Mike's guest this episode of Hitting Left is poet, novelist, journalist, critic, and columnist, Luis Rodriguez. Luis was the 2014 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. He is recognized as a major figure in contemporary Chicano literature identifying himself as a native Xicanx writer. His best-known work, Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A., received the Carl Sandburg Literary Award and has been controversial on school reading lists for its depictions of gang life.   Joining Luis in the Lumpen Radio studio is Mike's daughter, Amanda Klonsky. Amanda is an educator and prison rights activist who has worked with Luis on prison reform.

Mila La Morena is a fusion of r&b, Latin, and alternative. She incorporates all the genres she grew up with to tell her story of being Latine in the US, with heartbreak, and queerness. They have been performing in Chicago since 2018 and songwriting since the age of 5. Not to mention she has the best fits on the gram!

Los Skins is a chicane punk band from the south/west side of Chicago. They play all sounds from punk to cumbia, and take lots of influence from their roots and where they come from. Did we mention their drummer is only 14 years old!?

And this year it's a reunion, featuring all the students of the YSYW Class and Sonic Vibez! Santa & company are visiting the students at Yollocalli to see if they are worthy of meeting her and going through any previous encounters they may have had with her in the past. Hopefully, some of these students can go through some of their holiday traditions, music, movies and teach us a little bit about Christmas!

We're talking about small businesses, safety, public transportation, and of course, asking “what is a walkable city?”
