Working together across party lines is anathema to much of political Washington, but Margaret Spellings says doing so is the only way to create solutions that last. A nationally recognized leader in public policy, Spellings serves as President and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center. Previously, Spellings was President and CEO of Texas 2036, president of University of North Carolina System and president of the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas after she served as U.S. Secretary of Education. As secretary, she led the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act, a bipartisan initiative to provide greater accountability for the education of 50 million U.S. public school students. She also launched the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, a plan to address challenges of access, affordability, quality and accountability in our nation's colleges and universities. Before serving as secretary, Spellings was a White House domestic policy advisor, overseeing the agenda on education, transportation, health, justice, housing and labor. Blog post A Question -- Email From a Listener: But I was prompted to think about this recently when I received an email from a podcast listener: "So I heard an interesting distinction between Gemba and Genba today. The M version is a place of work The N version is a place of investigation (used by Japanese police). So you go to the place of work before you go to the place of investigation." Hmmm. I had never heard that. So I thought I'd do a little research and check with friends who have varying levels of Japanese language skills. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lean-blog-audio/support

She co-founded Beyond The Billion, a global consortium of over 100 venture funds and investors committed to investing over $1 billion in women-founded companies. Sarah's extensive experience includes corporate venture capital within a $13 billion conglomerate, cross-border investments, and leadership roles in organizations like 131 & Counting and Lean In Malaysia, where she accelerates women into leadership roles and promotes women's participation in politics. In our conversation today, we delve into Sarah's remarkable journey, which began at the age of nine when she became a national TV host, setting the stage for an inspiring life trajectory. Her innate ability to rise to the occasion is evident as she opens up about her father's passing, a pivotal moment that led her to step into the family business at the tender age of 21 while navigating the depths of grief. Sarah draws inspiration from her emotions and grief, channeling them into her career. She also shares how she accidentally became a feminist, ultimately sparking her deep passion to see a rise in women in leadership roles. Sarah highlights how two recurring themes, venture capital and women in leadership, spurred the founding of the Beyond the Billion fund. This week on The Exit: Sarah's path to entrepreneurship has been one of many twists and turns, eventually leading her to co-found an investment fund with the goal of putting $1 Billion in the hands of female founders. At the age of nine, Sarah was working as a TV host in Malaysia where she learnt the value of earning a salary, self-promotion and an enterprise mentality. She took these skills with her through life, and after college, planned to become a M&A lawyer. But during an internship at a legal firm in Chicago, Sarah found herself gravitating towards the entrepreneurs she was working with to plan their exit strategies, rather than the legal work behind the deals. After exploring different opportunities and industries, Sarah found herself working in venture capital. It was here that Sarah saw the gender disparity in corporate leadership, so she decided to do something about it. Beyond The Billion was founded and today, Sarah has achieved the goal of putting $1 Billion dollars in the hands of female founders and business owners, including Canva and Everly Health, with no plans of slowing down. Listen to learn more about Sarah's journey, and the advice she has for founders looking for funding. Based in Washington DC, investor & entrepreneur Sarah Chen-Spellings is Co-Founder of Beyond The Billion® (launched as The Billion Dollar Fund for Women®), the world's first and largest global consortium of investors that have pledged to invest and are actively deploying beyond $1Bn towards women-founded companies. Sarah Chen-Spellings had the rare opportunity to know what it was like to be a success from a young age. By 9, she was already a TV host in Malaysia, and by 25, she was wise beyond her years and already making millions. After her father died, she was called to manage the family business and quickly learned the art of grit, resilience, and the power of business from this experience. However, before her father died, he encouraged her to work in the corporate world. Through that experience, she learned to turn her convictions into her work and believes that having a strong community and positive mentors are important for success. She likes to help other women and people of color move up the ladder and create opportunities for them to be a part of upper management that was once not possible. Even with all of her successes, Sarah can still feel like she's failing sometimes. She honestly shares why and how she focuses on what's possible to overcome these feelings. She also shares how she evaluates risks, manages her time, and puts family first. Referring to herself as an activated accidental feminist, “Go big or go home” is a motto for Sarah, and we learn how true that's been for her life in this podcast. Mary Lowe is the cofounder of Families Engaged. Mary and I attended an event in September hosted by the Women of St. Michael called “BRIDGING THE DIVIDE: A 5-part lecture series addressing structural divides in America.”She and I gave a play-by-play of the details of the event. The live recording is on Facebook. Learn about the nuances of failed reforms championed by former US Education Secretary Margaret Spellings and her interview with Commit founder Todd Williams. Spellings was appointed by George W. Bush. Williams was chosen to be the education advisor of former Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings and was appointed to four boards and commissions under Governor Greg Abbott. These two controversial education reformers have had enormous influence on public education policy over the last decade. How's it working for us? Todd Williams said, “Data gives a voice to a child.” Mary and I believe parents and teachers give a voice to a child.Spellings is on the board of Amplify Education where they were awarded a $50 million contract with the Texas Education Agency. Outcomes-based education is not the answer to public education. The best solution is to return to time-tested reading strategies and a classical education rooted in academic knowledge. Data-driven reforms reduce students and teachers to datapoints while edtech vendors and venture capitalists get rich. Welcome back Dude Spellings! As an authority on all matters related to diet, exercise, biohacking, and pursuing optimal health, Dude brings many valuable insights and expertise to the table during this show, along with the added benefit of being a fellow 50+ year old. We discuss the importance of learning how to progress at a steady and comfortable pace and the many benefits that come from letting go of the ‘no pain, no gain' mentality that has been drilled into us, and Dude reveals the methods he uses to create a home environment that sets him up for success. We also talk about how not everyone is able to fast in a productive way (and why), and Dude also reveals what made him become a true believer in micro workouts and their effectiveness. TIMESTAMPS: We talk about how to prevent injuries and continue to progress at a steady and patient and comfortable pace for years and years, even as you advance into the higher age groups. [01:28] Is it possible to overdo this micro workout concept to where it's compromising your formal workout preparation or fitness goals? [06:55] Dude did a single leg deadlift to heal the hamstring problem. [10:46] Micro workouts are really effective. They have improved his golf driving distance. [13:22] Unfortunately, we who are in the older age group, are enthusiastic for our exercise, and don't feel the aches and pains until later. [16:17] People that are starting to get back to training after not being involved, need to be careful about dropping right into a high intensity level training. [19:16] Doing anything you can to avoid injury, it is going to pay off. [22:52] By easing up on the weight that you want to lift, you are able to do them more frequently. [27:33] How does a person figure out how many days or times to have a workout experience, assuming we have the freedom and flexibility to do whatever is optimal? [30:07] Hiking is an extremely good way to stay in shape. [36:22] The more fat you burn during your lifetime, the longer you'll live. [39:05] If you have a chest freezer, you need to keep it clean and sanitized. Here's how. [40:21] Dude did the epic achievement of doing the Rim to Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon on very few calories because he thought it would improve his recovery. [43:58] It's a big breakthrough to get past the cultural traditions of eating when you are not really hungry. [55:56] If you are doing something that's highly glycolytic, it is intense. It is burning up a lot of sugar. Kali shows up with severed heads or as a goddess of wealth and . . . ahem . . . even viruses (yep, that last part is real), while Shiva hangs out in cremation grounds, covered in ash and counts the ghosts and demons as his friends. Shew! We resonate deeply with these two powerful, nonjudgmental forces, and we're certain you will too. Sit with Shiva, come dance with Kali . . . if you dare! PS. Spellings of certain words and places mentioned by Amit .... see the longer list below for his VERY generous links and explanations for the deeply curious. PPS. Somehow "yoni stones" came up. These deities have been designed, constructed and consecrated according to prescribed “shastras” (Science treaties/technology). Dating back to ancient times (per legends), they are treated as live/powerful energy beings. Many public and secret rituals are followed on a daily basis to maintain the powerful energy form. The temples around them have been built and rebuilt, due to natural wear and tear, repeated invasions etc, but the consecration remains. Everyone has access to their powerful energies, but the “sadhaka” (the seeker) needs to prepare oneself to be able to receive. It's like radio or TV transmissions. You need the dial/antenna to be tuned to the frequency they are broadcasting.I am including links and live streams from temples of these various deities, that I mentioned during our chat and also some photos. For more information on the deities and temples, my recommendation is to use the temple's own website rather than Wikipedia. Systems in these temples are still catching up to technology so their websites may not work optimally or there may be other issues. I am also attaching popular depiction for each of the deity in links: Kali as “MahaLakshmi”, deity of wealth and prosperity, located in a city called Kolhapur, in the western part of India.Following the website to the temple and a live stream from her temple: https://www.mahalaxmikolhapur.com/ https://www.mahalaxmikolhapur.com/shri-ambabai-mahalaxmi-live-darshan.php Kali as “Saptashrungi”, as a deity with 8 hands who defeated the buffalo headed demon Mahishasur. The One, The Only, Randy Spelling steps Behind The Rope. Yes THAT Randy Spelling. Before we get to his current “Randy Spelling Coaching” Business, let us start at the beginning. Spelling Manor. Randy is kind enough to entertain all of our questions about what it was like to grow up at Spelling Manor. Spelling Manor, the house with its own Wikipedia page. We discuss Mom Candy Spelling’s glamorous parties, the infamous gift wrapping room, the whose who of Hollywood who flowed through there, and how Randy felt when the Manor was sold in 2011. We discuss what it was like to grow up with Aaron Spelling as a Dad and what the legacy of such shows like “ Melrose Place”, “Charmed”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Dynasty”, “The Love Boat” and “Heart to Heart” means to him. We also discuss what is was like to be a high school student at the same time that 90210 exploded. Well there was that one time Randy went to school to everyone chanting “Donna Martin Graduates”, the night after a certain episode aired. Speaking of 90210, we discuss it all and by all, we mean, Shannen, Jason, Brian, Ian, Gabrielle, Jenni and Tori. Speaking of Tori, we discuss her own career both on 90210 as well as the plethora of reality TV she has done, such as Tori & Dean and True Tori and what it is like for Randy to watch some of these shows. Randy also opens up about what it was like to be caught in the middle of certain family dramas and it what it was like to have those played out in the media. On a larger note, we discuss topics such as the importance and value society improperly places on having versus not having money, the addiction of fame, why the media is so obsessed with “The Spellings” and some of the biggest misconceptions about himself, Tori and the rest of the family. Fear not, all of this has helped Randy get to where he is today, a devoted Husband and Dad living in Oregon with a successful life coaching business. No really, you can book him as a life coach, and if this sit down is any indication, sign us up!!!@randyspelling@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope (10% Off First Month - Use Code "velvet rope")Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Here is your fun fact for the day – Napoleon actually broke the Rosetta Stone. Go figure. In a way, it’s a great metaphor. The Rosetta Stone has been an incredible tool for translating multiple languages in the centuries since its discovery, proving itself a valuable aid in helping put back the pieces of many languages that tend to get broken and lost over time. The value though is not merely in being able to translate ancient languages, it’s in all the history that comes with being able to read ancient texts for the first time. Suddenly a whole perspective on historical events opens up, or knowledge of things we could never have known about otherwise is unlocked. Putting an ancient language back together doesn’t just open up words, it opens up literal worlds. Now, the geniuses over at MIT have come up with another tool that we can use to unlock a few more. A new system has been developed by the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) that can actually decipher lost languages. Best of all, it doesn’t need extensive knowledge of how it compares with already known languages to crack the code. The program can actually figure out on its own how different languages relate to one another. So, how does that wizardry work? One of the chief insights that make CSAIL’s program possible is the recognition of certain patterns. One of these is that languages only develop in certain ways. Spellings can change in some ways, but not others due to how different certain letters sound. Based on this and other insights, it was possible to develop an algorithm that can pick out a variety of correlations. Of course, such a thing has to be tested before it can be trusted. If you don’t test your language detector, you get bad languages. That’s probably how the whole “Aztecs said the end of the world would be in 2012” thing started. One intern with a bad translator program took it from, “And then I decided I could stop chiseling the years now. I’m a few centuries ahead,” to “the earth will stop completely rotating in 2012”. Fortunately, the researchers at MIT were a bit brighter than that. They took their program and tested it against several known languages, correctly pointing out the relationships between them and putting them in the proper language families. They are also looking to supplement their work with historical context to help determine the meaning of completely unfamiliar words, similar to what most people do when they come across a word they don’t know. They look at the entire sentence and try to figure out the meaning from the surrounding context. Led by Professor Regina Barzilay, the CSAIL team has developed an incredibly useful tool to help us understand not just the events of times gone by, but the way people thought back then. By better understanding the languages of the past, we can learn why people did what they did. We could gain valuable insight into cultures long dead to us. That knowledge will in turn help us to better understand our past and how we got to where we are. It gets us more information, information straight from the source, or at least closer to it. If TARTLE likes anything in the world, it’s getting information straight from the source. After all, that’s what we preach day in and day out around here. Getting our information from the source, minimizing false assumptions and bias when it comes to analyzing information. It’s great to see that same spirit at work in one of the world’s premier research centers and to see it being applied to our past. What’s your data worth? www.tartle.co

Hey monkiis, My guest today is the Wildman from Austin, Dude Spellings (@dudespellings). Dude not only has a rad name, but is a Primal Health Coach, Ultra Endurance Athlete, and health/wellness/fitness enthusiast. It's all about living a healthy, balanced life which lines up well with the #monkiimindset. I first heard Dude on the Primal Blueprint Podcast talk about his no-joke Microworkouts where he was accumulating up to 350 Pushups, 100 Pullups, 50 Jump Squats, 50 Deadlifts, and a 4-mile run throughout the course of the day. WHOA! It's important to note that he definitely ramped up to this volume in addition to the method in which he is spreading out the volume. He does NOT do everything at once but instead spreads the work over several hours where he is recovered between each 'set' and thus can do a huge amount a volume without it being overly exhaustive. From my time working in the Wild I find that this strategy seems to line up much more congruently with a primal model of movement vs. the 1-hour Bootcamp or class at the gym. It's not to say that these 1-hour sessions are not useful. Rather, it's important to think in a more nuanced way about training vs. movement and how you can get extreme health and performance benefits without breaking down your body. It's all about balance. Show notes: Dude's WebsiteDminder App If you have questions, please send a note to info@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram we can get more monkii Q&A sessions going. Host Brad Kearns welcomes popular guest Dude Spellings from his base in the cool headquarters of the world, Austin, TX. Dude has used the quarantine to implement an extremely successful micro-workout program at home where he takes a break every hour to perform a few minutes of bodyweight exercises. The show covers the emerging fitness revolution of kinder, gentler workouts that minimize muscle soreness, post-exercise fatigue and the high risk of burnout that comes from the traditional approach of doing epic workouts in high energy group settings. The great work of Pavel Tsatsouline, Dr. Craig Marker, Dr. Phil Maffetone and MMA trainer Firas Zahabi is referenced. The priority seems to be switching from doing epic sessions at the gym that come with high risk of exhaustion to simply being more active in everyday life, and also finding ways to perform fitness activities "under the radar"--where they don't fatigue you but deliver an awesome cumulative fitness benefit. The rationale for this is even stronger when you consider the compensation theory insights that increased calorie burning during workouts does not lead to fat loss. Dude also talks about how to minimize blue light exposure in your home, especially in the evenings, so you can facilitate healthy melatonin production in the evening and a natural cortisol and serotonin boost in the morning.
Dude is a lifelong health and wellness enthusiast and amateur athlete. Before a brief cross country season in college, Dude was a 2x state champion in the mile, the two mile, and the mile relay. After his first marathon, Dude became interested in Ultramarathons and his endurance career peaked in 2006 when he ran 16 ultramarathons in one year. Dude has also done some fairly extreme self-supported distance challenges, including two double crossings of the grand canyon, and a 143 mile 3 day adventure in the High Sierra in California. He has also summited the 3rd highest peak in North America, and many smaller mountains. Like many people in today's society, by mid-life Dude found himself drifting away from being active as the pursuits of career and family consumed so much time and attention. By 2012, Dude was 50 lbs overweight with aches and pains all over, culminating in a back injury that left him debilitated on the floor, unable to move. The injured back was a wake up call that led Dude on a personal journey back to health and wellness. He lost 50 lbs, started running again, placed 3rd in the Speedgolf World Championships, and earned a Health Coaching certification from the Primal Health Coach Institute. Dude now coaches people how to regain their health after a lifetime of office work and modern lifestyle that keeps us sedentary, indoors, and eating processed foods. Dude has made the journey himself and has tremendous passion for people who find it difficult to extract themselves from the modern traps that keep us unhealthy. His mission is to find these people and guide them back to health and vitality. Dude has been on several podcasts, which you can find here: Endurance: Dude Spellings: A Primal journey from carb addition and 212lbs to 165lb fat burning beast Dude Spellings, Part 1: Cold Exposure Benefits And Balancing Training And Life Stress Dude Spellings, Part 2: Destroying Self-Limiting Beliefs And Flawed Childhood Programming, and Crossing The Grand Canyon With No Food! After Bank Of Ireland's volte-face on refunding customers who were conned in an SMS phishing campaign, this week's podcast looks at the ‘smishing' issue in some detail. How does smishing actually work? Is it the fault of SMS gateways that lots of companies use? Joining Adrian is Dr Jessica Barker, co-founder if Cygenta and a cyber security expert who's particularly good at explaining cyber issues. She points out that sometimes the dodgy grammar used by phishing fraudsters is deliberate, to make easier marques more clearly identifiable to them.

Spelling is the writing of one or more words with letters and diacritics. In addition, the term often, but not always, means an accepted standard spelling or the process of naming the letters. In the sense of a standard, spelling is one of the elements of orthography and a prescriptive element of alphabetic languages. Spellings attempt to transcribe the sounds of the language into alphabetic letters, but phonetic spellings are exceptions in many languages for various reasons. As English is […]

In episode 162, Kestrel welcomes Sarah Spellings, a fashion writer for New York Magazine’s The Cut. Having been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and CBS New York, among others, Sarah’s recent writing about sustainable fashion and going fast fashion free in 2018 has generated an array of interest. “A lot of my friends were like, ‘you’re no fun to shop with anymore.’ And she was like, ok, it’s the end of the year — basically, are you going to be fun again? And I was like ‘no, it’s a lifestyle change.’ And that’s what I realized is that it is more of a lifestyle change.” -Sarah Spellings, writer for New York Magazine’s The Cut On this week’s show, Sarah shares more on what she learned throughout her fast fashion free year. She talks about how she started the pledge writing about “what she was wearing instead”, but quickly realized that it wasn’t actually about buying — it was more about not buying, buying less, reusing and recycling. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: “I Gave Up Fast Fashion. Here’s What I’m Wearing Instead.” “What I Learned When I Gave Up Fast Fashion” “Your Questions About Food and Climate Change, Answered: How To Shop, Cook and Eat In A Warming World” on the New York Times “People are more inclined to read a sustainability story when it feels personal to them. I think that my advice for people wanting to write about sustainability in mainstream media is to break it down and make it personal.” Maggie Marilyn, made the pajamas Sarah wore to a Met Gala event Sarah's personal website

Hangovers are never a positive experience and some are harder to shake than others, especially when it comes to education. We have so many bad (pedagogically speaking) ideas that seem to persist in the system. The crowning glory, of course, is the Leaving Cert, which is a terrible way to judge someone's educational attainment, yet it persists and, worse, it is staunchly defended as being “fair” and, even, “up there with the best models.” However, there's other things we keep on doing just because we've always done them – the morning news on the blackboard (or whiteboard or whatever colour the board is or will be), homework, religion, and Friday tests. Yes, for some peculiar reason, despite all the evidence that the Friday test in spellings and tables are, at best, completely meaningless, they can be harmful to most types of learners.

North Carolina has been able to cut tax rates in recent years without having to slash state services. That’s thanks to sustainable budget practices. Joseph Coletti, John Locke Foundation senior fellow, outlines several key steps lawmakers have taken to pursue sustainable budgets. When Margaret Spellings wrapped up her tenure as president of the University of North Carolina System, she offered the Board of Governors a positive assessment of UNC’s current state. Shannon Watkins, policy associate at the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, says Spellings and other university leaders might be viewing UNC through “rose-colored glasses.” Watkins explains why the actual picture isn’t as bright as Spellings suggested. State lawmakers deal with important issues. They also deal with ice cream. One bill moving through the General Assembly would designate ice cream as the state’s official frozen treat. North Carolina’s congressional election map headed back to the U.S. Supreme Court recently. You’ll hear highlights from oral arguments, including pointed questions from Supreme Court justices about partisan gerrymandering. Supporters of Medicaid expansion in North Carolina want to fund their proposal with a new tax on health care providers. Republicans have been able to cut tax rates, balance budgets, and increase spending on high-priority items since taking control of the N.C. General Assembly in 2011. But they will face some new challenges as they return to the budget process in the new year. Joseph Coletti, John Locke Foundation senior fellow, outlines those challenges. Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman delivered free-market messages to a wide television audience with his “Free to Choose” program on public TV. The Free to Choose Network follows in Friedman’s footsteps with a series of programs highlighting the importance of markets. President and CEO Robert Chatfield discusses the network’s latest projects. Before announcing plans to step down as UNC System president, Margaret Spellings offered praise for a program designed to highlight two cost-saving programs for students within the statewide university system. Spellings touted the taxpayer-funded We Promise campaign during a meeting with the system’s Board of Governors. Absentee ballot irregularities in southeastern North Carolina prompted members of the N.C. elections board to delay certifying results of the hotly contested 9th District congressional race. As elections officials investigated, three Republican state senators called on the governor to establish a new bipartisan task force to look into the issue. You’ll hear why they believe an outside group should probe allegations of illegal activity involving absentee ballots. A special N.C. House committee has unveiled its proposals for addressing safety in the state’s public schools. Lindsay Marchello, Carolina Journal associate editor, covered the committee’s debate of its final report. Marchello highlights the group’s top priorities.
Gov. Roy Cooper has signed an executive order calling on state agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to have North Carolina follow through on dictates of the Paris climate agreement, even though the Trump administration has pulled the United States out of that agreement. Donald van der Vaart, John Locke Foundation senior fellow and former N.C. environmental secretary, dissects Cooper’s order and analyzes its implications. Many American cities appear to face a state of decline. The group Strong Towns endorses action that would help reverse that decline. Development director Bo Wright discusses Strong Towns’ recommendations. That includes the roles public and private actors should take. After less than three years on the job, UNC System President Margaret Spellings has announced plans to resign in March. Despite the surprise announcement, Spellings told reporters she is proud of the system’s accomplishments during her tenure. She outlined some of those accomplishments during a recent news conference. Today’s college students have embraced activism to a degree last seen in the 1970s. But former Yale professor William Deresiewicz recently cautioned a Duke audience against treating college as a way to promote that activism. Deresiewicz made a plea for a traditional liberal-arts education that forces people to think, reason, and question their beliefs. The federal government has granted North Carolina a waiver to make major changes in its Medicaid program. Among the changes is a shift from a fee-for-service system to one in which the state allots a set amount of funding to address care for each Medicaid patient. Statewide and regional groups will contract with state government to manage its Medicaid services. Dan Way, Carolina Journal associate editor, discusses waiver details and assesses the significance for Medicaid’s future.
Brad continues a lively conversation with Dude Spellings of Austin, TX. Dude describes how he overcame his frustration with his "slow" MAF training and allowed himself to build a strong aerobic base. Oh yeah, he also lost another 25 pounds to get down to lean, mean racing weight decades after being a hotshot young runner. Brad and Dude expound on the benefits and rationale for emphasizing aerobic training. Dude offers a great insight about measuring your aerobic output by time instead of by mileage. Top marathoners run 120 miles per week, but they are only out there for 10 hours, you know? Dude and Brad will get you psyched to delve into the wonderful world of cold therapy, and Dude exclaims that his cold exposure practice has made him a more chill guy in real life. He offers scientific references to mention that excess body fat might be a function of not just diet, but constant exposure to pleasant ambient temperatures, and excess blue light exposure messing with your appetite hormones. You'll be ready to take your first cold shower after listening to Dude and Brad! In training for competing, we used to think that you had to produce as much work as possible without thinking of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. [00:01:55] Think about this: What is the highest purpose for being out that working out? . [00:04:30] By training with the MAF method, the performance can escalate without risking burnout. [00:09:22] The amount of time you are putting in is more important than the amount of miles. [00:11:01] Cold therapy is the natural way to go. After the initial shock of the water, you get the flood of chemicals that give you high. [00:14:08] The mental benefits of exposure to the cold are many. You can learn to take control over your life rather than being reactive. [00:22:00] Exposure to artificial light is common in our society. This messes up our sleep cycle and the mitochondrial function. [00:23:48] Public consciousness is dragging behind. When the sun goes down, our body thinks it is to go to sleep, however, we expose ourselves to artificial light which is a contributing factor to obesity. [00:30:03] The unnatural light is why the ketogenic diet works for most people. [00:32:21] Playing speed golf opened Dude up to getting good fitness and nutrition goals in place. [00:33:26] It is an important element in life to have competitive goals. Brad Kearns talks to a big-time peak performance enthusiast from Austin, TX named Dude Spellings. Dude is an avid Speedgolfer, primal/paleo/keto eater, cold therapy enthusiast, and endurance athlete devoted to the Primal Endurance approach. He is deep into the primal living journey and a student of all latest health topics and you will enjoy this two-part episode chock full of great tips from a real guy doing his best to balance a busy life, delay aging, and pursue peak performance goals. Dude was a high school running champion who let himself get overweight and out of shape. He returned to fitness with a traditional chronic approach and hit a plateau. He had lost 20 pounds but had 25 more to go. Part 1 starts with the compelling account of how Dude threw his back out six years ago and vowed to "not be that guy" in the years ahead. He was doing okay with health and fitness goals but realized he could be much better. He was suffering from an annoying recurring skin condition that wasn't responding to medical treatment but cleared when he optimized his diet. Pick up some good tips and reflections to be the best you can be from Dude, and stay tuned for part 2! TIME STAMPS: When he wanted to lose weight he tried the "old-fashioned way" using My Fitness Pal, counting calories. [00:03:28] Dude's back injury was a turning point for him. [00:07:05] He realized that cutting calories too much kills the weight loss! [00:11:59] He still believed that carbohydrate intake was needed for exercise. [00:13:56] It is estimated that 40 percent of the calories that you get in a restaurant are from the refined seed oils that are so bad for you. [00:14:52] A good starting point is to get in the habit of reading labels. You'd be surprised what you are eating even when you are trying to eat healthy!! [00:16:28] Some people find that their allergies, skin diseases, and other maladies disappear after they drop grains from their diet. [00:21:32] The elephant in the room in the endurance community is the excess body fat. [00:28:14] The Maffetone's training was Dude's motivation for his great success. [00:31:22] Meal choices are part of your training. [00:35:22] The way he was training before was keeping him constantly sore with muscle tension. Spelling is the combination of alphabetic letters to form a written word. It is a linguistic process of correct writing with the necessary letters and diacritics present in a comprehensible, usually standardized order. While a part of a language's orthography, not all languages have purely phonemic alphabets. Standardized spelling is a prescriptive element. Spellings originated as transcriptions of the sounds of spoken language according to the alphabetic principle. They remain largely reflective of the sounds, although fully phonemic spelling is an ideal that most languages' orthographies only approximate, some more closely than others. This is true for various reasons, including that pronunciation changes over time in all languages, yet spellings as visual norms may resist change. In addition, words from other languages may be adopted without being adapted to the spelling system, and different meanings of a word or homophones may be deliberately spelled in different ways to differentiate them visually. Episode 6 sees Eric and Phil dissecting the final pair of stop/plosive sounds in English: /k/ and /ɡ/. As always, we work our way around the task of describing the sounds, their history, and usage in the course of about an hour and 10 minutes.Show Notes:Correction: Phil referred to "Findlay" as derived from Finn's Lea, but it turns out that it's from Gaelic, and that means Fionnlagh – "fair warrior." Bradley would have been a much better example: Brad=broad and Lea=meadow.voiceless/voiced velar plosive: co-articulation, double action of closing the mouth with the back of the tongue at the soft palate, and closing off the nasal passage by lifting the soft palate at the velo-pharyngeal port.Let’s take a tour of the anatomy. This will help us to deal with the idea that /t/ is apico alveolar but /k/ is dorsovelarThe Roof of the MouthTectal: an adjective derived from the anatomical term "tectum," a roof-like structure. Labia/labial: the lips; bilabial with both lips, labio-dental with lower lip and upper teeth, as in /f/ and /v/. (For people with an extreme overbite, one might make a dento-labial sound (upper lip and lower teeth.)Dental: the teeth (as heard in the “th” sounds, /θ/ & /ð/ )Alveolar ridge/alveolar: the gum ridge, behind the upper front teethPalate/palatal: the hard palate, rising up behind the alveolar ridge. Phil describes a small hole in his palate; Eric, in searching the net for information on this, could only find stuff about "Jacobsen's Organ" aka Vomeronasal organ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomeronasal_organ, an auxiliary olfactory sense organ; it's thoroughly debatable whether it exists in humans at all. Who knows what Phil has? (apparently, he hasn't had any of this since college days...)Velum/velar: the soft palate, behind the hard palateUvula/uvular: the "small grape"-like structure that hangs down from the arch of the soft palatePharynx/pharyngeal: the column or space behind the tongue, the "chimney" that goes from the larynx up to the noseEpiglottis/epiglottal: the flap-like value that protects the larynx during swallowingGlottis/glottal: the vocal folds (technically the SPACE between the vocal folds, which disappears every time the vocal folds vibrateAri-Epiglottal/ False Vocal Folds: [there was some debate between Phil and Eric how Dudley Do-Right sounded, and whether it was ari-epiglottal tension or velar tension...The Parts of the TongueTip or Apex/apical: front edge of the tongue, the 'rim' of the tongueBlade or Lamina/laminal: the front part of the tongue, the top surfaceBack or Dorsum/dorsal: the back of the tongue, which is subdivided into: Front, Middle, Back, or, Front and Back —antero-dorsal or postero-dorsalRoot or Radix/radical: the root of the tongue/k/ and /ɡ/ are different from other plosives because it is made on the back of the tongue, which works in a more gross mannercan be made further forward /ki/ or further back /kɑ/. Challenge of learning /k/ and /ɡ/ for children because they are made further back in the mouthThe McGurk Effect Experiment: Can you identify Phil's 3 sounds? World Atlas of Language Structures: http://wals.info/ WALS shows 2,650 languages and notes 32 missing / ɡ /Languages that are missing /ɡ/ but not /k/From Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_velar_plosive ] "Of the six plosives that would be expected from the most common pattern world-wide—that is, three places of articulation plus voicing ([p b, t d, k ɡ])—[p] and [ɡ] are the most frequently missing, being absent in about 10% of languages that otherwise have this pattern.[...] It seems that [ɡ] is somewhat more difficult to articulate than the other basic plosives. "Ian Maddieson speculates that this may be due to a physical difficulty in voicing velars: Voicing requires that air flow into the mouth cavity, and the relatively small space allowed by the position of velar consonants means that it will fill up with air quickly, making voicing difficult to maintain in [ɡ] for as long as it is in [d] or [b]."HISTORY OF THE LETTERS:In Greek the symbol of the K (Kappa) turned the "right way" (the way it is in our writing), prior to this it was facing the other direction. Gamma was brought into Latin to represent the C. C had a line added to it to indicate the voiced version, G.SPELLINGS:k “key, keep, koala, kangaroo” “mask, make, pink, walk”c “cat, cost, cut” (contrast “cease, ace, ,macerate ”) Hard/softcc “accuse, stucco” ck “pick, stock”ch “charisma, Christ, choir, ache”Shakespeare's "Petruchio" probably should be [pəʼtɹu.tʃo] not [pəʼtɹu.ki.oʊ]g “game, gate, bag, agony” (contrast “gem, badge, magical ”) Hard/softgg “egg, dagger”gh “ghost, ghetto” (contrast “night, ought”)gu “guide, guest, guerrilla” foreign originckg blackguardx “examine, exhaust”Note that "x" can be /ks/ or /gz/ depending on the word, e.g. /ks/ "excellent" , /gz/ "exist".Soft G is the affricate /dʒ/, while Soft C is /s/.PHONETIC NOTATION: represented by lower case k and ɡIPA symbol for /ɡ/ is the "single-story" version of the g lowercase with an open tail, rather than a looptail. VARIATIONS:Not a lot of variations: mostly to do with voice onset timeVariation: final /k/ becoming fricative in Liverpool week [wiç], like [laiç], back [bax], dock [dɒχ]John Maidment, commenting on JC Wells' blog post on "VOT is more":"One might also like to add that VOT is sensitive to place of articulation. Other things being equal, the VOT of posterior articulations, velar and uvular, are considerably longer, at least for native English speakers, than articulations further forward in the vocal tract. A typical VOT for stressed syllable initial [k] in English is in the region of 120ms, while that for an equivalent [p]is only 60-70ms. I am pretty sure that this difference is an important secondary cue for the perception of place in voiceless plosives and one which, as far as I know, has not been properly investigated."Non-English Stop plosivesPalatalized stops (often heard in Russian, [tʲ] [dʲ] vs. Palatal stop [c] or [ɟ]Uvular stop, as in Arabic pronunciation of Qatar or Iraq [q].Though it's unlikely that a character will do a sound substitution on stop-plosives, however, characters might speak foreign language work, or say words within the text, such as place names or character names.Original Pronunciation: David Crystal is the leading proponent of this type of pronunciation, especially at the Globe Shakespeare Company in London. http://www.davidcrystal.com/DC_articles/Shakespeare11.pdf
We’re digging into /t/ and /d/ on Glossonomia this week. Hosts Phil Thompson and Eric Armstrong discuss how we make this cognate pair of consonants, voiceless and voiced alveolar stop/plosives. Today’s Topics include: • the concept of Lenition (softening), in particular, the terms Fortis vs. Lenis. • Voice Onset Time (VOT): when does the voicing begin? Normally, /t/ in English is aspirated at the beginning of stressed syllables. In English, initial /d/ in stressed syllables is, essentially voiceless but unaspirated, whereas intervocalic (between two vowels). • In Phonecian, the word for the letter D was, in fact “door”—daleth. • T comes from Greek Tau, and Semitic Tav, which resembled a simple cross. • Spellings: t (Ted, atop, get), th (Thames, Thomas, thyme), pt- (ptarmigan, pterodactyl, pterigoid) • Wikipedia has a paragraph on the origins of the name Thames, and its Greek influenced Th- spelling • IPA [th] for aspiration, [t=] for unaspirated; [d] • There is no perfect phonetic way to notate things; there are many ways to heaven in the phonetic realm • Apart from English, there are many languages where /t/ is not aspirated • “Cool” words of the week—prevocalic: before a vowel; postvocalic: after a vowel; intervocalic: between 2 vowels. • No audible release of final /t/ “but, not, that” IPA [ bʌt ̚ nɒt ̚ ðæt ̚ ] • devoicing of consonant clusters tr-, -tl, tw-, • preceding /s/, as in steam, “deaspirates” the /t/, and may reduce the devoicing in stream. • past-participles: -ed endings following a voiceless consonant are /t/ e.g. hoped is pronounced [ hoʊpt ], following a voiced consonant or vowel are pronounced /d/ • Orthoepy: the “correct” pronunciation of a language, or a tradition of pronouncing words as they are spelled; e.g. often with a /t/ or not • Intervocalic /t/: In North America typically a voiced tap [ɾ] or [ t̬ ] • Sound Patterns of Spoken English by Lynda Shockey • Glottaling, using the glottal stop, as it “Hit me, baby, one more time” • Assimilation, where the sound is moved to the place of the following consonant • Glottal reinforcement: /t/ supported by closure in the glottis • Ejectives: non-pulmonic is “not from the lungs” IPA [ t’ ]: the glottis is closed and the larynx rises to pressurize the [ t’ ] behind the closure at the gum ridge • geminate or twinned consonants, e.g. hit Ted, either the first is unreleased, or we may use “double tapping” (to release both /t/ sounds) • Raymond Hickey Irish English Resource Centre slit /t/ and in Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand; Kath & Kim’s grayshsh; JIPA: The acoustic character of fricated /t/ in Australian English: A comparison with /s/ and /ʃ/ by Mark J. Jones and Kirsty McDougall • Palatal versions of /t/ and /d/ (IPA [c] and [ɟ] ) • Back of tongue sloppiness vs. Front of tongue agility; greater phonetic variation with tongue tip • /t/ epenthesis, e.g. Prince vs. prints; tense vs. tents; sense vs. cents • Prescriptions: watch out for [ts] in initial settings “splashy /t/”; skills to be able to do unaspirated /t/ or to have an early voice onset on /d/ (I’d probaby notate that as [d̬]“Some of the things we’re talking about are questions of precision. ‘Inappropriate Precision’ is what robots do. What dancers do is ‘appropriate precision,’ we hope. And so, dancers of the mouth ought to be equivalently curious about, and in love with, the possibility of precision but only as it achieves the gracefulness, or expressiveness, or wildness that’s required of the artistic endeavour in front of them.”Next week we’re on to the vowel sound happY. Dude was a champion runner in his youth, then went down the tired road of decline to become an overweight, fatigued office worker with 45 pounds of excess weight. A portal opened by way of his exposure to the incredibly awesome sport of Speedgolf. After Dude’s first round, he was hooked! But he was also awakened to the idea that carrying around an extra 45 pounds was not helping his performance. Duly inspired, Dude dropped a quick 25 pounds with a traditional calorie restriction and regimented exercise approach. Then he stalled and started looking for a better way that would enable further progress. Dude did some careful research and planning and decided to adopt the Primal Endurance approach to his weight loss and endurance-related goals for Speedgolf. Boom! Dude dropped another 20 pounds in short order using Maximum Aerobic Function (180-age) training and a low-carb, Primal-style eating strategy. From his entry point as a dude trying to lose weight, Dude has gone off the deep end of health research and lifestyle practices. He talks about the dangers of blue light exposure and how to mitigate it. Did you know your computer screen is four times as bright as the midday sun? Blasting your eyeballs with this powerful artificial light source, especially after dark, can result in all manner of hormonal dysregulation. In particular, you will mess up your appetite and metabolic hormones such that you crave more sugar and store more fat. Enjoy this wide-ranging discussion with Primal Health Coach Dude (or watch it on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRZmdjg5Ndo ) !) as we cover weight gain and long-term weight loss and the importance of protecting yourself from blue light exposure, as well as Dr. Robert Lustig’s book The Hacking of American Mind (which I covered in a previous episode ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/12/20/hacking-the-american-mind-1/ ) ) that apply to Dude’s own personal experience with healthy living. We ask ourselves: how much should we worry about things like EMF, without letting our awareness create more stress and negativity? Can fasting be the most effective way of recovering from grueling endurance performances? Dude may not be a household name pushing a hot new book or product, but hearing real people’s stories about living real life on the edge will be very inspiring and informative.
