We spent the New Year holiday on Oahu at one of our favorite Disney destinations, the Aulani Resort in Ko Olina. There's so much to do at Aulani itself, and amazing activities for the whole family around the island. We did a UTV tour around Kualoa Ranch, visited Pearl Harbor with the USS Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri battleship tours, and spent a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Of course we also enjoyed Aulani itself, complete with an impressive fireworks display to ring in the new year - both official and unofficial. What a magical holiday! Here are some helpful links to all the amazing spots we talk about on this week's episode:Aulani Hawaii ResortKualoa Ranch | Hawaii's Premier Adventure DestinationPearl Harbor National Memorial (U.S. National Park Service)Pearl Harbor Memorial - USS Battleship Missouri MemorialPolynesian Cultural CenterMonkeypod KitchenRestaurant 604 - Fusion restaurant in Honolulu, HI----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. In this episode of the podcast, I dive into the unforgettable spots in Hawaii that make the islands a unique paradise to live on. From personal anecdotes to expert insights, we explore the landscapes and experiences that have left a lasting impression on residents and travelers alike. Join us as we journey through the beauty and diversity of Hawaii. This podcast is your guide to understanding why these spots are etched in the memories of those who experience them and make it so I never tire of living here. East Shore to Windward side Venturing just 15 miles east of Honolulu leads to the serene beginning of Oahu's Windward Coast, stretching to Kahana Bay. Along this picturesque shoreline, abundant trails, beaches, lava tubes, and surf breaks await exploration, offering endless opportunities for hiking and beachcombing. Families often enjoy the paved Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail, while seasoned surfers tackle the challenging waves of Makapuʻu Beach and Sandy Beach.Sherwoods Beach in Waimānalo holds a special place in my heart. Its soft sands, gentle waves, and stunning backdrop of the Ko'olau mountains make it a beloved spot for family outings. After a day by the sea, the journey home is sprinkled with local delights like shave ice, lau lau, and malasadas, adding a flavorful touch to the experience.Further along Windward Oahu, Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach beckon windsurfers and kayakers with their pristine beauty. Kualoa Ranch, a vast 4,000-acre reserve, offers thrilling adventures such as zip lining and horseback riding, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich 'āina (land) heritage. And tucked away like a hidden treasure, Sherwood Beach enchants with its gentle waves and panoramic views of the majestic Ko'olau mountains. Upcountry Maui Every time I head to Maui one of my first treks is Upcountry and a visit to Haleakalā National Park. Spanning over 30,000 acres, the park is dominated by a dormant volcano, occupying 75 percent of Maui and soaring to 10,023 feet. Haleakalā is a sanctuary for numerous endangered and indigenous species, its name translating to "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian. Locals revere it as a sacred site where ancient high priests sought wisdom through meditation. Exploring Upcountry Maui, I suggest visiting the Saturday Upcountry Farmers Market in Makawao. Here, you'll discover an array of locally sourced delights, from tropical fruits to artisanal goods and fresh blooms. We always take a trip to Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm, where we stock up on Lavender soap, lotion, and sanitizer and always find something new to bring back to Honolulu that we can't find here. We Podcast About Hawaii Because We Love Hawaii Get Help Planning Your Trip Kauai South Shore The less developed island of Kauai is nicknamed the "Garden Island." Home to one of the wettest spots on Earth, Mount Waialeale, this destination receives a good amount of rain. But the South Shore is a slightly drier escape. This sunny swath of Kauai is popular among snorkelers, swimmers, and Poipu Beach resort guests. For sure, the South Shore has some of the best sunsets. Baby Beach, is I think one of the best places to see it, This is a protected cove just west of Poipu Beach, where you'll find "calm, ankle-deep waters, perfect for families with babies — hence the name — and small children." Also, a place known as Sunset Wall, a local favorite spot at Koloa Landing, is just down the road from Ko'a Kea Resort. Also, I love the Sunsets from Salt Pond Beach Park, where a protected lagoon with clear water offers a serene sunset experience. Hamakua Coast - Hawaii Island I love this drive so much that I can't wait to return to it every time I am on the Big Island. It starts with the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive, conveniently nestled just a short drive north of Hilo on Highway 19, offering a delightful escape into the essence of old Hawai'i.

It wasn't supposed to be, but as it turns out this week's look back at a previous Disney vacation turns out to be the last time we were in Hawaii … and that was all the way back in 2018. Don't worry, we're fixing that in just a couple short months. This week we cover our DVC Home of Aulani Resort, Kualoa Ranch, and finding secret treasures via the Shaka Guide app. We can't recommend both Kualoa and Shaka Guide highly enough. When most people think of traveling to Hawaii, they think of lying on the beach or walking around Waikiki, but in this program, visitors are getting their hands dirty and learning about Hawaiian culture. It's all part of what the Hawaii Tourism Authority calls "voluntourism" -- a new movement to change the type of visitor that is coming to Hawaii and reimagine what tourism looks like.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Hawaii News Now) - It sounds like the plot of a crime drama: An organized crime boss orders a hit on a man in order to get revenge for the death of his son. But federal prosecutors investigating Mike Miske, the alleged leader of what they describe as a sprawling criminal enterprise, say that's exactly what happened. And Lindsey Kinney says he was caught in the middle of it. Kinney says in 2016, he was offered $50,000 to kill a young man named Johnathan Fraser but he turned it down. Kinney said that decision — to deny Miske's request — put his own life in danger. In 2017, he said, Norman L. Akau III told him Mike Miske wanted to fight him near Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. But when Kinney showed up, he narrowly escaped gunfire. Months after Kinney said he turned down Miske's request to kill Fraser, the 21-year-old vanished. Fraser was the sole survivor of a Kaneohe car crash the year before, in which Miske's son, Caleb, died. Kinney said after the crash, Miske started plotting Fraser's murder. In this episode we discuss the events above, Lindsey's dedication to God and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/toddatkinsshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/toddatkinsshow/support

Hawaii recently revealed a new initiative that offers travelers a free night in a hotel in exchange for volunteer work. The initiative, called Mālama Hawai‘i, is implemented in conjunction with hotels all over the island. It allows visitors to participate in various voluntourism efforts and creative ventures, like tree planting, beach cleanups, ocean reef preservation, and quilt-making. As a perk for participating, travelers get to stay one night at a hotel for free. Before the pandemic, almost 10 million people came to Hawaii every year. The sheer amount of visitors usually disturbs the locals' lives because of heavy traffic, crowded beaches, environmental harm, and the like. These disruptions have led to a strained relationship between Hawaiian locals and tourists. As a way of improving the impact of tourism in Hawaii, the Mālama Hawai‘i program was created to encourage responsible travel among tourists and to get them involved in voluntourism efforts during their trip. Currently, around 36 hotels across Hawaii are participating in the initiative. Each hotel offers a unique package that supports different local nonprofit organizations. For example, the Outrigger Waikiki resort offers visitors a free third night stay at its hotel for joining an eco-program at Kualoa Ranch, a private nature reserve. The Alohilani Resort also offers a free fifth night stay, a free luxury car rental, and a $200 resort credit to travelers if they volunteer to plant trees. Alaska Airlines also participated in the program, promising to plant a tree for every flight made to Hawaii in 2020.

Behind the scenes of the 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch on Windward Oʻahu is John Morgan, its president and owner. He’s a sixth-generation member of the kamaʻāina Morgan family. Today we will continue our Sustainable Leaders series and join some of the keynote speakers and panelists from the Hawaii Agriculture Conference 2019 held at the Hawaii Convention Center. We will begin w/ Taylor Kellerman, Board President of the Agriculture Leadership Foundation of Hawaii and Director of Diversified Agriculture & Land Stewardship of Kualoa Ranch. We will then jump right into the two keynote speakers, Jamie Tuuta & Michelle Galimba and close w/ three other speakers from the conference: Stephanie Mock, Jayme Barton and Jacob Tavares. Jamie Tuuta, keynote: Chair of the New Zealand Tourism Board, which is responsible for marketing New Zealand as a global destination. He is inspired by the opportunities for New Zealand to be an exemplar for other countries. He is also the Chair of Māori Television, Te Ohu Kaimoana (the Māori Fisheries Commission) and Taranaki Mounga, an ambitious project with a vision to restore ecological resilience to more than 34,000 hectares from the mountain to the sea. As the former Māori Trustee and CEO of Te Tumu Paeroa, he administered 100,000 hectares of Māori land throughout the country. Jamie is passionate about investing in innovation and increasing the economic and environmental performance of New Zealand’s primary industries, particularly the Māori pastoral and fishing sectors, and developing the capacity and capability of Māori. Michelle Galimba, keynote: Michelle runs Kuahiwi Ranch w/ her brother, Guy Galimba. Their family ranch provides locally grown beef to supermarkets, farmer’s markets and restaurants on O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island. She grew up on dairy farms in Hawai‘i and has been involved with her family’s ranch since it started on abandoned sugar-cane acreage in the early 1990’s. Having grown up in agriculture in Hawai‘i, she has seen first-hand the stresses and constraints which make farming and ranching particularly challenging. For the complete town and country experience on Oahu, grab a rental and make tracks for Haleiwa, the North Shore gateway. Getting there is half the fun, because you have two wildly distinct choices. I opted to meander back to Honolulu Airport, at the end of my trip, along the lush Windward Coast, through sleepy hamlets with roadside stands selling succulent mangoes, bright tropical pareu, fresh corn, and pond-raised prawns. The route offers the most arresting vistas of those emerald-hued volcanic ranges, with their strikingly corrugated folds of Jurassic Park fame. Huddled at its base is the famed movie-set location of Kualoa Ranch. But when you’re first heading to the North Shore, take the Central Oahu route via H2. The red-earthed heart of the island is a broad and fertile valley, where pineapple and sugar-canes march their way to the Waianae Mountains. An hour out of Honolulu and just past Wahiawa, the route becomes the Kamehameha Highway (H99) which is where I made my first stop. How could you possibly pass the Dole Pineapple Plantation and the delectable temptation of devouring a scoop or two of Dole Whip? This pineapple-infused soft-serve delight is just the first of many signature tastes that radiantly embodies the sensory allure of North Oahu. I dropped by early morning, sans the crowds, downing my Dole Whip while gazing at the Pineapple Express locomotive, which heartily blew its whistle to herald the start of the new day’s service. It’s just 10 minutes drive from Dole Plantation to Haleiwa, Hawaii's surf city. This quaint and rustic sugar-plantation town now enjoys historic protection. Its ensemble of faded clapboard stores, strung around a picturesque harbour, sets the stage for the surfie crowd, who flock here from all over the planet. Haleiwa is their holy-grail, a surf mecca, groaning with raffishly charming roadside surfie stores, boutique galleries and eateries. But the most compelling mercantile landmark would have to be Surf N Sea, where its vintage architecture pays homage to its legacy. Originally, the century-old beachfront building was a train station with accommodation upstairs. The Haleiwa Hotel was Hawaii’s first destination resort, before morphing into a general store after World War II. Since 1965, it’s been home to Surf N Sea, Hawaii’s oldest surf and dive shop. Joe Green has been the ebullient owner for the past 35 years and warmly welcomed me into his part-shop, part-ocean sports shrine, brimming with over 300 surfboards and every imaginable surf brand. Feasting my eyes on all of the surf memorabilia, it’s no wonder many surfies consider this place museum-worthy. The rustic ceilings and walls hold Green's personal collection of vintage surfboards, including the Duke's final fibreglass board from 1968. Joe is also a master ukulele-maker, all handmade from 100% recycled wood, including mango, koa and opuma. Joe salvaged and reshaped ipe wood from the building’s floors, which he has repurposed into the fret board bridges adorning all of his ukuleles. Impeccably designed, they’re an incomparable buy – an authentic slice of Haleiwa to take home. Joe patiently tried to teach me how to play the ukulele – with mixed results. More iconic North Shore tastes were calling, and just down the road from Surf N Sea is Matsumoto Shave Ice’s original store in Haleiwa. Established in 1951, the pioneers of Hawaiian snow cones were doing a roaring trade when I lined up for my rainbow-striped offering of sweet syrup infused shave ice. Then there’s Ted’s Bakery, another North Shore legend, where you’ll swoon over their insatiable chocolate haupia pie. It is chocolaty, coconutty and encrusted with macadamias. What a knock-out! And you’ll want to stake out the hole in the wall bakery in the middle of a field, just west of Haleiwa. Paalaa Kai bakery is a 40 year old institution beloved for its freshly-made snow puffies, flaky and buttery pastries, stuffed with cold, creamy custard and topped with swirls of...
