Again, that’s businessmakers.network. We’ve talked about how Washington State has increased its gun laws and restrictions in previous episodes, so now it's time that we also talk about how to battle these unconstitutional fences around guns. So, how do we preserve the second amendment? Our journalist Justin Chartray wrote an article about this and reported that even though liberals may have the money, numbers, and votes, we can fight back their influence by helping the citizens of Washington State understand the true nature of a firearm. People need to know more about guns than just what popular media tells them. Jeremy Ball, a Washington State citizen who owns "Sharp Shooting Indoor Range and Gun Club", thinks that this is the best course of action to take because even though liberal influence has had a negative impact on guns, we also need to realize that many of us have not done our duty in teaching our kids how to handle guns properly. This blame also falls onto the gun industry itself. "We have not pushed back as an industry to get kids involved. We have failed to provide a positive outlook for them, and a positive outlet for teaching them safe firearm ownership and teaching them some of the things they get to do with guns." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/a-bright-future-in-sight) Not many people are raised properly around guns anymore, so when the left says that guns are evil, there’s no pushback because guns aren’t a part of our daily life or thought. This allows the left to control the narrative. This allows them to criminalize guns. So, the first step is that we need to get guns back into people’s hands, but we still need to do it in safe contexts. For example, one of the best ways to do this is through creating trap teams in schools that competitively shoot clay pigeons. We can fight back the broad and false narrative about guns by giving people, as Jeremy Ball says, a positive way to think about firearms. While it’s hard to make changes in liberal government and legislation, we need to realize that if we want long term effects, we need to focus on how parents and families understand firearms. We need to shape how the next generation will handle their responsibility of guns in a safe way that still honors everyone's second amendment rights. Jeremy Ball wants to preserve these rights, and he knows it will be hard. However, it’s not impossible: "It probably can be done. But it’s going to take parent(s) who are motivated to do it and to start pushing the issue. They expect gun store owners to lead the charge...but I can’t do it by myself. The approach needs to happen in the community, and if you make enough noise people will listen." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/a-bright-future-in-sight) Meanwhile, President Trump just issued a presidential memorandum yesterday about the security of the Southern Border. This memorandum will give the military more power to protect the Southern Border from external threats. As seen on the White House's website, President Trump, "assigned the Armed Forces of the United States the military missions of repelling the invasion and sealing the United States southern border from unlawful entry to maintain the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States." In the latest episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Victor Davis Hanson, a Hoover Institution fellow, discusses the changes in U.S. immigration policy under President Trump with Mark Krikorian, the Center for Immigration Studies' executive director. The discussion begins with acknowledging how the political landscape for Trump 2.0 differs greatly from the first Trump administration, giving President Trump maneuvering room to make major immigration policy changes.Key topics include:Border Enforcement & Deportation:A comparison of President Trump's 2021 and 2025 immigration policies. The wisdom of Trump's “worst first” deportation strategy.Over the last four years the composition of the illegal immigration population has changed to include a larger number of nationalities besides Mexicans. Will this weaken the cohesive lobbying effort to fight deportations?Birthright Citizenship & Legal Challenges:Trump's executive order addressing birthright citizenship.Predictions on the potential Supreme Court battle and legislative efforts.U.S.-Mexico Relations & Economic Impact:Mexico's shifting stance on immigration.Mexican public opinion turns against mass migration.Trump's potential tariff and remittance restrictions as leverage.Immigration & Fertility Rates:Declining U.S. birth rates and state-level trends. Can immigration raise the national fertility rate and achieve replacement level?Immigration's impact on native fertility. In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian, the podcast host, highlights a new Center report, The Declining Education Level of Newly Arrived Immigrants, which finds a decline in the education level of newly arrived (the past three years) immigrants. The decline, which added greatly to the low-income population, is in stark contrast to the steady improvement in the education level in the years prior to the border surge.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestVictor Davis Hanson is a Fellow at the Hoover Institution.RelatedVictorHanson.comTrump Issues Birthright Citizenship Executive OrderThe Declining Education Level of Newly Arrived ImmigrantsIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Chris reveals how illegal immigration fuels a system of cheap, exploitive labor on American farms. Drawing on his experiences in Florida—watching migrant workers on overloaded buses and hearing of farmers forced to pay as little as $100 a day—he exposes how this exploitation benefits agribusiness while undermining fair labor practices. www.watchdogonwallstreet.com
In this episode, we're talking about how America has real leadership again under Trump's administration, the importance of deporting illegal immigrants to restore law and order, and why we need to confirm RFK Jr. for the good of American health and wellbeing. We'll break down the policies that actually put America first, expose the chaos that's unfolded since, and discuss how we can push for real positive change for our country. We also need to focus on how we (desperately) need a separation of business and state.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/invest/gold-ira/

The intersection of immigration, border enforcement, new technology and specifically artificial intelligence, is racing toward more intense and more violent border enforcement strategies that are fueled by problematic algorithms, that mostly replicate the social and economic systems of power and exclusion that western societies are rooted in. On today's show, we'll explore part of how exclusionary and violent border policies have been aided by artificial intelligence, not just in the US but around the world, and how, because policies are slower to develop than technology, artificial intelligence industries move these practices forward without regulation and in global concert among the world's wealthier states. We're joined by Petra Molnar, a lawyer and anthropologist specializing on the impacts of migration technologies. She co-runs the Refugee Law Lab at York University and the Migration and Technology Monitor, which funds community grounded projects on border tech. She's also the author of the book that we'll be discussing today, called “The Walls Have Eyes: Surviving Migration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” Learn more about the book here: https://thenewpress.com/books/walls-have-eyes Check out Petra Molnar's organization the Migration and Technology Monitor: https://www.migrationtechmonitor.com/ — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post The Violent Use of Artificial Intelligence as Border Enforcement w/ Petra Molnar appeared first on KPFA.

We're excited to share the first conversation in our WITHpod 2024: The Stakes series. For the first time since 1892, we have an election in which both candidates have presidential records, which provides a unique opportunity to cut through messaging and rhetoric and culture war flotsam and actually take a hard look at what each man has actually done as president. On The Stakes, WITHPod will choose specific areas of policy -- immigration, taxes, climate -- and talk to an expert about the two candidates' records on the topic. We're starting with one of the highest salience and most complex policy areas: immigration. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, joins to unpack immigration policies under Trump vs. Biden, border enforcement, the state of the asylum system and more.

As the U.S. primary elections unfold, the issue of border security, particularly along the US-Mexico border, has taken center stage. Concerns about the number of people crossing the U.S. southern border illegally have prompted extreme and sometimes fatal measures by U.S. officials to curb the flow of migrants. How effective are these measures at slowing illegal immigration, and what is the cost for those trying to enter the U.S.? In this week's podcast, we sit down with Dr. Jason de León, professor of Anthropology and Chicano Studies at UCLA and the director of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, to discuss the effects of various immigration policies.Dr. de León sheds light on the methods that have been employed since at least the 1990s to deter border crossing, such as the Prevention through Deterrence policy, highlighting the conditions faced by those who cross the border and the potentially fatal outcomes. Challenging the perception of migration as a localized issue, Dr. de León argues that migration is a multifaceted phenomenon with global implications. He advocates for humane policies that address the root causes of migration, such as poverty and political turmoil, rather than relying on border enforcement policies that actively and often purposely cause harm and even death.Dr. de León is the Executive Director of the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), professor of Anthropology and Chicano Studies at UCLA, and the Director of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. Dr de León earned his bachelor's at UCLA, and his PhD at Penn State University. He was named a MacArthur Foundation fellow in 2017. His first book “The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail”, was published in 2015 by the University of California Press, and his second book, “Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling”, was published by Viking Press in March 2024.

A prominent figure in the push for the re-election of United States President, Joe Biden, expresses discord regarding the administrations stance on border security measures. The individual at the center of this differing opinion is none other than Democratic Texas Representative and leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Veronica Escobar, who simultaneously shoulders the role of co-chair for Biden's 2024 campaign. This week saw her voice raised in contrast to Biden's pro-border security deal sentiments. President Biden recently assured the nation of his intent to reinforce the southern border control regulations, provided that the ongoing negotiations regarding the border security agreement are given a green light by Congress. Veronica Escobar, on the other hand, communicated her belief that the administration and the Democrat party could have, and should have, taken initiative to develop immigration reforms in a more timely fashion. Escobar points out what she describes as a 'strategic error' in the lack of swifter response on key migration issues. Not only did she express her dissatisfaction towards the timing, but also voiced concerns over the substance of the present border bill, which has been on the table among Democrats and Republicans alike since the last month of the previous year. While transparency regarding the details of the Senate bill has not been fully established, Escobar has already outlined pressing concerns, forming her own non-negotiables. 'With the details of the Senate bill still under wraps, it is hard for me to make a conclusive opinion. However, certain elements will act as deal-breakers for me,' Escobar candidly admitted in a statement.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

They provide insights based on their extensive experience in law enforcement and border-related crimes. The conversation covers topics such as the record numbers of illegal crossings, the impact on communities and resources, the intentional policies of the Biden administration, and the role of the media in shaping perceptions. They also highlight the strain on law enforcement resources and the need for effective enforcement and vetting processes. The conversation delves into various aspects of border enforcement, the consequences of shutting down the border, the conditions at border detention facilities, the language used in immigration discourse, the credibility of asylum claims, the apprehension of individuals on the terror watch list, the humanitarian crisis at the border, the political motivations behind immigration policies, the dangers faced by those crossing the border, the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, and the anticipated increase in border crossings as we approach the November election. Takeaways The US-Mexico border is experiencing a crisis with record numbers of illegal crossings. The influx of people is overwhelming law enforcement resources and impacting communities along the border. The policies of the Biden administration have contributed to the current situation. The media plays a role in shaping perceptions and may not always provide an accurate representation of the border situation. Border enforcement can be reactive and the border can be shut down when necessary. Conditions at border detention facilities can be dire, with overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. The language used in immigration discourse can shape public perception and policy decisions. The credibility of asylum claims should be carefully evaluated to ensure the integrity of the system. The apprehension of individuals on the terror watch list highlights the potential security risks at the border. Unregulated immigration can have significant impacts on communities, including strain on resources and services. Want us to tackle a topic on a future OUT OF ROLE episode? Send us a DM! The former South Texas police officer talks about working a “surge” on the Texas-Mexico border, and playing a role in “border theater.”
Back in 2012, the then Prime Minister Theresa May, when setting out a remarkable new policy position on Border Enforcement, said, ‘ The aim is to create, here in Britain, a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants. This policy resulted in the deportation of British Citizens from the Windrush generation who came to this country to rebuild the NHS but could not provide paperwork to prove their legal status. This shameful policy and the legislation that underpins it has not been repealed, but rather its tentacles have within their grasp people who've come to this country to seek sanctuary. We speak to the people who are working to dismantle it. It's a challenging listen, Solidarity.
We speak with former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott, who is now a distinguished senior fellow for border security at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, about the declining morale of his former agency and the continuing border crisis.

During the Trump administration, US border agents were directed to separate detained migrants from their children. That produced an outcry. Under Biden, border agents have been photographed using horses to charge at migrants trying to cross the border. That too has an produced outcry. But if these measures are wrong, which measures a permissible? After all, few people think the border restrictions can never be justified no matter what the circumstances. How then should borders be enforced? Mollie Gerver from the University of Essex has tried to identify the relevant moral principles. And she's done something else as well, something philosophers rarely do: empirical research to find out whether the public agree with her. Mollie Gerver is a Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Essex. She is the author of the The Ethics and Practice of Refugee Repatriation. This episode of CMSOnAir features an interview with Josiah Heyman, Professor of Anthropology, Endowed Professor of Border Trade Issues, and Director of the University of Texas, El Paso’s Center for Interamerican and Border Studies. CMS’s communications coordinator Emma Winters asks Josiah Heyman about a CMS Essay he authored with Jeremy Slack and Daniel E. Martínez. The essay, titled “Why Border Patrol Agents and CBP Officers Should Not Serve as Asylum Officers,” examines findings from the Migrant Border Crossing Survey and concludes that US Border Patrol agents and other CBP officers should not serve as asylum officers because they “abuse migrants, physically and verbally, with significant frequency.” In the episode, Josiah Heyman also presents a positive vision of the US-Mexico border and lifts up Annunciation House as an example of the openness and generosity of border communities.
