to his craft have clearly paid off as he has become one of 2009's most in-demand producers as well as performers.  You'll be hearing a lot of his work in the final four of this podcast series coming next week. Finally, 2009 witnessed the return of some of clubland's most cherished.  I'm talking about Barry Harris, Pete Hammond and Razor N' Guido.  Barry, as you know, was one half of the acclaimed Thunderpuss production team and R-n-G (a.k.a. Guido Osorio and Peter Osback) were responsible for Kim English's 1999 hit "Unspeakable Joy"  among others.  Pete Hammond is the former chief engineer and producer for Stock Aitken & Waterman (SAW) and was responsible for shaping classic 80s Hi-NRG dance hits like Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" and Donna Summer's "This Time I Know It's For Real."  He has now gone back and updated that sound for a whole new generation of club-goers.  Already churning out the hits, these guys are a breath of fresh air in an already crowded field where many DJs nauseously drop an acapella over the same drum loop.  Party Favorz extends a very warm 'welcome back' to these masters of production and looks forward to hearing and dancing to their work in 2010. Working off the same vibe as my 2009 BPM series along with a little T-Dance thrown in for good measure, I bring you part deuce of the Party Favorz 2009 Year-End Edition.  I'm doing my best to get out the first four by the end of the week, with the second half slated for next, which will be more in line with the original series.  Until the next time . . . enjoy!
