As thousands in the medical technology sector headed to Toronto, Canada for The MedTech 2024 Conference, MTPConnect was making sure that the 18 companies and organisations joining the Australian delegation were given opportunities to showcase their capabilities and make valuable US and international connections with a stopover in the medtech hub of Minnesota, before hitting Toronto.In this podcast special from North America, our MTPConnect CEO Stuart Dignam caught up with Kylle Jordan from Destination Medical Centre at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester Minnesota ahead of the Medtech conference to find out more about the 20-year initiative underway to expand the hospital precinct as a global medical care destination.Then it was on to the three-day MedTech Conference. MTPConnect signed an MoU with Medical Alley and Stuart talks with their new president and CEO Roberta Dressen about working together to foster global partnerships in health technology.Stuart was on the ground at the Australian Pavilion and caught up with some of Australia's medtech movers and shakers including iYarn's Founder and CEO Lockie Cooke, University of Melbourne's Principal Research Fellow, Optometry and Vision Sciences, A/Prof Lauren Ayton, Materia Health's Founder, Dr Emily Zhen as well as the delegation's major supporter, Global Victoria's Carolin McCaffrey.   The Team Australia delegation was supported by our major sponsor the Victorian Government, through Global Victoria and Invest Victoria, as well as support from NSW Health and AusBiotech.

The 2nd edition of the Transforming African MedTech Conference took place from 28 – 30 August 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. At the sidelines of the conference, I spoke with several delegates who shared their highlights. They include: Winnie Kibiru, MedTech Lead, Villgro Africa. She is one of the brains behind the conference and she talked about the event's vision and goals. Vivian Arinaitwe, CEO and co-founder, Che Innovations. Her innovation, the Neonest, was one of several amazing medtech devices on exhibition. Hellen Gitonga, Regulatory Affairs Specialist for Africa at Philips Health Systems. She spoke about her experiences as a judge during the pitch competition for startups. Sewu-Steve Tawia, Co-founder and Managing Partner, Jaza Rift Ventures. They are one of the conference's conveners and are a major investor in Africa's medtech sector. Eddine Sarroukh, Innovation Lead at Phillips Foundation. He moderated a powerful panel discussion on addressing barriers to medtech innovation in Africa. Prof Ndirangu Kioni, former Vice Chancellor, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology. He spoke about academia's catalytic role in medtech innovation. Kimani Chege, a freelance journalist who gave the media's perspective of the event. In this interview conducted at the Medtech Conference in Minneapolis, Lobo reveals that while he first was reluctant to take that Medtech job, he’s now grateful to have found a home. “If you’ve only been in Medtech, you do not understand how lucky you are to be in this industry.” Lobo shares insights on how he built a career that positioned him to lead one of Medtech’s giant. He also explains why under his watch Stryker grew to become a “serial acquirer” of that has spent $14 billion to acquire 55 companies during his tenure as CEO.

Paulsen most recently co-authored a letter asking the Trump administration to remove medical technology products from a list of Chinese imports subject to protective tariffs. The five-term Congressman also has fought against the Medical Device Tax. The Medtech Conference co-chairs and advisory board also are pleased to honor Dave Amerson, CEO of NeoTract, as the recipient of this year’s Dealmaker of the Year Award. The award recognizes Amerson's leadership of the urology start-up as it established its UroLift System as a critical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. Sales of UroLift were surging when Teleflex agreed to acquire the company, paying $725 million up front with the promise of another $375 million in milestone payments over the next two years. In an interview, Justin Klein, general partner of NEA, and Amerson will discuss: The steps Neotract took to adopt a winning culture?
