The author of "Blood and Faith: The Purging of Muslim Spain, 1492 to 1614," delves into the complex history of Muslim Spain, starting from the arrival of Muslims in Spain in 711 under a North African general, the formation of al-Andalus, and its eventual decline. Matthew Carr explains how the Spanish Christians perceived the conquest of Granada in 1492 as a divine and final victory, leading to the expulsion of Jews and Muslims. The discussion highlights the forced conversions, the life of the Moriscos (converted Muslims) under Christian rule, and the extreme measures taken by the Spanish Inquisition to ensure religious uniformity. Carr also reflects on the modern parallels of ethnic cleansing in Palestine and societal intolerance, linking historical events to contemporary issues.00:00 Introduction: The Concept of Blood and Faith01:10 Historical Context: Muslim Arrival in Spain02:24 The Fall of Granada and Its Aftermath03:37 Carr's Inspiration for Writing the Book03:59 The Moriscos: A Forgotten History05:20 The Expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain18:49 The Concept of Purity of Blood22:54 The Fall of Granada: A Religious and Political Triumph31:07 The Aftermath of 1492: Forced Conversions and Rebellions34:15 Forced Conversions in Spain34:50 Muslim Workers in Valencia37:48 Christian Intolerance and Inquisition40:38 Cultural Resistance and Rebellion45:27 The Expulsion of the Moriscos54:32 Historical Reflections and Modern ParallelsMatthew Carr is a writer, journalist, and author of several books of nonfiction, including Blood and Faith :The Purging of Muslim Spain. Mark Mazover'in “Selanik”i ve Barbara Jelavich'in iki ciltlik “Balkan Tarihi” keza gözden kaçırılmaması gereken kitaplar. Mağrib-Endülüs: Prof. Dr. İsmail Ceran'ın “Fas Tarihi”, Lucette Valensi imzalı “Avrupa'da Müslümanlar” ve Matthew Carr'ın “Kan ve İman”ıyla birlikte okunmalı. Bunlara bir de Maria Rosa Menocal'in ölümsüz eseri “Dünyanın İncisi Endülüs”, Hugh Kennedy'nin “Endülüs - Müslüman İspanya ve Portekiz'in Siyasî Tarihi” ve Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özdemir'in artık klasik bir başvuru kaynağına dönüşen “Endülüs” adlı kitabı eklenirse tamamdır. Afrika: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kavas'ın “Geçmişten Günümüze Afrika” adlı kitabı, sıkı bir başlangıç için ideal. Dr. Murat Yiğit'in yakın dönemde yayınlanan “Afrika'da Askeri Darbeler ve Dış Müdahale” adlı hacimli çalışması, dikkat çekici detaylar sunuyor. Afrika deyince elbette İmam Abdullah Harun'dan vazgeçemeyiz:

A centuries-old story with remarkable contemporary resonance, Blood and Faith: The Purging of Muslim Spain, 1492-1614 (Hurst, 2017) is celebrated journalist Matthew Carr's riveting and "richly detailed" (Choice) chronicle of what was, by 1614, the largest act of ethnic cleansing in European history. Months after King Philip III of Spain signed an edict in 1609 denouncing the Muslim inhabitants of Spain as heretics, traitors, and apostates, the entire Muslim population of Spain was given three days to leave Spanish territory, on threat of death. In the brutal and traumatic exodus that followed, entire families and communities were forced to abandon homes and villages where they had lived for generations, leaving their property in the hands of their Christian neighbors. By 1613, an estimated 300,000 Muslims had been removed from Spanish territory. Blood and Faith presents a remarkable window onto a little known period of modern Europe--a complex tale of competing faiths and beliefs, cultural oppression, and resistance against over-whelming odds that sheds new light on national identity and Islam. He is an award-winning cybersecurity researcher and penetration tester specializing in cyber threat management. He held senior positions in security at IKEA, IBM, and SecureLink, where he built a strong base of real-world experience. What You Will LearnThe Rising Number of Cyber Attacks on Private Equity Best Practices and Why All PE Firms Need to Build a Cybersecurity CultureCommon and Emerging Cyber Threats Currently Plaguing PE Firms Breakdown[00:45] Getting to Know Matthew Carr [02:13] Common Mistakes by PE Firms and Their Portfolio Companies [04:19] Types of Cyber Attacks Targeting PE Firms[07:51] Cybersecurity Threats and Vulnerabilities in Private Equity[11:22] How PE Firms can Build and Implement a Cybersecurity Culture[15:00] Easy Ways to Improve a PE Firm's Cybersecurity[19:26] Take This One Action Step to Protect Yourself Against Cyber Threats[22:45] Reasons Why Cybersecurity Awareness Training is Important[27:15] Matthew's Go-to Self-Improvement Resources[28:52] Parting ThoughtCommon Cybersecurity Attacks in Private Equity Although cybersecurity is a big concern in almost all industries, cyber attacks on PE firms have increased in recent years. Interestingly, the threats are not only a problem for firms with deep pockets but extend even to small upcoming companies. For a PE firm, data breaches can have business-ending consequences. For example, they spook investors, negatively impact valuations, and damage a firm's reputation. According to Matthew, these are some of the most common ways hackers target PE firms.●        Social Engineering - This is the simplest and most common attack in PE right now. Attackers use psychological manipulation to gain access to confidential information or resources.●        Known Vulnerabilities - Expert attackers leverage known vulnerabilities in a system to gain access to a PE firm's data. A typical loophole is outdated systems. Matthew explains that using outdated software presents numerous security vulnerabilities that put your data and business at risk.●        Zero-Day Vectors - Zero-day attacks stem from an operating system or computer software flaw unknown to the software's publisher. The term "Zero-day" is scary because it is unknown, and there is no patch or antivirus for this vulnerability.●        Zero-Click Attacks - These attacks are fully remote and provide access to a victim's data in real time and without any action from the target. Zero-click attacks are dangerous because they can take place without the victim clicking on a malicious website or app.Other Media ReferencesAtomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear The Slight Edge by Jeff OlsonHow to Contact MatthewAtumcell.comMatthew's LinkedIn Matthew's email address - M@atumcell.com

Why do we need natural gas? Natural gas is used to generate electricity and make fertilisers. It is also converted into CNG which is used to run automobiles. It is converted to LNG and is imported by countries to meet their energy requirements. So natural gas is as essential as oil. Why is it in short supply? Russia was the largest exporter of natural gas in 2021. But its invasion of Ukraine changed the equations, and plunged Europe into an energy crisis. And the effect of Europe's energy crisis is slowly being felt in India too. It is threatening to derail its gas economy. Russia used to supply 40% of Europe's gas requirement before the Ukraine invasion, but it came down to 9%. Gas supplies to Germany were also hit as Russia cited Nord Stream 1 maintenance. The pipe, which runs under the Baltic Sea, is Germany's gas supply backbone and accounts for over one-third of Europe's gas supplies. This means that Europe is looking to get gas from other sources, which leaves very little for Asia. For instance, Russian gas producer Gazprom's supply to India has been dwindling since the start of the war. Europe is now expecting 90% more LNG on the spot market than they have secured under long-term contracts. Compared with last winter, European LNG imports are expected to be up 16%. So the spot LNG prices have soared and hit price-sensitive emerging markets badly. European gas futures are more than four times the price a year ago, according to ICE data. Europe's TTF gas futures benchmark, a gas trading platform in the Netherlands, went as high as €346.5 per megawatt hour (Mwh) on August 26, jumping over 23 times from Covid-affected October 2020. According to reports, India is now looking for alternatives and has reached out to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the US to secure liquified natural gas (LNG) at affordable prices. Although the price declined towards the later end of September, it was still 27 times more than what Indian importers paid for spot supplies of the fuel in late 2020. In India, spot LNG prices were around Rs 742 per million British thermal units at August end, 135% higher than a year ago and 285% higher than two years ago. According to analysts, strong demand for LNG will make it difficult for India to compete in the global natural gas market. Matthew Carr, head of CarrZee, a London-based clean energy intelligence provider, said that crazy high prices will slow the developing world's attempt to improve access to energy and electricity. Research analyst Sumit Pokharna tells more Sumit Pokharna, Research Analyst and Vice-President, Kotak Securities says 50% of India's gas requirements is met from imports. Situation may get grave in the coming winter. Double whammy is that rupee has also depreciated.  High gas prices have dent India's imports as Europe is sourcing most supplies by paying record prices ahead of the winter. In April-August period, India's LNG imports fell 10 per cent. Domestic natural gas production rose to 34 billion cubic meters in FY22, from 28.3 billion cubic metres in FY21. Gas consumption too fell by 10 per cent in August from a year earlier. In the first quarter of current fiscal, gas consumption fell 2.5 per cent. India's gas consumption is largely accounted by fertilisers, city gas distribution, power and other sectors. Meanwhile, in India, local gas prices, which are revised twice every year, are linked to global benchmarks. So, higher global benchmark prices mean that domestic prices would also rise. In line with that, the price of natural gas has been raised by 40% to a record high last Saturday. The record high local natural gas prices are likely to make CNG and PNG cost more. PNG prices have already risen 70 per cent in the last one year. According to a report in the leading financial daily, Indian automakers have cut their production target for CNG-powered vehicles by 25 to 30 per cent. City gas distribution companies are deliberati

Like any parent might, one Wisconsin mom wanted to make sure her adult daughter’s new boyfriend was a decent guy. So she went online and and searched for his name, Matthew Carr. What she found was nothing -- which, in retrospect, is incredibly shocking. A few years earlier, while serving in the Air Force, Carr had been court-martialed for posing as a doctor and luring women into “gynecological exams.” The Air Force convicted Carr of “indecent assault" of seven women and sentenced him to seven years in prison. But none of this came up in the Wisconsin mom’s search. Carr’s name didn’t pop up in criminal background checks or appear on any sex offender registry. So by the time the mom learned the truth -- from another family member’s deeper sleuthing -- her daughter had already submitted to several of Carr’s “exams.” This convicted military sex offender had blended back into civilian society, only to commit the same heinous crime against more women. This week on the DecodeDC podcast, host Andrea Seabrook talks with Scripps national investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt, who led a team of Scripps journalists that conducted a nine-month reporting project into military sex offenders who drop under the radar when returning to civilian life. “We took the names of all 1,300 military sex offenders that we believed were convicted,” Greenblatt tells Seabrook, “and we plugged them into the sex offender registry databases of all 50 states. We found that in an alarming number of cases, these names were not popping up on any available list that you or I or a mom in Wisconsin would ever have access to.” What the team uncovered is that Matthew Carr is one of at least 242 convicted military sex offenders whose names and offenses are not on any public U.S. sex offender registries today. Read the full investigation here and search the team's database of military sex offenders here. Want to keep up with all the latest DecodeDC stories and podcasts? From London to Rome, Paris to Stockholm, there is no other contemporary issue that can move the general public’s political needle quite so quickly as immigration. In the seas between Libya and Malta, Tunisia and Italy, hundreds risk the crossing to a presumably new and better life, and many of those hundreds lose their lives in doing so. Many more try to enter from Turkey to Greece and Bulgaria, from Belarus and Ukraine to Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Latvia, and from Morocco up across the treacherous waters of the Gates of Hercules to Spain. Others crowd into internal pinch points within the EU, such as the port of Calais, just a few watery miles from the white cliffs of Dover. Matthew Carr‘s excellent book – Fortress Europe: Dispatches from a Gated Continent (New Press/Hurst, 2012) – is an attempt to make sense of this gigantic issue. He is a journalist, so there are compelling human stories involving those making the hopeful and often fateful journeys. There is also a comprehensive study of how the Union, in dissolving so many of its own internal borders, has systematically built up its external frontiers. The author makes the case that this has led to countless individual tragedies, but – perhaps more importantly – that such an attempt to counter flows of people either looking for better lives, escaping tyranny, or both, is futile and ultimately counter-productive. Comprehensive solutions, whether technical or political, are unsurprisingly harder to identify. But that does not make this book any less compelling. Migration problems cannot be wished away, whatever the politicians say – the only real response is to understand the issue in all its humanity and all its complexity. That’s the value of this book.
