B. Cox reviews Common's classic sixth album Be as it turns 20. In light of the commercial failure and mixed critical reviews, Common found some common ground in aligning with fellow Chicago hip-hop royalty Kanye West and his GOOD Music imprint on Geffen Record. A former pupil of No. ID, who produced the majority of Common's second and third albums (Resurrection and One Day It'll All Make Sense, respectively), West proved to be a good match to get Common back on tracks and back to his hip-hop roots in the Windy City.Largely solely produced by West (with minor assists from J. Dilla, James Poyser and Karriem Riggins), Common showcased in depth lyricism marked by poignant stories about life in Chicago and themes of the streets, love, feminism, ambition and knowledge of self. Joined by collaborators such as The Last Poets, John Mayer along with label mate John Legend and West himself, the album was a well layered effort that served towards Common's strengths. The album featured many singles, highlighted by "The Corner", "Go!" and "Testify". The album was Common's 2nd album to be certified gold and is often thought to be his "comeback album". It is also regarded along with Like Water For Chocolate as his best work.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesOkayPlayer: Common's 'Be' Getting 20th Anniversary Re-Release with 11 New Trackshttps://www.okayplayer.com/common-be-20th-anniversarySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

B. Cox returns with a look back at Common's landmark fourth album, Like Water For Chocolate as it turns 25.After his breakthrough sophomore album 1994's Resurrection and his acclaimed third album 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense, the Chicago emcee picked up his roots and moved to New York City and linked up with Questlove, The Roots and other creatives who were working within the Electric Lady Studios. There he collaborated with the aforementioned, D'Angelo, super producer DJ Premier, musicians such as keyboardist James Poyser, famed bass player Pino Palladino and horn legend Roy Hargrove among others. The catalyst for this collaboration, however, came from producer Jay Dee (bka J Dilla) who produced the lion's share of the album's tracks. The album was widely acclaimed up on release. It is has been RIAA certified gold and is considered along with 2005's BE as is his best work.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Common's "Like Water For Chocolate" Turns 25 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/common-like-water-for-chocolate-album-anniversary#google_vignetteStereogum: 'Like Water For Chocolate' Turns 20https://www.stereogum.com/2077724/common-like-water-for-chocolate-review/reviews/the-anniversary/Grammy | Q&A: Common Tells Stories Behind 'Like Water For Chocolate'https://www.grammy.com/news/qa-common-tells-stories-behind-water-chocolate-its-20th-anniversarySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Gregory "Hutch" Hutchinson is one of the most highly regarded and highly recorded jazz drummers on the planet. Part of what makes him so special is that he sits at the crossroads of the old school and the new school. He was mentored by old jazz masters like Red Rodney, Ray Brown and Betty Carter. He worked extensively with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove, among many other innovative jazz musicians of his generation. He has also collaborated with the likes of Common, Karriem Riggins and James Poyser, all practitioners of a new school rhythm approach, influenced by pioneering producer J Dilla.  Hutch is able to summon the spirit authentically from both sides because both are part of his personal truth. But until now he has not been a recording artist. Now, at 53 years of age, after having played with everybody, he is releasing his debut solo record Da Bang, and it is not necessarily what one might have expected. Rooted in the jazz tradition, the album demonstrates Hutchinson's versatility, dynamism, and imagination. It may be unexpected, but as Hutch will tell you, it's coming straight from the heart, and the songs are as much a reflection of the way he feels as they are of the way he plays. Here he talks about growing up in Brooklyn, playing drums as a boy, his mentors, the importance of personal style and of friendship among musicians, his next phase (“this is Hutch 3.0”) and his favorite drummers. He casually invokes so many names that talking to Hutch is like a master class in the music, and you can feel how important it is to him to recognize the contributions of those who came before him, and to place his own contribution within that context. B Cox reviews Lauryn Hill's classic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as turns 25. After a a breakout classic album The Score with The Fugees and a worldwide successful tour, the singer-emcee found herself at a crossroads as she found herself not only in a new relationship with Rohan Marley, but also pregnant. During pregnancy, she took a hiatus from touring and recording and spent time writing for what would be her debut album. After giving birth to her son Zion, she began the process of putting together her album with musicians, vocalists and producers at work to help craft her vision. The album was recored partially in New York, with the rest of the album being recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at Tuff Gong studios.Utilizing all of her talents, Hill presented the world with her version of her vision, an hour plus opus that covered all of her talents and passions: emceeing, singing, writing and producing. The fusion of sounds of hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul and reggae made for a unicorn of an album. Her themes touched on love, heartbreak, disappointment, confusion and exultation around relationships. Joining her on this album would be the company of fellow legends: guitarist Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, D'Angelo as well as featured artists and musicians and producers such as Che "Che Guevera" Pope, James Poyser, "Commissioner" Gordon Williams and John Legend among others. The album featured up to six singles which became staples of the album: "Lost Ones", "Ex-Factor", "Doo Wap (That Thing)", "Everything Is Everything", "Nothing Even Matters", "For Zion". The album was an immediate commercial and critical success, becoming multiple platinum by the end of the millennium and winning five Grammys at the 1999 Grammy Awards. It is now RIAA-certified diamond and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. While it remains her only studio album, it continues to reverberate today with its legacy and it often sighted on many lists as one of the greatest music albums of all-time.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Lauryn Hill's debut album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" Turns 25 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/lauryn-hill-debut-solo-album-the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill-album-anniversaryThe Grio: The Gospel According To Lauryn Hillhttps://thegrio.com/2023/08/25/the-gospel-according-to-lauryn-how-the-scriptures-influenced-the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill/The Root: The Evolution of Lauryn Hillhttps://www.theroot.com/the-evolution-of-lauryn-hill-1850768001EuroNews: How Lauryn Hill Revolutionized Hip-Hop 25 Years Agohttps://www.euronews.com/culture/2023/08/25/culture-re-view-how-lauryn-hill-revolutionised-hip-hop-25-years-agoBET: 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" Turns 25https://www.bet.com/article/7uq9da/the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill-turns-25-how-a-classic-debut-galvanized-a-generation-of-black-women-and-changed-hip-hopSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Not even two years after his wildly successful debut album Aijuswanaseing was released, the Philadelphia soul singer was back at it to eclipse his previous effort. Teaming back up with the likes of producers Carvin & Ivan, Dre & Vidal, James Poyser, Vikter Duplaix and 88-Keys among others, his sophomore debut was jam packed with a variety bag of soulful goodness, featuring Musiq's relatable lyrics and tailor made vocals to match the unique soundtrack. The album opened up #1 on the Billboard 200 and featured two Top 5 R&B chart singles, "Halfcrazy" and "Dontchange". It's credited as further solidifying Musiq as an artist with staying power, who would remain a player through the rest of the decade. For many businesses and independent IT professionals, IR35 was set to dominate this year; the expanded tax legislation was going to crack down on the use of limited companies by contractors in order to exploit tax loopholes, while simultaneously forcing organisations to pay the national insurance contributions of many of its temporary freelancers. The ongoing coronavirus crisis has now kicked those plans into touch, with the enforcement of the new legislation pushed back until next year - but what impact will this delaying have on IT contractors and those that employ them, and how should they be preparing for when it does finally come into force in 2021?In this week's episode of the IT Pro Podcast, Adam and guest host Keumars Afifi-Sabet talk to James Poyser, InniAccounts CEO and founder of IF35 comparison site Offpayroll.org.uk, to find out exactly what the changes mean, and how those affected should respond.Visit bit.ly/ITPP-IR35 for links to everything we've talked about in this week's episode.

For this episode, we delve into the catalogue of jazz trumpeter's off-shoot jazz-funk project, The RH Factor. www.blueingreenradio.com November 2nd 2018 marked the sad passing of trumpeter, composer, band leader - Roy Hargrove. The Texan native, under the initial turorage of Wynton Marsalis, released his first album in 1990 and was just as adept at playing in trios as he was commanding a big band or an orchestra. Signing to the legendary Verve Records in 1994, Hargrove won his first Grammy in 1998 for his Afro-Cuban project 'Habana' but it was his work with contemporary soul and hp-hop artists including D'Angelo ('Voodoo'), Erykah Badu ('Mama's Gun') and Common ('Like Water For Chocolate') that really introduced his work to a new generation. His offshoot project, The RH Factor, inspired by these collaborations say him venture into the world of jazz-funk through the releases 'Hard Groove' (2003), 'Strength' (2004) and 'Distractions' (2006). The projects were brought to life through a wide selection of musicians and vocalists including Renee Neufville, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, Meshell Ndegeocello, D'Angelo, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, Anthony Hamilton, Stephanie McKay, amongst many others. The importance of projects like Hargrove's RH Factor really can't be over-stated: while many can sometimes feel that jazz may not be as accessible as other forms of music, crossover and fusion projects like these do wonders in introducing jazz to a wider audience.

Sy Smith - Soul From The UndergroundHear more shows like this at https://entertalkradio.com/makingitSy Smith has long since solidified her place in the world of underground soul music (she’s often called “the hardest working woman in underground soul”). This Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer helped cultivate the nu-soul scene in that city more than 10 years ago, a scene which now easily boasts some of the most progressive artists of that genre to date, some of whom came directly from Smith’s own band line-ups (including Thundercat and Kamasi Washington). Her catalog includes 5 studio albums, with contributions from a who’s who of producers (James Poyser of The Roots, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange). All 5 of her albums, including her brand new project  “Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete” have been heralded by critics around the world for Smith’s lyrical dexterity, her vocal whimsy (often colored with a very distinctive rhythmic swing that’s all her own) and her ability to spin a story like few others in soul music. Listeners often remark on Smith’s vocal range, which moves effortlessly from a speakeasy, gritty alto all the way to a stratospheric soprano whistle register reminiscent of the late Minnie Riperton. Website/Social Media Links:www.sysmith.comfacebook.com/sysmithmusicinstagram.com/syberspaceyoutube.com/sysmith69

Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter Jaguar Wright's name can be added to the list of such Philly-based neo-soul talents as Grammy award-winning rap band The Roots and multi-platinum hitmakers Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild. Wright earned rave reviews for her background vocal stint at Jay-Z' MTV Unplugged appearance during December 2001. Around February 2002, she began appearing in a national TV ad for Coca Cola. Her energetic stage shows garnered favorable write-ups in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone. In a kind of homage to the old-school, Wright covers fellow Philly singer Patti LaBelle's hit "Love, Need and Want You" on her debut album, Denials Delusions and Decisions, which was issued by Motive/MCA on January 29, 2002. With production by members of the Roots, James Poyser, Richard Nichols, Scott Storch, Pino Palladino, Larry Gold, and Vikter Duplaix, the album is a provocative brew of gut-wrenching soul and incisive, life-influenced lyrics. The results spins a "fo' real" autobiographical tint (helped along by salty language on the uncensored version of the album), moving some to drawing comparisons to her contemporary Mary J. Blige and R&B/rap-roots mother Millie Jackson as well as Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. Still, on Denials Delusions and Decisions Wright offers an enticing, unique portrait of a young woman trying to find her way through life, through songs that are mesmerizing whether they're biting or beautiful. Essentially, buttamilk is a concept that started in Philadelphia around 1994 with three fellows named Gene, Kenny, and Marv. They all met working as interns at the classic soul station, WDAS, in Philadelphia. Realizing that we all had a great time together and all had a love for music, especially music that was just under the commercial radio radar, we decided to band together and throw some parties. Kenny would host, Gene would get on the mic, and Marv spun the tunes. Our first event was a house party for Kenny's birthday. We thought that it would be cool and a twist to invite some singers to sing over instrumentals as people moved and grooved...just a slight departure from the "throw your hands in the air like you just don't care," chants, you know? Simplistic and hardly groundbreaking, but to the audience we played to, it was a thrill. People thought they were hearing new versions of tracks because they couldn't see the artists. Sometime after that party, we brainstormed on how to present what we did at that jam, but shed more light, literally, on the artists performing. We wanted to put together a show that would showcase music, singing, and spoken word to working class Philadelphians whose taste were fairly mainstream. We wanted to bring a high level of entertainment with style and intellect to everyday people. But, we needed a name... Buttamilk Two records that Marv always played were Audio Two's "Top Billin" and A Tribe Called Quest "Butter." The Audio Two track had a line "Milk is chillin, what more can I do Top Billin," and the Tribe track featured Phife's hook, "It's like butta...not no parkay, not no margarine, strictly butta." On top of that connection, being the cognitive fellows that we were, we made the correlation: Butter is what you spread to add flavor and stimulate taste, Milk is what you drink for the nourishment you need to grow…Buttamilk! The First Show WDAS, the station where we all worked, has an annual street festival called Unity Day. This event is huge, averaging ½ million people every summer for years. If you wanted to see your R&B/Soul idols like James Brown or the Isley Brothers or Chaka Kahn, Unity Day was it. But beyond the main stage, there were several pavilions and stages. There was a literary pavilion that was perfect for our aims. Throughout the day, the station planned to have writers and poets sign their books and meet and greet. We thought it be a good idea to have some people perform while Marv played his eclectic instrumentals and the station agreed. (Now here’s a flashback to a couple months prior to the big day). Kenny and I went to a friend of his backyard barbeque. Mixing and mingling, we came upon a woman named Jill. We talked about what we were up to and our aspirations and we saw that she seemed really interested. Somehow things segued into an on the spot audition as Jill effortlessly scatted jazz style, the lyrics to Onyx’s “Throw Your Guns In The Air.” Sticky Fingaz’s verse to be exact. We couldn’t believe her voice, her ease, and the way she transformed a rough and tough Hip Hop tune into jazz. If she was down with us, we were down with her performing at our inaugural event several weeks later at the WDAS Unity Day celebration. Unity Day with Jill Scott was where Buttamilk spread its wings into four years of parties and events that would showcase the likes of the Roots, JazzyFatNastees, Ursula Rucker, Wadud, Stephanie Renee, Rich Medina, Sarah Jones, novelist Omar Tyree, James Poyser, Jafar Barron, Dick Gregory, Sonia Sanchez, King Britt, and Nelson George. This Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter/producer helped cultivate the nu-soul scene in that city more than ten years ago, a scene which now easily boasts some of the most progressive artists of that genre to date, some of whom came directly from Sy’s own band line-ups. With 3 albums, 2 EPs, 1 greatest hits collection, and a live DVD already under her belt, Sy is set to release her fourth studio project ‚ Fast And Curious‚ in 2012. Her past projects usually include contributions from numerous producers, including James Poyser, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Dre King, Nicolay, and Ty Macklin. With Fast And Curious‚ the entire production is aptly handled by jazz musician, electronic remixer, and deejay Mark de Clive-Lowe (aka MdCL). Many fans are aware of Sy’s previous work providing supporting vocals for the likes of Meshell NdegeOcello, Usher, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Macy Gray, The Rickey Minor Band (as seen on American Idol for six seasons), and quite notably, Chris Botti (her performance of‚ Look Of Love‚ on his Grammy-nominated live DVD, but Sy continues to gain new fans in the trenches of the underground scene touring with acts like The Foreign Exchange and Orgone. And even more recently, she’s teamed up with Sheila E. and the Escovedo Family, providing them with her well-known supportive vocals and vibrant energy. Sy has been a featured guest and/or co-star on The Monique Show, The Tonight Show, DC’s Fox Morning News, Chicago’s WGN Midday Show, and even on CBS’ HowI Met Your Mother. She was a special guest performer at Constitution Hall for the Horatio Algers Awards with a full orchestra mass choir backing her as she awed the audience with stunning gowns and a level of extravaganza that had yet been unseen in that annual gala.
