On the debut episode of the newly relaunched Chuck ToddCast, Chuck sits down with Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman. But first, Chuck reacts to the special election results for US Congress in Florida that saw Republicans Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine beat out Democrats Gay Valimont and Josh Weil for the seats vacated by Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz. He also discusses the hotly contested Wisconsin Supreme Court race, where liberal judge Susan Crawford won her race against Brad Schimel, who had millions of dollars of support from Elon Musk. Then, he and Sen. Fetterman discuss a wide range of important issues, beginning with his message to Democrats who are alarmed by the actions of Donald Trump's administration. He shares his reaction to the “Signalgate” scandal and his assessment of what went wrong for Democrats in the 2024 election. Fetterman gives his take on Elon Musk and Doge performing massive cuts across the federal government, as well as the looming tariffs that President Trump is threatening to impose on America's top trading partners. They also try to make sense of the administration's 180-degree turn on longstanding U.S. foreign policy and the president's fixation on Greenland. Finally, they discuss the current lack of a true leader for the Democratic Party, the role of billionaires in politics, and whether Senator Fetterman is considering a run for president in 2028.Timeline:0:00 Introduction2:30 Special elections in Florida8:42 Wisconsin Supreme Court race14:48 Start of John Fetterman interview18:00 Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers?19:00 Message to Democrats that are freaking out23:44 Reaction to “Signalgate”27:10 What happened in 2024?30:44 Elon Musk and DOGE35:22 America's 180-degree turn on foreign policy40:38 President Trump's fixation on Greenland44:28 Fetterman's Mar-A-Lago visit46:45 Who's the leader of the Democratic party?51:04 Influence of billionaires in politics54:08 Will Fetterman run for president in 2028?56:09 Do Democrats need to move to the center?1:01:09 Chuck's final thoughts on the interview with John Fetterman
Jen Psaki breaks down the calculation behind Donald Trump's recent talk of an unconstitutional third term, which is just one of the many shiny objects he's dangled before the press corps to distract from the scandal of Signalgate. Congressman Dan Goldman joins Jen to discuss why Trump's musings about holding onto the White House beyond 2028 warrant our attention. Later Representative Jason Crow, a veteran and outspoken critic of Mike Waltz and Pete Hegseth's careless security breach puts our military in jeopardy. Jen also examines the elections in Wisconsin and Florida, focusing on what could be a seismic shift in voter sentiment in one House district in the Sunshine State, where Josh Weil is polling even with MAGA State Senator Randy Fine. Weil joins Jen to talk about his campaign in a race that's become a referendum on Donald Trump. Florida holds a special election tomorrow for a House seat that has long been solidly red. Now? Maybe a bit less so.Former Congressman Mike Waltz gave up his seat in the 6th Congressional District – the area around Daytona Beach – to accept the post of President Donald Trump's national security advisor. In line to win his vacant seat tomorrow is Trump-backed Randy Fine, a state senator. But in recent days polls have been too close for comfort for many Republicans. Fine's Democratic opponent, math teacher Josh Weil, has raised $10 million for his campaign. Fine has brought in just $1 million. We discuss what we could learn from tomorrow's results. The episode features a conversation between Hawk and Zee Cohen-Sanchez from Nationalgroundgame.com about two special elections in Florida for vacant House seats, with candidates Gay Valamont and Josh Weil running in traditionally Republican districts. Zee, who works with National Ground Game, discusses how these races are unexpectedly competitive, with Democratic candidates out-fundraising their Republican opponents by significant margins. The conversation highlights that early voting results are promising for Democrats, and that issues like veteran benefits, Social Security, and recent controversies involving Trump appointees and Republican text message leaks are resonating with voters in these districts.Zee explains that National Ground Game's approach focuses on "deep canvassing," which involves meaningful conversations with voters about their concerns rather than just asking who they'll vote for. This method has proven effective in flipping traditionally Republican districts in the past. Zee emphasizes that many potential voters in these districts are non-voters rather than Republicans who need to be converted, and that Democratic infrastructure in these areas has been neglected for years. Even if Democrats don't win these races, Zee believes making them competitive is important groundwork for future elections. The conversation concludes with a discussion about how Democrats have failed to effectively organize in primaries and connect online influence to real-world action, unlike Republicans who have built effective pipelines from social media to political engagement. Zee notes that Democrats appear to have more online talent and followers but haven't utilized them effectively to connect with campaigns. The podcast ends with a call to action for listeners to get involved with National Ground Game through phone banking and canvassing to help with the upcoming special elections.Follow Zee on TikTok for up to date information about these important races:https://www.tiktok.com/@zeetothehilltNational Ground Game Website:https://www.nationalgroundgame.com/Start Phone Banking NOW with this link:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D8LH7DC1qvZwkM0fGx0tndAv_qjLujAw9Wkw4rhqCWs/htmlview SUPPORT & CONNECT WITH HAWK- Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mdg650hawk- Support Hawk's Merch Store: https://hawkmerchstore.com- Connect on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mdg650hawk7thacct- Connect on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@hawkpodcasts ALL HAWK PODCASTS INFO- Additional Podcasts Available Here: https://www.hawkpodcasts.com- Listen to Hawk Podcasts On Your Favorite Platform:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3RWeJfyApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/422GDuLYouTube: https://youtube.com/@hawkpodcastsiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/47vVBdPPandora: https://bit.ly/48COaTBSimplecast: https://hawk-droppings.simplecast.com- Hawk Podcasts RSS Feed: https://feeds.simplecast.com/pPVtxSNJ

Tonight on The Last Word: Democrats call for Pete Hegseth to resign over the Signal leak. Also, the race for the House seat vacated by Mike Waltz is closer than expected. Plus, Elon Musk is pouring millions into the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. And Republicans are scrambling as Democrats win special elections. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Barbara McQuade, Josh Weil, Ben Wikler, Pennsylvania State Sen.-elect James Malone, and Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton join Symone Sanders.
Josh Weil, Democratic candidate for Florida's 6th Congressional District, joins Deep Dive to discuss what could be one of the most consequential special elections in American history. A public school teacher and single father, Weil explains why his April 1st race represents more than just a local contest – it's potentially the first domino in Democrats' path to regaining control of the House. With Republicans currently holding the slimmest House majority in historical memory, the stakes couldn't be higher. Weil articulates how flipping a seat that went Republican by 32 points would send shockwaves through the GOP, demonstrating that there is no job security from Donald Trump's endorsement. This message could fundamentally alter how Republican representatives approach their roles, forcing them to be more responsive to constituents rather than blindly following party leadership. What makes Weil's campaign particularly fascinating is his embrace of progressive policies in a traditionally conservative district. He challenges conventional wisdom about Democratic messaging, arguing that the party has failed in messaging for over a decade while offering concrete examples of missed opportunities to connect with working-class voters. Weil doesn't hold back criticism of his own party, particularly Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's inability to extract concessions during recent negotiations, demonstrating his commitment to honest assessment over partisan loyalty. The conversation weaves between local campaign strategy and national implications, highlighting how special elections occurring outside the typical cycle allow candidates to focus more directly on constituent concerns. As Weil puts it, drawing from his 13 years teaching in Title I schools.Whether you're in Florida's 6th district or simply concerned about the future of American democracy, this episode provides critical context for understanding what's at stake on April 1st.Josh Weil for CongressGay Valimont for CongressVote in Florida-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

Friend of the show and Patreon backer Josh Weil is a busy guy these days. Josh is running in a special election as the Democratic nominee to be the new Representative for Florida's 6th District. But Josh is such a dedicated fan that he took some time off from his busy schedule to join us and talk about three Batman stories from the Golden Age of Comics: the first appearance of Dr. Death, the first super villain Batman ever fought; the first appearance of Hugo Strange; and a fun story where Batman and Robin solve murders that are using superstitions as the motif of the killings. Joshua Weil is the Democratic nominee for Congress in Florida's 6th Congressional District. On April 1st he'll be facing Trump-endorsed State Senator Randy Fine in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Mike Waltz, who was selected by Trump to serve as National Security Advisor. Josh is a public educator and a single dad of two boys. He's worked in Orange County Public Schools at their Alternative Education Centers, and since 2018, with the School District of Osceola County as a secondary math and science teacher, an instructional coach, a dean of students, and an MTSS Coordinator. You may be asking: does America even have free and fair elections in GOP-gerrymandered hostage states like Florida? Under a wannabe-autocrat like Ron DeSantis, voting becomes a defiant fact check of the legitimacy of the GOP's power. If they were truly effective at governing, why would they resort to gerrymandering and other forms of voter suppression to maintain control? By voting, even if your vote is illegally not counted, your presence casting the vote adds up, and together the exit polls can indicate whether the election was stolen. Look to Venezuela's grassroots powerhouse effort to count votes before they were conveniently misplaced. In Venezuela, the voters proved the opposition leader Edmundo González, not Russian-backed dictator Nicolás Maduro, won the election. Several independent investigations confirmed their victory. While Maduro clings to power, voting remains a powerful fact check, confronting him with his own illegitimacy and galvanizing the movement to oust him. In Florida, two special elections will take place on April 1—to replace pedo Putin-puppet Matt Gaetz in the Congressional 1st District with Democratic challenger Gay Valimont, and to replace Zelenskyy co-extortionist Mike Waltz in the Congressional 6th District. Longtime public educator and champion of public schools Josh Weil stops by Gaslit Nation to discuss how you can help support his campaign to hold Elon Musk and MAGA accountable. Early voting is March 22nd to 29th. To phonebank for Josh Weil, check out these virtual phone get-out-the-vote events! I know. I escaped Florida after living there for half of my life. I don't have many kind words to say about the state that has mostly become a bad joke. But I'll sing their praises if the people of Florida come through on April 1. (And I'm not talking about an April Fools prank!)There are two special congressional races in FL being held that day to replace two of D'ump's cabinet nominees. Matt Gaetz left Congress as the rep for District 1 when he was ridiculously nominated to be AG. Thankfully we dodged that bullet and no longer have Gaetz in Congress. Rep Mike Waltz resigned from his seat representing FL6 to become D'ump's new national security advisor. The special election to fill those two seats from Florida is set for April 1, with the deadline to register this Monday, March 3. Early voting begins March 22.Today, the Democratic candidate running from FL6, Josh Weil, joins Howie Klein and me on the show today. There was a time in the pre-Crisis days when Batman and Superman were the best of friends. But then the Crisis, and Frank Miller, came along, and things changed. For most of a decade, Batman and Superman's relationship ranged from confrontational to cordial. Patreon backer Josh Weil returns this week to trace the evolution of that relationship back to friendlier terms in three Superman stories guest starring Batman. Dark Knight Over Metropolis (Superman V.2 # 44, Adventures of Superman V.1 # 467, Action Comics V.1 # 654) Hazard's Choice (Action Comics V.1 # 719) Superman: The Wedding Album Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
Our very first Dick Grayson backer, Josh Weil, makes his return to the podcast this week, but he's not picking the stories. Instead, he has gifted his picks this month to our youngest backers, his sons, David and Alexander. They give us stories that show they love sidekicks, young butlers, and giant monsters. Robin War (Robin War # 1-2, Grayson # 15, Detective Comics V.2 # 47, We Are Robin # 7, Robin: Son of Batman # 17, Gotham Academy # 13, Red Hood/Arsenal # 7, Teen Titans V.5 # 15) Young Alfred: Pain in the Butler OGN Justice League Vs. Friend of the show and Patreon backer Josh Weil decided to take up a challenge: come up with three stories that he thought could make the top 50 of the Big Board. And gotta, say, with no spoilers, he did a pretty good job. We see Bruce Wayne mourning the loss of his son, Batman and Catwoman taking a post-engagement trip and Nightwing taking fight. Undone (Batman & Robin V.2 # 18) Rules of Engagement (Batman V.3 # 33-35) Leaping Into the Light (Nightwing V.4 # 78-83) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
Josh Weil is back, and he's bringing his favorite character with him. It's time for Batman to team up again with Ollie Queen, Green Arrow. We're reading the classic Haney/Adams story where Ollie grows his signature facial hair, a team up that also includes the Question, and some questionable content involving Poison Ivy. And just to be clear, the proposed episode title of "Flipper Penis" would have lead to some issues on some podcast apps, or otherwise that would be the title. The Senator Has Been Shot! Will is so very tried. Three weeks in a row of big superhero stories. Not a single mobster or Year One era, bare bones Batman story to be found. Because this week, Dick Grayson tier Patreon backer Josh Weil is back, and we're talking Batman getting super powers! We get a Freaky Friday with the Justice League, a messy alien invasion and a Geoff Johns joint that doesn't know what it wants to be. James Robinson might be best known for writing the 90s classic, Starman, but he's written a bunch of Batman too. And this week, Josh Weil stops by to talk about three of Robinson's stories. We have a Pulp Heroes annual, and two tales of Two-Face. There are some unfortunate sexy corpses, questionable editing and the question of when a story really deserves a sequel. Pardon the sound on the back half here; there were some technical difficulties and I cleaned them up as best I could I Am a Gun (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Annual #7) Face the Face (Batman V.1 #651-654, Detective Comics V.1 #817-820) Deface the Face (Detective Comics V.3 #988-993) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
The Mad Hatter is one of Batman's oddest major foes. While all of the rogues who have existed since the Golden Age have gone through various permutations, few are as wildly different. Sometimes he is obsessed with hats. Sometimes he is a mind control scientist. Sometimes he is obsessed with Alice In Wonderland and has a creepy obsession with young girls he deems his Alices (super creepy). And we have read very little featuring the character for this show. So, our buddy Josh Weil is back to remedy that. Find out what other classic character debuted in the same story as the Hatter, read some great Greg Rucka and hear Will get apoplectic about a book that competes for the bottom spot on the Big Board. Linewide crossovers are a big part of comics, and Batman has often been a big part of these kind of events. But our buddy Josh Weil comes back on the show to talk about three crossovers form the 90s where Batman doesn't play a big part. So we talk about Batman, sure, but also about Hal Jordan, Blue Devil, Trickster, and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Will gets introduced to all sorts of madness, and Matt relives his younger days, and thus turns slightly more into dust Zero Hour: A Crisis in Time (Zero Hour #4-0, Batman V.1 #511) Underworld Unleashed (Underworld Unleashed #1-3, Underworld Unleashed: Devil's Asylum #1, Underworld Unleashed: Patterns of Fear #1) Final Night (Final Night #1-4, Parallax: Emerald Night #1) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
Welcome to teen hero comics of the 90s. It's a very very mixed bag. For all the charm that some have, some... don't. Friend of the show and Patreon backer Josh Weil really wanted to talk about Impulse #50, so we found some other stories of teen heroes in the 90s and Batman, specifically the teen heroes of Young Justice. This gave Will his first non-Star Trek exposure to two time GLAAD award winning writer Peter Allen David and another go around with Joe Kelly. And he was not too happy about it. But a good time was had by all in the talking, and that's what really counts Young Justice: Origins (Young Justice V.1 # 1-6) First Fool's (Impulse # 50) Silent, But Deadly (Superboy V.4 # 85) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
He's a billionaire who fights crime with nothing but his wits and his training. He has a family of sidekicks. He is known for having all sorts of emotional baggage and issues. He is... Green Arrow. It Takes Two Wings to Fly (Detective Comics V.1 #559) The Brotherhood of the Fist (Green Arrow V.2 #134-135, Detective Comics V.1 #723, Robin V.2 #55, Nightwing V.2 #23) The Arrow and the Bat (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #127-131) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill
Dick Grayson-tier Patreon backer Josh Weil is back this week, and he brings with him a heck of a story. War Games was the early 00s crossover where a huge gang war breaks out in Gotham, and so, we get a 25 park crossover! That's the longest single story we've covered in here. Can we make it? What do we cover for the other two stories? How many problematic elements are in this story? You'll just have to listen to find out. War Games (Batman: The Twelve Cent Adventure # 1, Detective Comics V.1 # 797-799, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight # 182-184, Nightwing V.2 # 96-98, Batman: Gotham Knights # 56-58, Robin V.2 # 129-131, Batgirl V.1 # 55-57, Catwoman V.3 # 34-36, Batman V.1 # 631-633) Night of the Penguin (Detective Comics V.1 824) The Little Red Book (Batman Adventures V.1 # 9) Content Warning: I usually save these for the episode, and we added an intro to the beginning for those who don't read this text, but this week, we needed to call this out up front. We record these episode a month out, so sometimes, situations change and we can't really shuffle the episodes around because of ranking. This week's episode features a story where a school shooting is central to the action. This has become even more triggering than usual over the course of the time since the episode was recorded, so while it is not something discussed in detail, it is present and we wanted to let you know, in case you wanted to skip the first 40 minutes or so of the episode. Also, Matt and Will have decided to donate all the Patreon revenue for this month to the Violence Policy Center (vpc.org), a non-profit that "works to stop gun death and injury through research, education, advocacy, and collaboration." If you haven't joined the Patreon yet, this might be a good month to kick in a dollar, listen through the back catalog of bonus stuff, and if you want to drop off after July 1st, we completely understand, but know that this month your money is going to something bigger than our silly little show. Or stick around and listen to more of our silly little show. Up to you. But we feel like we need to do something because things need to change. And superhero comics are inherently political, no matter what anybody might say. Quicksand (Simon & Schuster)A daring, brilliant new novel from Man Booker Prize finalist Steve Toltz, for fans of Dave Eggers, Martin Amis, and David Foster Wallace: a fearlessly funny, outrageously inventive dark comedy about two lifelong friends. Liam is a struggling writer and a failing cop. Aldo, his best friend and muse, is a haplessly criminal entrepreneur with an uncanny knack for disaster. As Aldo's luck worsens, Liam is inspired to base his next book on his best friend's exponential misfortunes and hopeless quest to win back his one great love: his ex-wife, Stella. What begins as an attempt to make sense of Aldo's mishaps spirals into a profound story of faith and friendship. With the same originality and buoyancy that catapulted his first novel, A Fraction of the Whole, onto prize lists around the world--including shortlists for the Man Booker Prize and the "Guardian" First Book Award--Steve Toltz has created a rousing, hysterically funny but unapologetically dark satire about fate, faith, friendship, and the artist's obligation to his muse.Sharp, witty, kinetic, and utterly engrossing, Quicksand is a subversive portrait of twenty-first-century society in all its hypocrisy and absurdity.Praise for Quicksand:“Steve Toltz possesses an imagination that knows no limits. His work is mordant, prophetic, and very funny. He is a true original.” —Patrick McGrath, author of Asylum“Steve Toltz writes with a singular, propulsive energy, with sentences and characters that rise off the page with a force that leaves you almost breathless. There is more heart, and joy and compassion and hard-earned wisdom in Quicksand than seems possible for a single novel; it is life, literature at its fullest.”—Dinaw Mengestu, award-winning author of The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears and All Our Names“Quicksand is one of the smartest, funniest, angriest novels I have ever read. But it's also a surprisingly touching meditation on friendship and family, on art and God, on law-breaking and law enforcement. … A brilliant piece of fiction, from a novelist who so clearly sees the outsized pleasures and terrors of our troubled time.” —Brock Clarke, author of An Arsonist's Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England and The Happiest People in the World“Quicksand crackles with such intensity it made me turn the pages with a harder snap, lean closer, want to gnaw the words. This is a novel of sneak-attack seriousness, so funny it fools you into letting down your guard—then knocks you upside the head with intense intelligence, probing thought, raw pain. For all the wit and wisdom in this book, all the pleasures contained in its raucous, furious, fearless pursuit of truths, the greatest thrill comes when it strikes you that you’ve never read anything quite like it before, that you just might have stumbled—startlingly, unsettlingly—on something close to genius in the writing of Steve Toltz.”—Josh Weil, author of The Great Glass Sea“Steve Toltz is a verbal magician and lunatic storyteller. Every page of this novel bursts with ideas and humor and pathos and incisive riffs that perfectly express the grand absurdities of the irrational universe, along with the smaller ones of a very particular friendship. Quicksand is the work of a writer in full command of his many outsized gifts, not least of which is his humanity.”—Teddy Wayne, Whiting Award-winning author of The Love Song of Jonny ValentineSteve Toltz was born in Sydney and graduated from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales. His first novel, A Fraction of the Whole, was shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. After working on Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in 1996, Anton Monsted went on to co-found Luhrmann’s music company, Bazmark Music, and served as Music Supervisor and Executive Music Producer on Luhrmann’s film Moulin Rouge! He was Executive Producer of Luhrmann’s 2004 campaign for Chanel No.5 starring Nicole Kidman, and was the Co-Producer and Executive Music Supervisor for Luhrmann’s Australia and The Great Gatsby. He is currently Senior Vice President of Music at Twentieth Century Fox, and, notably, has been Steve Toltz's friend since they met in a bowling alley in 1988.

The Great Glass Sea (Grove Press) In The Course of Human Events (Soft Skull Press) Join us for a captivating reading from two dynamic writers of fiction. Josh Weil's critically acclaimed 2009 novella collection The New Valley was the winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” selection, and a New York Times Editor's Choice. He follows this success with his debut novel, The Great Glass Sea, an epic, dystopian tale inspired by the true story of Agrikombinat Moskovsky, an area on the outskirts of Moscow that was transformed into a 24 hour greenhouse. Set in an alternate present, Weil spins a tale of brotherly love steeped in Russian folklore that will appeal to fans of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, beautifully illustrated throughout with Weil's own line drawings. In this thrilling debut novel - equal parts satire and morality play - Mike Harvkey shines a sharp light on the dark and radical underbelly of the floundering American Midwest. As he leads us down the violent spiral of a desperate youth, he explores with unflinching acuity the ugly nature of hate, the untempered force of personality, and the sometimes horrific power of having someone believe in you. Praise for Josh Weil "Weil meticulously imagines people and their histories, and presents them as a product of their places. This is perhaps the hardest thing for a fiction writer of any age, working in any form, to accomplish.."--Anthony Doerr, New York Times Book Review "[Weil] gives voice to those without, to those entombed on forgotten hillsides, to those orphaned and tending calves and tractors, reminding us that no matter how isolated, how lonely, tender hearts burn everywhere, they burn bright, and they burn on."--Don Waters, The Believer Praise for Mike Harvkey "With this stunning debut, a major new talent bursts upon the world of American Letters. In the Course of Human Events is as brave as it is brilliant, as unsettling as it is important, and unlike anything else I've read. Mike Harvkey writes scenes of uncommon imagination, characters that leap to life at a single stroke. They will grab you in a bear hug, or by the throat (and sometimes both), and carry you along through a story every bit as gripping. A fearless exploration of an uncomfortable corner of the human heart--and an America little examined and even less understood--this is an important novel. Add to that the fact that it's also so damn funny and here comes one hell of a book." - Josh Weil, author of "The New Valley" "In the Course of Human Events is a dark, and yet compassionate gaze into the frustrated, violent, and broken heart of America. Mike Harvkey has written a gripping, bold and daring novel unlike any I've had the pleasure of reading before."--Dinaw Mengestu, MacArthur Genius Fellow and author of "How to Read the Air" and "The Wonderful Things that Heaven Bears" Josh Weil is the author of the The Great Glass Sea (Grove, 2014) and The New Valley (Grove, 2009), a New York Times Editors Choice that won the Sue Kaufman Prize from The American Academy of Arts and Letters, the New Writers Award from the GLCA, and a “5 Under 35” Award from the National Book Foundation. Weil's other writing has appeared in Granta, Esquire, One Story, The Sun, and The New York Times. A recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, MacDowell, Bread Loaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, he has been Distinguished Visiting Writer at Bowling Green State University and Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi. He lives in the northern the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mike Harvkey grew up in rural northwest Missouri, near the city of Independence, a crystal meth stronghold long before Breaking Bad. When he moved to New York in 2001 to attend Columbia's Creative Writing MFA Program as a Bingham Fellow, he began training Kyokushin, a brutal form of martial art known for bare-knuckle fighting, and was promoted to black belt in 2006. One of his short stories won Zoetrope All-Story Magazine's short fiction contest; others have been published in Mississippi Review and Alaska Quarterly Review.
Josh Weil's The New Valley, published last year, was honored with a "5 Under 35" National Book Award and was a New York Times Editors Choice selection. It recently was honored with the 2010 New Writers Award in Fiction from the Great Lakes Colleges Association.Set in the hardscrabble hill country between West Virginia and Virginia, the three linked novellas open up the private worlds of three very different men as they confront love, loss, and their own personal demons.Weil's fiction has been published in Granta, American Short Fiction, Narrative, and Glimmer Train. He has written nonfiction for The New York Times, Granta Online, and Poets and Writers. Since earing his MFA from Columbia University, he has received a Fulbright grant, a Writer's Center Emerging Writer Fellowship, the Dana Award in Portfolio, and fellowships from the Bread Loaf and Sewanee Writers' conferences. As the 2009 Tickner Fellow, Josh Weil is the writer-in-residence at Gilman School in Baltimore.Recorded On: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
