It's hard to keep going without knowing where the finish line is. But you can persevere more easily with some techniques like segmentation (“Two miles to the top.”) Simon Marshall, my former mentor and coach, who passed away from pancreatic cancer on June 1, 2024, taught me this on a fateful day in 2017. Hear a touching story of how he impacted my life and inspired me to attempt to ride 100k in the upcoming Tour De Cure 2024 in his memory. He and his wife Lesley Paterson offer many other valuable lessons in enduring suffering in their book, The Brave Athlete. With over 400 triathlons to her name, today's guest Lesley Paterson is a 3x XTERRA Triathlon World Champion and 2x World Triathlon Cross Champion. But if you asked about her greatest test of endurance, it wouldn't be a race. It would be chasing an Oscar. For 16 years during her professional triathlon career, Lesley fought to secure and maintain the film rights to All Quiet on the Western Front out of her own pocket from race winnings. She wrote and rewrote the script, and despite the odds stacked heavily against her, never gave up on her dream of getting the movie made. After many years of starts and stops the film was finally released and took home four Oscars and seven BAFTAs—including one for best-adapted screenplay (this was Lesley's first screenplay might I add). All of which is a testament to her patience, discipline, and hard work. Lesley's relentless persistence is the focus of today's conversation, along with the importance of self-belief, playing the long game, and the ‘never quit' drive required to crush audacious goals. Delightful, engaging, and strong, I adore Lesley. There's a lot to learn from this fiery Scottish lassie. Note: If you like this exchange, be sure to check out her book The Brave Athlete, which is packed with actionable practices to build an endurance mindset. Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min) buckle-up for Lesley Paterson's extraordinary story of 'Triathletic Ascension' from being 3 times World Champion ExTerra Triathlete to BAFTA + 4 x OSCAR Award Winning glory!A story of grit, determination, tenacity and courage in how she overcome against all the odds, a bike crash, a broken shoulder, an injured leg AND Lime Disease to win & raise the ‘last push' £10,000 to re-secure the rights for her film, which then went on to secure all of the Awards for "All Quiet On The Western Front", including the OSCAR for Best International Feature. The stuff of Hollywood right there!Lesley Paterson earned the nickname ‘The Scottish Rocket' after wining no fewer than 5 world titles in athletics. More recently, she has picked up a new clutch of world-class awards in a completely different field, as the screenwriter of the Oscar-winning new version of "All Quiet On The Western Front".The youngest of 4, Lesley had older brothers to compete with. She played rugby with the boys and earned their respect. She enjoyed running for its spiritual values as well as its fitness benefits. Lesley also spent time training as a ballet dancer and later studying theatre and film in San Diego. A genuinely liberated renaissance woman, when it came to competitive swimming, Lesley said she had ‘the heart but not the numbers.' This didn't stop her winning her first world medal, in Maui, in a triathlon, in 2011. And that was after giving her competitors a 10 minute start while she dealt with a flat tyre in that section of the competition. Lesley is by her own confession a totally driven character with a strong focus on forward-momentum. Lesley and her husband Simon, a Performance Psychologist, co-wrote a book called ‘The Brave Athlete', designed to help competitors deal with a range of issues, which could compromise their performance on the track or in their social relationships. At a personal level, Lesley is inspired by the unconditional love shown by her parents and the inspirational versatility of the South African runner, Zola Budd. One of Lesley's favourite quotes is this: “Everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.”Today Lesley Paterson has more than half a dozen screenwriter/film production projects on the go. She describes herself unashamedly as a ‘hustler' - but a very hard working hustler. Someone who always wants to be compassionate as well as passionate, inspirational as well as inspired, joyful as well as driven. Here is a multitalented, articulate woman with a unique story to tell. “I was a rugby player and a ballet dancer,” said Lesley Paterson, triathlete and co-screenwriter of the Oscar nominated All Quiet on the Western Front. Dabbling in acting and producing, it wasn't until she met her eventual writing partner Ian Stokell that she felt like screenwriting could be a path to a career in filmmaking. “To be able to act, you have to be able to write and produce your own films,” Stokell tells her. “Well that makes sense,” she says. “So that's when I got into the writing side of things.” Having read the novel in high school, she was intrigued by the idea of adapting the iconic novel. It's remarkable to think of Paterson writing an Oscar-nominated screenplay and training as a triathlete, but it's because she views both as one and the same. “I get up early. I'm an early person. Not everyone is, but we do know that there is a neuroscience of the brain from training.” Paterson, along with her husband Simon Marshall, PhD, have written extensively about these topics in their book, The Brave Athlete. “You have more motivation in the morning,” she says. “There's a part of your brain that processes emotional and physical pain and that tires out later in the day.” If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Recent events – at the time of writing, Russia's unlawful invasion of Ukraine – reinforce that uncertainty is an inherent human condition. Our guest on this episode offers an approach to this reality that is useful. Paula Reid is an adventurer, and more precisely, an adventure psychologist. She has completed a number of epic things like skiing to the South Pole, sailing around the world, and paddling the Mekong river. While we have had many adventurers on the show, I invited Paula to appear because she is a trailblazer in the field of adventure psychology – which is all about using applied psychology and experience to facilitate enduring performance and well-being. “There's this feeling when you feel like you could fly and when you're that fit, when you're that peaked. For me it was always being out in nature, being out on the trails, being connected with the land. And when you can't do that because you're in continual chronic pain—that was a travesty. That's the piece of me that is my soul and the reason I do this, so when you take away all of that, you're left feeling so desperate.” Some injuries have a clear treatment plan and a defined timeline for recovery. Others are much more difficult to decipher, and leave athletes wondering what to do and when they'll be back training and competing again. In her 15 years as a professional triathlete, Lesley Paterson has encountered essentially every type of setback—often going from, as she puts it, “superhero status” to struggling with daily functions like sitting and driving. In this week's episode, she talks us through how she's coped with all of them, most significantly a chronic high hamstring/lower back/piriformis problem that's affected her for nearly a decade. When she's down for the count, Lesley—who now competes in XTERRA, or off-road triathlon—has learned how to redirect her considerable energy into her rehab and recovery. But that alone isn't enough, the five-time world champion points out. Athletes also need to find a way to connect with another source of joy. Her other passion is filmmaking, but it could be a hobby, relationship, or any other pursuit that keeps you moving forward when times are tough, she says. In this conversation, we talk about everything from: - why Lesley initially retired from sport at the age of 20 due to her disillusionment and frustration and this lead her and Simon to work together to develop this model, - how your brain works (and is wired to work), - Lesley’s experience dealing with the Imposter Complex/Syndrome, - why it’s important to understand your athletic identity and how that can cause you to feel like an Imposter, - why an alter ego is a powerful tool you can use to change the actions you take (really, it helps you fake it till you make it — or perhaps more correctly, fake it till you believe it). SETTING GOALS IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM THE SECRET IS DOING Do. Or do not. There is no try. - YODA, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK It turns out that "JUST DO IT" is pretty shitty advice. It might make for a good marketing tag line and it's certainly one of the most commonly shrieked instructions from exasperated coaches, parents, and teachers, but the scientific reality is that this call to action is almost always ineffective. In fact, some evidence suggests that it can actually undermine motivation, confidence, and enjoyment. The sentiment behind just do it is perfectly well intentioned - stop overthinking it, stop talking about it, stop procrastinating, and stop forcing me to keep asking you to take action. We must turn our thoughts, ideas, and goals into action. A goal: An aim or action usually with a specific time limit. So having a specific timeline is important for goal setting. SMART goal (Specific, Measureable, Achievable/Adjustable, Realistic, Time (time-dependent)) Why athletes benefit from setting goals: Increase performance – goals give focus and directs efforts. Performance can increase when goals have been set Increase positive thoughts – athlete sees himself make progress towards a goal, he/she is likey to have positive reactions Increase confidence – as challenging and realistic goals are completed, helps create stronger beliefs that the athlete/performer can cont to move forward Types of goals in sport psychology: Outcome goals: goals related to the desired result of a competition (i.e., winning the game) Athlete has not control over this Performance goal: refers to athletes performance in relation to previous performance (i.e., improving free-throw shot from 70% to 80%Athlete has more so control over this Process goals: how an athlete performs a particular skill. These goals usually focus on practice or training (i.e., a batter keeping his eye on the ball) Under athletes control So basically it’s important for athletes to essentially focus on process and performance goals because these are under their control. Ultimately focusing on these goals gets them to the outcome goal. -- The brave athlete Saying just do it is pretty silly advice or as the Brave Athlete books states, in ch. 4 “Setting goals is not your problem,” it’s pretty shitty advice. The just do it can be a challenge and can undermine motivation. Most things in life, it’s easy to know what to do but to actually do it is the hard part! The best way to mobilize the what, how, and do is goal setting! Most folks have an understanding of the important of goal setting – given that we are all human and carry a brain we are wired to be goal oriented. For example, our brain naturally gives us basic goals to accomplish like stay alive, eat, sleep. References Cheadle, C. (2017). Week 4 goal setting [PowerPoint slides]. Chuck explains that the book deals with how the brain answers unwanted thoughts and feelings and what you can do about those. Dana shares her biggest takeaway and that is understanding her chimp, Elsa. Dana goes into the idea that the brain has three main parts, the chimp, the professor, and the computer. Chuck and Dana then go into Dana's power animal or race persona, Lagertha.Chuck then begins talking about the second third of the book, the section on obstacles, setbacks, and conflict. Dana shares how she and her colleagues identify the conflict at work and how they have used the chimp idea to deconflict emotional conflict or rational conflict. They then go further into a discussion about the three portions and how they interact. Noting that the chimp is more powerful than the professor and typically wins. Dana and Chuck then discuss how to get her out of her comfort zone for mass start track races using a technique in the book. The two wrap up the discussion.

It's high time to dig into another one of the dog-eared books on my shelf - one of those titles that I folded over, highlighted and scribbled in profusely. The book, entitled, "", claims to solve the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. It's based on the idea that you don’t have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that’s when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don’t want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? According to today's podcast guests and the authors of the book - Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson - you can indeed take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport. Dr. Simon Marshall trains the brains of endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts to become happier and more mentally tough. He is former Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and Professor of Exercise Science at San Diego State University where he was Director of the Graduate Program in Sport & Exercise Psychology. He has published over 100 scientific articles on the psychology of exercise and has been cited in the scientific literature over 10,000 times. He has served as invited expert on exercise science for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society. He is currently the Performance Psychologist for the BMC Racing team, an elite WorldTour professional cycling team. As the sherpa-husband of professional triathlete Lesley Paterson, he is the founding member of Team S.H.I.T. (Supportive Husbands in Training), and competes in triathlon or cycling events as the husband of Lesley Paterson. Lesley Paterson is a professional mountain biker, 3-time world champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman® triathlon champion, endurance coach, and foul-mouthed Scots lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl on an all-boys rugby team, which is where she nurtured her love of dirt and dirty words. Banned from the team when puberty struck, she took up cross-country running and triathlon and was soon winning national titles and competing internationally. Lesley founded Braveheart Coaching to train and inspire endurance athletes to compete with passion, toughness, and an unwavering “Braveheart” spirit in overcoming obstacles. Paterson is a trained actress, a screenwriter, and personal trainer to Hollywood actors. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What made Simon and Lesley work on this book together as a dual process...8:45 -What an athletic identity is, and how to form a strong one...12:45 -How to use a self-schema process to build your identity and avoid a damaging "identity mismatch"...20:45 -Why an alter-ego for yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do to form an athletic identity...38:00 -Why rituals seem less and less common in an era of "holding your smartphone for a selfie" before the race...42:30 -Simon and Lesley's best of the best advice for getting through an injury...50:45 -Simon and Lesley's tips for getting outside your comfort zones...1:01:45 -A thumb tapping exercise for increasing your tolerance to pain and getting outside your comfort zone...1:10:15 -And much more! You have three brains; your ancient Chimp brain (keeps you alive), your modern Professor brain (navigates the civilized world), and your Computer brain (accesses memories and runs your habits, both good and bad. They fight for control all the time; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. Feeling unworthy of being called an athlete (runner, triathlete, cyclist) is referred to as cognitive distortion, but can also work both ways. Being overconfident can be as damaging as being under confident. How does each happen? Drawing from the book "The Brave Athlete" by Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson (https://www.velopress.com/books/the-brave-athlete/), a book recently recommended to John by Beth Shaw after reading of his ongoing anxiety about the open water swim, the guys talk about these and some of the points made in the book. Well, at least the first 1/3 of the book.
Lesley Paterson, aka the "Scottish Rocket," is a three-time world champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman triathlon champ, a professional mountain biker, an athletic coach, and a world-class slinger of profanity. Together, Lesley and Simon comprise Braveheart Coaching, a service that gets athletes performing to their potential in spite of the "3-pound lump of crazy" that lives in their cranium.

What a treat! In this episode, Coach Dave is joined by Triathlete Pro Lesley Paterson (@lesleydoestri) and her husband, the uber-brilliant Dr. Simon Marshall (@pssjm3). They discuss Dr. Simon and Lesley's new book, The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion. It's an incredible sports psychology book that helps athletes understand how your brain can be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you have ever said any or all of the following, this book is for you: I wish I felt more like an athlete. I feel fat. When the going gets tough, the tough leave me behind. I don't think I can. I don't cope well with injury. I need to harden the f*ck up. Setting goals is not my problem, acting on them is. People say that I am dependent on exercise or have an addiction. I keep screwing up my races because I lack focus. Other athletes are just tougher, happier, or more bad ass than I am. I don't feel like leaving my comfort zone or pushing myself. I don't handle pressure well. I get overly stressed and anxious the closer I get to race day. Abs and a$$-whooping. Lesley Paterson is a three-time world champion triathlete, professional mountain biker, coach, motivational speaker, reluctant fitness model and foul-mouthed Scotts lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl on the rugby team - when she was banned from playing with the boys with the arrival of boobs, she went after running and triathlon. Lesley went on to become a national champion in cross country and an international triathlete. With her husband, Dr. Simon Marshall, an international expert in mental toughness and exercise behavior change, Lesley owns Braveheart Coaching, a San Diego based company that trains endurance athletes to be faster and happier. Lesley's athletic journey is one of passion, grit, toughness and an unwavering 'Braveheart' spirit in overcoming obstacles. Lesley uses her on-camera training, media-ready personality, and accent to create meaningful as well as "entirely useless" content for endurance athletes (her words). :) Enjoy!
