In this podcast episode, former professional soccer player Amir Lowery shares insights from his journey through the American soccer landscape and his transition into advocacy and leadership. A Wake Forest standout from 2001 to 2004, Lowery was drafted by the Colorado Rapids in 2005 and spent several years navigating both MLS and USL rosters, including stints with Kansas City and the Montreal Impact. After retiring from professional play in 2012, he launched a new chapter focused on social impact—culminating in his 2020 run for D.C.'s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Lowery discusses the origins of Open Goal Project, a youth soccer initiative started in 2015, and the organization's shift in 2019 from supporting players to establishing its own club. He outlines the current structure of Open Goal, including how many teams they field and the challenges they face operating within the U.S. youth soccer system. Lowery offers candid thoughts on what needs to change in the national setup, comparing today's youth development landscape to when he began Open Goal. He closes by reflecting on the best and worst aspects of soccer in America—emphasizing both its immense potential and the barriers that still limit access and equity.        We remember the great George Wendt, America's favorite barfly, Norm Peterson on Cheers.  Wendt had all kinds of ties to Kansas City and is remembered as a great family man and one of the all time great characters in the history of television.    While Trump was working on Cap Hill for the Big Bill, he kept bringing up Joe Biden's auto pen signatures and it's pretty clear now a huge investigation is about to begin.  Who exactly ran our country the last four years?    Victor Davis Hanson, on a podcast, muses that Kansas City could be a new destination for the FBI to have headquarters outside DC.  If true, this could be thousands of jobs here.    The Royals have another weak night at the plate and fall to the Giants, 3-2.  KU is having an incredible baseball season and their coach has just won a huge award.  And an incredible, global cycling event is here this holiday weekend and it sounds like the toughest event ever.

How important are independent pet stores to our community? In this episode, Teresa Miller, president of IndiePet and owner of Treats Unleashed, discusses the vital role of local pet retailers in building community connections. She shares insights into the challenges these stores face, including e-commerce competition and inflation, while highlighting how they can remain competitive through innovation and customer service. Teresa explains how IndiePet acts as a bridge between retailers and manufacturers to create sustainable industry growth. She also touches on the growing trend of cat ownership and the importance of fostering partnerships between independent pet businesses. Main Topics: The Role of IndiePet – Supporting independent pet stores and their impact on the pet industry. Challenges in the Pet Industry – Inflation, e-commerce competition, and shifting consumer trends. Community Engagement – How local pet stores foster relationships and support pet parents. Retail Trends & Innovations – Exclusive products, pet product rotations, and service expansions. Partnerships with Pet Businesses – How pet sitters, trainers, and groomers can collaborate with retailers. Main takeaway: “Neighborhood pet stores are more than just retailers; they're gathering places where pet owners connect, learn, and support each other.” In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to feel disconnected, but independent pet stores, pet sitters, and dog walkers play a vital role in bringing pet lovers together. These businesses aren't just about products and services—they help foster relationships, educate pet parents, and create a support system for those who want the best for their pets. As pet sitters and dog walkers, we have a unique opportunity to be connectors in our communities. We're the trusted professionals who see pet parents daily, hear their concerns, and can introduce them to local pet stores, trainers, and groomers who align with their needs. We can help pet owners find the best products, discover community events, and connect with like-minded pet lovers who share their values. From breed meet-ups and pet adoption events to sharing tips on the best local pet-friendly spots, we have the power to shape a thriving pet community. By partnering with independent pet stores, we strengthen these essential small businesses and create a network that benefits pets and their families. About our guest: Teresa Miller is the owner of Treats Unleashed, a chain of independent pet stores with 19 locations between St. Louis and Kansas City, with more on the way. She began her career in the banking industry before transitioning to a tech startup in New York City. In 2002, she founded Treats Unleashed, which has grown organically into a trusted resource for high-quality pet products, customer education, and community partnerships. Beyond building her business, Teresa is deeply involved in her local community, volunteering with the Bi-State Pet Food Pantry to help provide pet food to owners in need. She is also a strong advocate for women-led businesses, actively supporting Mastermind programming for early-stage women entrepreneurs. On a national level, Teresa collaborates with the National Retail Federation (NRF) as an advocate for small retail businesses. Most recently, she worked with NRF to support the Credit Card Competition Act, introduced by Senators Roger Marshall and Dick Durbin in 2022, aimed at increasing competition and reducing swipe fees for businesses. As the president of IndiePet, a trade association dedicated to supporting independent pet retailers, she continues to champion small pet businesses, fostering connections between retailers and manufacturers to ensure industry growth and sustainability. Send us a textGet ready to saddle up and dive into the Wild West like never before! Introducing the dynamic duo, Sam Bass and Calamity Jane, your thrilling new hosts for the extended content of the Wild West Podcast. Adventure awaits as they bring the legendary tales of the frontier to life! A dust highway stretching across the plains moved six million cattle and reshaped America forever. The Western Cattle Trail emerged from economic necessity after the Civil War, when Texas found its millions of longhorns worth pennies locally but commanding up to $40 per head in northern markets. This price gap launched an unprecedented economic engine that would fundamentally alter the American West.Following the path blazed by John T. Lytle in 1874, the trail stretched from the Texas Hill Country through Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), into Kansas and Nebraska, eventually reaching Montana, Wyoming, and even Canada. For two decades, this corridor moved more livestock than all other cattle trails combined, becoming the literal lifeblood of the western economy. The reality of trail life stripped away romantic notions of cowboy existence. Young men—a diverse mix of Southern whites, freed slaves, and Mexican vaqueros—endured brutal conditions for $30 monthly wages. They faced constant dangers: stampedes triggered by lightning storms, treacherous river crossings, and complex negotiations with Native American tribes whose lands they crossed. Upon reaching destinations like Dodge City—"the wickedest little city in America"—these trail-weary cowboys created an economic ecosystem catering specifically to their needs and desires.Beyond moving cattle, the trail catalyzed transformative development across multiple industries. Railroads expanded to service the cattle trade. Meatpacking centers in Chicago and Kansas City exploded with growth. The trail established America's dominance in beef production while fundamentally changing the nation's diet. Though the era ended in the 1890s—ironically made obsolete by the very development it created through barbed wire, expanding railroads, and changing consumer preferences—its legacy pervades American culture and economy today. What seemingly simplistic economic corridors might be reshaping our world right now, their impacts not yet fully visible? Listen as we explore the remarkable story of how moving cows across the plains built modern America.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included. "Edward Masterson and the Texas Cowboys," penned by Michael King, takes readers on an exhilarating ride through the American West, focusing on the lively and gritty cattle town of Dodge City, Kansas. This thrilling dime novel plunges into the action-packed year of Ed Masterson's life as a lawman, set against the backdrop of the chaotic cattle trade, filled with fierce conflicts, shifting loyalties, and rampant lawlessness. The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law. By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

In this special episode of Gangland Wire, host Gary Jenkins takes a deep dive into the life, career, and controversy surrounding Pete Rose, the legendary Major League Baseball icon who recently passed away at 83. Known as “Charlie Hustle,” Rose's name is forever etched in baseball history with franchise records in games played, hits, and runs scored—primarily during his storied tenure with the Cincinnati Reds. Gary reflects on Rose's gritty, high-energy playing style, recalling key moments like his controversial performance in the 1980 World Series, a memory that holds special weight for Kansas City fans. But Rose's career wasn't just about records and accolades—it was also marked by one of the most notorious scandals in sports history. This episode tackles the darker side of Rose's legacy: his gambling addiction. Gary explores how Rose's betting habits led him into dangerous territory, including associations with mob-connected bookies, mounting debts, and investigations that eventually culminated in the damning Dowd Report. With evidence linking his bets directly to baseball games—including some he played in—Rose's choices ultimately cost him his place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Listeners will hear a detailed breakdown of Rose's gambling spiraled out of control, the organized crime figures behind his wagers, and the broader integrity implications for the sport. Gary shares his perspective on the ongoing debate: Should Pete Rose be reinstated, or does the scandal outweigh his accomplishments? Subscribe to get gangster stories weekly. [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers out there, there's that little special extra for you guys. Because of the passing of Pete Rose, former MLB star, I want to talk about what happened to him. He died of natural causes last week at age 83. You know, this guy was a hell of a ballplayer. I'm sure most, I think everybody should know who he is, but if you don't, I'm going to tell you a little bit about him. He mainly played with the Cincinnati Reds. He also played with the Phillies and maybe the Expos for a short period of time, but mainly the Phillies and the Reds. He set Cincinnati Reds franchise records like you couldn't believe, and he became the face of the Reds. After he retired from baseball, he became the Reds' manager for a period of time. We remember him pretty well in Kansas City because he played for the Phillies in 1980, and they beat us in the seventh game of the 80s series. He's a Cincinnati native, and he was the all-time leader for the Cincinnati Reds in games played, 2,722, played appearances, 12,344. [1:08] Runs scored, 1,741, hits, 3,358, singles, 2,490, doubles, 601, and walks, 1,210. I guess he wasn't a big home run hitter, but anyhow, he was a hell of a player. Plus, defensively, he was magnificent. He was hustling all the time. And his whole career, he had 4,256 hits. Now, anybody that goes over 4,000 hits is a pretty big deal in baseball. He was a hustler like you couldn't believe, both on the field and off the field. You know, once early in his career, he drew a lot of criticism for taking out a catcher in an all-star game when, you know, there's nothing at stake there. But he is blasted home, and the ball beats him home, and he just takes out that catcher. He played with complete abandon, if you ever remember seeing him play. [2:05] But he had an Achilles heel, and that's why we're here today. He was either a gambling addict, or at the very least, he wanted to gamble on sports so bad that he r...

Welcome back T&J fam! This week we get an update from Josh on his joblessness and the drama that is his job shutting down. Marty then updates us on his finger, his trip to Kansas City, and the amazement known as Menards. Following that, Marty presents a question stemming from a discussion with his brother in law, Big Rick, about approaching homeless people and the best ways to help. We dive in and discuss the way we view people who are homeless and our mindset towards providing help. We try to acknowledge the difficulty that this situation presents while still challenging the perspective of our hearts. Then we look at our beliefs and try to see how the bible might inform this topic. As always, we hope you enjoy!

The story of the Irish Brigade – and the ghosts left behind. (“The Strange History Of Safety Coffins”) *** In one particular hospital, the staff avoid booking people into Room 228 – and for good reason. (“Haunted Hospital Room”) *** A sewing machine salesman sees a car speeding towards him – a car like none he had ever seen. When the passenger gets out, he has a terrifyingly large grin, and spoke to him – but without using any words. (“Indrid Cold: The Grinning Man”) *** Cloven footprints are found in new-fallen snow. That in itself would not be strange, except that the creature that left the prints was only walking on two legs. But that was only the beginning. (“I Have This Vivid Memory”) *** John Emil List planned the murders so carefully, he almost got away with it. In fact, it took 18 years to catch him. RJ Bell, Steve Fezzik, Mackenzie Rivers and Scott Seidenberg discuss the NFL schedule release. The guys also discuss Fezzik's NFL power rankings and the NBA playoffs. RJ Bell (0:05-0:24) opened the podcast celebrating the team's sharp NFL schedule release analysis and hinted at Fezzik's overenthusiasm. Mackenzie Rivers (0:24-0:26) supported RJ's disciplinary stance. RJ detailed NBA playoff promotions (0:26-1:44), highlighting Mackenzie's 20+ unit season profit and Fezzik's 21.7, while Diamond Dave Esler led with 37 units. Mackenzie (1:45-1:52) admitted frequent alignment with Fezzik's picks. RJ offered bundled picks at a discounted price. Fezzik (4:47-5:57) introduced the critical Week 18 schedule impact, noting six teams—Jets, Washington, Vegas, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Indy—may face weakened division leaders, offering betting value. RJ (5:57-6:19) supported this with Kansas City's precedent of resting players. Fezzik (7:02-7:14) warned about Saints and Jets possibly tanking due to QB issues. Scott Seidenberg (7:26-8:24) declared Kansas City's schedule as brutal, starting in Brazil, facing the Eagles, and enduring short-week matchups against Buffalo and Baltimore. RJ (8:24-13:19) added context about KC's fatigue from years of dense scheduling and pointed to their 11th hardest schedule overall. Fezzik (13:20-14:32) explained that by Robbie Greer's method, the Giants had the hardest (+1.6 per game) and the 49ers the easiest (-1.4). Fezzik (16:48-20:05) outlined a strategy of betting unders on NFC teams, due to their road-heavy schedules. RJ (22:37-23:55) spotlighted the 49ers' easiest stretch—Week 13 to 17—and New England's favorable Weeks 5-9. Scott (24:37-25:19) dissected Dallas' post-bye stretch as brutal. RJ (25:26-26:08) showcased Cincinnati's taxing three-game stretch against Baltimore, Buffalo, Baltimore. Betting insights included RJ (29:46-29:52) favoring Miami over Cincinnati in Week 16 and Fezzik (52:06-52:09) favoring Minnesota vs Cleveland in London. RJ (54:53-55:04) noted the 49ers' early season is manageable but highlighted their late-season schedule as historically easy. RJ (1:24:28-1:24:44) confidently placed a best bet on 49ers over 10 wins, supported by Mackenzie. Scott (1:25:32-1:26:07) advised splitting bets on Broncos and Chargers to fade the Chiefs in AFC West. Mackenzie (1:40:21-1:41:31) warned of increased NBA playoff injuries, stating all-star absences are five times higher than 20 years ago. He and Scott (1:43:57-1:44:05) saw the Knicks as undervalued against the Pacers, projecting the Knicks as deserving stronger home court consideration than the market indicates. Throughout, RJ questioned the sustainability of the Chiefs and emphasized the 49ers' position as strategically undervalued. The panel agreed that San Francisco remains a betting target despite roster losses, with RJ and Mackenzie noting their favorable odds across the board. Learn more about your ad choices. Andrea joins us in the podcast today from Kansas City! She is a mom of two and a pediatric oncology nurse. Andrea shares how her experience as a nurse impacted both of her very different births. After her traumatic Cesarean, Andrea knew how critically important it would be to find healing inside and out before giving birth again. Andrea sought EMDR therapy from a therapist who specialized in birth trauma. She describes her experience with EMDR, including specifics about the process itself and the exhaustion that came with it. She says that even though healing is HARD work, it made all of the difference during her second birth.Coterie Diapers - Use code VBAC20 for 20% OffNeeded Website: Code VBAC20 for 20% OffHow to VBAC: The Ultimate Prep Course for ParentsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vbac-link/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Today's word of the day is ‘unacceptable' as in the Rockies as in Colorado as in Bud Black as in Dick Monfort as in historic. The Rockies have been so bad this year that this move surprised absolutely nobody. Could they break the record for most losses all-time that was just set last year by the White Sox? This Rockies team lost 21-0 on Saturday! (15:00) The Boston Red Sox ownership group flew to Kansas City to meet with Rafael Devers. Why now? (21:45) Is anyone else as confused as I am in watching the Knicks and Celtics series? Boston hit its shots and won big. Another 20+ point lead for them but held on. (27:25) The Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets are both tired. That's what Nuggets coach David Adelman said. One of the worst first quarters you'll ever see. And the Nuggets somehow almost held on, but the Thunder got it done. Back to OKC we go tied up. (32:45) Review: Sacramento. (36:35) Astros starter Lance McCullers was emotional after his last outing after saying he received death threats for his performance. Not just him, but his children were targeted. Disgraceful. (44:20) The NBA Draft Lottery is tonight! Who will get the magic ball? Who has waved the white flag for Cooper Flagg enough? (47:00) NPPOD. (48:20) Bill Belichick and UNC is a nightmare.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
