For fleet managers, timing is everything when it comes to vehicle replacement. Wait too long, and maintenance costs spike while reliability plummets. Replace too soon, and you could be throwing away thousands on a vehicle that still has life left in it.In this episode of The Fleet Code, we explore a third option: remanufacturing. Jonathan Carr, President of Vehicle Reman, joins us to break down the numbers behind replacement vs. remanufacturing, which fleets benefit the most, and how to minimize downtime while maximizing cost savings.View a transcription and show notes for this episode here →Takeaways from this episode: Use data to determine when a vehicle is costing you more than it's worthIf your vehicles are highly upfitted, replacement might not be the best optionThink long-term and decide where remans could fit into your immediate–, future–, and even transitionary plansGuest: Jonathan Carr, President, Vehicle RemanAdditional Links and Resources:Learn more about Vehicle Reman (website)How to Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership for Your Fleet (blog)Developing a Fleet Vehicle Replacement Strategy (white paper)
Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). Between December 7 and December 14, 2000, two brothers, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, went on a robbery, rape and murder spree in Wichita. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims' families. However, from this terrible tragedy, arose a story of tremendous triumph, and, of all things …love. Brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr were the product of a childhood filled with toxic influences. Alcohol, violence and sexual activity were routine in their daily lives even as children. These little boys taking on big man responsibilities led to a reckless lifestyle governed by their own twisted rules. After Reginald serves time in jail, the brothers partner up and head west to Wichita in search of easy sex and money. Their crimes continue to escalate, finally culminating in a heinous night of robbery, sexual torture, and gut wrenching violence that claims several innocent lives, and is now forever known as the "Wichita Massacre." Carr joins #OntheMark to talk about his notion of Peak Performance and how you can perform at the peak of your personal skill and ability all of the time. He talks about the idea of any individual's "Greatest Fear and Greatest Treasure" and how those influence mindset and performance. (The theory is one Carr learned from renowned pastor, Tim Keller.) Jonathan then explains why he believe golfers suffer from unnecessary stress and pressure by grading performance by winning or losing. As a more beneficial way approaching performance and expectations, Jonathan describes how Peak Performance is obtained by striving for the characteristics of Courage, Joy, Focus, Determination, Peace and Self-Control. He elaborates on how "Journaling" can lead to a better understanding of events and hence chart a path toward more consistent Peak Performance. He also talks about the Wisdom of Separating Oneself from Expectations, The Origin of Confidence, Dealing with Anxiety, Sources of Momentum, "Lighthouse Statements for a Focussed Mindset, and Eliminating Unnecessary Battles for Improved Focus. When Jonathan Carr first walked through the doors of the Stryker Inc. plant in Arroyo, Puerto Rico, the boyish newbie accountant no doubt turned the heads of a few managers. Having finished college only about 18 months earlier, Carr was now the accounting and finance “lead” for a major software implementation under way at the medical device manufacturer's Puerto Rican plant. To succeed in his new role, Carr would need to have local managers as well as senior IT executives walk him through the manufacturing plant's transaction processes so that he could understand how the software's promise of automation could be leveraged to streamline the plant's accounting close cycle. Looking back, Carr can see that it was his inexperience at the time that made the assignment so enriching to his early career. “You have to find things that you have absolutely no idea how to do because it's those things that will help you to grow exponentially,” remarks Carr, who credits his boss at the time, a Stryker divisional controller, for instilling a risk-taking career mindset. Recalls Carr: “One of his biggest pieces of advice to me was to find opportunities that would either get me promoted or get me fired.” After more than 5 years at Stryker, Carr began to think about finance career opportunities inside high tech, a sector widely populated by growth companies that could help him to move beyond manufacturing's hyperfocus on cost accounting. The SaaS software company Survey Monkey soon captured Carr's attention. “At the time, Survey Monkey's FP&A team wasn't built out and the company was still at less than $100 million in revenue, so here was this opportunity to start thinking about how to take an organization that was growing organically and add strategic levers to it,” comments Carr, who would serve as head of FP&A not only at Survey Monkey but also at yet one other tech firm before stepping into the CFO office at Armis in 2020. Asked about the “deep end of the pool”—or the Stryker plant that he had entered with only 18 months of experience—Carr tell us: “These are the types of opportunities that as a leader I think are so important to now provide to my own team.” –Jack Sweeney

Ghada grew up in Egypt in an aviation family. Her father was a flight instructor (and orthopedic surgeon) and flew a variety of aircraft. Her earliest childhood memories involve sailplanes, small single-engine aircrafts, hot air balloons, and parasailing. Ultralight have always been her favorite. After seeing her first paramotor on a beach in Florida, Ghada began a search for more information on the sport. Her search led her to Paramotor Orlando and Paramotor Academy where she began her training with Eric Dufour and Jonathan Carr in June of 2021. She continues to work closely with the team of instructors including John McCurley and Marco Busse to improve and learn additional skills. She is always joined on the field by her 8-year-old son, Zane, who has shown early interest in flying and has been learning by safely observing and participating when appropriate. Ghada has been primarily flying an Air Conception Nitro 200 with an Everest Cross 21 meter on a Skykart quad designed by Eric Dufour and nicknamed "Little Red Flaming Fire" by Zane. She is currently working on foot launching and practicing for tandem flights on wheels along with the appropriate USPPA ratings. While she finds paramotoring to be one of the most enjoyable forms of flying, she plans to continue exploring and pursuing her goal to fly everything. When not in the air, Ghada is an instructor in the College of Business at the University of Central Florida where she teaches Project Management to undergraduate students. #Girlswhofly #Girlsjustwannafly #Egypt #Florida #Wisconsin #Skykart #EricDufour #Nitro200 #EverestCross #Paramotor #ParamotorOrlando #NorthernlightsParamotor #ParamotorPilot #Momswhofly --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jade-lear/message

In December of 2000, Reginald and Jonathan Carr traveled to Wichita, Kansas and began what would end up being a week-long spree of horrible crimes. The brothers began with kidnapping and robbing, but by the end of the week, their crimes got much more brutal. Six victims would be shot, only one of them surviving. After the brothers were caught, this survivor would play a major role in putting the two men in prison for the rest of their lives.

When it comes to true crime, one of the biggest names that people think of is BTK--a serial killer whose reign of terror over Wichita, Kansas lasted more than 15 years. But while BTK might be the most famous killer, for the people of Wichita, Reginald and Jonathan Carr's week long crime and killing spree caused citizens to fear for their lives both while out and inside their own homes. In the 20 years since the Carr Brothers committed what is now dubbed the Wichita Horror or Wichita Massacre, they have filed multiple appeals, keeping their crimes in headlines in town and preventing closure for the families who lost so much. Hells Canyon Massacre On the Oregon-Idaho border, along a desolate and remote part of the Snake River lies as what is now known as Chinese Massacre Cove, a name given to it from an event back in May 1887. It's a dusty river bank that's located in the middle of Hells Canyon. Many Chinese immigrants who came to the United States during the 19th century would make their way to the American West. They faced considerable discrimination along with challenging working conditions as most became laborers and miners. They'd often find themselves working land that other miners wouldn't want to. This story is disturbing and horrofic for the victims. Wichita Horror It would start on December 7th, 2000 in Wichita, KS where 22 year old Reginald Carr and his 20 year old brother Jonathan Carr would begin their brutal crimes in Wichita, Kansas. During a cold, wintery week in December 2002, brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr decided to go on a crime spree that ended with 5 people dead and 2 others mentally scarred for life. The Carr Brothers’ final heinous act ended on December 15, where they shot 5 friends execution-style in a soccer field in Wichita, Kansas. The brothers failed to make sure their victims were all dead, and one of the women survived. The survivor told a traumatizing story of being raped, and forced rape between victims. If it wasn’t for this eyewitness, we may have never known all the details of the Wichita Massacre. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims’ families. However, from this terrible tragedy, arose a story of tremendous triumph, and, of all things …love.MURDERISH now has a Patreon page. On January 20, 2016, the Supreme Court decided three consolidated death penalty cases: Kansas v. Carr, a second Kansas v. Carr, and Kansas v. Gleason. -- A Kansas jury sentenced Sidney Gleason to death for killing a co-conspirator and her boyfriend to cover up the robbery of an elderly man. In a joint proceeding, a Kansas jury also sentenced brothers Reginald and Jonathan Carr to death for a crime spree that culminated in the brutal rape, robbery, kidnapping, and execution-style shooting of five young men and women. The Supreme Court of Kansas vacated the death sentences in each case, holding that the sentencing instructions violated the Eighth Amendment by failing “to affirmatively inform the jury that mitigating circumstances need only be proved to the satisfaction of the individual juror in that juror’s sentencing decision and not beyond a reasonable doubt.” It also held that the Carrs’ Eighth Amendment right “to an individualized capital sentencing determination” was violated by the trial court’s failure to sever their sentencing proceedings. -- The two questions before the U.S. Supreme Court were: (1) whether the Constitution required the sentencing courts to instruct the juries that mitigating circumstances “need not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt”; and (2) whether the Constitution required severance of the Carrs’ joint sentencing proceedings. -- By a vote of 8-1, the Supreme Court reversed the judgment of the Kansas Supreme Court and remanded the cases. Justice Scalia delivered the opinion of the Court, which held that (1) the Eighth Amendment does not require capital-sentencing courts to instruct a jury that mitigating circumstances need not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, and (2) the Constitution did not require severance of joint sentencing proceedings because the contention that the admission of mitigating evidence by one defendant could have "so infected" the jury's consideration of the other defendant's sentence as to amount to a denial of due process does not stand in light of all the evidence presented at the guilty and penalty phases relevant to the jury's sentencing determination. Justice Scalia’s majority opinion was joined by the Chief Justice and Justices Kennedy, Thomas, Ginsburg, Breyer, Alito, and Kagan. Justice Sotomayor filed a dissenting opinion. -- To discuss the case, we have Kent S. Scheidegger, who is Legal Director & General Counsel at Criminal Justice Legal Foundation.
