What happens when life's challenges become your greatest teachers? In this revealing episode of Life in Transition, host Art Blanchford welcomes Mike Huber, a mental performance coach with a powerful story of transformation. Mike candidly shares his journey through two pivotal life transitions: becoming a father and recovering from gambling addiction. "I've learned about myself that I am much more of an introvert than I am an extrovert... having that one-to-one relationship of like I'm here to listen, I want to understand you. I don't want to judge you, I want to help you." This philosophy now guides his work with young athletes after leaving a 20-year career to pursue his passion for sports psychology. Why did he make such a dramatic change? His recovery journey provided both the courage and clarity to pursue a more authentic path.Art and Mike dig into the pressures facing youth in competitive sports today and how Mike's approach emphasizes enjoyment over winning at all costs. But can career ambitions and parental responsibilities truly coexist? Mike offers practical insights on this delicate balance, sharing the two tools that transformed his life: therapy and mindfulness meditation. From panic attacks to purpose, Mike's story illustrates how vulnerability becomes service. Each time we share our struggles, he suggests, we cut their power in half. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder: our suffering finds meaning when it helps others navigate similar challenges. Isn't that what transition is ultimately about—transforming our pain into purpose?Michael Huber is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® whose mission is to help young athletes become confident problem solvers. Mike entered the sport psychology field inspired by his experiences as a parent, youth sports coach, and compulsive gambler in recovery. He has experienced many challenging transitions, including fatherhood, recovery, divorce, and entrepreneurship. Mike aims to be of service to others by sharing his story. About Allyson Hawkins Ward When my youngest daughter was just three, my entire world was turned upside down. I was walking a tightrope of life. A divorce, the loss of my beloved mother, my best friend, and juggling a challenging job at IBM. It was like being swept up in a storm, with waves crashing over me relentlessly. By the pricking of my thumbs, Deep Cut Upkeep this way comes! After splitting from his brother Ethan last year, Joel Coen went back to the book and then threw it out the window with his divisive, postmodern take on Shakespeare's Macbeth. Glorious set design, gorgeous cinematography, but methinks that none of the Deep Cut Trio are convinced: Wilson isn't moved by Denzel Washington's lead performance, Ben finds the heightened artifice pointless, and Eli finds Coen's examination of the themes in the text to be lacking. But hey: there's always Skip Lievsay, shining golden boy of the aural sense. I have bought golden opinions from all sorts of people in our Discord server. How is performance coach Gena Bradshaw walking the walk in training young athletes to be their best? For some athletes, developing their health and fitness are a necessary evil that comes with the task of playing competitive sports. However, for others, it is a core value that permeates every aspect of their lives. My guest on this episode, Gena Bradshaw, is a two-time cancer survivor, former college track and field athlete, and performance coach working with young athletes. Gena's personal experiences and family background underpin her passion for health and wellness. In Episode 28, Gena talks about how her competitiveness extended to the halls of Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital, how her growth mindset led her to develop into a college javelin thrower, and how she applies her experiences to help young athletes be their best.Gena spoke openly about her experiences as a two-time cancer survivor and how that has made her grateful for all of the opportunities in her life. She truly has a growth mindset and seeks to pass that mindset onto the athletes that she coaches. My suggestion to young athletes is to surround yourself with coaches like Gena, who value the whole person and will challenge you to be your best no matter what the circumstances.I want to thank Gena for her kind generosity and the wisdom she shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can follow Gena on Instagram @genabshaw, @bpfitcoaching, and @girlstoqueenspodcast, which she co-hosts with my guest on Episode 16, Erica Suter. You can learn more about The Freshman Foundation on our website at freshmanfoundation.com.Thank you for listening.
