It's that time again! Tis the season, many say! And no, it's October fool! Not Christmas! That's in December, duh!I'm talking about "Spooky Penis Month!" What did you think I was talking about? No matter, we start this Halloween doubler with a real bang. A real bang of overly obsessive nuclear family perfection. All THE STEPFATHER wants is a family. A real family. A family that just "needs some order". "We need some order around here!" This is a horror film about a flannel shirt wearing dad (boomer) who obviously has had enough with the way things are done nowadays and played by the inimitable Terry O'Quinn, we see a man on a psychotic mission to attain that perfect family dynamic. But, as one might expect, that doesn't really come to pass.Get ready for one of Laura's "some times" favourite films of all time!
Join hosts Nathan and Ryan as they explore the unsettling and chilling world of "The Stepfather" (1987) in this suspenseful episode of Drive-In Double Feature Podcast. Directed by Joseph Ruben, this psychological horror film stars Terry O'Quinn as a seemingly perfect stepfather with a dark and dangerous secret. Dive into the film's gripping narrative, the tension-filled atmosphere, and the disturbing exploration of domestic horror. Explore how "The Stepfather" blends elements of thriller and horror to create a haunting portrayal of hidden evil within the family unit. Get ready for a discussion that's as intense and eerie as the film itself as we dissect the layers of "The Stepfather."
The Stepfather (1987) is a psychological thriller and horror film directed by Joseph Ruben. The story follows Jerry Blake, a seemingly charming and ideal family man who, in reality, is a disturbed serial killer. After murdering his previous family, he assumes a new identity and marries a widow with a teenage daughter. As his stepdaughter becomes increasingly suspicious of his behavior, she uncovers the dark and violent secrets he hides behind his façade of normalcy. The film delves into themes of domestic terror, deception, and the fragility of trust within family relationships. Julia Roberts goes from a "Pretty Woman" to a "Brown Eyed Girl" in the thriller "Sleeping with the Enemy." The Joseph Ruben film tells the tale of a woman who fakes her own death to escape an abusive husband. Back in 1991, audiences lined up to see America's Sweetheart in the fight of her life, breaking box office records. But now, decades later, can this woman-in-peril plot still stay afloat? Is her new love interest scarier than her husband? And was the "hat montage" absolutely necessary? The Old Roommates take a break from their top-secret swimming lessons and give it a rewatch through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this. Trigger warning: This episode discusses themes of domestic abuse.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. It's officially spooky season and we have a perfect chiller to discuss in this 60th episode! Mark welcomes friend and early 90s thriller expert Tarik Flannagan back on the show to take a trip down memory lane to wintry Maine and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the twisted kid movie The Good Son. Our jaws dropped seeing the in-demand Macaulay Culkin shed his cute and clever Kevin McCallister character for the role of creepy and deranged Henry in the Joseph Ruben film, and they're still dropping today! This will put you on the edge of your seat like the actors on the edge of that cliff! PS. We shout out another great Elijah Wood movie: Radio Flyer!

Come on, ride the train (choo choo ride), and ride it (woo woo) (choo choo ride)! On this episode of Not A Bomb podcast, the guys welcome back friend of the podcast, Nate, to discuss 1995's buddy action comedy - Money Train. Following the success of White Men Can't Jump, studios hoped to replicate the box office return by reuniting Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. The resulting film was 1995's Money Train. Sadly, the film failed to make a White Men Can't Jump sized impact and was both a financial and critical failure. Sure, Money Train might not be White Men Can't Jump quality but were audiences and critics wrong about the movie? Is a 1995 Jennifer Lopez worth the price of admission? Does the chemistry of Snipes and Harrelson elevate a mediocre script? Download this week's episode and find out. As a bonus, you get to hear the gang's thoughts on White Men Can't Jump. Demitri is back to talk at length about this Halloween and Christmas classic! Trigger warning for some true crime talk as the movie release was postponed from release in the U.K. due to a death of a child. The Good Son is a 1993 American psychological thriller film directed by Joseph Ruben and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It was written by English novelist Ian McEwan. Its story follows a young boy named Mark who, after the death of his mother, is sent to stay with his aunt and uncle while his father is away on business. While there he meets his cousin Henry, who shows signs of violent and evil behavior. It stars Macaulay Culkin, Elijah Wood, Wendy Crewson, David Morse, Daniel Hugh Kelly, and Jacqueline Brookes. The film was produced by Joseph Ruben and Mary Ann Page and was released on September 24, 1993. It grossed $12.5 million during its opening weekend and $60.6 million worldwide, against a budget of $17 million.[3] It received negative reviews from critics and has a 26% approval rating based on 50,000 votes on Rotten Tomatoes.[4]
Screenwriter Jay Thornton joins the show to discuss perhaps one of the best picks for this series, RETURN TO PARADISE. A movie even I hadn't heard of, this is a total unheralded gem. It was well-reviewed upon release, but was not a huge box office hit, and is not something I've heard talked about before. Great director (Joseph Ruben, SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY), great cast (Vince Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, Anne Heche) and maybe one of the best moral premises in any movie, period. I watched this at 3am and was riveted and had to get to the end. Major recommend if you dig adult dramas. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support
Ever just look at a kid and go "yeah, they're satan"? Well, we talked about Macaulay Culkin's foray into thrillers, THE GOOD SON. With us is our friend Chelsey Scully, from Tales from the Stitch! The Good Son (1993) dir. Joseph Ruben, "A young boy stays with his aunt and uncle and becomes friends with his cousin, a boy of the same age who shows increasing signs of violent and psychopathic behavior."
On this episode of Talking Terror, who are the boys of the show? Well, one thing that they aren't is anything like the subject of this show! Jerry Blake is a family man, a business man, and a kind neighbor but underneath the friendly smile and the "I'm a Dad" sweater and khaki combo....lies a psychopath. He'll do anything for a perfect family and he means anything! Listen in as your darlings of horror movie podcasting discuss the Ghoul of Geek Keith's film pick of the week; 1987's "The Stepfather" directed by Joseph Ruben and starring Terry O'Quinn. Erin and Paul review two films about teenage girls who suspect the new father figure in their lives might actually be a serial killer: Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 classic SHADOW OF A DOUBT; and Joseph Ruben's 1987 cult B-movie THE STEPFATHER. Plus: our quick takes on THE HATE U GIVE, HALLOWEEN, THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT and CLIMAX.
Dreamscape stars Dennis Quaid as a psychic enlisted into a top-secret government experiment that puts him into the nightmares of another person in order to cure them. However, when the President of the United States becomes the subject, he finds himself embroiled in a plot to assassinate the world leader in his sleep. Kate Capshaw, Max von Sydow and Christopher Plummer co-star in this low-budget but high-concept sci-fi/thriller that would be the precursor to a great many genre films, including THE MATRIX.
Nolan is joined by Ben McBride, Horrorella, and Paul Farrell to discuss Joseph Ruben’s THE STEPFATHER (1987) and Adam Wingard’s THE GUEST (2014). The group discusses two major theatrical horror releases as well as what they've been watching lately before welcoming this double feature of psychotic, too-good-to-be-true strangers into the family. Other movies discussed: IT (2017), IT (1990), IT FOLLOWS (2015), MOTHER! (2017), DEAD AWAKE (2017), SOLE SURVIVOR (1983), SUSPIRIA (1977), MAMA (2013). As will always be the case with this show, be aware that our discussion contains spoilers. If you want to watch the movies before listening to the show, THE GUEST is available to rent via VOD and THE STEPFATHER is available on Blu-ray from Shout! Factory.
