Questions have been raised over a three-week mission to locate and re-home three native skinks, at a cost of $85,000. It involved clearing vegetation along State Highway Three near New Plymouth - and releasing one copper skink and two gold striped geckos at Everett Park Scenic Reserve. Auckland University conservation biologist James Russell says the money spent was a fraction of the total costs of work on the highway. He explained New Zealand is extremely bio-diverse - and gold-striped geckos are incredibly rare. "It's just another species where we don't know what's happening - and if we don't look, it'll just disappear and be another blot on our record." Well this description was clearly written by AI... In today's episode of The Clint, Meghan, Dan Podcast, the trio dives into a series of hilarious and unexpected segments. They kick off with some light-hearted banter about April Fools' Day and share funny pranks that have happened over the years. Clint and Dan then prank Meg by creating a fake studio walkout, which leaves Meg genuinely flustered. Amidst all the chaos, Dan tries various aphrodisiac foods to scientifically test their effects on his mood and physiology, with unexpected and entertaining results. The show also includes segments on Black Mirror's upcoming season, an apple tasting test, and listeners sharing their awkward open home stories. 00:00 Good morning!00:45 April Fool's Day Pranks02:16 Morning Greetings and Jokes05:12 Compliments and Nicknames08:37 Midwife Stories12:20 Miley Cyrus' New Song16:25 Skinks and Riddles20:17 Pet Psychic Segment24:51 Cash Giveaway29:13 Aphrodisiacs and Intimacy35:24 Rekindling the Spark35:50 Anonymous Caller Jade36:48 Foods for Intimacy38:26 How you like dem Apples 41:44 Open Home Stories52:39 April Fools' Prank01:08:59 Aphrodisiac Experiment Results

Skinks are one of the most diverse families of lizards, and Ishan Agarwal studies skinks in India, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. From the forest to the lab to the museum, Ishan shares his experiences investigating a group of cryptic skinks that had quite a few surprises to share, including biology and behavior. What is it about skinks that makes them so captivating? How and why do scientists designate neotypes? Why is a slingshot part of a skink-catching field kit? Three protected native Geckos have been returned to the wild after illegally being kept in captivity for years with tens of other lizards and skinks. Manawatu man, Richard Brosnan has been fined 7,000 for keeping 63 geckos and skinks from 11 species, which is forbidden under the Wildlife Act. He'd previously had a permit to keep skinks but that expired in 2016. The extent of his menagerie was revealed after DOC launched an investigation last year. Unfortunately, many of the lizards can't be released back into their habitat. DOC's principal investigations officer, Matt Davis speaks to Lisa Owen. Welcome to the Outer Fringes where we explore reptiles out there that are as cool as chameleons! In our old Auckland garden we used be surrounded by so-called rainbow skinks. They were everywhere and… what a cool name! The best way to describe them: a small grey-brown skink with a dark brown, lateral stripe along the body. When they are sun bathing it is easy to find a spectacular rainbow-coloured sheen on their scales. I quickly learned these fascinating and quite pretty animals are actually Australian interlopers, arriving here in the 1960s. Common in the North Island, especially in the northern half: Northland to Waikato with populations in New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay, Whanganui, Palmerston North and Wellington. There are a few records from Blenheim too. I was hoping they were not in the South Island – but they are… They can easily live here too – In Tasmania they're well-established. Impact: They are numerous and aggressive; accused of eating our native invertebrates and ousting our timid native skink species through competition for space, habitat and food. Our native skinks are already under pressure from cats and stoats and weasels, so this exotic Aussie skink is likely to add some more pressure. They are classed as “invasive”, here in New Zealand and if we look at their track record in Hawaii (established there since early 1900s), I would not be surprised if these skinks are having an impact on our herpetological fauna and perhaps other delicate ecological balances. Isn't it ironic that this skink's scientific name is Lampropholis delicata? Scientists and Biosecurity creatives have re-named that “rainbow skink” to “plague skink”; Our best approach is to be aware of them and learn to tell them apart from our native skinks Identifying them from native species is not that easy: you've got to look at them up-close and focus on the top of their head; Right in the centre of the head – right on top and between the eyes – is a large diamond-shaped scale. That is the plague/rainbow skink. If that large scale is divided into two smaller scales, you're looking at a Native species. Once you know what to look for, you can't really miss the interloper. And then there are the creamy white eggs. You often find these 8 mm eggs in clusters in the soil or underneath rocks. Apart from one rather rare native species of skink (Oligosoma suteri), the Plague Skink is the only one that lays eggs. If you're sure you can tell them apart, try catching and dispatching them. Please don't think they are great “pets” for your kids or grand kids, because they are not! And be aware they are masters at hiding in your luggage when you are travelling. That way they spread themselves all over the place. Once again, the concept of Biosecurity sneaks back into the garden!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Van Badham and Ben Davison discuss what the latest inflation figures might mean for working people when the high priests of neo-liberal monetary policy at the Reserve Bank meet again. Van and Ben discuss how the bosses lobby groups think they can argue the RBA needs to raise interest rates to create more unemployment but also not that the Fair Work Commission shouldn't raise minimum wages because it would cause unemployment. Ultimately they're just fronting for more profits. Which is why unions are arguing for a wage rise that keeps up with the cost of living. You can join you unions at australianunions.org.au/wow As well as calling for wage rises the President of the ACTU, Michele O'Neil, gave a national press club speech this week calling for the establishment of a Just Transition Authority. Van and Ben discuss why Australia needs coordinated action on climate change and how, without such a tri-partite body, it isn't anyone's job to make sure that the economic transition is just, equitable or orderly. Saturday is the first by-election since the 2022 federal election with Labor's Mary Doyle up against the Liberal Roshena from Brunswick in the seat of Aston (which is about an hours tram & bus ride from Brunswick). Today's revelations about the Liberal candidate's policy hypocrisy have people thinking Labor is in with a chance, even though it would be a historic victory for a sitting government to win a seat from the opposition at a by-election. Of course, Van and Ben couldn't ignore the behaviour of six member's of Peter Dutton's caucus, including three members of his front bench, who injured a parliament house worker while trying to avoid casting their votes in the house of representatives. Ben and Van discuss why this sort of thing has happened, how it not only breaks parliamentary rules but also the fundamental rule; No worker should ever be injured at work. The podcast does have some good news about the Desert Skink which Ben explains after Van acknowledges our Cadre and Extend the Reach supporters who are chipping in monthly contributions via www.buymeacoffee.com/weekonwednesday

Join GJ as he explores these and other pressing matters (or, to use the technical term, ramblings) while talking about the evolution of the Stegadon from 5th-8th edition.

Skinks are often overlooked, even unknown, (even as I write this, spell-check doesn't even recognize “Skink” as a word) but there are over 1,500 species of them on the planet. That makes them the most diverse family of lizards. https://thewildlife.blog/2018/04/15/ask-twl-the-little-brown-skink/ (Transcript)
Fire Skinks are one of those nostalgic species that never really seemed to catch on. They're beautiful, hardy and a great size. As it turns out, they've also got tons of personality and a handful of beautiful morphs! Richard's collection and breeding success are both very impressive. I can't wait to see what he does going forward!

Shut the door. I know first hand what happens when you leave the door open. I was running late, which I do more often than I should. I had to load the car, feed the dog, put my shoes on (Yes, I was barefooted which makes this story even worse.), and then I would be ready to go. I was in a hurry to get gone, so I left the front door open as I loaded the car. I didn’t know that someone’s pet was on the loose or I never would have left it open. As I lowered my heavy box into and all the way to the back of the trunk, a little dog scampered over to check me out, barking and wagging his tail. The frisky visitor frightened a skink in the flowerbed. The skink both frightened and intrigued my visitor, so the chase was on with the skink running and the dog chasing. Any other day I would have enjoyed watching the pursuit, but I was in a hurry—no time to stop. Then suddenly this chase took an unexpected turn— inside my house they went. The skink was running for his life and the dog was chasing it because that’s what dogs do. I followed the dog, as he ran through the house barkly wildly at the skink. My dog was on the back porch was really upset; he was going mad out there. He seemed to be saying, “What’s that dog doing in my house? You don’t let me in there!” Any other day it would have been hilarious, but not as late as I was. I wasn’t laughing. I was too out of breathe chasing the dog, chasing the skink, running for his life to laugh. It was the perfect plot for a Dr. Seus book. It took me a few minutes to get the dog out, but where was the skink? I searched everywhere, but the fat, purple monster alluded me. I grabbed another box and shut the door behind me, that’s right, now that the skink was inside my house. I loaded another box in the car, came back inside to looked for the skink again. No luck so I loaded the next box.I searched every room in the house again. I carefully looked for the skink, carefully because I didn’t want that thing to jump on me. Honestly, I don’t know what I would have done with it if I had found it. I couldn’t leave it in the house, but I had to leave it. Wayne would just have to find it when he got home from work! Sorry baby, it comes with being married to me…didn’t you know “Skink Chasing” was one of the requirements on your marriage license? But I learned something, something I already knew, but I didn’t practice that day…shut the door! You never know what might be in the yard. Skinks are definitely not on my invitation lists for house guests. Why did I leave the door open? Convenience. Apathy. What could it hurt? I never dreamed that anything would go inside in the few minutes it would take me to load the car! It had never been a problem before. But do we give the same diligence to our heart? Proverbs 4:23 NIV Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Let's look at the Good News Translation "Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts." Wayne's Cajun costumed character used to ask the kids in Children's Church, "How many doors be here? To their answer of two, he would reply. "No, there be three doors in this room. There be the front door, the back door and Isadore." You have three doors. You can't afford to miss a door or live as if there were no doors to your heart. Your senses are doors that shape your heart and beliefs. Eyes. What you see is a door to your heart. Ears. What you ear is a door to your heart. How you process the data you receive affects your heart. You want to give beautiful things access to your heart. They bring the light of happiness inside. Laughter, music, good conversation and reading wonderful books shape your beliefs.. But don't forget that your thoughts or how you process that data is your third door. It matters! It is dangerous to think that what you see, hear and process does not affect you...it does. So be careful. When you don't shut the door to the wrong influences your give fear access to your life. As innocent as Halloween may appear it can give fear an access. Don't let the fun numb the wisdom of watchfulness. I'm not against fun costumes or even the candy treats, yet there is a foul spirit of fear from hell that is always looking for opportunities to deceive people. Be alert. Be watchful. Fear can grip you. I'm sure I don't have to tell you about fear...you've felt it, but just incase life has numbed you I want to remind you. Fear is a heavy weight Proverbs 12:25 NIV Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. I love Zach Williams Fear is a Liar song. (Here's the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1srs1YoTVzs Zach) Fear is a haughty, loud liar that backs you into a corner and immobilizes you. Fear loves to smash dreams then it points back with accusations that blame and shame you when those dreams don't happen. Fear sucks the life out of your faith, steals your hope and destroys your influence. Fear is a greedy thief. Fear will vandalize your heart and carry off everything precious including your health. You don't want a skink or a snake in your house, so why would you allow a predator that will take more than either of them inside your house? You don't need a fancier door; or a stronger door; a bigger door-- you just need to shut the door you have! Pay attention. There are reasons that God's people have so much fear in their lives; one of which they simply don't shut the door. Ephesians 4:27 NIV and do not give the devil a foothold. I think the International Standard Version makes this verse even clearer. and do not give the devil an opportunity to work. Romans 8:15 NIV The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." That's important. God's Spirit doesn't make you a slave; instead His gift of salvation makes you a child of the King of kings. Let's look at that verse in the BSB "For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"" God doesn't want a single one of his children in slavery to fear. yet I see so much fear even in believers. Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery. Jesus set you free so you can live free... but you can return to fear. encumbered, hindered, bound by a yoke of slavery. You don't have to return to fear... you can choose differently. Proverbs 4:23 says guard your heart, but Phil 4:7 shares one more layer of protection Phil 4:7 BSB And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Not just any peace...it's God peace. Phil 4:7 CEV says "Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel." Don't miss this...Peace gets to control what you allow the doors of your senses. It get to control what you think about. God peace gets the remote control to your thoughts, your TV, your Netflix selections. Listen when He says, "Don't watch that." Then don't watch it. Don't take part in a conversation, when you hear Him say "Shhhh!" It's not a diet...It's a way of life. Sometimes when we discover a truth we do it for a little while and then go back to life as normal...sorta like we do with diets. Shutting the door on fear must be a way of life. Even as I was studying this subject I had a thought grip my mind and I had to shake it off. Know for certain that you do NOT have to be consumed or beat down by fear. God wants you to walk and live in peace. But you have a role to play in whether you have peace or fear. So shut the door..."Fear, It's your turn to hear...cause you're not gonna stay here! You have to go in Jesus Holy name."

Our excruciating all-summer-long review of High Feather continues! In High Feather episode 4, the kids publish the camp newspaper (using incredible technology like mimeograph machines and typewriters), and we learn a goofy apple-picking song too. (How did this show not sweep the Emmy Awards?) It's also National Gummy Worm Day, which makes us ponder the existence of gummy skinks (because creepy lizards just make everything better). And we review the list of celebrity contestants on the new Battle of the Network Stars, a revival of the classic (and ridiculous) Howard Cosell-hosted show from the 70s and 80s. The new show promises to be ridiculous too, but the players include Greg Brady, Danny Partridge, Daisy Duke, the Incredible Hulk, Isaac the Bartender, Electra Woman, and a couple of Facts of Life girls. So yeah, they have our attention, even if this is seriously cutting into our High Feather time. Next week: We'll be back from CONvergence! Hopefully!
SPECIAL GUEST: JULIA RILEY (MQ) Reptiles are not usually considered the friendliest of animals, nor are they generally considered ‘social’ animals in the same way mammals and insects are. But recent research is showing us that we have underestimated our cold-blooded companions, and that lizards can form complex social networks. Julia Riley from Macquarie University talks about her PhD research on Egernia skinks and the social groups that they live in. We meet her dog Dundee and chat about how a childhood fear of snakes gradually morphed into a fiery passion for all things herpetological! Along the way we get a tour of Julia’s house and garden and find all sorts of shenanigans along the way.
