Today, actor and author Nick Offerman returns to the show! We call him up to unpack his latest role as a fictional president in Alex Garland's Civil War (2:30), the function of the film's politics (9:30), and a powerful poem by Wendell Berry (26:15). Then, we turn to Offerman's personal journey, beginning with his recent book Where the Deer and the Antelope Play (32:48), which was inspired by growing up in rural Minooka, Illinois (33:30) and his experiences with the late Sam Shepard at Steppenwolf Theatre (35:55). Shortly after working with Shepard, Offerman began to find his footing—on and off the stage—as a performer, carpenter, and fight choreographer (39:48). He reflects on his galvanizing role in the film Going All the Way (42:37), the guiding principles of George Saunders (45:30), lessons from his sensei Shōzō Satō (52:10), the start of his nearly two-decade marriage with actress Megan Mullally (54:05), the phone call that changed his life (1:00:00), and the complicated legacy of Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation (1:06:36). Then, before we go, we return to the timely (and urgent) message of his latest book (1:11:30), a piece by Jeff Tweedy (1:14:10), and words by Wendell Berry (1:16:45). Nick Offerman has played many great characters, most famously Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation, and he starred more recently in an astonishing episode of The Last of Us. But he is driven by passionate callings older and deeper than his public vocation as an actor and comedian. He works with wood, and he works with other people who work with their hands making beautiful, useful things. And this, it turns out, is also a primary source of his tethering in values. It's a source of a spiritual thoughtfulness that runs through this conversation with Krista. So is his love and study of the farmer-poet Wendell Berry, whose audiobook The Need to Be Whole Nick just recorded. This is a moving and edifying conversation that is also, not surprisingly, a lot of fun.Nick Offerman grew up on a three-acre homestead "out in a cornfield" in Minooka, Illinois. His five books include Where the Deer and the Antelope Play and Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop. He founded Offerman Woodshop in Los Angeles in 2001, a collective that creates hand-crafted items from spoons to canoes to ukuleles. He's also written a book with his wife, Megan Mullally, called The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, and they have a podcast called In Bed with Nick and Megan. How to accomplish physical feats of endurance that many people have not with world leading ultra runner Adam Kiimble Adam Kimble is a professional ultra-trail runner, running coach, race director, motivational speaker, and amateur survivalist from Truckee, CA. He played Division-1 baseball at Bradley University prior to developing his passion for ultrarunning, and after graduation in the summer of 2009, he ran his first-ever 5k race near his hometown of Minooka, IL. The race resulted in terrible cramps and a lot of pain, but fortunately, it also came with a second-place age group finish! Once the pain subsided, Adam decided his racing days weren't done, and he trained to complete his first half marathon in 2011. After completing his first ultramarathon (50k) in 2014, the question became “what else is my body and mind capable of?” Following the Fastest Known Time (FKT) ever on the 171-mile Tahoe Rim Trail, a 60-day transcontinental crossing of the USA (2,500 miles), 60 days alone in the wilderness to become the winner of Discovery Channel's "The Wheel", seven podium finishes in 100-mile races, and a 31-day self-supported FKT across Great Britain (John o' Groats to Lands End + The Three Peaks), the limits are nowhere close to being reached.

On May 22nd, one day after I graduated high school, I left for the West Coast with my buddy Matt and we lived in my Subaru Outback for 45 days. I returned to my hometown of Minooka in July, worked at my local dog shelter for one month while raising funds for my next adventure and also fell in love with my friend Macie, who accompanied me on my next trip. We left August 10th and were on the road for another 2 months traveling through Northern CA and Oregon. This episode is a guide to living in your car and how to remain safe and sane while doing so. I apolgize if Macie and I tend to ramble when we reflect on our experience, as it was fucking awesome and it's difficult to not dwell on these memories, especially because we are currently living where its 20 degrees outside.

Hey guys Ken Courtright here with Today’s Growth Growing Business Today. I’m in my office in beautiful Minooka it’s Memorial Day and what a beautiful day. I want to take a moment to recognize our veterans and the people that risk their lives on a daily basis in our armed services. We just got done doing a 3 part series on the “ask is everything” and I want to piggyback that idea and transfer it to the interview or hiring process. After speaking to all of the business owners we’ve spoken to especially ones that realize explosive growth there isn’t a single one of them that doesn’t have an exceptional team behind them. I know we do. There is a certain protocol, a certain set of questions we ask of potential employees that really weed the would be hire from the people we do take on. I think all starts with Dr. Steven Covey’s notion that you should seek to understand before you are understood. Quite often in an interview we are so eager to make sure the prospective employee knows our company and our overall plan that we fail to understand the employee’s motivations behind interviewing. Listen on as Ken explains some killer interview questions that can save you a ton of headaches in the future. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share!
