As a creative entrepreneur, other than money, what's one thing you wish you had more of? For most of us, the answer is time. There just never seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all the things, get to passion projects, spend time with the people who matter most, or rest. And, unfortunately, time isn't a commodity that can be purchased. However, there are tools, services, and resources you can invest in (or put on your Christmas list) that will save you time and, thus, give you more time to do what you love and focus on the needle-moving tasks within your business. In case you'd love to be gifted with more time, in this episode of “Priority Pursuit,” we're discussing 11 time-saving gifts to ask for this Christmas as a creative entrepreneur! As creative entrepreneurs, we all have a lot on our plates. But, at the end of the day, we should be able to enjoy our families, friends, hobbies, and, well, life outside of work! Whether you're in a season requiring additional hours on the job or more intentional time with a loved one at home, balancing everything on your schedule can be challenging. Our new friends, Mark and Nicole Pasternack, know this struggle well. These married business owners, wedding photographers, and parents of four children weren't always in alignment when it came to work-life balance. Nicole tells us, “I was focusing on growing a family while Mark was focusing on growing a business. And, we weren't seeing how these things worked together. It felt like it was a constant competition for our time.” So, the Pasternacks asked themselves how they could support each other, get on the same page with work and family, and chase their goals together. Since then, Mark and Nicole have viewed their life as one cohesive unit—and, as Mark puts it, “Everything in our family is equally important.” Whether it's doing the dishes, filming a corporate video, enrolling the kids in fun activities, or shooting a wedding, the Pasternacks have systems in place to help their businesses and lives run smoothly (and not in competition with each other). The Pasternacks love mentoring other creatives and sharing tips on how you can make more money doing what you love, be present for your family and friends, and get your time back. In this episode of Priority Pursuit, Mark and Nicole explain how you can find work-life balance as a creative entrepreneur, serve your clients and family well, and escape the overwhelm of being in survival mode. In this episode, Mark and Nicole discuss: What “work-life balance” is, & if it actually exists How creatives can serve their clients, love their families, & get their personal time back Know who your ideal clients are, & set expectations early on. Remember that family life takes work, just like your business. Focus on what only you can do, & delegate (or automate) the rest. How someone who's overwhelmed with work, life, or both can start to find work-life balance as a creative entrepreneur Take control of your calendar. Put some of each paycheck into savings. Keep up with the dishes. (Yes, really!) You can find a more detailed version of this episode's show notes at: http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/find-work-life-balance-creative-entrepreneur/. Creative entrepreneurs often struggle to find the balance between doing what they love—what they've spent their entire lives studying and working toward—and making enough money to build the life they want. In other words, any of us aren't taught how to grow the business side of our craft, whether that's photography, art, music, writing, or another creative venture. Fabiana Claure—a concert pianist, university educator, entrepreneur, and business coach for musicians—understands this struggle firsthand. “I saw so many colleagues finish their education, but then flip from what they had pursued and studied for their entire lives because they just needed to make money,” she says. “And I didn't want that to happen to me; I knew there had to be a better way.” While she initially thought (and was taught) that someone else would have to employ her as a musician, Fabiana discovered that she didn't have to wait to earn a living from her craft. Fabiana taught herself about marketing, client services, pricing structures, and more from the lens of a creative entrepreneur. And, she started to build the life she wanted while doing what she loved: playing and making music. Fabiana turned this knowledge and experience into a first-of-its-kind music business course at the University of North Texas, then an online program for creatives called The Musician's Profit Umbrella—taking the lessons she taught her university students and making them available to the public. Since then, Fabiana has helped thousands of musicians increase their income through online programs for creative entrepreneurs. With these programs, musicians can learn how to achieve financial and artistic prosperity, win back their time, and build a legacy—all without sacrificing their quality of life. In this episode of Priority Pursuit, Fabiana explains how to make an online program for creatives so you can increase your income, raise your rates, and keep burnout at bay. In this episode, Fabiana discusses: Why creative entrepreneurs should design & sell online programs What qualifications & attitudes creative entrepreneurs need to make an online program Take action quickly to bring your vision to life. Think and communicate as a leader. Hold onto your craft and your priorities. How creative entrepreneurs should structure their pricing for online programs How creative entrepreneurs can build and sell an online program Determine who your ideal clients are. Sell your program first; then, create a curriculum. Personalize your offers by sharing your story. Confidently invite people to work with you. If you follow me on Instagram, you might already know about the puppy saga that's been going on at our house. But, in case you don't know what I'm talking about, I'll fill you in. A couple weeks ago, I was walking Hattie like I do every morning. However this particular walk threw us for an unexpected loop, because when Hattie and I got back to our block, I found a tiny, black puppy frolicing on the sidewalk and trying to eat a dandelion. With no owners in sight, I scooped him up, gave him a bath, took him to our vet to see if he was chipped (which he wasn't), and I posted his photo all over social media and lost pet websites in an attempt to find his home. I'm still in disbelief that nobody claimed this sweet boy, whom the vet said was no more than 12 weeks old when I found him. But, Zach named the pup “Little Richard,” and we've had him for almost two weeks now. Little Richard is sitting on my lap as I record this, but before this episode airs, he'll be in his forever home, which I am both so happy and so sad about. We found the most ideal home for this lab-hound pup, and we know he is going to be well loved. But, you can bet there will be tears when we drop him off with his parents in just a couple days. At this point, I'm sure you're thinking, “That's great Victoria, but what does a puppy have to do with running a small business?” And, after two weeks of having a pup and an older dog, I can promise you that your business has more in common with dogs than you likely think. In this episode, we specifically discuss: Like it isn't fair to compare a puppy who is learning to a dog who is well trained, it isn't fair for you to compare your business to someone else's that is further along than yours & allow yourself to feel less than. Like businesses, dogs are trained & raised to serve different purposes. 47. Whether you're a wedding photographer or another kind of creative entrepreneur, there are likely countless ways you can better serve your customers AND increase profits through upselling. And, in this episode of Priority Pursuit, KISS Books Founder and CEO Shaun Austin Gordon breaks down the sales strategy he teaches photographers to help them sell a wedding album to every single client (AKA a strategy for better serving customers and increasing profits through upselling). If you've listened to previous episodes of Priority Pursuit, you've heard about KISS Books—an heirloom album company for photographers based in Indianapolis, Indiana and the album company that I exclusively use for Victoria Rayburn Photography clients. But, what I haven't shared about KISS Books is the fact that Shaun's album sales system allowed me to serve all of my 2021 couples with wedding albums—which did immense things for my client experience—and allowed me to make an additional $20,000 in 2021! Because KISS Books and Shaun's album sales system have been such blessings to me, I'm thrilled to have Shaun on the show to explain how to improve your client experience and how to increase profits through upselling. Side Note: This blog post shares an abbreviated version of Shaun's album selling process—which can absolutely be adjusted for other industries, products, and services. You can hear more of Shaun's system in the audio featured at the top of the page, and you can find step-by-step instructions for implementing this system in Shaun's book, The Stack. 38. Have you ever wondered how to become an “award-winning” business owner? I mean, you work hard. You produce great work. However, while you regularly see industry peers receiving awards, nobody is knocking on your door to give you a trophy. What gives? Thankfully, in this episode of Priority Pursuit, award-winning and published wedding photographer Jasmine Norris of Jasmine Norris Photography is sharing exactly how you can become an award-winning business owner—including how you can be named to The Knot and WeddingWire's “Best of Weddings” lists if you're a wedding vendor. Just to name a few of the awards Jasmine has earned throughout her career (You can find a more extensive list here!), Jasmine is a six-time winner of WeddingWire's Couples' Choice Awards, a seven-time winner of The Knot's Best of Weddings, and a four-year Stevie Awards recipient (with multiple awards earned each year). Jasmine is an incredible photographer and business owner and is certainly deserving of these awards. However, Jasmine doesn't simply receive awards regularly. She's made applying for awards part of her workflow and uses her awards to leverage her business. And, in this episode of Priority Pursuit, she shares how you can and why you should be doing the same. Jasmine shares more in the audio of this episode, but essentially, to become an award-winning business owner, you need to: Nominate your business and apply for awards. Don't wait for others to nominate you. Research awards within your community, state, or area. Research awards within your industry. Research general awards. Set up workflows to make applying for awards simple & routine. Shaun Austin Gordon is the founder of Kiss Books, a photography album business for photographers based in the Midwest. He started out as a photographer himself and at one stage he was photographing more than 60 weddings a year, all while raising a family. He has had to work a lot on himself to get to where he is now, including attending counselling with his wife of 20 years, and is happy to share his advice and perspective with others. When he's not working, he loves to play tennis and travel. On today's show, I was so happy to spend some time with Shaun Gordon, the CEO of Kiss Books. Shaun has been on a journey of self-discovery, and he walked me through some of the milestones he met along the road. This journey began with a text from his wife, who said that she wanted to divorce him because she couldn't cope with continuing in the marriage as it was. They went to marriage counselling and Shaun was able to open up to his wife about his history of sexual abuse. He'd never been able to talk about this dark and difficult experience, and in his teens he turned to hard drugs as a way to cope and subsequently became an addict. This revelation at marriage counselling not only reshaped his relationship with his wife, but also with his parents, which Shaun and I explored in detail in the episode. I've had my own experiences of difficult relationships with my parents, and Shaun and I talked through the pain of acknowledging that our parents did the best they could with what they had. Although it can be hard to cope with the feeling that our parents let us down, we can still try to salvage the good parts of those relationships, and we can use our stories as a stepping stone to try to make things better for ourselves and for our own children. We're not perfect people, but we can try to move forward and make each generation a little more healed from trauma. Shaun and I also discussed how we can start to move forward from these difficult traumas, such as including a ‘To Be' list next to your ‘To Do' list. Shaun gives this advice to everyone, especially entrepreneurs, as it helps us to move towards the person we want to become. Listen in to find out how to write out your ‘To Be' list, how to include gratitude in your life, and how this will fill you with a new sense of achievement and purpose. 33. (Side note: Many of these are also tax-deductible business expenses. So, don't hesitate to treat yourself!) 027. If you're checking out this episode while it's still new, then it's early October. And, you're likely thinking, “Slow season? Why are we talking about slow season? We're in the midst of/we're about to approach my business's busiest time of year!” And, friend, I get it. If you're a photographer or wedding vendor, fall likely has you busy right now. Or, if you own a boutique, work in retail, or have another business where many of your sales happen during the holidays, your busy season is just beginning. That said, your busy season will come to an end, and for many businesses, a “slow season” follows the busy season. But, just because shoots, sales, etc. slow down doesn't mean you don't have things to do. In fact, slow season is the perfect time to work “on” your business instead of “in” your business so you can help your business grow and improve. To help you plan ahead, set goals, and make the most of your slow season, in this week's episode of Priority Pursuit, we're discussing eight ways you can improve your business this slow season! Create or revisit your ideal client avatar. Update your website. Create content for the next year. Create a social media calendar. Prepare publication submissions. Address any inefficiencies in your business. Improve your client experience. Invest in professional development. Happy Monday! We've got another great episode of the Business Journey Podcast for you today! We're chatting all about elevating your experience as a photographer by offering albums. Look, I swore for years I'd never offer albums. But the reality is that owning a business is a journey and sometimes on that journey… you wind up eating your words, ha! So, here we are: offering albums and loving every minute of it. Today, I want to dive into what the process looks like, our journey with albums, and how you can start adding it to your experience today! I truly believe in elevating your client experience with albums and I hope you will, too! Before we get into everything, I wanted to share something exciting! I'm hosting a FREE class with the CEO of Kiss Books TODAY!!! This is a two part series to learn ALL about how I use albums in my client experience, specifically with mini sessions!! I can't WAIT to how you how I've been able to increase my profits AND serve my clients through albums!! http://www.rebeccaricephoto.com/kiss-webinar (CLICK HERE) to join me TODAY at 2pm CST!! Select “Register to All Dates” when you join and be automatically enrolled in BOTH free classes (happening today and Thursday!)! A replay will be available and sent out shortly after the live class. Now, onto today's topic… My Journey with AlbumsFor the longest time, I said I would never offer albums for my clients. Albums are great but I was convinced that the only way to actually sell albums well was by doing in-person sales (IPS) and I did NOT have time for that. For years, that's what I believed and albums stayed off my offerings. But, recently I connected with the CEO of Kiss Books, Sean Gordon. He helped me talk through this fear of offering albums because of IPS and having time. He totally transformed the way I look at albums now! (We're talking a lot about this on our webinar on Thursday so make sure you sign up - http://www.rebeccaricephoto.com/kiss-webinar (CLICK HERE)!) When I realized I didn't have to do IPS to sell albums, everything changed. We decided to try out the offer and added to my collections and associate team. Surprise? It worked! We have clients buying albums now. They've never seen them. They aren't coming to my studio to go through them or design them. And my clients are LOVING them! Benefits of Selling AlbumsThrough offering albums to my clients, I've come to realize there's some very distinct benefits to offering albums. First, it elevates your client experience and justifies higher pricing for your sessions. It also helps set you apart. How many family photographers around you right now include albums in their collections? Now you can offer these beautiful albums! Seriously, KISS creates beautiful albums that your clients are going to love. And they're affordable for you! Even more important than that, we're creating the tradition of printed photos for our clients. Many clients don't realize how badly they want their photos printed until they're in their hands. Now, they'll have the expectation to have an album each year. What an amazing experience - and heirloom to pass down! Personally, we have young kids right now who want to look through photos all the time. Imagine being able to provide that memory to your clients! Make sure to sign up for the http://www.rebeccaricephoto.com/kiss-webinar (webinars this week) so you can be part of the rest of the conversation about albums and offering them as a photographer. I'm so excited to be jumping into this world with all of you! I hope this helps you get excited to start elevating your client experience with albums!! 012. Do you have set systems in your business? Or, are you flying by the seat of your pants and simply spending day after day trying to get as much done as you can and going to bed stressed because you “didn't get enough done”? As creative entrepreneurs, we make our own schedules, which is a beautiful thing. But, if we aren't careful, our days can turn into nothing more than putting out fires or getting distracted by whatever we're excited about at the moment. In order to serve your clients well and prioritize the things that actually move the needle in your business, you need to have systems in place to make sure that what's most important is getting done as efficiently as possible. So, in this episode of Priority Pursuit, I want to share what my post-wedding process or system looks like with you in hopes of inspiring you to create concrete systems in your own business. Now, if you aren't a photographer, please don't tune this out. While I'm using a photography example, chances are, a system can be created around every facet of your business. You just need to break it down. What is a system? Within your business, a system is simply an organized way of completing what's usually a large task, and systems are most effective when there are deadlines or time scheduled specifically for the task. 010. Anna and Ryan Leonard of Refuge Photography are crossfit buddies; sushi enthusiasts; and a destination, husband-wife photography team based in Rosemary Beach Florida. If you meet these two in person or even just follow them on the Gram, you’ll quickly fall in love with them. Between their service-centered hearts, matching PJs, and their frequent use of confetti, Ryan and Anna are essentially the epitome of “couple goals.” That said, owning and operating a business with your spouse is harder than most people realize. With this in mind, in this week’s episode of Priority Pursuit, Ryan and Anna are sharing what running a business with your spouse is actually like. Spoiler Alert: Ryan and Anna work until 2:00 am far more often than they take sunset walks on the beach. While I want to encourage you to listen to this full episode of Priority Pursuit because Ryan and Anna share countless nuggets of marriage and business wisdom in this episode that are applicable to both spouse business owners and simply married couples, you can find a summary of a few of the biggest takeaways from “Episode 010: The Good, The Hard, & The Myths About Running a Business with Your Spouse with Ryan & Anna Leonard of Refuge Photography” below! Consistent work is what leads to results. Focus on your spouse’s positives—not their negatives—& divide responsibilities based on one another’s strengths. Decide TOGETHER how hard & long you want to hustle. If you aren’t a spouse team, don’t feel like your marriage is less than. Let your shared values & mission be the driving force behind both your marriage & your business. 008. When there are countless others out there who offer the same product or service that you do, how can you stand out in the marketplace? According to Photographer’s Edit CEO, Miilu CEO, and Bokeh Podcast Host Nathan Holritz, one of the most effective ways that your business can stand out in a saturated market is by crafting a unique brand position statement and strategically including this statement on your website, on social media, and in your other marketing materials. If you’ve read Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller (which Nathan and I highly recommend that you do), you may already be familiar with this concept. However, determining your brand position can be easier said than done. I mean, it was for me anyway! Because Nathan knows how powerful brand position statements can be, in this episode of Priority Pursuit, he breaks down exactly how to define and communicate your brand position so you can stand out in your market and increase sales! In this episode, Nathan answers: What is a unique brand position, and why is it important for creative entrepreneurs to determine what their unique brand position is? What are examples of good and bad brand positions? Establish a big picture view. Look at the market & find a gap. Develop a business model around this messaging. How can you determine your brand position? On your website above the fold On social media In conversation Once you know your unique brand position, how can you practically communicate it? 007. As a creative entrepreneur, your plate is full. Between serving your clients, marketing your business, and doing all the things you have to do behind the scenes, it can be difficult to find time to sit down and think about your brand. But, friend, you need to. Because, your brand should be the basis of all of your marketing efforts and the driving force behind almost all of your business decisions and systems. With this in mind, today on Priority Pursuit, I’m excited to discuss what a brand is, why your brand matters, and how to develop and communicate your brand as a creative entrepreneur with six simple strategies. Here’s a summary of what’s discussed: What is a brand? As a creative entrepreneur, your brand is: How people perceive you, your business, your work, your services, and your products The gut feeling you, your business, your work, your services, and your products give your customers What comes to mind when people think about you, your business, your work, your services, and your products Why is it important for you to develop your brand? Taking time to define your brand is important, because according to Donald Miller, author of Building a StoryBrand, “clarity” or clear messaging is the key to both strategic marketing and making sales. And, in order to make your messaging clear, you have to determine your brand. When you take the time to define your brand, you can decide: How you want your business to be perceived in the marketplace What comes to mind when people think about your business What problems you can solve for your customers Then, when your brand is developed, you can (1) use it as a basis for all of your marketing efforts to create consistency—which is key in establishing a strong brand—and (2) clearly communicate how you can make your customers’ lives better or easier. This consistency and clarity will help you stand out and be remembered when prospective customers are looking for your products or services. Basically, in order to make sales and for your marketing efforts to be effective long term, you need to develop and then communicate your brand. Six Strategies You Can Use to Define & Communicate Your Brand as a Creative Entrepreneur Determine your brand story (I highly recommend getting a copy of Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller Establish your “why” Choose your “brand topics” Establish a specific voice Make your brand visually consistent Serve according to your band You can find a more detailed version of this episode’s show notes at: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/how-develop-communicate-brand-creative-entrepreneur/ Mentioned Links & Resources Show Notes: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/how-develop-communicate-brand-creative-entrepreneur/ Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/7-ways-to-stand-out-as-a-photographer/ How to Create a Customer Avatar with DigitalMarketer: https://www.digitalmarketer.com/blog/create-customer-avatar-youtube/ Katelyn James Bridal Guide: https://katelynjames.com/blog/the-kj-bridal-guide-2-0-wedding-magazine-template/ In Focus Marketing Summit: https://www.infocusmarketingsummit.com/ Business Coaching for Photographers: https://victoriarayburnphotography.com/business-coaching-photographers/ Join the Priority Pursuit Podcast Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/179106264013426 Receive $20 Off Your First Pair of Rothy’s: http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/rothys/ Save $50 on Your First Order from KISS Books of $100 or More: http://victoriarayburnphotography.com/kiss/ Follow Victoria on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/victorialrayburn/

Tom is a chemist by trade with a photography hobby and an interest in social sciences who first introduced me to Charles' Duhigg book, The Power of Habit. Shaun is the co-founder and Chief Visionary Officer at Kiss Books, although, if he had any other job he would be an inspirational speaker. They both chat with The Therapist in Training about habit loops, creating keystone habits and essentially beginning to change routines in order to embrace the life you always dreamed of having.

Shaun is the co-founder of Kiss Books. Having been a photographer for 15years, photographing over 500 weddings, he has a lot of insight into what it takes to run a successful photography business. Out of that, he started Kiss Books, a high end album company to help serve his fellow photographers. In this interview, Shaun shares advice on how to sell and upsell by casting a vision and setting expectations. Below is the transcript of the interview with timestamps: Braedon Flynn: 00:00 Welcome to the photo report where we have conversations with top level photographers and other people that create for a living to hear stories about how they do what they do, how they've done, what they've done, struggles along the way in a way that hopefully inspires, encourages and gets you to go out there and create more work. And this episode was with Shaun Gordon who is one of the founders of kiss books, which is a high end album company and we hear the story about how he goes from being a photographer to launching this company, which is now a significantly sized company. And we talk a lot about being, you know, when you're in business, you have product and you're. And as a photographer you are a service. You're basically selling your time for dollars. And so we have a conversation about how do you take the things that you're already doing and then make more money through sales and doing it in a way that's just really great. Braedon Flynn: 00:44 So we actually recorded this live and so if you want to watch the video, you can go to the photo report dot Com. And see it there, or search youtube for the artist report and then type in his books. I'm sure it'll show up that way, but I hope you love this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it. Before we get into the show, want to tell you real quick about our sponsor film supply club. If you shoot film or you're interested in film, I love film. It is the best place to get it at the best prices than an amazing community of some of the top photographers in our industry. You can check it out at film supply.club/join now onto the show. Thanks. Thompson being here and after getting into that, can you just give a little intro on the sort of how you got to where you are to give people that don't know you a little bit idea? Shaun Gordon: 01:30 Sure. Yeah. I was a photographer for about 15 years, a shot around 500 weddings. I'm mostly based out of Orange County and up traveling to 10 for, for that and I'm just saw this gap in the industry and cofounded kiss books because of this space that was like I loved, I, you know, she didn't over 60 weddings a year for a few years, which is kind of crazy. But the amount of albums that I was selling, it just became such a bottleneck in my business and it was basically at a point where it was like, it has to be easier than this at some point. And so having chosen the album makers that were in the history at the time, we kind of made our version of kiss and then decided like this is something I think that we can do on our own. Shaun Gordon: 02:17 And created a system, a very simple way to get to the product and we launched kiss about 11 years ago now. So her dad and what like with, with that though. Braedon Flynn: 02:30 So how did you transition from photography to then launching a thing to them becoming a thing where now you are just doing that? Shaun Gordon: 02:38 Yeah, I love creative entrepreneurs and having been one for a long time, I was raised by an entrepreneur that knew the business side of things, so that was one thing that I loved and learned from my dad and um, understood what it meant to hustle, you know, shooting that amount of weddings and things like that made sense during that season. But also knowing that like I loved entrepreneurs as a whole and how could we create a space where we can all thrive together. I saw a lot of friends kind of like come in the industry and go out of the industry because of the business side. Today's episode features founder and CEO Shaun Gordon of Kiss Books, an heirloom album company for professional photographers. I've had the chance to get to know Shaun over the last few years through a year-long leadership program we both participated in, and more recently as we designed and built Kiss's new brand and website. Shaun's the kind of guy that's reflective and finds opportunities to invest in himself and his relationships—all of that is on display in this episode. We chat about why him and his partner decided to build Kiss Books. But not before exploring his beginnings as a photographer and—an experience I wasn't aware of—owner of a brick-and-mortar photography equipment store. It was through his experience of shooting hundreds of sessions a year that he came to realize the need for an album company that was simple.
