In this Leveling Up episode of the PRS Global Open Deep Cuts Podcast, Dr. Mulay discusses his path into plastic surgery,  the differences between general surgeons and plastic surgeons in India, the differences between the healthcare system n Chang Gung and in India, how he has arranged the logistics of his solo microsurgery practice to have consistent results, the importance of a good surgical assistant, how cost pressures affect his surgical technique, his choice of workhorse flaps, what he learned about dissecting an ALT flap from Dr. Geoffrey Hallock, why he has changed his approach to dissecting the free fibula flap multiple times over the course of his career, why he freehands all his osteotomies and flap design and does not use virtual surgical planning, why surgical speed is overrated, the benefits of loupe microsurgery, the importance of taking breaks, and why “it looks OK” is never OK to say. Dr. Amit Mulay is a reconstructive microsurgeon from the city of Pune in India. He completed his initial medical education in Government Medical College in Kolhapur, followed by general surgery training at KEM Hospital in Pune. After a couple of years as a junior consultant in oncologic surgery in Pune, he trained in plastic surgery at Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi. He then spent 3 months as a visiting observer at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, learning the nuances of perforator flaps. He has been running a very busy solo microsurgery practice serving Pune and its outlying suburbs for the last 8 years, covering multiple community hospitals and performing 2-3 free flap reconstructions per week. Your host, Dr. Puru Nagarkar, is a board-certified plastic and hand surgeon, and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.  #PRSGlobalOpen #DeepCutsPodcast #PlasticSurgery #LevelingUp

After catching a night bus 9 hours south of Mumbai, we had just one day to discover as much as we could about Alun's Polish Grandparents, who lived in Valivade during the 1940s. We struck gold before breakfast, managing to meet the local Governor, who happily escorted us around the village and nearby city of Kolhapur, ensuring the trip exceeded our wildest dreams! The Polish refugee camp in Valivade was the largest camp for Polish refugees in India. From 1942-1948, around 5,000 Poles lived there, mainly women and children. The Varad Vinayak temple located at Mahad in Kolhapur district is considered to be the fourth of the Ashtavinayaks. Varad Vinayak is the form of Ganesha who fulfills the wishes of devotees and whose fasting according to the rules fulfills all the wishes. Varad Vinayak Chaturthi or Vainayaki Chaturthi fasting is observed at midday on the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha every month. According to mythological legends, the prince of Kaundinya kingdom, Rukmanagad once reached the hermitage of sage Vachkanavi to rest while hunting in the forest. Seeing the beauty of Rukmanagad, the sage's wife Mukunda fell in love with him and expressed her desire to have physical relations with the prince. But the virtuous Rukmanagad, considering this to be inappropriate, refused the advances. Indra Dev, who was passing by at that time, saw Mukunda saddened by this. Devraj Indra's feelings towards her aroused and he came disguised as Rukmanagad and formed a relationship with Mukunda. After a few days, Mukunda gave birth to a son named Gritasambad. After growing up, when Gritsambad came to know that he was an illegitimate child, his heart shrinked with grief and left the ashram cursing his mother. He started wandering in the forest day and night, condemning his fate. When he got tired, Gritsambad started praising Bhagwan Ganesha to calm his mind. Pleased with his devotion, Bhagwan Ganesha appeared to him and gave peace to his tormented heart. Accepting the prayer of Gritsambad, Bhagwan Ganesha established himself in the form of Varad Vinayak at the same place.     Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

He was also the first to introduce reservation for backward classes, as early as the 1900s. He was also a patron of artists and sportspersons, especially wrestling. The next point of interest are some museums starting off with Townhall, which has a variety of artefacts including some found from the 1st century CE on the banks of the Panchaganga river. Kolhapur has a significant contribution to the Maharashtra film industry and there are a number of museums dedicated to this and personalities from the field. This includes Chandrakant Mandare museum and Bhalji Pendharkar museum. Finally a unique lifestyle museum is the Kanheri Mutt museum that depicts life in a village 200 years ago. We then come to the most important part of the journey - food and shopping! Food of the region include Kolhapuri Misal, Mutton and chicken tamda rasa (mutton and chicken curry), kolhapuri bhel. Another unique offering of Kolhapur is the Doodh katta - a place where milk from the buffalo is provided as a nutritional drink. From a shopping perspective there are several options beyond the very popular kolhapuri chappal or jutis which have their own unique style (and a sound when you walk) along with the kolhapuri petha or headgear, kolhapuri saaj or jewellery. FInally, a couple of other options close to Kolhapur include the iconic Panhala fort, the beautiful temples of Adinath Jain temple and Kopeshwar temple and the beautiful water bodies of Kolhapur including Panchaganga river and its ghats, and of course the popular Rankala lake to cap off the journey! Mobility into Power of the Dalit-Women Sarpanchs and a Comparison with the Upper Caste- Male Sarpanchs in Maharashtra: A Story of Two Extremes on the Spectrum.

Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Dhanmanjiri Sathe, Azeem Premji University, Bangalore In tune with the 73rd Constitutional Amendment, Maharashtra passed its own local governance law in 1993 which put in place local, elected governing bodies in the rural areas called the gram panchayats. Under this, 27 per cent of the gram panchayat seats and the posts of sarpanch (i.e. the head of the gram panchayat) were to be reserved for the SCs and STs; and 33 per cent for women. Later in 2011, the share of women was increased to 50 per cent. This Amendment was made with the idea of including the hence-forth marginalized sections in the grass-root level decision-making practises. The objective was also to bring about first a presence and then preferably upward mobility, of the hence-forth disregarded sections in the political spaces and processes. In this paper we try to explore to what extent this has happened? To that end, in this paper, we compare the dalit-women (D-W) sarpanchs, who undoubtedly belong to the lowest rung of India's society with the upper caste- male (U-M) sarpanchs who belong to the upper-most end of the Indian society. After surveying 26 D-W sarpanchs with the same number of U-M sarpanchs, in the Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra, we arrive at the following results. On the whole, we find that while becoming a sarpanch does give the D-W a certain kind of upward mobility, this mobility seems to be somewhat constrained. We find that the U-M sarpanch is significantly better off as compared to D-W sarpanchs with respect to material assets (like land, other assets like TV, vehicles etc); and with respect to non-material assets (like education, who operates the bank account). Also, in the context of discrimination, the D-W sarpanchs have to face much more discrimination (like being called by first name in a derogatory manner, not allowed to sit on the sarpanch chair). The U-M sarpanchs are much better politically connected as compared to the D-W sarpanch. Interestingly, we find that effective participation as a sarpanch is better in case of U-M sarpanchs than in case of D-W sarpanchs. A further delving into the significant factors explaining this are the discrimination faced by D-W sarpanchs, higher ownership of non-material assets by the U-M sarpanch and then the higher assets ownership of material assets by the U-M sarpanchs (in the given order). Thus, we find that daily discrimination i.e. insults, humiliations that the D-W sarpanchs face play an important role in their less effectiveness as a sarpanch. We have preliminary evidence that shows that the ‘environment' in which a dalit-woman sarpanch is working has an important negative bearing on her performance. This arguably limits her political mobility also and therefore there is a need to improve her working environment.

Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Kishore More - University of Mumbai The Lingayat - Virasaiva sect of the Medieval Deccan played a prominent role in the critique of Caste through Hagiography and Vachana literature (Sharana/Vachana Sahitya). Modern day Karnataka was the centre of the Lingayat mobilization in its early phase as well as major Marathi publications of Lingayat community which were covering Lingayat-Virasaiva intersectionality in colonial Maharashtra also. Community migration from Karnataka to Maharashtra created social capital in the form of educational institutes, Lingayat boarding, Marathi publications and journals. Lingayats from Solapur, Latur, and Kolhapur stayed connected with Karnataka because of their bilingual nature and ideological roots which helps modern day mobilization for the demand of minority religious status. Lingayat and Virasaiva words were synonymous in the pre-modern period and belonged to the same groups, after the caste census sharpened caste identity, and major community publications adopted different names which emphasised religious identity. This paper will take cognizance of circulation of religious ideas through migration and community networks created by migrant merchants like Mallappa Warad from Solapur and many others from other districts. It will examine early debates on the construction of Lingayat –Virasaiva identity through the Lingayat Marathi literature, books, journals and series of books like from ‘Virasaiva Lingi-Bhrahmin Granthmala' to ‘Lingayat Granthavali', ‘Virashaivamatodhhraka Shri. Basaveshwar' to ‘Shri Basaveshwar' and social political mobilization through ‘All India Virashaiva Mahasabha'(1904) to ‘Lingayat Ekta Sangh'(1941).

There seems to be no breather in sight for consumers, who are already facing the brunt of costly food and other household items. An RBI survey showed that households can expect inflation to rise further in the near and medium-term. On the other hand, wholesale prices surged to more than a decade high in November. Is it a cause of concern at macro level? Even as record-high wholesale inflation led to some anxiety in India, a news from distant France elevated everyone's mood here. Close on the heels of Parag Agrawal's elevation as CEO of Twitter, another India-born executive has now been chosen to head a global brand, Chanel. But there are few things which set Leena Nair apart from the other NRI achievers. Our next report explains how Nair is different and offers a peek into her long journey from Kolhapur to London.   From the change of guard in Chanel, let us see how the new coronavirus variant is putting policy makers across the globe in a fix. The sharp rise in inflation and the emergence of Omicron has complicated the picture for global central banks. Be it the US Fed or the ECB, each policy maker is looking to buy time to decide on all the details of adjusting their non-conventional policy tools. Let's look at the policy dilemma of different global banks and how investors are reading the developments, in our next report. Unlike the global policy makers, the market regulator in India does not seem to be in a fix when it comes to reforms. The Securities and Exchange Board of India recently proposed an overhaul of sorts of listing norms to bring in more transparency. One of the major changes that the market regulator suggested was to cap the amount companies, mainly start-ups, can raise under general corporate purpose or GCP. So what exactly is GCP and what do companies do with the amount raised under it? Find out all in this episode of the podcast.    Watch video

These deities have been designed, constructed and consecrated according to prescribed “shastras” (Science treaties/technology).  Dating back to ancient times (per legends), they are treated as live/powerful energy beings. Many public and secret rituals are followed on a daily basis to maintain the powerful energy form. The temples around them have been built and rebuilt, due to natural wear and tear, repeated invasions etc, but the consecration remains.  Everyone has access to their powerful energies, but the “sadhaka” (the seeker) needs to prepare oneself to be able to receive. It's like radio or TV transmissions. You need the dial/antenna to be tuned to the frequency they are broadcasting.I am including links and live streams from temples of these various deities, that I mentioned during our chat and also some photos. "Data and facts which have been collected by the Gaikwad Commission ...indicate that Marathas are neither socially nor educationally backward" That was just one of the views expressed by a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court on 5 May when it struck down the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act of 2018, also known as SEBC, which extended reservations to the Maratha community in public education and employment in excess of the ceiling limit of 50% fixed by the apex court. The Devendra Fadnavis government in 2018 had approved a 16% reservation for Marathas in jobs and education after statewide protests...that ended up increasing the 50% cap on reservation that was set by the Supreme Court, that's how the matter landed up there. The Maratha community which constitutes 32 percent of the Maharashtra's population has historically been a socially and politically dominant class with 12 of the 18 Chief Ministers of the state coming from the community, and over 60% of all the members of Legislative Assemblies of Maharashtra have been Marathas since 1962.Which prompts the question, why is this community seeking reservation in the first place? The Supreme Court's quashing of the Maratha reservation quota, also casts a shadow on the Uddhav Thackeray administration, since the Maratha community vote swung the votes for the NCP party in the 2019 Assembly Elections. Not just that, the Supreme Court also may have led itself to muddled waters as it not only challenged past rulings on the excess reservation but whether it has the power to set any limit on reservations in India? To unpack all of these issues, for today's episode, I spoke with Member of Parliament Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje, who is one of the leaders for the demand of Maratha reservation, and with Smruti Koppikar, a Mumbai-based senior journalist and columnist.Host and Producer: Himmat Shaligram Guest: Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje, Member of Parliament from Kolhapur and Smruti Koppikar, Mumbai-based senior journalist and columnist. The Essential Sai Satcharita
Chapter 11 - Historical Commentary

The Essential Sai Satcharita

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2020 13:04

Chapter 11 is a powerful chapter. It is so important that many devotees read it every day. Some of them have learnt it by heart and recite it daily, or in times of need, or during a crisis in their lives. Chapter 11 is called the Rudra Adhyaya. Rudra is the 11th Avatar of Lord Shiva. The power and glory of Rudra is written in the Shastras. Rudra literally means Rudan, or to cry, as it indicates destruction. This destruction is annihilation of illusion and Maya. Hence, we cry as we cling to materialistic and worldly things, and then we weep when we lose them. Dabholkar has given three extraordinary Leelas in this chapter. The first is Dr. Pandit's ritualistic worship of Baba. Baba gladly allows Dr. Pandit to perform Pooja for Him without flying into a rage, as Dr. Pandit is simple-hearted and sees no difference between the Kafni-clad Baba and his Brahmin Guru. The second Leela is about Haji Durvesh Siddique Falke, who yearns to be included in Baba's Darbar. However, Baba banishes him to stay in the north-facing Chavadi for nine long months, without paying any heed to him. Then, in desperation, he seeks Shama's help and intervention, and finally is allowed to enter Baba's Dwarka Mai, and he is ultimately accepted in Baba's Darbar. Lastly, Baba's control over the elements, the terrible storm and the raging Dhuni Mai. Baba, the creator of this Universe, had total control over the Panch Maha Bhootas, so he could calm them down, and also calm the raging Dhuni Mai, the terrible storm, torrential rain and gusty winds. Now a little history about Dr. Pandit and Siddique Falke Raghunath of Dhopeshwar, alias Kaka Puranik. This Maha Satpurush was Baba's contemporary, the date 1821 to 1910. He was from Rajapur Zilla in Ratnagiri District. Tatya Saheb and Dr. Noolkar were devoted to him. Very little information is available on this saint. However, he and Baba worked in unison for the welfare of the devotees. Dr. Jagannath Pandit Dr. Pandit was related to Tatya Saheb Noolkar from his mother's side. He was devoted to Kaka Puranik. In the Sai Satcharita, Chapter 11, the story of Dr. Pandit is beautifully described, where he offers Guru Pooja to Baba by marking his forehead with a Tripundra of sandalwood paste, as he offered this Pooja daily to his Guru, Kaka Puranik. Dr. Pandit was devout and innocent. His actions conveyed the highest truth that there is no difference between his Brahmin Guru and the Kafni-clad Sai Baba. Baba, perceiving his clear conscience, was quite pleased, instead of flying into a rage. Dr. Pandit hailed from Kolhapur, Ratnagiri District, and was a medical doctor. He studied in a medical college in Calcutta. His descendants are living in Pune. The Tripundra is symbolic of the Gunas – Raja, Tamas, Sattva, which this Universe is made of. When Dr. Pandit drew the Tripundra on his Guru's forehead, he believed that his Guru could destroy these Gunas. Befittingly, he drew the Tripundra on ‘Triputi Nashak' Baba, who could easily destroy these Gunas in all His devotees. This information was provided by Noolkar's descendants. Hazrat Durvesh Haji Mohammed Siddique Falke In the 11th chapter of the Sai Satcharita, the incident of Baba's wrath on Siddique Falke is given - how Baba put forth three questions to him, and the wonderful answers that Siddique Falke gave. Durvesh Haji Mohammed Siddique Falke was born in Kalyan around 1841. He was an affluent Zamindar, and owned vast acres of farmland. He was sophisticated, intelligent, well read and spiritual. He had travelled widely. Baghdad, Constantinople and Makkah were some of the places that he had visited. Dada Saheb Khaparde has recorded on one of his visits to Shirdi, dated 14-12-1911, in his ‘Shirdi Diary'. Dada Saheb Khaparde, who was himself extremely learned and spiritual, states in his diary that Siddique Falke was a gentleman of the old sort, i.e., a Karma-Margi, and very intelligent. He was spiritually developed and learned. The conversations, that they had, were pleasant and instructive. Baba liked Falke a great deal, and is said to have granted his wish. Siddique Falke was married to Kursheed and had two sons, Ghulam Mustafa and Muhammad Mukram. Falke loved to wear spotless white clothes. Whenever the Dwarka Mai was washed with cow dung, Baba would summon Falke and make him sit on the wet floor, much to Falke's discontent. But, when he got up, his clothes remained spotlessly white as before. Baba loved and had a great deal of respect for Falke, and whenever permission was granted for his departure, Baba would walk the hundred paces with him and see him off at the breach in the wall. Falke lived in a huge building in Kalyan called Falke Wada, and it is still there even today. In chapter 11, the story of Falke's attempt to obtain Baba's grace is given. Falke stays for nine months in the north-facing Chavadi, trying in vain to enter the sanctum sanctorum. Then, he seeks Shama's help, and finally, Baba relents. Baba...

Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/nascent_carbon/ Horror wears many faces. But perhaps the most chilling of them all is the mask of ordinariness. When cruelty comes calling dressed in the robes of banality, its power to inflict pain and cause fear is enhanced. There is nothing striking about either Seema Mohan Gavit or her sister Renuka Shinde to set them apart. Here are two sisters who could have been just another face in the crowd, but their horrific past has shaped their present and left a noose-shaped question mark looming over their future. As the Pune-based human rights lawyer Aseem Saroday says, “Their ordinariness makes their actions even more horrifying.” On August 31, 2006, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence on Seema and her sister Renuka for killing five children, mostly toddlers in Pune, Kolhapur, and Nashik during 1990 and 1996. Ujjwal Nikam, special public prosecutor, who sought death penalty for them recalls a chilling fact. “We limited the period of killing to six years. However, this had been going on for longer than that. The women could not remember how many children they had killed.” Seema, Renuka, their mother Anjanbai, and Renuka's husband Kiran Shinde were petty thieves, who kidnapped children to be used as a cover for their activities. It started in 1990 when Renuka was caught pickpocketing at the Chatursinghi temple in Pune. Her son, Ashish, from her first marriage was with her. Renuka used him as her defence, convincing the crowd that a woman with a child couldn't possibly be a thief. On realising that a child could save them from tricky situations, the gang began kidnapping children to be used as a front. And the children would be killed if they became a problem. The mother and daughters were already charged with petty crimes when they started their killing spree. Seema's father was a truck driver. Anjanabai's second husband, Mohan, who was Renuka's father, abandoned them and moved in with another woman. He had two daughters from his second marriage; Anjanabai and her daughters started their killing spree with Mohan's elder daughter. Temple compounds, railway stations, fairs, bus stations… any crowded place was a hunting ground for them. And Kiran Shinde drove the getaway car, a Fiat. Most of the kidnapped children belonged to poor families. “Maybe, the parents tried to file a complaint and were turned away. Maybe, they were unable to do so. The kidnapping reports did not start coming in till very late,” recalls Nikam. The first kidnapping victim was a beggar woman's one-year-old son, Santosh. They used him as a distraction. If one of them was caught pickpocketing, the other woman carrying the child would fling him to the floor. Hurt, the child would start crying and it would create a commotion and distract the crowd. Later the child would be ruthlessly killed if it became a nuisance or a burden. “Santosh was hurt when he was hurled to the floor. Denied medication, the baby's wounds festered and he was crying uncontrollably. Anjanabai shut him up by bashing his head repeatedly against an iron rod,” says an investigating officer. The sisters watched their mother's gruesome act while munching on vada pav.
